Hey Scott, I've a couple of just dumbass goofball questions. I was watching the Midnight Express vs RnR Express match on the "Rise and Fall of WCW" DVD and thought two things:#1. If nothing else wrestling has contributed some of the most epic mullets ever witnessed, with Bobby Eaton and Ricky Morton being near the top. Who else rocked the most awesome mullet?#2. I know it would never happen but with their vast archived footage they own how sweet would it be if WWF/E put out a DVD be consisting of nothing but MX vs RnR matches and Cornette promos?
1. Eddie Guerrero in WCW, of course. Business in the front, party in the back, baby.
2. They'd have my money. But this hearkens back to what I said before about their collection -- they need to do on-demand DVD sets. They present you with a list of the archives, you go through and pick out 3-4 hours worth of matches you want, they burn you a DVD. $20 a pop, it's all profit, I probably buy 20 of them for myself. You can make your own Great Khali comps if you want, or Best of NXT, or whatever oddball shit you're into as a fan and it costs them NOTHING.
But they hate money, Scott.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most hilarious things you can show to a female who's not a wrestling fan is an old Rock n' Roll Express match. They'll usually be just BAFFLED about why all the girls in the audience are squealing so loud for mullet-haired Ricky Morton!
ReplyDeleteSee, I wonder they would sit there and monitor the downloads, and then freak out when people pick old-school NWA or the Rock-n-Wrestling era stuff over modern fare featuring the likes of HHH and Cena. After all, those men are the REAL STARS and how dare those ungrateful geeks on the internet not appreciate their greatness? Or something.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm just being silly. But this is WWE and Vince McMahon we're talking about here.
They don't hate money. They hate being told what to do.
ReplyDeleteSo true. I met Ricky Morton at the Legends of Wrestling event in 2010 and was telling my g/f about how people would go nuts over the R&R's back in the 80's. She finally saw them when I was watching an old NWA tape and goes, "the pudgy little guy with the mullet and his googly eyed partner? Those guys?"
ReplyDeleteI was always partial to HBK's 1992 stud-mullet. http://www.sugarslam.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Shawn_display_image.jpg
ReplyDeleteIf I ever rocked a mullet....this is the look I'd go for.
A disc full of Cornette promos? No thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe matches? Yes please.
Great call...one of the all-time great forgotten mullets. I say it's a forgotten mullet because his hair was SO "party in the back", you'd forget it was "business in the front"...
ReplyDeleteEh, there's really no way to tell if a R&R vs. ME dvd will make them money. Sure some people would buy it but not enough is my guess.
ReplyDeleteI could totally see them doing something similiar on their channel if it ever comes out.
Mike Awesome rocked a great mullet. Of course when he got to WCW they completely ignored the heat he was getting for his haircut and instead decided to make him have a fat chick fetish and a 70s sterotype.
ReplyDeleteSay what you will about how WWE currently handles guys getting over, you can guarantee they would have at least attempted to make money off mullet t-shirts and merchandise.
Early 90's Scott Steiner mullett!
ReplyDeleteThe idea of the on-demand DVD sets could mean that The Definitive Braden Walker Collection could actually become reality!!!
ReplyDeleteEddie's mullet wasn't really business in the front. It was all sharp bangs and stuff. Real bad-ass and looked really cool when he was doing his high-flying. He was probably the only guy I thought could make the mullet work.
ReplyDeleteAnd when he cut it, a part of my me died. 8 (
That is a 24-carat fried gold idea, Scott.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for the mullets, Eddie in 2002 (shaved sides, with added highlights) was outstanding.
And then all of HIM died! (Too soon?)
ReplyDeleteI'm all in with Hulk Hogan for best mullet.
ReplyDelete...by the fans.
ReplyDeleteThere, I finished your last sentence.
THREAD JACK~! Sort of a Smackdown spoiler but not really; Antonio Cesaro aka Claudio Castagnoli debuted in a backstage segment with Johnny Ace to discuss signing a WWE contract. This is fantastic news.
