Hey Scott, Adam from the blog here. Couple quick questions that I hope the rest of the DOOMers can chime in on too:
1. I was poking around the old DDTDigest site, and they have an article about the history of blading (http://www.ddtdigest.com/features/blading/). At the end, they say "Think about that next time you see Kevin Nash's un-scarred forehead" or something like that. It got me thinking, how many well-known wrestlers besides Nash have never really bled? Come to think of it, I've never seen Scott Hall blade, though I've hardly seen any of his AWA work. I never saw Rey Jr. or Owen Hart blade. Sting, to my knowledge, only juiced in his match with Vader where he got slaughtered (awesome match right there, BTW). Can you think of any other well-known guys that never bladed, or at least only did it once like Sting? Not counting guys that made their debut in the WWE after it went PG and the old exacto-knife-blade-in-the-wrist-tape was banned, obviously...
2. Are there any guys that made it through their career without serious injury? Define "serious injury" however you want to, but limit it to only guys with at least 10 years in the biz. The only guy I could think of is Jeff Jarrett , but then I remembered that he missed Souled Out 2000 due to a concussion. Outside of that. I got nothing.
Forgive me if these questions have already been asked...
1. Dusty Rhodes and Abdullah the Butcher! No, that sounds wrong. Toughie, actually, as I don't remember too many guys who were hesitant to gig themselves. I don't recall Arn Anderson doing it too many times, or Ricky Steamboat. In fact I can't recall a single match where the Dragon got all good and bloodied up, so he seems like he might be a good bet. Scott Hall has been in a few bloodbaths before, although I can't remember specifics, but I've seen pictures in the Apter mags back when he was just Scott Hall and not Razor Ramon yet. And Owen definitely bladed in Stampede.
2. I can't recall too many cases where Owen Hart was injured outside of his banged up knees and...you know. Jarrett was definitely someone who worked a super-safe style until he ran into Vince Russo. Dusty Rhodes might be another one, because he did fuck all in the ring and it's hard to get injured when you're lying on the mat selling a nerve pinch. Which probably explains his longevity.
Tell the truth, Scott: You've never forgiven Dusty for inventing the Dusty Finish.
ReplyDeleteThat's weird about Sting actually -- that GAB 1992 match is the only time I can ever recall him blading as well. I don't recall the Warrior ever blading in the WWF or WCW either.
ReplyDeleteJericho only had the 1999 WCW ankle (?) injury as far as I can recall.
ReplyDeleteAnd for someone who has wrestled for an eternity, I don't recall Kane getting injured too often. He had the bicep tear in 2002, but I can't think of anything else.
Has Lawler ever had a serious injury with the exception of his heart attack?
ReplyDeleteSting has bladed once or twice in TNA. And I think he bladed late into his WCW run in that Vampiro feud.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of blade jobs, what is the most effective blade job ever? Has to be Austin at WM 13 right?
ReplyDeleteWithout a doubt.
ReplyDeleteI could have sworn seeing a pic of Steamboat all bloodied up in an old PWI mag. I believe it was from his days of teaming with Jay Youngblood during the Slaughter-Kernodle feud.
ReplyDeleteWas he busted open by Jake Roberts when he took a DDT on the floor?
Michaels at Badd Blood & HHH in the Royal Rumble street fight were both very effective, but those were great matches anyway. I think that Eddy in the JBL match & Kerry Von Erich in the AWA superclash were arguably more effective cause they helped add drama to matches that weren't anything special.
ReplyDeleteThere's always the 'job that gave us the Muta Scale.
ReplyDeleteBooker T bladed once against the Big Show, but I don't recall any other time.
ReplyDeleteKerry Von Erich against Jerry Lawler was a goon one too. So was Bret Hart against the British Bulldog.
ReplyDeleteNash has bladed at least a few times. I recall a match with him and Foley in TNA that was rather bloody. He also bled in the Hell in the Cell match with Triple H from 2003. No one in the early-mid 90's WWF bled, and same with late 90's WCW with Hogan and Flair being the rare exception.
