People Like Wrestling Show, Film At 11

http://www.f4wonline.com/more/more-top-stories/118-daily-updates/26699-raw-numbers-through-the-roof

Guess I'm gonna have to hurry up and do that review already.  Now if only they could remember how to do the whirlwind of media to build up PPVs, which actually generate MONEY for them.  But regardless, this site did record numbers yesterday for a RAW episode, so obviously the show was a huge deal.

Comments

  1. 6.3 million viewers in the 2nd and 3rd hours. Very impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  2. They drew a Login and Password?!

    That's awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  3. 3.8 overall and a 4.0 for the last two. That's about what I figured. Honestly anything lower would have been a disaster. That rating, especially with a three hour show, is going to plummet though.

    ReplyDelete
  4. As the only mariners fan on here, ichiro? Will you root for him on the yankees or not? I could care less about the ring but I hope he gets 3000 hits.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I believe that TV advertising rights generate more money for WWE than PPV's do, and only slightly less than Live Events and PPV's put together.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Right. I have no idea how they plan on filling three hours. There's just no way this is going to work.

    ReplyDelete
  7. $131.5M in TV rights fees in 2011 vs $78.3M for PPVs, so you are right about that.  I thought it was a great show and they did an amazing job promoting it.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Dude I couldn't even tell you at this point it's too fucking soul-crushing. I...I hadn't even considered that we're going to have to see Hit 3,000 in a Yankees jersey...FUCK.

I think he deserves to at least smell a Series for once in his life and the Yankees will probably do that for him. It's got to be nice to go from being The Only Fucking Guy to #8 in the line-up, it's basically the Ray Allen story again.

I guess I'll have to cheer for him even though...I mean, Jesus it's like seeing Kemp in a Lakers jersey or something. What the fuck is happening to the world?! I imagine many Tums being eaten to keep the bile from supporting NY from causing an ulcer.

I wonder what team Felix will be on when he finally pitches a no hitter. Texas ya think?

Lord knows he won't be in Seattle. No one ever is.

Watching Durant score the last basket in the Key basically raped and crushed any affinity I have for that town, the face of the Mariners leaving pretty much sealed it.

I'll take bets on whose franchise comes back to prominence first: Penn State or the M's.

    /heartbroken rant

  9. Since when has the Blog of Doom become a shill site for Wrestling Observer?

    ReplyDelete
  10. If you could care less about the ring, then you must care at least a little bit, to give yourself room to possibly care less about it under some unstated conditions.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Ha! Check out this guy! He thinks The Rock and The Undertaker and Charlie Sheen and Degeneration X and Brock Lesnar are ratings draws!

    Psshaw!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Bears repeating: HOLY SHIT did Lita look hot last night. In fact, between getting pinned by Lita in that shirt and The Fink announcing his entrance, did anyone have a better night at the 1,000 RAW than Heath Slater?

    ReplyDelete
  13. That says a lot more about the decline of PPV than it says about the money made off TV rights. Even a few years ago the PPV revenues destroyed everything else.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ichiro's gonna become a platoon player, so I'm not sure he even gets to 3,000 hits now.

If he really wanted to leave the Mariners as badly as media reports make it seem, then I don't think that 3,000 hits is all that important to him.  Or maybe it was, but once Wedge moved him out of leadoff and started giving him days off that he didn't want, he no longer had any incentive to remain a Mariner?

I don't know, but I get the feeling that this is the beginning of the end of Ichiro as a relevant starting player.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Would it be possible that if you're linking to a paid WO article we could get some context?  Although this is great for building hype =)

    ReplyDelete
  16. As an Oakland A's fan and padres season ticket holder you learn not to care about stuff like winning and world series championships.

    ReplyDelete
  17. People tune in next week wondering where Brock, Rock, Undertaker and DX are and are very confused about what a Ryback is. Then stop watching again.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think he's only about 500 hits away though. He could probably do that in about three years even in decline .

I know I'm the ten millionth person to say this but I wish ichrio showed up 8 years earlier to make run at pete roses record. ( for hits, not for the best haircut of all time, which is an unbreakable record)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh for sure this is the end of his "relevance" and you're probably right, a guy that wasted the first 8 or so years of his career in Japan probably doesn't care about the long-term numbers. (If he had come to America instead as he was offered he'd be like 500 away from freakin' Rose right now)

And really, his place in history is already solidified: The fucking guy has TEN 200+ hit seasons in a row (!!!) AND holds the record for most hits in a single season so 3,000 probably isn't a big deal for him.

It was going to be a big, big, BIG fucking deal for us at SafeCo though. And that's all that matters to my selfish ass, lol.

I think the ring is the biggest deal to him honestly. He basically said that he felt he didn't fit with the Mariners because they were "too young" which translates to "not good enough to get anywhere before I have to retire".

