Marion Cobretti Reviews “Ladder Match 2”

The Cobra Kai Review of Ladder Match 2: Crash & Burn Most great films get a sequel. A few years ago, the WWE released what is arguably their greatest DVD release to date; The Ladder Match. From the beginning of the first disc, to the end of the 3rd, the set was packed wall to wall, floor to ceiling with ****+ matches. Going through the entire spectrum with one on one for title, non-title, tag-teams, and TLC. So, it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel. The question is, will this be Aliens, or Alien Resurrection?

Ring Ka King #1

I was expecting a TNA-ish disaster and this is pretty good, actually.  Takes about 20 minutes to get past the dancing girls and introductions of the characters, but the rest is a good, 80s-style simple wrestling show complete with a Masterlock challenge and a huge hot crowd.  I would totally continue watching this, despite not being able to understand the commentary.

Rumble Reax

Hi Scott, hope you are well. The reactions to this year's Rumble match have been as wide-ranging and almost polarized as any that I can remember, both on the blog and elsewhere. Two questions. 1) Can you remember any past Rumbles with such a wide variety of strong reactions? 2) Do you think the shift to a more "comedy-based" Rumble is something that will continue, or is simply a one-year aberration? Like you, I loved this year's version, even though I tend to like my wrestling more serious and drama-based than comedic (one of the big reasons I don't watch a whole lot of it anymore). I don't think I would want to see it done like this every year, but as a slice of something different, by Rumble standards, I thought it was very well done and enjoyable. Thoughts? This was definitely a different Rumble for good or bad.  The reactions remind me of the HHH-Undertaker match or John Cena (“Let’s go Rumble / Rumble sucks!”).  I would like to once again remind everyon...

Fighting Dirty

Hey Scott. Just watched the UFC thing on Fox, and the same thought came to me again as I've had when I've watched MMA - why doesn't someone start fighting dirty? I mean within the rules, but being a complete dick in the ring and do the kind of thing that would definitely be frowned upon and booed. I'm thinking stamping on the opponent's foot in a clinch (which would be technically legal), or battering ram with the head or repeated leg sweeps. Basically acting like a full-on heel and doing anything to win. I realise that it would be hugely unpopular and would bring MMA closer to wrestling in a lot of viewer's eyes, but it seems to me that someone could be really exploiting some gaps. Thoughts? Guys train for YEARS to win at MMA using whatever little weaknesses and exploitations they can get, and if someone suddenly thought that any of that would be effective, you’d see it.  Guys have definitely stomped on feet in the clinch before, back in the early days, and i...

Sting Stuff

So I was watching Sting's segment in "Greatest Stars of the 90s" and seeing his "surfer" gimmick again made me wonder: how do you think his career would've gone if he started with Vince first in the 80s? Question, Was there ever a point pre-Monday Night Wars and possibly even pre-nWo that Vince McMahon (or someone else in the WWF) talked to Sting about possibly jumping ship? Otherwise, was there ever talk about Sting contacting WWF (even if it was solely for contract leverage) about jumping ship? One missed opportunity seems to be when the Ultimate Warrior won the WWF Title. They broke in together and had some history that could have been played up. And Vince could have had the added benefit of burying an NWA/JCP star in the process. As to the first question, I think he would have become a gigantic star and made shitloads of money, but not been anywhere near as good a worker.  Since there wasn’t a Ric Flair around at that point to really elevate him, it p...

The SmarK Rant for WWE Royal Rumble 2012

The SmarK Rant for WWE Royal Rumble 2012 So just like my Night of Champions rant, this is more of a short-form review because I was watching this in a theatre and I never want to be the doofus taking notes in the dark. Now, that being said, my opinion of this might vary wildly from people watching it home because the movie theatre experience is AWESOME. And it was a sold out theatre, which is a rarity for their PPVs these days. Not only that, but sold out with a JACKED crowd. A tad on the super-mark side (some loudly so) but man what a fun experience it made for. There’s really no comparison to watching it at home. So any of these ratings and opinions are subject to future “2020 Scott sez” re-examinations later where I make fun of myself, but for now it is what it is.

