The SmarK RAW Rant – 10.15.12

Live from Nashville, TN

Your hosts are Jim Ross and Michael Cole

Big Show starts us out, complaining about the debate and Sheamus in general. So tonight, he’s going to erase the spectre of his previous 45 second loss to Daniel Bryan by beating him tonight. We cut to the back, where the tag champs happen to be watching, and AJ forces him to go out. Sadly, Kane does not have his back. Why can’t those crazy kids just get along?

Big Show v. Daniel Bryan

Bryan stops to tear up a little kid’s goat face mask at ringside, so hopefully they won’t get sued over THAT. Show pounds on Bryan and tosses him by the beard right out of the ring, and we take a break. I’m really beginning to find it obnoxious when they take commercial breaks 30 seconds into a match instead of waiting for a more organic point later on. We return with Show holding a bearhug until Bryan escapes. Bryan dropkicks the knee and the crowd goes APESHIT for him as makes the comeback with kicks in a great sequence and gets two. Corner dropkicks, but he walks into a chokeslam at 7:30, most of which was during the commercial break. Still fun. ** Why are they taking the hottest act in the company and beating him on TV like that, though? Kane saves Bryan from a knockout punch, so he kinda has Bryan’s back.

Paul Heyman introduces CM Punk, who is ready to announce his opponent for Hell In A Cell. He notes that if anyone, including fans, physically disrespect him, he’ll put them down. Well he certainly showed that. And Vince disrespected him, so Punk beat him up so badly that he’ll never compete in the ring again. Whew. So he goes over the choices for his opponent: The one-armed man, or the next big monster. The choice seems obvious, but fans are DISRESPECTING him, so he decides to think it over and reveal his answer later, in a higher-rated quarter hour no doubt. This brings out Vince (is it halftime in the football game or something?) and now there will be a contract signing later tonight where Vince will announce his opponent instead. What a fucking waste of time this was. Just a totally cynical ratings grab on their part.

Alberto Del Rio v. Brodus Clay

Clay is now sans entrance, so this probably won’t last long. Clay puts ADR on the floor with a shoulder tackle, but Del Rio goes to the arm and gets two. Brodus misses a charge and Del Rio finishes with the armbar at 2:00. ½*

Meanwhile, Punk wants another fight with Vince McMahon.

Santino & Zack Ryder v. The Primetime Players

We’re joined in progress because they must be running short on time AGAIN. Apparently Zack and Santino are “Team Co-Bro”, because all teams must have “team” in their name. We’re joined with Titus holding a chinlock on Santino, but Zack gets the hot tag and hits the Broski boot for two. Titus finishes with the powerbomb at 1:33, however. Fine for a 90 second match, I guess. * Heath Slater’s newly named 3 Man Band runs out for the beatdown afterwards, as they are indeed now dressed like Poison after last week’s comment from JBL.

Dolph Ziggler is out to challenge CM Punk for the PPV because Ryback doesn’t deserve the shot, and David Otunga also joins him to complain. So AJ brings out Ryback for a handicap match.

Ryback v. Dolph Ziggler & David Otunga

Ryback no-sells a dropkick and hits Ziggler with the clothesline, and Dolph tags out to Otunga. Ryback hits him with a jawbreaker drop, prompting Ziggler to walk out on the match. Ryback finishes Otunga with the Shellshock at 1:45. So I guess it’s Ryback v. Ziggler at the PPV when Cena gets the shot tonight.

Meanwhile, Paul Heyman sucks up to Vince and pitches the rematch, but Vince makes the match against Heyman instead.

Meanwhile, Matt Striker goes to AJ, looking for an apology from Kane, but he gets a match with Kane instead. There is some wantonly irresponsible matchmaking going on tonight.