ReplyDeleteFurther THREAD JACK: Cena's trying to do one of those edgy "appeal to the smarks" stunts by having a supposed meltdown on Twitter:
ReplyDelete"Seems like the voices are being heard guys and the cena sucks chants have taken effect. They want to phase me out. #cantstopme"
"I
bussed my ass for this company and now you want to throw me out? hell,
guess I'll make an iMPACT else where. #controversialtweet"
#hustle
#loyalty #respect you can't bring me down I'll do this else where if
you need a new face for the business. don't miss me now"
"I might
not even stick around until WM29 and quite frankly I don't care. I'm
going to do something that leaves everyone talking soon"
"They use you and when you don't matter anymore you're dust to them. i should have known. but don't worry. #bombshellonitsway"
"gotta start getting used to thursdays and I aint talking Jersey Shore #nevergiveup"
Or, and this is a big or, Vince decided to start swinging from Brock's nuts again.
If they ever put him in a segment with Otunga where Cesaro says "That coffee smells good, can I have a sip?" as a little wink to the ROH fans I'd be one happy asshole.

ReplyDeleteCan't beat Brian Pillman's early days with the curly mullet.
I feel bad for booing him now. 8 (
ReplyDeleteYES. (And I don't mean that in the Daniel Bryan way.)
ReplyDeleteYou do?
ReplyDeleteCena should sign up to "How to Tweet by Scott Steiner" 101 because his attempt at being "edgy" and "controversial" is lame and is so obvious a work.
In his defense, the majority of his fan base (kids under 13), are probably shitting their pants.
Sinestro would be proud.
ReplyDeleteScott Hall. AWA.
ReplyDeleteC'mon, he had a mullet AND a Selleck mustache.
I'd be fine with it.
ReplyDeleteTommy Rich had a masterful mullet as well.
ReplyDeleteBTW, when was this posted? None of it is at his twitter page. Deleted already?
ReplyDeleteSteiner should get his own 10-minute segment on Impact or ROH every week. Dude is money.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I can't find anything about it.
ReplyDeleteDiesel had a sweet mullet too. We may need a mullet bracket to vote on. Heres my list so far:
ReplyDeleteBobby Eaton
Ricky Morton
Scott Steiner (early)
Mike Awesome
HBK
Diesel
Eddie Guerrero
Michael Hayes
Honorable Mention: Todd Pettingill
And Dutch Mantell.
ReplyDeleteThat would have been 1994. But yeah, he had a major league mullet going on. It almost made you sad to see him work so hard during his matches, because all the sweat would kill the mullet.
ReplyDeleteDidn't he know he had a Southern legacy to live up to?
How fitting that we discuss legendary mullets on the same day that the owner of the NBA's most legendary mullet passes. RIP Dwayne Schintzius
ReplyDeletehttp://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/dwayne-schintzius-owner-most-carefully-crafted-mullet-nba-204042929.html
Seriously, look at that picture. That guy was 7'2. I'm a little shocked no one brought him in as a gigantic foreign menace type after retirement.
Jerry 'Lightning Foot' Flynn. Hello!!!
ReplyDeleteIf Wikipedia is to be believed, the mullet has even been banned in Iran!
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mullet_(haircut)
You know you've made a cultural impact when an entire country bans you.
Bravo sir.
ReplyDelete1-2-3 Kid's trailer park mullet takes number 1 for me.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't on demand sets be a logistical nightmare for them to pull off?
ReplyDeleteUnless you set up some program that allowed you to enter in your choices so that the total time could be calculated, and then the program would feed into some mass production line where DVD's are pulled into a machine that has access to all of the content and burns everything that way.
But yeah, it would have to take some heavy duty automation to pull it off since each DVD would be different, someone's choices may not fit on a single DVD, etc.
