This is actually the first time I've heard him cut a real wrestling promo, and it was pretty good, too. Hopefully he turns on Santino to give him SOMETHING to do on TV.
If there's one thing you can't fault Zack Ryder for, it's dedication. Large amount of "want" there, which is why I dig him a lot. Hopefully he gets something to do, because he still gets a pop and moves merch, but GODDAMMIT NO ONE GETS OVER WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OF VINCENT KENNEDY MCMAHON AND MY GENETIC JACKHAMMER!
Eh, I applaud the effort and spirit, but the promo came across as really forced and stilted, not like he was talking naturally. I think those are the best promos. They can get intense, they can get rolling, but they shouldn't come across like "I said this part, now I say that part, and then later I'll say this other part."
As much as I've liked Jericho over the years, that was always my biggest complaint about his promos. Even before he did the methodical "No Country for Old Men" style heel promo, he always spoke... with a way... that made you think... he. was. acting.
I like Ryder, and I think that was a pretty good promo. But I'm wondering if Ryder's reached the point in the WWE where he can't be turned heel. There's too many fans that have seen his videos and think they know him enough to think that a heel turn would come across as phony. He's not on the same level as Mick Foley, but I think they both are 'known' enough that the fans wouldn't boos them for almost any reason.
If he turned on Santino, I suspect most of the WWE fans would boo Santino, not Ryder.
I think Zack is learning from the CM Punk school of doing things. Do what you want and ask for an apology later. Zack wants to turn heel or tweener, so he's doing it himself. I doubt Creative told him to cut a heel promo. PLUS he can always say that it was a daydream.
For some reason, when Scott said 'Hopefully he turns on Santino to give him something to do...' I immediately thought 'Oh yeah, like that time Maven turned heel on Eugene.'
I like the content, and "Self Made Superstar" has a nice ring to it...but something about his delivery is the exact same as the current Zack Ryder. If he wants to turn heel, he can do it but needs to change his cadence a bit.
Always thought the character was a better heel. Long before I actually watched the videos and just kind of heard about them, I assumed he actually WAS heel.
huh, that was pretty good and if he did that on Raw, I think it would help him greatly.

ReplyDeleteNice bit about the brass ring.
It was OK.
ReplyDeleteTo quote one of the readers, "Ryder looks like a frat boy douche. so fuck that guy"

ReplyDeleteProbably not the desired reaction.
Still don't get the love for this guy. He's a goof.
ReplyDeleteThough I think he'd make a decent heel manager.

ReplyDeleteI've always said, you can ask for permission, or ask for forgiveness. Asking for forgiveness at least means the shit got done.

ReplyDeleteThe first Z! videos were done when he was a heel. And they were the best ones.