ReplyDelete- Also I recall Arn Anderson bleeding leading up to Wrestlemania X8 via The Undertaker.
I wasn't a fan back then, but what about Bret? I seem to recall him bragging about how his safe style caused him to never miss a date.
ReplyDeleteforgot the dvd, but there's an old clip of lawler being press slammed out of the ring, but he lands wrong and breaks his leg.
ReplyDeleteand he broke something playing softball back in the 80s that caused him to miss ring time
Yep. God, just thinking of that match when I saw it for the first time with the drama and workrate, it still gives me goosebumps.
ReplyDeleteUndertaker in hitc vs. brock
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember Owen having a somewhat-severe knee injury circa '93 (after High Energy but obviously before the the Hart family storyline). It was mentioned on Superstars.
ReplyDeleteAnd Kane isn't a lazy-ass in the ring, either. Sure, he's not the most technical wrestler but he does hustle in there, which is surprising since big guys are more susceptible to injury.
ReplyDeleteDoes Papa Shango goo coming out of his head count as Warrior blading?
ReplyDeleteI think his bragging was more about not harming another wrestler seriously with his style. But yeah, he's up there. He cut a crazy schedule in the late 80s/early 90s.
ReplyDeleteMan, Scott's inbox is backed up, I sent this in about a month ago. And yeah, Booker T is one guy I should of thought of with respect to blading. And the Warrior.
ReplyDeleteThere was the cracked sternum in the Dino Bravo match that featured in Wrestling With Shadows. I don't recall how much time he missed though, if any.
ReplyDeleteMichaels at Badd Blood is probably the only one that comes close. It really put over the HIAC match.
ReplyDeleteDid Rick Martel ever blade when he was in the AWA. I certainly don't remember him doing it in the WWF. I also don't recall Tito blading either, but then I haven't seen any of the matches from his feud with Valentine back in the mid 80's so I could be wrong on that one
ReplyDeleteI remember Sting at least got busted up in Wargames at Wrestle War '91. I know a lot of guys bled in the '92 Wargames but not sure if Sting did.
ReplyDeleteHe broke his arm in SMW.
ReplyDeleteapples to blowjobs, i forgot he bladed.
ReplyDeletethat was the match that MADE HBK in my eyes.
Arn bladed in the early WarGames matches.
ReplyDeleteexcept for 91, when they had OBVIOUS blood packets in the ring. That match... is terrible.
What if you win a gold medal with a BROKEN FREAKIN' NECK, does that still count as an injury?
ReplyDeleteHe also got one of his testicles ruptured by Tommy Rich. That's gotta hurt.
ReplyDeleteChico bladed in a cage match with Valentine.
ReplyDeleteReally? Nothing Michaels did the previous 10 years jump out at you?
ReplyDeleteThen Lawler decided to pass it along to Tommy Dreamer.
ReplyDeleteNot while wrestling.
ReplyDeletePlease forgive me for not being a fan.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry. :(
It apparently it doen't stop him from chasing barely legal women around. Imagine what his sex drive would be if he DIDN'T?
ReplyDeleteHe didn't invent it, he popularized it. Technically Eddie Graham is who we should hate.
ReplyDeleteI can not liking the dude because he was a dick. But his ring work?
ReplyDeleteThis wasn't a blade job, it was bleeding the hard way; but i'll bring it up since it's a related topic.
ReplyDeleteCena bleeding in the Brock match after the elbows had to be one of the most surprising moments in recent WWE history and def raised the intensity of that match.
Aside from that, can't recall any other blood in a Cena match pre-PG era. However, I didn't watch all that much Smackdown. Can anyone else remember him blading?
What about The Rock? I can't ever remember him being hurt. I know he got banged up a bit in 97 but it wasn't serious or anything. And when he came back heel it helped him.
ReplyDeleteHe did. He wasn't really used on TV too much around that time because of it. That's when he busted out the blue and silver singlet instead of the poofy pants. He had Razor Ramon slap him around on Mania in January then didn't do anything until the Bret fued.
