Hi Scott,
I disagree about your assessment of last night's Brock/Cena match. I think it was the right move to put Cena over Brock the way they did. After all, the idea is to build towards a rematch, and now both men have something to prove when they inevitably lock up again. If Brock had beaten Cena up the way he did and won, then why would anyone want to see the rematch? The alternative would have been an evenly fought match, which does nothing for either man. If Cena had won that way, then it's more of the same stuff everyone hates. If Brock had won that way, then you kill his mystique in one fell swoop. You want to build Brock up to be an unstoppable juggernaut, and they did that last night. He just made one mistake (which you can easily chalk up to ring rust or whatever). Or, they could build on on why I think so many UFC fans hated or resented Brock: He was able to get by on his natural ability without having to get better or diversify his skills. In storyline terms, he could say that he approached last night's match the same way. He didn't wrestle a match for 5 years and he came back and beat the face of the WWE to within an inch of his life. He came up short, but now he knows he has to get serious if he wants to cut a swath of destruction through the WWE (his Summer of Brock, so to speak). He can run roughshod over the fed while Cena's out. Then when Cena comes back, there's your rematch.
Finally, I know you're a fan of Cena's when it comes to his work. I'm shocked that so many people think Cena's a mediocre worker. All I have to say is that last year's Money in the Bank and last night's show were the two best shows of the last 12 months. The best match on either card had one thing in common: Cena working his ass off in the main event. He got a great match out of a guy who hasn't worked a WWE match since Wrestlemania XX. Let's hear it for him!
Hey, as I’ve noted many times in the past, I think Cena’s a tremendous worker and absolutely should be the top guy because he gets the biggest reactions and can work awesome matches. I just think he needs a change as a character.
As for the first point, your explanation of Brock’s journey is a babyface journey. Someone who makes a mistake and loses, then betters themselves before coming back to go on a path of destruction would make him Steve Austin in 97 or The Rock in 99. If you have a guy coming out and going “OK, I fucked up, but now I’m going to kill this guy to make up for it,” people will cheer him, not boo him. Which is fine if you want to go that route, but it seems pointless when all the money matches are on the other side of the fence. Plus, as others have noted, watch Rocky III and IV if you want to understand where the motivation for the rematch would have come from if Brock had won. It was RIGHT THERE for WWE to rip off, and given that Hogan became a huge star in the first place because of Rocky III, it’s inexcusable that they’d forget about how to do that sort of booking.
I don't see any reason the same motivation can't work for a heel.
ReplyDeleteThe arch-type for a heel like Lesnar is built around the aura of invincibility. Think Darth Vader. That kind of character needs to be dominant for the first 2 acts of a 3 act story and in the 3rd act, the hero overcomes the odds through changing their style (or a montage in the 80s :-) ) to avenge his prior defeat.
ReplyDeleteThis is storytelling 101, it's not complicated and it was RIGHT THERE for the taking.
Not only that, Cena is leaving, it only makes it easier to write this story proper...smh.
I think everyone is missing the motivation of the WWE. They brought in Brock Lesner to rebuild Cena after his loss to The Rock. To the WWE Cena had to go over. You can't have a guy like Cena lose twice to guys that are part timers who do not impact your bottom line with the exception of two or three ppvs a year. Brock losing his first match is a problem, but if Cena is leaving for a long period of time it makes more since.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if anyone has said this yet (I know hundreds of people have visited the site today and posted). Last night was, once again, Vince's ego running wild. I think Vince sees himself a visionary, and hell, he's the king of his industry so it's understood. However, Vince and his "writers", in my opinion, spend most of their time looking at sites like this one and strive to do the opposite of any type of predictable booking. How many times has Vince gone against common sense and f'd up an angle that would have been HUGE money i.e. The Invasion, Goldberg, a Cena heel turn etc. Vince is addicted to the swerve and lately, it has not served him well. As far as I can see he's no better than Russo at this point. Last night served two purposes, swerve the wrestling smarks and keep Cena in his "Superman, babyface" role. There is no where to go now that will keep Brock from becoming just "another guy". He's further kept anyone but Cena from being the top guy. This is the kind of thing that causes guys like myself, a fan since the 80's, to find something else to do on Monday nights. There is no more excitement. There is no more WCW or ECW as competition. TNA is non-existent as opposition. So now the only competition for Vince is the fans. It's been like that now for 11 years now. Out-smarting the smarks is now Vince's past time...and last night was the result. Either Vince is badly in need of someone who can challenge his company or he is completely out of touch with his fan base. Either way, he blew it last night. Plain and simple.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't have to be. There's no one definite way to tell any story. Now whether they're talented enough to tell that story is another thing.
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo, if Cena and Lesnar both turn later in the year, I could easily imagine this being a set-up for that. Of course that would imply that Cena would turn heel and they would plan long-term.
Then again, Vince never heard of Scarface (Razor Ramon) nor Pirates of the Caribbean (killing off Pirate Paul's gimmick), so I'm sure he's never spent a minute on a Rocky movie, even if it did help put Hogan on the map.
ReplyDeleteI see what you're saying, but I don't know, maybe I've fallen into the Lesnar mystique too much, to me, it looks like Cena just got lucky. The got just completely got his ass kicked, and pulled one out at the end. Now someone might say, isn't that the story of 99% of his matches? Yeah that's true, but in those other 99% you didn't see the beating that he took last night. So, while I say as a caveat, I wouldn't have had Cena win because like most people have mentioned, there's way more money in the chase for him, I don't think this irrevocably injures Lesnar's mystique. He was cocky and dominant, and lost on a fluke...it happens to heels...all the time, but what NEEDS to happen tonight is to have Lesnar beat Cena into an ambulance and have Cena stay out for awhile. You rehab Brock, get Cena his time off, and move on from there.
ReplyDeleteMeltzer said this exact thing today, kinda like not having Kong come out last night and destroy the Bellas and wrapping up that loose end.
