Cena, Edge and Lita seem like slightly high, although you can understand why. The 3D is too low.
ReplyDeleteBut it's a fun list.
Get rid of Shake Rattle n' Roll and sub in the Codebreaker (yes, Jericho gets two) and you've got something there.
ReplyDeletePS. Does NXT have it's own separate website, like NXT.com or something? I thought I heard something about it not being on WWE.com anymore.
Rikishi didn't use the Stink Face as his finisher, did he? The Rikishi Driver was a great move.
ReplyDeleteIf it does I haven't been able to find it, although that's not with a long look or anything. There's still a section for it on WWE.com but you have to search for it.
ReplyDeleteThere should have been room for Blackjack Mulligan's claw, which I remember growing up because they'd put a big red X over the screen to make you believe he was squeezing the victim's skull so hard he'd start to bleed.
ReplyDeleteAlso, no love for Tony Atlas' press slam? for the British Bulldogs' combo of a gorilla press/diving headbutt?
No Yes Lock makes me a sad panda.
ReplyDeleteNXT is only going to be shown overseas at this point.
ReplyDeleteKind of a silly list. The Cobra Clutch twice? Pedigree #3 (it is a WWE list, I suppose)? 3-D waaaay below Hogan's Leg Drop? Shake Rattle and Roll shouldn't be on the list at all-it was always a joke finisher...I don't remember seeing Honky use it outside of squash matches against jobbers.
ReplyDeleteSo many others deserving of this list: the Hart Attack, Demolition's finisher, Koko B Ware's Ghostbuster, Brain Buster's spike piledriver, Orndorff's piledriver, Davey Boy's running powerbomb.
You would think they could have let us know that on the show.
ReplyDeleteAccording to The Score's commercials, we will get to see it tomorrow in Canada. I look forward to seeing it!
ReplyDeleteThis is an oddly-specific list to have compiled.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that Arm BAR and ARM Bar both failed to make this list!
ReplyDeleteAnd the Jackhammer was one of the worst finishers ever...so anticlimactic coming after his mammoth Spear (that put Edge's to shame...)
ReplyDeleteIf you put that in, then you really need to have the Crippler Crossface as well...
ReplyDeleteIs that Bret Hart vs. Bob Backlund match the one where Backlund snapped after losing? First time for that one being released isn't it?
ReplyDeleteWait a minute, wait a minute...a bearhug made the list? I guess it's The Bearhug...but really?
ReplyDeleteThe DVD releases are getting really weird and niche-based. I'm working on the Best of Falls Count Anywhere one right now, a three-disc collection of a mish-mash of hardcore matches, street fights and falls count anywhere matches. It's a bizarre dogs' breakfast of stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnd coming soon, from WWE Home Video:
ReplyDeleteHistory of the WWE RAW General Manager
WWE's Greatest PG Promos
WWE's Greatest Rivalries: John Cena vs Big Show (3 disc set)
The Best of Las Vegas Roulette
Hornswaggle: The Man. The Myth. The Legend.
I've always thought that Bill Kazmaier's Upside Down Bearhug was pretty badass.
ReplyDeleteBah, the Diamond Cutter so far below the RKO...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I don't think the new NXT was ever going to be something we could watch. Jim Ross certainly didn't seem to think so, he's been saying since they had the first taping awhile ago that while he didn't know, he didn't expect it to be available in the States. Why they won't just put it online for us, I don't know. I actually was interested in it with some of the FCW guys and Ross/Regal doing commentary for at least some of it.
Crippler Crosswhat?
ReplyDeleteAnd he's beat such luminaries as Kofi Kingston and um...Kofi Kingston.
As many people as any other heel with a submission. He's made midcard faces tap quite a few times, but he's generally not going to make any top faces tap, they pretty much never tap out because WWE's afraid they'll look too weak if they do. They wouldn't need to even bring up the Crossface anyway. Just bring up LeBell and how he changed it to the Yes Lock.
ReplyDeleteI doubt they care, sadly. I know JR said a month ago he doubted it would be available in the US, at least.
ReplyDeleteIn Kayfabe the Pedigree is one of the hardest moves to kick out of. I think that's what this list is really about.