The parallels between Ray Allen going to Miami to play 20 minutes and Ichiro going to NY to bat #8 are scary.

    ReplyDelete
  20.  Probably why they are trying to get this WWE Network thing off the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  21. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCUsPnKD1gk

    ReplyDelete
  22. And then in six weeks when MNF starts people REALLY stop watching, which means Vince gets desperate.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Good, strong numbers, but I really doubt they can hold onto that viewership.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If he had left 500 hits away from Rose's record you would never see me post again because I would've cried myself into a psychotic break.

    ReplyDelete
  25.  Im a Yanks fan and thought Yanks got a steal but i think Ichiro is a stopgap for them. I dont see them bringing him back as he will get better offers on the open market following the season.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Only if he played every day.  He'll be hard-pressed to get 150 hits a year in 80 games.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It sucks that texas got so good and the angels now have an owner who will spend money. The best chance either one of our teams had was to play in a mediocre division. Maybe one of them will get switched to the nl .

Also rashard lewis and ray allen on the heat. Its the attack of the 2005 sonics. Unless maybe they play the thunder in the finals again, maybe they turn face and betray miami in game 7.

    ReplyDelete
  28. He certainly didn't "waste" eight years in Japan.  Without the discipline and training regimen he learned in Japan, he would never have become the player that fared so well in MLB.

And, he was the first Japanese position player EVER in the MLB, so saying he wasted eight years in Japan is a little like saying that Jackie Robinson wasted his first year in the Negro Leagues.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not so sure, you've got to remember that even if he's old he also comes with about $100 million worth of Asian merchandising opportunity.

They had some of that with Hadeki, I'm sure they remember how good it tasted.

    ReplyDelete
  30. And by the way, you've had SIX pitchers pitch in no-hitter this year alone!  Quit being so greedy!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh no, I just use that word because if it wasn't for that he could have *theoretically* made a go at Rose, that's all.

Waste is the wrong word, totally, unless you're an utterly selfish M's fan that just wants SOME FUCKING REASON to cheer his team, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That was quite funny

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, we're basically doomed until new owners come along (already the Seattle papers are floating the idea that Nintendo is looking to sell and letting Ichiro go was part of that...) but that's been the problem here in Seattle since forever.

We've never had an owner that was willing to risk it for the BIG money (the championship merchandise, the entire year of sell-out crowds following a title, the endorsements) always in favor of staying a conservative course and making enough money to be profitable but still a bunch of fucking losers.

For as much shit as people talk about Mark Cuban as least he CARES. He actually gives a shit about his fans and wants them to have a WINNER, not just make some money.

I'd give *ANYTHING* for a Mark Cuban in Seattle.

The Heat thing is great, when it was announced guys were selling Heat logo shirts (switched out to green and gold) at the bus/train stations in downtown lol. I really think Miami has totally claimed the Seattle area as an outpost of support (for at least the next 3 years)

    ReplyDelete
  34.  They did enjoy that money but the Yanks are trying to get to around 189 million with the payroll to avoid luxury tax. Swisher and/or Granderson will probably wind up being casualties due to this. I think Yanks want to get a bit younger too so I dont see Ichiro being more than this years Berkman.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Could be, I go to great lengths to avoid knowing how you guys operate, lol.

I will say, if Ichiro leaves New York without at least one douche chilling Sterling call I will be highly disappointed.

Ichi-far! Ichi-high! Ichi-gone! IchiRO is on an IchiROLLLLLL!!!!!

    Die in a fucking fire.

    ReplyDelete
  36. He's not going to play 80 games a year. It's a L/R platoon, and there's far more RHP than LHP. More like 120 games.

    ReplyDelete
  37.  "Goodness Gracious, Ichiro is in my box" Good times Suzyn, good times.

    ReplyDelete
  38. TELL ME MORE ABOUT POSADA.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That might be the oddest mix of baseball fandom I've ever herad.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey, I'm a lifelong White Sox fan, and I'd like to point out that I enjoy anything with "Seattle" and "No-Hitter" in the same sentence.

    They go together...perfectly! :o)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Granted, some of you guys may not be able to log in, but it's still newsworthy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Merchandise is a part of revenue sharing, so the Yankees don't benefit from it anymore than the other 29 teams. Signing a Japanese player like Ichiro or Matsui is more about the vagaries of brand recognition and penetration. I can't see the Yankees resigning a player that they don't expect to contribute solely for this purpose. They picked up Ichiro to replace Brett Gardner's defensive value, and maybe approach Gardner's offensive production if the change of scenery reinvigorates Ichiro (assuming he's still physically capable of it). With a healthy Gardner, the Yankees have no need of Ichiro. If he gets a ring, maybe he even resigns with the M's to retire there.