ReplyDeleteEverybody has bladed in RoH right? Bryan did it against Morishma, Punk against Raven, the Briscoes against....everyone.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I could of sworn I've seen bloody pics of Steamboat in the old Apter mags. Jake didn't "cut" him open with that DDT, but he damn sure almost "busted" him open.
ReplyDeleteAgain... Forgive me for not being a fan.
ReplyDeleteIt does happen, you know.
Im. Sorry. ;(
Depends if you count getting tits removed as an injury.
ReplyDeleteWell he missed the rest of his career with the goldberg kick so I guess that counts.
ReplyDeleteHe was practicing a SSP in the pool IIRC
ReplyDeleteIts not like he was weight lifting, or jackin it.
Just re-watched that match earlier. Did Brock blade or was it hard way? Because he got CRACKED with that chain. You could fucking hear it.
ReplyDeleteThat's what really annoys me about people throwing around the term "great worker" without really knowing what it means. Somewhere along the way, worker became used to describe guys who are technically exciting or flashy. Inside the business, a great worker is someone who you would want to work with every night because their shit looks good, they're safe, and you can trust them. A great worker is not somebody who goes out every night with the intention of getting more snowflakes from Meltzer.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm a weirdo, but the ending was so sour for me, that I haven't gone back and re-visited the match. From what I can remember, it looked like a real shot. Surprised Brock didn't get concussed.
ReplyDeleteMaybe is was a trade off, Cena allowed to be cut with the elbows and Brock returned in kind. All pre-planned of course.
He had an EPIC bladejob in the I Quit Match against JBL at Judgement Day 2005. Bradshaw annihilated him with a chairshot and Cena bled all over the damn place. By the end of the match, the blood was all over his chest, stomach, and shorts. He look like he just came from a slaughterhouse.
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember reading something about Owen busting his testicles on someones head during a mistimed leapfrog. Wanna say one of the Survivor Series.
ReplyDeleteHow can anyone forget The Steamer doing a blade job here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkJUZHXvx-Y
ReplyDeleteThis was my favorite match as a kid, and goddamn are these two guys awesome here.. Fuji too.. And the commentary is 5 stars.. I *ALWAYS* rented this VHS anytime I was sick and stayed home from school.. Best of the WWF Vol. 5.. my favorite volume in the series..
Impossible, no one is that insane/awesome.
ReplyDeleteI believe he missed in-ring time for it, so I'd count it.
ReplyDeleteYou can leave your "IWC" membership card at the door Fuj. Thank you for your services. :-)
ReplyDeleteAh yes! Forgot about that one. He was the Blue Blazer at the time, so that would have had to be 89.
ReplyDeleteIs that the one where Pillman nearly gets killed? I wouldn't call it terrible, but I certainly won't be going out of my way to see it again.
ReplyDeleteThat's still the worst thing I've ever seen on a wrestling show, though Dreamer getting his fingers broken is right up there.
ReplyDeleteHe was out during much of the middle of '97 with a triceps injury, I believe.
ReplyDeleteWhatever match immediately preceded Edge cashing in the very first MITB Cena is an absolute mess after that. They can't show that on WWE TV these days and it's "censored" to black and white on re-released media.
ReplyDeleteWas his ankle stuff in the spring of '97 pure angle?
ReplyDeleteI miss blood. Was it Survivor Series 2003 when Michaels was down 3-1 and just bled like a pig?
ReplyDeleteThat's still the slickest blading I've ever seen, with him doing it in mid-air.
ReplyDeleteJerry Lawler is easily the biggest exception to the injury rule. He even talks about it in his autobiography that came out a few years back, where he says the only in-ring injuries he's ever really had are just typical bumps and bruises. In the early 80s, he broke his leg playing football with friends and was out for awhile, but he says that was the only serious injury he's ever suffered and it wasn't from wrestling.
ReplyDeleteI throw my vote in for Eddie vs. JBL on both counts.