Well, I think that is one of the ideas of the concept -- you can minimize the cost, because you don't have to mass produce the discs or make glass masters, you're using DVD-Rs. All you really need to have is a system where people can request the matches they want, while a program on their end makes sure it fits within the length of a disc. The discs are only used and burned as they are requested.
ReplyDeleteWarner Brothers got into this a couple of years ago on their archives site for movies that have small audiences or cult followings -- lost of older stuff and TV movies. I've heard they are doing quite well with it and keeps rolling out new titles.
That's a definite spoiler in my book. Such an awesome one that I wish I'd been able to be surpised. The little things rule.
ReplyDeleteWow, I do believe all must bow down to that mullet.
ReplyDeleteI'd wonder that too -- but I have a feeling Vince is pretty well disconnected from the part of the company that handles this sort of stuff. The inconsistencies in the editing, blurring, music dubbing, and even watermarking of footage seems like the kind of stuff Vince would be pissed about if he was paying any attention.
ReplyDeleteYeah it would be an interesting challenge. As far as calculating the time and such, that's all pretty easy stuff to do with a database that I'm sure already exists on their end. It would be easy to manage on the website that way, to prevent anyone from ordering a disc that would be too full.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the other stuff, I know they do make some computer controlled DVD burners where you stack a bunch of blank discs on a giant spindle, which can be burned to specifications and content fed into it from a computer system. Not sure how much that would run them and I'm sure it would have to have at least one physical user sitting there to monitor it, but you'd think they'd make their money back.
He just shows up backstage, he doesn't wrestle. But I won't post anything like that ever again just to be safe.
ReplyDeleteNah, that's just me, is what I meant. I'm admittedly way more anal than most. I was also agreeing that it was "hey, cool!"
ReplyDeleteI'm still hoping Claudio plays the gimmick like an 80s foreign heel. Or hell, even like Ludvig Borga who had a great character but just wasn't good in the ring which is a problem Claudio definitely does NOT have.
ReplyDeleteThat's more of a 'skullet' ^_^
ReplyDeleteha ha, yeah. My mullet nominee was much funnier in my head while I was typing it, lol.
ReplyDeleteWhere did the name "mullet" come from, anyway?
ReplyDeleteDid you see Austin Aries absolutely destroy roh in an interview today?
ReplyDeleteCornette was a master.
ReplyDeleteReally? Wow. I'm about to seach for it but what's his problem? He had no problem going back to them in 2007.
ReplyDeleteI read the excerpt. He's right that it feels closer to Smoky Mountain nowadays than it does to classic ROH, but I don't really see that as a problem. It's not as good as it was, but not much ever has been. Still, I can see why he left.
ReplyDeleteThey have stations at FYEs and such where you can burn CDs from a database of songs you pick there, it's all automated. Apparently for people who don't own computers. So I'd imagine they could do it. I also remember Pearl Jam doing something similar where you could pick and choose from different live tracks from a tour they did and put a CD together, and you had to order by mail, and this was in like 2000 or 2001. So it's not unprecedented.
ReplyDeleteWhat's his problem? Aries is a tool. Seriously, the guy tries so hard to be Punk/Bryan and he's just second rate in every single way.
ReplyDeleteIt will never stop freaking me out that he and Razor Ramon are the same guy.
ReplyDeleteThat's over 15 minutes of brain bashing action!
ReplyDeleteThat may be Captain Planet at his day job.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of on demand dvd-r's is brilliant. I'd buy so many. Even if you could buy drm free files of individual matches that you could burn yourself, that would be something. That said, I do love that wweclassics.com is free now. That's an awesome service.
ReplyDeleteHow the fuck did we get to this point without someone mentioning CRUSH?
ReplyDeleteVince obviously doesn't monitor the day-to-day operations of the home video department. I mean, do you remember when they announced a Sting dvd? (which then of course was cancelled a few weeks later) I just cannot imagine Vince giving the green light to that in the first place.
ReplyDeleteExcellent choice.
ReplyDeleteHe bussed his ass? Remind me not to eat at any restaurant that employs John Cena.
ReplyDelete