ReplyDeleteI know its retarded to argue about these lists but how is sweet chin music not number 1?
ReplyDeleteAlso, how is the Shooting Star Press not a top 50 finisher? Even if they're pissed at Bourne at this point, put Kidman's on the list instead of as a "bonus". Kidman and Bourne largely got over because of their finishers (no disrespect to either guy who I enjoy, but the finisher is what made them stand out) and it's not even in the top 50?
ReplyDeleteExtras aside, how does this list compare to, say, random YouTube videos?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXXYnzw7RDc
Good lord, don't give them ideas.
ReplyDeleteIt's says a lot that the Roulette one would be the best by a mile. Hell, better than some of the real ones they've done lately;)
Pretty random and thrown-together list. The only match on here I'm interested in owning is Hart-Backlund, and that on it's own won't be enough for me to buy this. Just do a Bret Hart Unreleased Collectors Series already!
ReplyDeleteYes on both counts. About the only thing on this set that I would want.
ReplyDeleteWow. They left Sid's powerbomb out?
ReplyDelete(He'll be pissed. Squeegees at ten paces, anyone?)
Bulldog's running powerslam is another surprising omission.
And Gangrel's jumping DDT was always pretty badass to watch.
Or even freaking mark Mero. It is absolutely a top 50.
ReplyDeleteThe "Impaler," right? Man, I loved that move.
ReplyDeleteRumor has it that WWE might be working on an exclusive deal to show it on hulu.
ReplyDeleteI actually agree with everything in front of it except the DDT. Plus, the Hogan Legdrop should be higher (maybe #2).
ReplyDeleteInteresting that they were willing to put so much ahead of the FU. And...why are there two Frog Splashes? Why not just make them one entry and mention multiple people?
ReplyDeleteI'm annoyed that there's so much overlap with the next set--WWE: Top 50 Moves Where the Opponent Stays on the Mat for an Inexplicable Length of Time While the Superstar does Some Kind of Ridiculous Dance and then Lands an Ineffectual Falling Strike which Somehow Results in A Pinfall (Which Might Have Made Sense if the Guy had Just Gone for a Pin in the First Place, but Now His Opponent's had Ample Time to Rest and Should be Able to Kick Out from what would Otherwise Just be a Transition Move Without All the Pageantry). On sale soon, exclusively at Walmart!!!
ReplyDeleteThis looks kinda crappy, I don't think I'm even gonna bother to bootleg this. Though I'll probably borrow it if anyone I know gets it.
ReplyDeleteSharpshooter seems at least 5 or so spots too low. Kayfabe or otherwise. When Bret locked that shit on, it was over. Unlike today when everyone gets to the ropes, and no one ever taps to a submission finisher. If crowds still pop for submissions anymore--despite having no reason to--I feel like it's residual conditioning from the sharpshooter.
ReplyDelete"a bizarre dogs' breakfast of stuff?" I'm going to make it my goal to work that into conversation for the rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteI'll hand over my debit card to WWE Home Video right now... as long as the Spin the Wheel Coal Miner's Glove match is a bonus feature on the Las Vegas Roulette 4 disc set.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have such fond memories of Sting's Scorpion Lock in WWE. I'm glad to see it well represented in WWE's 50 Greatest Finishers. Yes sir, the Stinger was always one of my favorite WWE Superstars.
ReplyDeleteI'll take "Amazing Shit I Never Heard Before But Will Now Pretend To Have Made Up" for 200 please...
ReplyDeleteI imagine Mero's probably higher on their shit list than Evan Bourne.
ReplyDeletethats a fun and fairly uncontroversial list. You can shuffle moves up or down a few spots but there isnt anything really out of place. For mine you really cant argue with Stunner-Tombstone-Pedigree as far as kayfabe goes
ReplyDeleteHe beat Miz with it a couple times. Which isn't that much more impressive at the moment, is it?
ReplyDeleteCause just like the RKO it takes a ridiculous amount of time to set up and eliminates credulity. Nah, thats not really, why but Ive never liked either finisher for this reason.
ReplyDeleteAustin's Stunner is cool with me... though I dont know how Slaughters Clutch is so far ahead of the sweet ass Million $$ Dream
that's what I thought as well.
