Streetfights

So tonight's announcement of the Roode Vs Storm Streetfight got me thinking, what is the difference between a Streetfight and a regular No Holds Barred, No DQ match??  I seem to remember an old NWA show saying that a Streetfight allowed you to wear anything you wanted, but nowadays there seems no distinction.

It used to be that you'd dress in your jeans and bring weapons, like Shawn did at Summerslam 2002.  That's pretty much died off in the PG era.  Although really, wrestlers wear tights because that's the best thing to wear for the sake of movement, so you'd think that wearing jeans would be counterproductive.

  1. Actually, Punk & Jericho brought the 'come-dressed-as-you-are' deal for their street fight at Extreme Rules.  That was a fun match.

  2. If you're going to be in a fight that can involve Singapore canes or sharp metal objects, bare legs and chest are not an advantage. You want to be as covered up as possible.

  3. I - like most of you - have WWE Classic on demand.  I saw that match just last night.  AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most underrated / best rivalry in wrestling has been Punk / Jericho.

  4. For me, as a viewer and potential buyer (if it's on pay-per-view), I would add that "street fight" sounds much more important than "no holds barred match." I don't know if it's just me, but a fight is different from a match, and that difference sets it apart and makes it extra special to me. My thinking is that, for example, "Roode and Storm hate each other so much that they can't be contained by normal match rules and sanctions, so they're just going to beat the hell out of each other until only one of them can walk away."

  5. I think "street fight" also used to imply falls count anywhere, although that hasn't been the case 100% of the time.

  6. No Holds Barred always sounds ridiculous, because really, what holds are actually barred? The only way something like that makes sense is if someone pulls out the piledriver, or one of those Japanese Death Suplexes.

  7. Roode-Storm is by far the most exciting bout on BFG for me, even though I'm enjoying the Aries-Hardy build and I'm sure the tag title match will be good.

There's just something about an old school blood feud.

  8. i watched the whole replay of the ppv last night!

    love classic on demand

  9. Punk and Jericho rocked jeans at Extreme Rules.

  10. "Street Fights" always disappoint me, because I expect some crazy Al Snow Outside the Arena nighttime clash in the snowfall like we got back in the attitude era. And then when the entrances begin and I see them walk to the ring, I remember, oh yeah, "street" means "three feet of padded matress around the ring."

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah F mats.  they should really try to legitimately hurt each other more.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I heard that in the Attitude era, the wrestlers were so tough that they literally assfucked each other to harden themselves for butt bumps during bulldogs and legdrops.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Way to miss the point. I'm not asking for piledrivers on cement, just for the occasional *literal* street fight.

  14. I remember all the controversy over Undertaker's "choke" hold. That's about the last time I remember Holds being Barred (temporarily).

  15. Threadjack:

So I found out that one of my professors for my next semester is named Scott Steiner. I can't wait to finally analyze and understand Prof. Steiner's theories on mathematics and the Big Dipper.

  16. Billy Graham had a funny bit about his Texas Death Match with Dusty Rhodes in that it was called as such only because it sounds better than say... a Vermont Death Match.

    It's all in the sound.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Like the Shamrock/Blackman Iron Circle?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think the "advantage" to street clothes was that you could wear stuff like say, steel toed cowboy boots that WOULD help you.

But I've always been a big proponent of specifically defining match rules.

  19.  It's NOOOO HOOOOLLDS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-AAA-RED! (NO HOLDS BARRED!)

    ReplyDelete
  20.  Anyone can survive a Vermont Death Match because both guys get access to public health care afterwards.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No, it's because JBL retired, not because of the PG Era.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh man that match!!  Holy god was it more boring than that should be.  I also believe, though it is hard to really tell, that one of the randoms watching the match was Kurt Angle a couple months before he debuted at SS.  I only recall this cause I went to a couple shows earlier that year where he had some dark matches and I thought I recognized him.

  23. You are sure to be mesmermized by the classes.

  24. I would get expelled. "Professor Steiner, are you going to teach us how to go behind, with the bump n grind, and show all the ladies why you're the big bad booty daddy?"

    ReplyDelete
  25. The only way a Vermont Death Match would be dangerous is if it involved vehicles. I swear to God the only qualification for Vermont drivers to get a license is to be able to correctly identify a picture of a car in less than 3 tries.

  26.  it's not a hold, but Sheamus's face kick to the face was barred for a bit?  is still barred? I'm not actually watching raw lately?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm jealous. I moved a couple of years ago and our new cable provider doesn't have Classics on Demand. I miss it - it beats shelling out $50 for PPVs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yeah, he's hanging out there.  I remember watching the tape a good 12 years ago and recognizing him from the back of his head...

... yeah, I was watching WAY too much.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, it takes a certain type of wrestler to pull off that kind of
match. Kane has always been good backstage, Al Snow and Mankind were
perfect. Crash Holly's 24/7 Title Reign had me glued to the set.
Remember when he was at some kind of kid's arcade? The wrestling wasn't
good, but man was it fun to watch.

  31. Edge vs. Shawn Michaels from Raw 2005 pretty much is the perfect example of the style. jeans, weapons, blood, carnage, it was classic.

  32. My god...TAKE THAT CLASS!

  33. Y'know...I was going to go there.  But easy joke is easy.

  35. Holy shit, I don't think I've seen that before. I'm sitting here just about in tears from laughing so hard.

  36. Ah, God bless PWI. I remember this article where they had a bunch of old NWA guys explaining the differences between street fights, come as you are matches, no holds barred and the like. That must have been 20 years ago and I can still remember Dick Murdoch talking about wearing boots with spurs on them for one match, but I can't remember how to do long division. Thanks, brain.

    ReplyDelete
  37.  The funniest part is how accurate the math is. He did that shit on the fly.

    ReplyDelete
  38. All I know is that Street Fights have to be won in the ring. They can go outside the ring, but the pin/submission whatevz has to be done in the ring. DQs count in a street fight as well.

the other two are the same thing. No holds barred/No DQ means exactly that. Any hold is legal.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well he did come from a highly educated university.

    ReplyDelete
  40. How could DQ's possibly count in a Street Fight??

    ReplyDelete
  41. Anyone know if the Reg Park mentioned in the new 30 for 30 short as Arnold's inspiration is the same one Bret talks about Owen pretending to be while prank calling Stu.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well, all i know is all the time when some heel grabs the ropes the ref counts.

Im figuring its cuz its gonna lead to a DQ whereas the other matches, the commentators specifically state how the heel can hold the ropes and what not.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This would actually be a good loophole for a heel to point out.  Like, he's forced into a No Holds Barred match by a face GM, then when his opponent hits him with a chair, the heel convinces the ref to call for a DQ since a chairshot isn't a "hold."  This would be great for a Sandow storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  44. IIRC he was a Math major.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hopefully you some sympy if you fail the class.

    ReplyDelete
  46. In Street Fights they can use their Super Combos. Punk's hadoken is the best in the business.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I've seen the refs do the same thing in No DQ matches, only to pull up at four and then begin checking on the guy in a hold.  It's usually done to illustrate to the audience the difference in the rules.