ReplyDeleteHe bled so much people were legitimately worried about his health after that. And it worked to get JBL somewhat over even if a lot of people (including many here) still didn't totally accept him. He needed a brutal win to get out from being midcard for life and Eddie donated a quart of blood to the cause.
This one of Heenan (not sure if blade or hardway) is pretty iconic:

Vince peeking over the ring apron in his WM match against Hogan
ReplyDeleteI thought he broke his arm during a match and continued, earning him the "Lionheart"moniker.
ReplyDeleteI know Dusty had several famous kayfabe injuries at the hands of the Horsemen- the broken ankle in the cage and the broken hand in the parking lot. I always assumed that like many kayfabe injuries those angles might have been used to cover real injuries. Was that not the case?
ReplyDeleteI know on an empirical level that the slashing elbows that Brock was doing to Cena aren't designed to concuss you and are just designed to draw blood. I know that people who take those say that they feel like a sting and not a blow.
ReplyDeleteBut I also know that having a 280 lb UFC HW champion (who at one point didn't like me) on top of me delivering legit 80%+ speed elbows sounds like absolutely no fun whatsoever.
People don't say it enough because like you said everyone was just pissed off at the ending but seriously props to Cena for agreeing to take the first 7 minutes of that match. Between the elbows (including one full on post-up elbow), knees to the ribs and the body punches, Cena took a pretty serious beating in there.
And yet you rip into his frighteningly large ass every chance you get. What, specifically, is your beef with the Dream?
ReplyDeleteWasn't that just a rumor? Kat was "of age", the pedo charges against him were dropped, is there any legit proof Jerry likes jailbait?
ReplyDeleteNo, he was legitimately injured, although I forget exactly why. It may have been an out of ring injury.
ReplyDeleteDusty deserves a lot of legit criticism for the things he did as a booker back in the 80s. True enough he developed many great match concepts but when it came to his character he clearly cared more about getting himself over and not his opponents.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. I just read Bret's book. Here's an exact quote from the preface "I gratefully acknowledge the hundreds of wrestlers I worked with in thousands of matches over twenty-three years, and am proud that I never injured another wrestler to the point that he couldn't work the next day. Regrettably, I can't say the same about some of those who worked with me."
ReplyDeleteNash and Foley had a match? Man, I can't imagine how it would have been any good.
ReplyDeleteHonky Tonk Man as far as I know has never been hurt inside the ring.
ReplyDeleteYep. I once played it in super slow mo to show my wife how awesome it was.
ReplyDeleteYep, that's the one.
ReplyDeleteWell he killed and bankrupted an entire territory, so there's that.
ReplyDeleteI thought he fucked himself up with the SSP in Mexico, or was that a 450? He busted his ribs and it didn't look that good anyway.
ReplyDeleteI knew he almost died after he fucked up a Avalanche Frankenstiener. Jericho is a really lucky guy, in a lot of ways.
He wrestled a really bloody brawl against...the Heavenly Bodies? (I think) with it, so...yeah, there's that.
ReplyDeleteIt's not really a mystery. He thinks Dusty was a crappy wrestler and a crappy booker. Scott is by no means the only guy to feel that way.
ReplyDelete"The True Definition"?
ReplyDeleteYou mean Lance Storm's definition. Listen, I like Storm too, but let's not go getting a couple wise men and declare him the messiah. He is one man with one opinion. He is not the divine arbitrator of all things wrestling.
Ephebophilia, not pedophilia.
ReplyDeleteFuj was a WCW guy if I recall correctly.
ReplyDeleteWell it's not like Jerry was doing much more than punches and piledrivers.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he isn't. I just wanted specifics. (Dust was a little....I'll be polite and say "lazy" in his prime.)
ReplyDelete13 of one, a baker's dozen of the other.
ReplyDeleteI also thought he got a pretty fucked up shoulder after Eddie Gilbert hit Lawler with a car that they had to extend the length of time for the angle to allow Lawler to heal properly.