Antonio Cesaro v. Justin Gabriel

Cesaro gets a vicious clothesline and double stomp, then puts Gabriel on the top and hits a kneelift and another double stomp. The crowd starts a USA chant for some good old fashioned xenophobic heat, and Cesaro holds a waistlock on the ground. They slug it out and Gabriel fights back with an inverted DDT and 450 splash, but it only gets two. Gabriel springboards at him, but lands on the UPPERCUT OF DOOM and the Neutralizer finishes at 3:44. I think Gabriel actually got too much offense – Cesaro is the future and he should have just destroyed him hardcore. **

Matt Striker v. Kane

Wonder if the ratings CAN get to 2.4 or lower? Because they’re sure trying. Striker asks again for an apology, noting that no one wants to see mindless carnage. The crowd chants “mindless carnage”, thus giving last night’s TNA crowd a run for their money. This has been a really great crowd for a pretty crappy show. Kane and Striker hug it out, but Kane gets carried away and chokeslams him at 1:55. No actual match here.

Miz brings out Kofi Kingston for his interview segment. Miz again reminds us all that he main evented Wrestlemania and Kofi is a B-lister, so Kofi challenges him to a match tonight. Miz points out that all the little kids go “Yay, Kofi”, but no one actually cares about him. I love shoot comments that aren’t supposed to be shoot comments.

Sheamus v. Wade Barrett

Wade slugs away in the corner and works on the arm, but Sheamus hits him with a short clothesline and follows with the forearms on the apron. Barrett fights out of it and stomps Sheamus down. Pumphandle slam gets two. Barrett hits the chinlock, but Sheamus fights out with elbows and hits the Regal roll. Barrett bails and Sheamus follows with a shoulderblock off the apron, but now Big Show interrupts like last week. And we take a break while everyone stands around watching him come out. Back with Barrett in control, but Sheamus uses CLUBBING FOREARMS to put Barrett on the floor, and back in Barrett kicks him off the apron in retaliation. Barrett pounds away and gets two, then goes to a rear chinlock. Sheamus escapes with the backbreaker as Michael Cole promises yet ANOTHER recap of the Vince-Punk segment after this match. Yeah, that’ll make stay tuned in. Sheamus comes back with the forearms on the apron, and a suplex into the ring gets two. Barrett comes back with a clothesline out of the corner and he goes up with a flying elbow for two. Sheamus escapes the Wasteland, but walks into the Bossman slam and that gets two for Barrett. Both guys are down and Sheamus misses a charge, but goes up and misses the shoulderblock. Cloverleaf, but Big Show distracts him and pulls him out of the ring to draw a DQ at 16:45. Match was going well before the bullshit finish. Not as hard-hitting as last week, but I guess they had extra time to fill now. ***

Meanwhile, John Cena advises Vince that he’s ready to go if he’s picked.

Divas title: Eve v. Layla

Shoving match to start and Eve works on a headlock. JR notes that Eve and Kaitlyn are very talented “in different ways” inside the ring. That’s a very generous assessment of Kaitlyn’s talents. Eve tosses Layla and gets two back in the ring. Low kick gets two. Eve figure-fours the head in a cool submission attempt that ends up going way too long, but Layla makes the ropes. Are they just trying to burn up time now? Layla comes back with a high kick for two and they botch a bodypress spot before Layla manages to hit it for two. Layla goes up, so Eve trips her and pins her to retain at 4:44. Layla had her foot on the ropes, but no one cares. *1/2

Meanwhile, Kane and Daniel work things out backstage and argue about how funny the Big Show chokeslam was. So Bryan tells Kane to face Show next week.

Meanwhile, Vince interviews Ryback.

The Rhodes Scholars v. Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara

No, wait, because after promising this match for the whole show, Cole now clarifies that Rey Mysterio is not here because of illness, and thus the match will take place next week instead. What the FUCK? There’s gotta be more to that one. I mean, how ill could he be that he couldn’t stand on the apron for a couple of minutes?

Meanwhile, the 3MB gets kicked out of a bar.