    ReplyDelete
  43. AJ as GM won't bring in viewers? You crazy man.

    ReplyDelete
  44. DID YOU KNOW?:

According to Trendrr, WWE Raw was the No. 1 program on Cable and Broadcast.
Social activity buzz for WWE Raw bested all broadcast programs combined for the day.

    WWE accumulated 52 worldwide trends during yesterday's three-hour telecast of WWE Raw including #Raw1000, #wwe, #raw, #dx and #undertaker.

At its peak, WWE Raw received over 9,000 tweets-per-minute, the top tweeted segment in the show's history, with the appearance of The Undertaker claiming the title of the biggest single social media moment of the show when activity spiked to more than 11,000 comments per minute.

There, thought I'd get that out of the way before it;s beaten into our heads on Smackdown and next week's Raw.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I know it's hard to hear, but literally anything you could get for Ichiro was for the best. He was never going to there by the time you guys can contend again, so anything you got for him was gravy.

Contending is going to be a long process, but I don't think so hopeless that you should resign yourself to Ichiro's 3,000 hit at the expense of even trying. I like Zduriencik for the most part, and his hiring of sabermetrician Tom Tango was pretty inspired. You're in the middle of the pack financially, which is close enough to compete. You just need some luck.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well I grew up an a's fan but have lived in san diego for 9 years. Love the padres park and the tickets were cheap as hell so I adopted them as my nl team.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't think that is right.  In 2001, their peak PPV year since they became a stock company, PPV income did exceed advertising and television rights, but only by $3M ($128M vs $125M).  In every year since, advertising and television rights has been their largest income source.  They used to break it up into 3 categories.

    ReplyDelete
  48.  To be fair, I WOULD expect Brock to be there through Summerslam at least.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Rating is about where people predicted it -- slightly under 4.0, but hurt by the added hour which dragged its average down a bit.  It is going to be all downhill from here though I think (in terms of numbers).

    ReplyDelete
  50. Said the man who failed utterly in predicting the renaissance that would go on to be known as the Crazy Chick Era.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Something I thought was funny during RAW was when they asked for us to vote on twitter for the AJ/Bryan wedding with either AJIDO or AJIDONT, later on they showed the results with AJIDONT winning with like 75% or something. Then a little later Cole talks about how AJIDONT is trending worldwide. So they are bragging about something they told you to put on twitter. Gotta love the WWE.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's been confirmed by meltzer. He's at pretty pretty much every Raw between now and then.

    ReplyDelete
  53.  Paul Heyman did get mounted by Stephanie

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree that it's newsworthy.  I simply would have liked if he used a news source that we didn't have to pay to see.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I believe I called 3.7 in the Raw thread, so I guess the joke is on me for it being .1 higher.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Actually that's way better than what they normally do, since they're basically saying that you (the fans) have interacted with the product and achieved something.  I mean, instead of pointlessly complimenting themselves over a nothing accomplishment, they're pointlessly complimenting the audience over a nothing accomplishment.

    ReplyDelete
  57. It is an awesome park.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hey, some of us Yankees fans are still pretty broken up about losing that Montero guy to your Ms. Especially given that our main catcher's 20 points below the Mendoza line.

As a NYY fan I'm thrilled by the signing. The guy's fucking awesome, I have tons of respect for him and I really hope that when he comes up to bat these days, it'll be with RISPs, and guys following him like Jeter who can drive in runs. I don't think the platoon player bit will last long - Swisher's too inconsistent in RF, Gardner's more or less gone for the year and Jones is making a season out of swinging wildly at balls a foot outside the K zone. I expect he'll be a regular in the lineup by the time October comes around, and hope he gets a ring.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Dave Roberts debuted in 1999, so he definately wasn't the first Japanese position player ever in the Majors.

    ReplyDelete
  60.  Agree. Their only competition in the fall will be MNF, but Raw will probably average about 4 million with the first hour factored in. That's a steep drop.

    ReplyDelete
  61. He'll totally get there. Remember the giant circle jerk event that Jeter's 3000th was, and that half of A-Rod's HR milestones have been?

As I said elsewhere in this thread, he won't be a platoon player long. Swisher's too inconsistent and won't be hanging around NY next year. Don't see Ibanez and Jones lasting to next year either. Between the Asian marketing/merchandising potential and the fact that he can still hit and steal bases, Cashman would be a fucking moron to get rid of him. Gardner/Granderson/Ichiro would not shock me as the OF lineup next year.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Really?  You're going to use a half-Japanese born on a US military base and raised in America as an exception?

Fine.  Ichiro was the first Japanese position player born and raised in Japan of two Japanese parents EVER in the MLB.

    ReplyDelete
  63. By the time Meltzer's "news" makes it to the markboards like 411, it's usually been tampered with.