ReplyDeletePlus he also had a groin pull the likes you've never seen in your whole life.
ReplyDeleteI knew Rock had had some kind of arm/shoulder injury, just couldn't think of what it was.
ReplyDeleteI'd say there's a substantial difference in fucking someone who's sixteen and someone who's six.
ReplyDeleteI can't recall RVD ever blading. He bled hardway on many occasions but never seriously bled in a match from blading.
ReplyDeleteI showed it to my ex about 10 years ago, she didn't believe that blood in wrestling was real and it's the only match I had on tape where anyone bladed on camera. Still wasn't impressed...
ReplyDeleteNo wear near the epic I Quit one with JBL but he had a good one going with his match with Umaga at the Royal Rumble.
ReplyDeleteBut that's a good point about the chairshots, I even remember The Undertaker swinging some pretty mean chairs when he did.
Elimination Chamber at New Year's Revolution 2006
ReplyDeleteNot a Storm fan so whatever point you're trying to make is lost on me.
ReplyDeleteUm...you're forgetting high risk maneuvers from the second rope. Geez.
ReplyDeleteWhat about excessive blading?
ReplyDeleteI swear every time Vince is in the ring, he blades to the point of absurdity. For instance, the Zack Gowen match that ended five seconds after he bladed, or the one sided Undertaker Buried Alive match.
And that is exactly why blood can be a good thing, if used VERY sparingly. Same principle applies to HiaC matches, very generally, of course.
ReplyDeleteNot to be morbid, but seems like Owen should be disqualified on similar grounds. RIP.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure all those hardway bladejobs were just him blading right above the eye.
ReplyDeleteWhich is, apparently, insanely difficult to recover from.
ReplyDeleteBut that's a gross exaggeration, right? I'm not enough of a Hart expert to cite a counterexample, but I seem to remember people around here calling BS on that in previous conversations.
ReplyDeleteI"m with you. Such a douche. And I've always hated the HBK/Ricky Morton "get the hell beat of you and then hit one move to make a comeback and win" formula.
ReplyDeleteWell, then it's probably for the best that she's your ex
ReplyDeleteIIRC Edge doesn't blade very often. Something about that feels off but I swear I remember hearing it somewhere, and he never got bloody during his Hardcore feud with Foley in '06 (when blood was still legal).
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone recall any by ol' Edgester?
Correction: He wrestled a GREAT really bloody brawl agains the Heavenly bodies [with a broken arm]. One of hte more underrated matches of the era, considering the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteI believe Phrederic is referencing some stuff Storm has written on his site: http://www.stormwrestling.com/index1.html as well as said in interviews.
ReplyDeleteHis commentary, love it or hate it, is actually pretty interesting. Well worth a read.
He bled in his feud with Kurt Angle in '02, and by his own account overdid it with the blade and needed something like 20 stitches, which may explain why he wasn't keen on doing it regularly (it may also just be vanity, as I beleive Edge regards himself as a very handsome man)
ReplyDeleteHe talks about the difference between good workers and good wrestlers. Good wrestlers are the most entertaining, while good workers are safe ones.
ReplyDeleteDifference between RVD and Yokozuna.
As much as watching Lawler matches sucks ass, it's hard to argue against a guy who never got hurt, fought safe matches, and was over as fuck in his own territory for years. It'd be horrible for us fans if ALL guys were like him, but we'd have a lot more of our stars, I would think.
ReplyDeleteThe story I always heard was it was the same morning as the match, in Jim Cornette's pool, and he wrestled against doctors orders, ballsy and very dumb at the same time.
ReplyDeleteVagina size?
ReplyDeleteThis guy gets it.