ReplyDeleteif Sting is in, where's the Eliminators TOTAL ELIMINATION?!
Miz who? I mean, if he was important, surely he'd be on TV.
ReplyDeleteI know it won them a bunch of matches, but Demolition's finisher always struck me as fairly weak.
ReplyDeleteWell, this looks pretty unremarka...
ReplyDelete"WWE Championship Match
Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Bob Backlund
Superstars – 30th July, 1994"Damn it, just take my money...
How on Earth could the RKO be so far ahead of The Diamond Cutter? I mean, that time when DDP had Eddie on his shoulders, like he was gonna powerslam him, but then spun him up in the air and brought down with a Diamond Cutter should have earned him a spot above the RKO on principal. The Diamond Cutter was incredible. I mean, he went out of a Jackhammer into it. And the opponent never jumped in the air either.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the deal with the Hart v Backlund match?
Also, it's a complete slap in the face that it's Shane McMahon's Coast to Coast, and not RVD's Van Terminator.
No love from the wwe for ultimate warriors gorilla press/big splash? Also in kayfabe how the fuck is the bonzai drop twenty spots below the 619. That's not even reys finisher is it? And at the time yokos move was killer
ReplyDeleteGranted, I didn't watch a lot of WCW, but I prefer Randy's RKO to the Diamond Cutter. It just seems a lot more impactful, while the DDP seems basically a stunner that people didn't flop around afterwards.
ReplyDeleteThey have to have the time Evan Bourne was RKO'ed out of a shooting star press right?
I know. I'm so buying this just for that match.
ReplyDeleteYup hard to argue the stunner isn't #1, such an awesome finisher.
ReplyDeleteThis starts off with a fucking clothesline? What are they going to talk about? How JBL's clothesline was somehow better than everyone else's? Also how did Heath Slater not win this?
ReplyDeleteThey had to toss bruno a bone
ReplyDeleteYeah I was thinking the crippler crossface would be in the low 30's/high 20's if all things were equal. It was a great finisher and very over.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a really little kid (like 6 or 7) I remember thinking shake rattle and roll was a killer move. Now I look back and think how stupid that move was.
ReplyDeleteIt's so crazy you can't just watch it on their website anymore.
ReplyDeleteIt's the match that caused Backlund to snap and start going Cross Face Chicken Wing crazy on the WWF.
ReplyDeleteOnly 3 discs? How will you account for Crash Holly defending the Hardcore Title 24/7? There had to be about 475 instant classics as a result of that rule
ReplyDeleteI think it's because the British Bulldog is BIZARRE! But yes, definitely worth working into conversation
ReplyDeleteI would buy History of the Raw GM. Especially if it's hosted by the laptop. Just make the incoming message noise to set up each comment from Steve Lombardi.
ReplyDeleteHogan's Legdrop and Stone Cold's Stunner should be tied for number 1.
ReplyDeleteplease someone help me with the name of it, but blitzkreigs finishing move was awesome!
ReplyDeletePhoenix Splash.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, my mom was always nice about my fanboyness, in that I believed it was all real. But she couldn't help herself when saw the Banzai Drop. She wouldn't stop talking about how it would crush a guy's chest cavity and kill him.
ReplyDeleteAnd why stop there? How about the 50 greatest special referees? Do some bits on the refereeing careers of Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Steve Austin, Taz, Jacques Rougeau, and Ken Shamrock
ReplyDeleteHe's like Dusty Rhodes in the 80's. He's too important to give away for free on TV!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED all the Bulldog maeuvers. They were unseen of in the WWF (at least to me) and made them stand out form the likes of the Killer Bees and such. Great tag team finsiher, second only to the Legion Of Doom's Doomsday Device.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget:
ReplyDelete50 Greatest Countouts
Monday Night Raw's Greatest Guest Hosts
100 Greatest Diva Matches (All on 1 disc)
and..
Mae Young's Greatest T...umm.. Hits
Hate to admit it.. but when the Rock & Roll Express hit that double drop kick the crowd used to go crazy down south. My favorite finisher (besides the DDT) of the 80's was always the slingshot suplex that Tully Blanchard used to do. I was amazed that more people didn't do it, but it always looked cool to me.
ReplyDelete