Scott Reviews HHH v. Undertaker

HHH v. Undertaker (Wrestlemania 27) Normally I’m not a single match review kind of guy, but I was listening to the year-end awards show on the Observer site, and Dave and Bryan were talking this up as even better than the Punk-Cena ***** classic from Chicago. So I figured it was worth the download at least to make my own call on it.

The SmarK Royal Rumble Countdown: 2010

(In the interest of speeding things up, I’ll just repost the 2010 show as-is because there’s not much to say anyway other than I overrated the Rumble match and probably the Mysterio-UT match as well, but it was a fun show regardless.  And no, I don’t have time to do the 2011 rant, sorry.  Maybe some other time.)  The SmarK Rant for WWE Royal Rumble 2010 - Live from Atlanta, GA. - Your hosts are Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and Matt Striker.

Hey Scott, 40 ballots and some tight races later, and the awards live once more! Sadly, no comments from Herb Kunze or Otto "Hack-Man" Heuer, but it's kinda like the days of old. Sort of. Anyway, hope your readers enjoy.  http://bit.ly/yspftS Why am I not shocked that it’s the CM Punk awards?  That’s kinda why I didn’t do something myself, since I could have saved everyone the trouble and just did “The CM Punk Award For Excellence In Being CM Punk” 10 or 12 times.  But hey, at least Tanahashi didn’t win Wrestler of the Year here.

Hi Scott, Just a quick note. I dare say you've been told this before but I 'm a big fan of your writing, and have been for quite some time. In fact it's inspired me to start my own blog ( www.theoldschoolslobberknocker.blogspot.com ), whilst still very much in its infancy, I'm already liking the idea of channeling my obsession into something creative. I don't think for one second my ramblings can be as influential or as read as yourself, but i can live the dream right? Anyway, that's it, just a note of thanks really. Cheers Jake P.S Any advice? Just write about what you enjoy watching and have fun doing it, not because you want to make a living off it or anything.

Bret v. Vince

Hi Scott Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year. Noticing the Bret Hart trend over the last few days, I was curious to know if your opinion on Hart-McMahon at WM26 has changed at all? As I remember you were the only commentator whose opinion I take seriously to give it an even remotely positive view. Do you still think it was the right way to book it? Would you have done the same? I was remotely positive about it?  Because that wasn’t really my intention.  I think it was more being diplomatic about it.  I wouldn’t even have booked the match, I’d have done Hart Dynasty v. Vince’s Corporate Team.  Like, Drew McIntyre and someone else.  Then you have Bret and Vince in the corners with the “Bret gets five minutes with Vince if the Harts win” stip, and that immediately confines it to a short match where Bret does his spots and gets out again.

Donahue On The Sex Scandals

Oh man, classic stuff from 1992.  I totally remember watching this show and how clueless the audience and Donahue were about how things worked, and I wasn’t even online at that point.  And the hilarious thing is that Vince, the guy who was worst of all, just kind of uses his charisma to wrap everyone around his finger here.  Tremendous stuff for all the wrong reasons.

CM Punk’s Sing-A-Long Blog

Hi Scott!  I'm a fan & avid reader of your blog.  I'm not sure if you've seen this, but it's a montage of clips of CM Punk from the WWE's MITB storyline, with music from "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog".  Whoever edited this, did an AMAZING job with this! http://youtu.be/5Rz38IwXKG0 This is insanely awesome!  That said, I've never seen "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog".  I'm gonna fix that now.  :-) Thanks so much & have an awesome new year! Never seen Dr. Horrible either, but it’s on Netflix Canada and I do love NPH, so perhaps I shall check it out.  By the way, apparently the US Netflix streams all of sorts of WWE DVD releases, but up here we get UFC PPVs with George St. Pierre.  So good for us.

Don't hate us because we cover the Bruins, but we thought you might like the treasure trove of old photos uncovered from classic 80's WWF cards at the old Boston Garden http://www.iwantbostonwrestling.com/2012/01/boston-flashback-rear-admirals-garden.html Hey, how about that Tim Thomas?  I guess being a great goalie can excuse a lot of batshit insanity. Cool photos, by the way.