ReplyDeleteThis guy gets it.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite matches is the 60 min draw between Curt Hennig and Nick Bockwinkle that aired on ESPN on New Years Eve 1989. It is semi-famous and is included on both the AWA and Mr. Perfect DVDs I think. Hennig was still on the verge of being a main guy and Bockwinkle was the champ. Hennig cut a good one and had Bockwinkle in the figure four as time expired. The image of Hennig gushing blood, but on the offensive as time expired made me a fan for life and was the match was really what got him over the hump in terms of pecking order in the AWA
ReplyDeleteI think it's just generally acknowleged that Lawler pretty much exclusively likes younger women. I read that few in the business were surprised when he was charged with statutory rape, even though he was exonerated.
ReplyDeleteAnd while I think of it- the I Quit Match at Starcade 85- everyone was bleeding in almost every match, so they went over the top- both Magnum and Tully were a mess and it really got over just how brutal the match was.
ReplyDeleteDidn't miss a PPV (hell, they named the ppv Rock Bottom), Raw title match, or Halftime Heat because of it. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with that is that almost no fan could really tell how "good" a worker is without actually having worked with them. Most fans just say a "Good worker" is "a guy whose matches I like to watch because they are good".
ReplyDeleteIt's true. It's true.
ReplyDeleteRey did bleed against JBL at Judgement Da '06. (May have already been mentioned, but it's late and I don't feeling like scrolling).
ReplyDeleteIn defense of Ricky Morton, he got the shit beat out of him to build heat for the hot tag. Totally different than Shawn.
ReplyDeleteFor as much high-flying acrobatics and such, it seems like Rob Van Dam should have no knees and a broken back by now. Obviously the dude has had injuries, but he's had pretty remarkable overall health despite working a strenuous style.
ReplyDeleteDat ain't right.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get that line or is that an original? "But let's not go getting a couple wise men and declare him the messiah." Awesome.
ReplyDeleteHis hair was mussied up a good bit at times.
ReplyDeleteThere was one pic of him bleeding against Savage in a cage match at a house show during their feud.
ReplyDeleteThat was like lightning in a bottle, too. The flow of the match and the flow of the blood just made it poetic and could never be duplicated (although it's been tried several times). The fact that he wasn't doing it all the time like a Flair or HHH helped added to the realism or surrealism.
ReplyDeleteAnd as others are pointing out, I'd have to consider voting for Michaels-Taker HiaC. It's a shame they happened roughly 6 months apart because they both deserved a Match of the Year nod.
That's crazy. I showed it to my ex, too. But she already had a celeb crush on HBK and it only made her more enamored with him... she was kind of a dark/perverse person.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Also loved the visual, when the camera in the ring, is looking up on the ceiling of the cell, and u see Taker grind Shawn's face into it, and blood drips down!
ReplyDeleteAccording to Cornette in a shoot, he did it while practicing a move.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding. Talk about a clash of styles.
ReplyDeleteNash was pretty bloody vs Booker T in a cage @ Fall Brawl 2000. A match which was like 8 minutes for some reason. Better than Superbrawl X main event Hall-Jarrett-Sid world title match which was like 6 minutes. WCW had pacing issues
ReplyDeleteIn more ways than one. Crazy bitch...
ReplyDeleteIn other words, the difference between Rob Fienstein and Micheal Jackson?
ReplyDeleteEdge of course, is the only person to have this strange and outlandish belief.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great match, probably Lance Storm's best one. Come to think of it, I don't recall seeing Jericho blade after that, though I'm probably just forgetting it. Shit, after that bloodbath he earned the right to not have to do it again.
ReplyDeleteIt's not exactly an original concept, but I believe the wording is mine.
ReplyDeleteI mean, in Talib Kweli's Ms. Hill, while talking up the skills of Lauryn Hill, he says
"and no I ain't saying you Christ, that would be sacriligous right?
but you can blow and you nice, sisters them raps is vicious"
Hasn't that meme ran it's course?
ReplyDeleteShamone.
ReplyDeleteFienstein liked young boys....
ReplyDeleteAllegedly.
I'm thinking that the least effective one was Luger's in that match with Flair that was stopped by the Maryland Athletic Commission.
ReplyDeleteWho says they're female?
ReplyDelete*Eyebrow wriggle*
Oh its terrible and i will tell you why.
