Hey Scott,
Awhile ago (a few years I think), I sent you an email describing my
system for rating workers in pro wrestling. Well, I recently expanded
on that and figured rankings for every wrestler who's ever had a
3-star one-on-one match rated in the Observer. I came up with a Top
50 (51, actually, because of a 50th-place tie), and I'm so proud of
the system that I decided to start a blog and release a countdown.
Basically it works like this: I take the wrestler's 10 best matches,
total the ratings, and double that to get a number out of 100. Ties
are handled by comparing 11th-best matches, then 12th-best, and so on.
The ratings are taken from this blog, which compiles all 3-star
ratings from the Observer: http://starratingslist.blogspot.com/. The
reason there is a 50th-place tie is that there are only ten rated
matches for each of the two wrestlers tied for 50th.
As far as using Meltzer's ratings and not yours, don't feel bad, I've
read you online for 12 years now (and even bought one of your books
back in the day), but I never opened an issue of WON in my life.

You should read the WON, it’s pretty awesome. And my ratings generally match up to Dave’s within about 1/2* in most instances, so that list would probably give a pretty good indication of my own ratings anyway.
Are we including tag matches? Kobashi has almost 10 ***** singles matches and Misawa's not far behind, but then they have a bunch of ***** tag matches as well.. Are we counting those too?..
ReplyDeleteHe says that he was only counting one-on-one matches, which was made pretty obvious by the lack of tag matches for Davey Boy Smith. I was definitely not expecting to see the Warlord mentioned anywhere on that site. It's hard to believe that Davey didn't have 10 better one-on-one matches in his than Wrestlemania VII in his entire career. Scott gave 3 1/4 stars to the Beware of Dog match with Michaels, but apparently Meltzer must have given it less than 2 1/2? Then there was the Bulldog/HHH match on Smackdown with the Rock as the referee. I have no idea of the quality of the match itself, but the sliding People's Elbow had to be worth at least a star or two by itself.

ReplyDeleteAgreed that not counting at least 2-on-2 tag matches seems misguided. I mean, give 'em only half-credit if one feels so compelled, but it's still part of the portfolio.
ReplyDeleteI love DBS as much as anyone, but I don't think he's anywhere near the top 51 in-ring workers in North America, let alone the world since Meltzer started eating matches in the mid eighties... Seems like a bit of an impossible list to compile to everyone's satisfaction anyway...