The Rhodes Scholars v. Primo & Epico

The Colons attack Sandow and chase him out of the ring. Back in, Primo gets a dropkick on Rhodes for two, and slingshots into the ring with a senton for two. I think they’ve finally succeeded in burning out this awesome crowd, because they’ve been dead silent since the women’s match. Sandow comes in with a chinlock and the heels cut off the ring and work Primo over in pretty dull fashion. Primo gets the heat forever and makes the hot tag to Epico, who hits Sandow with rolling backdrop suplexes. Blind charge hits Sandow’s elbow, and the neckbreaker (“The Terminus”) finishes at 7:31. Zzzzz. *

The Miz v. Kofi Kingston

Kofi attacks in the corner to start and they brawl on the floor, where Kofi gets a clothesline. Back in, Kofi with a dropkick, but Miz drops him on the top turnbuckle and puts him down with a clothesline. Corner clothesline and Miz goes up with a double axehandle for two. Kofi with a sunset flip for two. Neckbreaker gets two. Miz hits the chinlock, but Kofi makes the comeback and they trip over their own feet while fighting for the finisher, which leads to Kofi getting the wacky kick out of nowhere at 5:15. Probably doesn’t bode well for his chances on the Main Event. Another dull match in a series of them tonight. *1/2

Main event contract signing:

Wait, wasn’t there supposed to be a Vince-Heyman deal, or was that just Vince being a jerk and they didn’t intend to follow up on it? Anyway, Vince brings out Punk and Heyman, Cena and Ryback, and hopefully they wrap this up quickly because this has been the most boring fucking show since the original NXT. Everything since Sheamus-Barrett has literally been putting me to sleep. Vince is about to announce his decision, but Cena interrupts and gives us up his shot to THE RYBACK. In the Cell. That’s gonna be quite the trainwreck. Ryback signs the contract and then lays out Punk with the Shellshock. Either they’re gonna need an epic way to weasel out of this one at the PPV, or else Ryback is gonna have to squash him and win the belt.

The Pulse

What a weirdly paced show, as they rushed through the first 90 minutes and then everything slowed to a crawl for the rest. As usual, I was just begging for it to end by third hour, and the live crowd seemed to feel the same way.

Comments

  1. They're in a weird position with Ryback. Jobbing him even semi clean would kill him, but are they really going to give him the belt already and end Punks reign, especially when Punk is going to have to win it back to face Rock at the Rumble? And it's in a Cell, so no weaseling out with a DQ or countout. Only way to have Punk retain but protect Ryback is with something BIG I think, like Lesnar returning and destroying Ryback as he's about to win.

    ReplyDelete
  2. no mention of the SICK kick busting open miz? that was fucking BRUTAL.

    thoroughly enjoyed raw tonight, myself.

    ReplyDelete
  3. What, you don't think that Rock vs Ryback is doable?

    ReplyDelete
  4. "Either they’re gonna need an epic way to weasel out of this one at the PPV"

Five words: Yokozuna. Undertaker. Royal Rumble 1994. And it makes sense in a way, with every midcard heel Ryback ever squashed storming the cage, Ryback fighting them all off at once, and Punk jumping Ryback from behind for the steal (and even then it'll take a gimmicked foreign object of some kind).

    ReplyDelete
  5. I've totally given up on watching this show. The rant, while enjoyably written, just confirms I'm not missing anything.

    ReplyDelete
  6.  this. ryback losing to punk would fuck up his momentum, but losing to the rock would be fine. then sets up rock/punk at mania.

    i like that brock/ryback idea.

    ReplyDelete
  7.  i danno, sheamus/barret was good, miz/kofi is worth checking out for that sick finish. hopefully miz is fine after that. and ryback's sudden main event push is fun.

most importantly, nothing on the show was downright bad or embarrassing. that's more than i can say for other wrestling shows this week.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I only saw the last hour (yay me?) but Scott you definitely missed that VICIOUS kick by Kofi.  Almost HBK/Shelton Benjamin Sweet Chin Music-esque in that it landed absolutely perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Has it ever occurred to you that maybe The Miz is fine, and that he's just AWESOME at selling?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hate to say it, but I'm kind of hoping for Raw to suck even harder, Angry Scott is awesome. It can't suck too hard though, or he'll just quit on it altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  11.  how about the fact that he got fucking NAILED with a kick in the face with no hand protection and when the trainer lifted the towel from his head it was all bloody? is miz really THAT good of a seller? really? really? REALLY?

    ReplyDelete
  12. miz kick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9ajggctP2o

    ReplyDelete
  13. This should once and for all dispel the myth that Kofi can't break through the glass ceiling.  All he needs is Sin Cara's trampoline and a Trouble in Paradise kick.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So you rag on people who are hostile towards TNA, then go out and say you are rooting for Raw to fail?