ReplyDelete-from the beginning you can see the blood bubbles on the mat.
-you can hear one 3 distinct occasions spots being called into the boom mic in the corners.
-you can also hear Sid say "PUT ME IN THE FIGURE FOUR" from the boom mic... from the middle of the ring.
-you can see Sid smearing one of the faces... face with fake blood as he is gettin his face grinded into the mesh.
-then theres the botched powerbomb/fucked finish.
According to your rant he wasn't even on that show, so I'm thinking 88.
ReplyDeleteFire is bad... mmmkay?
ReplyDeleteHe broke his ankle to where he had to forfeit the TV title... and pretty much left the company after that. I think he did one more ppv shot against Lynn and then id some movie.
ReplyDeleteHuh, I've only seen a bad VQ YouTube video of it where the sound was terrible, so I never noticed any of that except the finish. I should seek out a better quality video of it, that sort of Botchamania HOF-worthy clusterfuck sounds like it's right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was teenage boys, not Sandusky young boys.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I probably shouldn't have lumped them together.
ReplyDeleteOK, found a better copy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTMJ803n5ps for those who haven't seen it) and now I see all the blood capsules and blatant spot calling. Jesus... KAYFABE, people!
ReplyDeleteFireball doesn't start with P, which would ruing my alliteration.
ReplyDeleteThough I guess I could use Punches, Piledrivers and Pyromania.
Nothing tops Chris Jericho's bladejob at Smoky Mountain Wrestling's "Night Of Champions" in the excessive blading department.
ReplyDeleteEvery Ric Flair TNA segment deserves a mention as well.
I'm pretty sure Rob bladed in ECW on a semi-regular basis, although I don't remember ever seeing either Lance Storm or Little Guido blade.
ReplyDeleteDusty was busy working behind the scenes, those kayfabe injuries were just a way to temporarily take him off TV so that he could have extra time to book the shows, scout talent, soothe egos, etc.
ReplyDeleteWell, Lawler did break Paul Heyman's jaw once, not to mention he had severly swollen Tommy Dreamer's testicles from some botched Singapore cane shots, so you can't really call Lawler a safe worker.
ReplyDeletePretty much everyone except Mike Bennett.
ReplyDeleteBad News Allen claims to have been injured by Bret. a concussion from stiff chair shots if i recall correctly.
ReplyDeleteWow, fake blood capsules. Haven't seen that in wrestling in a LONG time. That and blue screen promos are two 90's wrestling staples that are completely extinct now. Thank goodness there's real blood and real sets in today's wrestling.
ReplyDeletePlease tell me the difference between an adult guy fucking a teenage boy... and an adult guy fucking a younger boy.
ReplyDeleteIm nothing.
ReplyDeleteTake my catchphrases and theres no reason for me to be here.
What the hell was with that finish? Did they just call an audible on that match like Austin vs Owen from Summerslam?
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Lawler have his testicles ruptured during a match with Austin Idol? Or was that just kayfabe?
ReplyDeleteAt least they used capsules. Russo just doused everyone in blood from the ceiling.
ReplyDeleteI was just watching Midnight Express vs Rock 'n Roll Express from the Superstars of the Superstation show, and I was so disappointed to see Robert Gibson playing Ricky Morton.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of God, he never got hurt during his illustrious wrestling career. Then again, Shawn Michels did carry most of the load on that dream team.
ReplyDeleteI thought that Owen Hart dying was kind of bad too.
ReplyDeleteThe Zack Gowen match was hardway, actually, which makes it all the more brutal. The edge of the chair hit him right in the head and it erupted like a geyser.
ReplyDeleteThe UT match was absolutely excessive, though. You mean to tell me that one single punch unleashes a volcano of crimson?
That's what Jericho said in his book as well. He was practicing a Shooting Star Press, but like a dumbass he didn't properly protect himself or use a safer landing spot, landed awkwardly, and broke his arm.
ReplyDeleteWell I doubt Jerry had much experience with a kendo stick (outside the bedroom at least).