    ReplyDelete
  64. What's Tout? Is this the new Twitter or is WWE trying to invent their own social media?

I think they forgot, or maybe never understood why people rallied behind Punk in the first place - he said the company stunk. He won a #1 contender match. Announced he was leaving. Said he would take the title. Nobody was overly interested in that...then he announces that John Cena isn't that good and the company is boring and lame, and everyone loves him. Assuming this goes where it usually goes, they'll be turning the guy who became popular by trying to change the shitty product into what makes the product shitty.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm a Royals fan. I understand fully.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ya know, I have a semi-serious question, I don't watch much "popular" tv, so maybe this is something that all those shows do, but do shows like American Idol or Dancing With the Stars, or the Bachelorette, do they ever gloat about what's "trending" on their shows or how many Facebook followers they have?  It seems like they're just trying so hard to be cool it comes off really pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Scott's Blog of Baseball Tonight.

    WTF.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Holy Shit Jobber123,

You're like Chin Jr. when it comes to posting.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I do love the way he uses that word, usually followed by "bullshit".

    ReplyDelete
  70. Fuck if I know, I watch like...Game of Thrones and Mad Men.

You may ask why I responded, but I just felt that I need to say that I don't watch reality tv shit.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Maybe they realized Cena/Punk was a money feud that's never really been blown off, first time Cena started feuding with Miz, second time Punk turned face and ADR happened, maybe third time's the charm?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Ha, I guess it was more intended as a question to all the Blog of Doomers instead of just you.  I'm not much of a reality TV watcher myself, so it's curious to me is this just somethingn that the WWE does or is it common practice in the reality/popular tv genre?  You don't watch Monday Night Football and have ESPN tout how many Facebook followers they have.  Just seems really strange.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Fuck. Rodriguez on the DL with a broken hand. Hell of a show by Seattle between their starting and relief pitching and their hitting clicking for once, but Hernandez is a dickwad.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yeah I think vince is the only one insecure enough to do that shit.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I've got a lot of downtime at work fuj. I sit in my office and read shit online while I watch netflix or play video games. I would start taking naps but no one knocks before they come in. Probably not a good employee but I do fill it up on the b.o.d. I think I've topped out at 3rd place though. I'm never catching chin or Ryan Murphy though. Although I'm not even sure how I caught up to you.

    ReplyDelete
  76. You get no sympathy from me.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Goodbye 3.2, Hello 2.8

    ReplyDelete
  78. Are you thinking playoffs already for the A's?

    ReplyDelete
  79. well, CM Punk probably had sex with her later, so....

    ReplyDelete
  80. I know American Idol will mention the number of voters they get every week, and if it breaks a season or series record, then we'll know about it. But no, I've never heard the word "trending" on shows like that.

    ReplyDelete
  81.  Wait, with who Lita or Stephanie, or maybe both! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  82.  And we get the monster pushes of HHH and Cena and the return of Orton. Say goodbye to TV time for Punk/DB/AJ/Ryback/etc once MNF starts.

    ReplyDelete
  83.  Well, I watch Melissa and Joey (I've liked Melissa Joan Hart for years) and they always have different hashtags pop during the show. Same thing with Pretty Little Liars and I guess most of the shows on ABC Family.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Ugh, luck? Dude...we're Seattle. The entire history of sports here has been watching people walk away to do great things.

A-Rod, Griffey, Moyer, Randy Johnson, Beltray, Varitech, Cameron, Olerude, Ibanez (we let him leave TWICE) and now Ichiro...

And that's JUST baseball, I could make a similar list for football and basketball (Kemp, Payton, Barry, Allen, Rashard Lewis, Desy Mason oh and...THE WHOLE FUCKING TEAM...)

It's endless. On further thought this is actually going to be great for me, just like with my newfound basketball team (been pro-Heat since The Decision) I'll get to watch October baseball for the first time in over a decade too!

I guess you're right though, we could some day contend again. All we need now is 3 hitters and at least 2 pitchers! Not a big deal, totally doable in a few years...or decades...or never.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yeah it's going to be pretty interesting to watch. I expect Ichiro to show up BIG in October since it will be the first time he's been in a Playoff since winning Rookie of the Year back in '01. Also, according to what I read on ESPN he averages almost .400 at that big new shopping mall with the Yankee logo on it.

Ray Allen, Ichiro...I just need the Pats or Steelers to nab Marshawn Lynch and then I can be done with sports for a few years secure in the knowledge that all my favorites got rings lol.

    ReplyDelete
  86. And ultimately that's what rubs me the wrong way about how they do social media.  If they were truly bad ass, they wouldn't mention "hey we have more Facebook followers than the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL combined".  It's total insecurity, especially when I KNOW the WWE isn't more popular than the NFL, it looks even more pathetic.