Rumble Games

Scott, Can I suggest a thread for variations of Royal Rumble pools? Here's one our group has used the past couple years: (Based on five people) Draw Nos. 1 through 20, four each Draw Nos. 21 through 30, two each - guaranteeing everyone two of the final 10 evens it out and keeps everyone happy. First wrestler thrown out - 1 point Second wrestler out - 2 points 29th wrestler out - 29th points, etc. Player whose six wrestlers' points add up to the most wins. This version of the game is less labor-intensive than keeping track of who throws out who. You just have to root for your guy to stay in the match. Do people still do that kind of thing?  Also, the challenge this year is that we are a week out of the show and still have zero idea who’s even entered into the thing.  We know Sheamus, Barrett, R-Truth and Miz and maybe Foley, but that’s it.  Once again I will stress that whoever draws Orton is the guy who will be happiest.

Stone Cold DVD Review

The Cobra Kai Reviews: Stone Cold Steve Austin - The Bottom Line On The Most Popular Superstar of All Time – By Marion Cobretti I started watching wrestling in 1995, I didn't miss one single Raw until the Raw where The Radicalz debuted. I know this because I remember being pissed that I missed a Raw where something major happened. Anyways, so I was there from Stone Cold's genesis [I remember Ted Dibiase watching a TV, and saying he'd found the ultimate protege] up until he retired. Now, I was along for the full ride, and saw how he was on everything, and how people at school who use to make fun of me for watching wrestling were now running up to me on Tuesday mornings to ask if I'd seen whomever Stone Cold stunnered the night before. Basically, what I'm trying to say is even though I saw all that, I still can't say he's the most popular superstar of all time. Hulk Hogan was officially noted as the most recognizable face on the planet in 1987. That's a b...

RSPW Awards Plug

Hey Scott, This is the final voting weekend for the RSPW Awards Resurrection, and with 22 ballots currently in, we're a real threat to break 2009 levels of participation! That said, I'm hoping for a late push with these, as the voting's been rather interesting in some cases. If you could do me a solid and promote this to the readership, this would make for a more applicable snapshot for 2011. Voting ends Sunday night/Monday morning at midnight EST, unless I choose to extend it. Results should be made available by Thursday at the latest, if there's no extension. http://justinsport.webs.com/2011awards Thanks! Get out there and do your civic duty, people!

The SmarK Royal Rumble Countdown: 2003

- Thanks to all those who bought "Tonight...In This Very Ring" over the weekend, temporarily pushing it as high as #2000 on the Amazon rankings for most of the weekend. They should be shipping from Amazon soon and in bookstores by the end of the month, so hang tight!  (2012 Scott sez:  Unfortunately none of my other books came close to those sales numbers, which is why “Tonight…” is the only one to date that I actually made royalties from over and above the initial advance.  Or maybe my agent was just screwing me out of hundreds of hard-earned dollars all this time.  Either way.)  - Live from Boston (2012 Scott sez:  BOOOOOOOOOO!) , which rhymes with Austin. Is this a sign of his impending return? STAY TUNED!  (2012 Scott sez:  Kind of was, yeah.)  - Your hosts are JR & King & Cole & Tazz.

UFC Questions

First off, thanks for getting me into UFC. I never cared for it for the longest time, just saw it as a three round hugging match. I used to love wrestling, still do I guess I just can't watch the current product. I actually haven't been a regular viewer since 2002 but after I read your Benoit book, it got me back into wrestling full force. This probably wasn't your intention seeing as the book had such a negative vibe towards the business. So then I went to Amazon and purchased your other four books, and have read them all twice. Something about the breezy shooting the shit way you write really reminds me of me and my cousin watching wrestling and heckling/commentating on it. But, as I stated before I just can't watch the current product, so my DVD wrestling collection has become huge as the only way I get my fix is by watching the classic matches. Reading the retro rants are also a lot of fun, which brings me to my UFC...

YouTube Plug

Hey Scott, dirtyearsbill from the blog here. I was wondering if you'd be so kind as to plug a youtube channel run by two of my buddies. They're putting out short videos every Wednesday and they're a lot of fun. I think some of your readers might dig what they're putting out. We're encouraging everyone to subscribe and help these guys get their name out there. As always, thanks for the years of entertainment on the blog. Here are two of their videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8Ui6598MOM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnTMdI6Fqxo&feature=youtube_gdata_player Hope it goes viral!  I finally watched that “Shit Girls Say” video that everyone’s sick of now, because I’m slow that way.  I think we need a “Shit Wrestling Fans Say” video to go along with it.