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that RVD has a sick stretching routine, which has helped him avoid injuries.
ReplyDeleteBut Shawn wouldn't have the skills to carry God if it wasn't for God.
ReplyDeleteYup.
ReplyDeleteI remember when Lance was in WCW, he used to criticize The Rock, his workrate and the People's Elbow. Then he wrestled him and changed his tune.
Of course, the pop of Rock using the People's Elbow once on a throwaway RAW was probably more noise from the crowd than Lance Storm earned in his entire career.
But God wouldn't have even been on the card had Vince not booked him.
ReplyDeleteAh, but Vince and WWE wouldn't even exist unless God did created him.
ReplyDeleteBut God couldn't have been on PPV if Vince hadn't created sports entertainment.
ReplyDeleteEdge was a bloody mess at wrestlemania 22 wasn't he!
ReplyDeletewhich actually suits Bennet's whole "sports entertainer" persona
ReplyDeleteBoth my friend and I still bust into manaical laughter whenever we see that scene. So full of awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Steamboat when the Dangerous Alliance attacked him on Worldwide and supposedly broke his nose on the CONCRETE (!) floor. I remember they blurred it out all "COPS" style but you could tell he was bleeding.
ReplyDeleteWas that hardway or some sort of shenanigans?
I dunno about "a bloody mess" but I just watched a recap video and you're right, he did get bloody after the barbed-wire bat spot.
ReplyDeleteI remembered the thumbtack bump and the flaming table but for some reason I thought he didn't blade. Guess I was wrong.
Do injuries count if they happen in the parking lot of a Boston Pizza?
ReplyDeleteWhat Phrederic said.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but no one actually saw that, outside of the people in the arena that night.
ReplyDeleteusually someone bleeding is intended to make the violence in matches look more "realistic". but the cut in the Undertaker/Vince match is so over the top it that to me it actually makes it totally impossible to "suspend my disbelief". it's just too much!
ReplyDelete"like him" or "more like him"? if the latter, I don't see your point.
ReplyDeletedidn't the WWE use blood capsules for a short period of time as well? (2002? 2003?)
ReplyDeleteFor all the crazy shit he's done over the years I don't think Jeff Hardy has ever been injured
ReplyDeleteYeah they did because I remember an episode of Smackdown from early 2000 when Jeff Hardy dived off the top rope and put Edge through a table which was outside the ring. If you watch that closely, you can pretty clearly see Edge put a blood capsule in his mouth while he's lying there on the table waiting for Hardy's move to hit. Of course, once the move hit Edge started magically bleeding from the mouth.
ReplyDeleteAnd Ken Shamrock must have loved the taste of those blood capsules because he was using those so much that Scott started making jokes about it.
Yeah, it figures that WCW would waste money on stupid stunts like that instead of going with the much cheaper blood capsules.
ReplyDeleteDidn't WCW once do a dumb stunt where Sting was drenched in blood then a few days later on Thunder, Sting showed up in the building still drenched in blood? What was the point of that? Were they trying to tell us that one of their top guys only showers about once a week?
Just watched that version. Much better quality and I am seriously laughing out loud at the sight of the Horsemen coming out to the Ben-Hur knockoff music that Jim Herd made Flair use as punishment.
ReplyDeleteHe wasn't going to do anything that'd kill himself.
ReplyDeleteWhat's kind of sad about the VQ is that the video in the link is from a VHS tape (you can see the tracking lines at the start of it), while the other video with the WWE logo on the screen looks so bad that it's pretty much un-watchable.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing both shows were taped at the same time and no one thought to tell Sting to wash that shit off.
ReplyDeleteDidn't they do the blood-from-the-ceiling thing once and miss the ring, ruining the clothes of all the fans in the first few rows? I swear I remember hearing something like that at the time.
The age of consent is 18 in California and 16 in Nevada.
ReplyDeleteIt's a tricky subject. But I believe that teenagers are usually in better control of their mental faculties than kids.
