Hey Scott,
Long time reader...keep up the fantastic work!
Don't know if you saw this match yet or not, but it is a serious Match of the Year Candidate hidden on Saturday Morning Slam.

Thanks Scott.

Santino was pretty great on commentary too, acting as the questioning kid watching the show. WWE is so insular now and it's refreshing to have a simple show with the goal of EXPLAINING this stuff to new viewers.
For some reason I DVR this show and it's a good show to have on as background noise while doing laundry or whatever. They have some great mini docs about theme music, title histories, and other stuff like that, and a match or two a week with Santino and Josh on commentary. I don't really understand why they cut away during the high impact moves. If parents don't want their kids watching wrestling....they shouldn't let their kids watch wrestling, plain and simple. A kid could imitate a basic hold and really hurt someone pretty badly too, no?
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, Bryan once blew off a hot feud in ROH by beating Homicide in a Steel Cage match after an airplane spin that lasted more than a minute.
ReplyDeleteI saw him do an airplane spin on the floor, while making a lap around the ring. It was like a rotating and orbiting. Super awesome stuff.
ReplyDeleteThat was a legitimately fun little match. Reminded me of the old British style; a combination of technical skill and comedy spots. And I know people will complain about the lack of high impact moves, but anything that gets wrestlers out of their usual routines has got to be a good thing.
ReplyDeleteThat was a fun little comedy match. Nowhere near MOTYC but exactly the kind of thing that makes wrestling fun for kids, which is the point. These two used to be tag partners in their indie days, and given some time on Main Event or another serious show they could put on something really great. Still, I like this kinda thing from guys who do it well. And I'd like to see that "armadillo" spot get worked into a serious match.
ReplyDeleteI probably watch SMS more often than RAW or SD these days. It's a pretty entertaining half-hour and would've been something I'd eat up like crazy back in the day when I was little.
ReplyDeleteIn a serious match, you'd just kick the crap out of the guy in the ball.
ReplyDeleteI'll come out and say it.....totally felt like a little kid watching that, and I mean that in the best way possible.
ReplyDeleteOr just stand on the apron or somewhere else out of the way until he stopped.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. First time I watched it when zanadude posted the link in my ROH review I thought it was one of the stupidest things I ever saw, watched it again and thought "Hey, that was kind of funny..." Just watched it a third time and it's one of the most entertaining 4 minute matches I've ever seen, even if it was all of 5 moves. I should check out this SMS show, it seems that they're putting on fun matches just for the sake of putting on fun matches, and that's something that's been missing from wrestling as a whole these days. And I bow to the awesomeness of Daniel Bryan, usually making guys work WWE style cuts them off at the knees, but he's better in this role than he ever was. Though I'll say this again: those tag title belts are AWFUL.
ReplyDeleteBTW, love the profile pic.
Does not surprise me in the slightest that D-Bry would work in a Johnny Saint spot. Saint is a cult hero for a lot of the old ROH crew.
ReplyDeleteCute little match given the limitations of the time slot, but just comedy, not MOTY by any means.
ReplyDeleteReally? You guys aren't kidding? Elgin is out here having matches of the year and we're trumpeting this?
ReplyDeleteI love the airplane spin. I remember at a PWG show I went to, Bryan got James Gibson on his shoulders and my friend yelled out, "30 times!" The crowd started counting out loud after each rotation. It was actually a lot of fun live and is something I could see getting over.
ReplyDeleteI admit it's no Melina vs Alicia Fox, but it was still pretty damned good.
ReplyDeleteErrr match of the year?? Hmmm.. I wonder if the dude who posted this just said it in an attempt to get some attention? Whilst a fun comedy match I'd be worried by the quality of the rest of the MOTY candidates if this was setting the standard.
ReplyDeleteThis was AWESOME. Whoever said "they felt like a kid again" nailed it.
ReplyDeleteElgin Who? Just saying is all.
ReplyDeleteIs Elgin Who Doctor Who's cousin or something?
ReplyDeleteI could see some wrestlers actually wanting to do this show. It's safer and obviously more fun.
ReplyDeleteSaturday Morning Slam is a super fun show. Just started DVRing it the week of that match and have enjoyed greatly as background noise while working on the computer. And I agree with Scott that Santino is great in his role as the inquisitive color man. And the vignettes with the nods to history are great fun for a 20 plus year fan like myself.