    Alright then.

    ReplyDelete
  15. He was well enough to take a Pedigree from Triple H during the commercial break.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree on Punk beating Ryback fucking up his momentum and I agree that Rock beating Ryback wouldn't, but unless we were swerved and the WM plan is Rock VS Punk, I think the money is in Rock ending Punks year long title reign at the Rumble. And if Ryback actually stays this over, I'm not sure putting him up against THE ROCK is a great way to sustain his heat as a monster face.

    ReplyDelete
  17. That would be strangely fascinating.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah he is a good seller....doesn't take away from the fact that he got DESTROYED by a kick.  I've seen lesser bumps result in serious injuries, so kudos to Miz for actually taking that and surviving...but that kick should probably make the permanent montage.

    ReplyDelete
  19. There is NO WAY IN HELL that they will ever do Ryback vs Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  20. When did I ever rag on people who are hostile towards TNA? After last night I'm more hostile towards TNA than any man alive. I've been saying that if Hardy wins TNA can fuck off and die for the past month. And besides, it was just a joke, chill out man.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Alright then.  Sorry for lumping you in with the haters.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What's the over/under on Rey Mysterio becoming the first wrestler to rack up a third Wellness Violation?

    ReplyDelete
  23. You jinxed it! In the words of Vince McMahon, "YOU'RE FIRED!"

And in the words of Cranky Vince, "FUCK YOU!"

    ReplyDelete
  24. What do you call a Water/Poison-type Kevin Nash?

    BIG TENTA COOL!

    --

Boring-ass episode. I actually flipped to "Avatar: The Last Airbender" for a while (one of my favorite shows ever) and even that show's worst episode ("The Great Divide"), which was on at the same time, was infinitely more entertaining. This isn't a train wreck, since those would be interesting to look at. This is a three-hour drive through barren plains. Nothing to see, folks, nothing to see.

Except for AJ's ass in slacks. GOD DAMN!

    ReplyDelete
  25. The problem is, Scott isn't even angry.  He's BORED!  Just like the rest of us!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, it felt like we were headed towards Brock costing Cena the HiaC match to set up Cena/HHH vs. Paul Heyman Guys, but that's obviously all out the window now.

    ReplyDelete
  27. There is no way in hell that ROCK will ever do Ryback vs Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It's a fresh match up!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Depends on how much Randy gives a fuck about his job.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's OK. I want Raw to be great (and go back to 2 hours), and with TNA no longer existing as far as I'm concerned I need something new to fill my wrestling fix. I love ROH, but 1 hour of wrestling a week isn't enough. I can't handle 3 hours of this shit though, so I'll bite the bullet and check out the Main Event show you've been pimping so hard. If it doesn't totally suck ass I'll even review it for the blog, as long as no one else hasn't already claimed it. I'm setting my DVR to record it right now.

    ReplyDelete
  31.  You're on fire tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Miz will be healed up just enough to defend his Intercontinental Championship against Kofi on WWE Main Event™, remember to catch it this Wednesday Night at 8pm/7pm central only on Ion Television.

(Figured Zanadude would like that shameless plug, although it's admittedly not quite on the level of Ben Affleck's 2003 Howard Stern appearence where he turned a question about his relationship with J-Lo into a cheap plug for his flop "Paycheck".)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I got even money on Orton, maybe 3-1 on Rey Rey.

    ReplyDelete
  34. just a quick question, if Aries wins the belt back from Hardy within the next 3 months or so will you forgive TNA, just honest curiosity

    ReplyDelete
  35. Cena will cost Ryback the belt through blotched interference where they try and establish that Ryback can't beat Punk on his own and needs Cena's help only for Punk to turn out a miracle and escape with the belt. At which point, Ryback will go evil and attack Cena while everyone makes Ryback look like the villain and Cena saint who's bullshit did not cost Ryback the title...

    ReplyDelete
  36.  So is Rock vs Ryder, doesn't make it a good idea

    ReplyDelete
  37. I suppose I should have phrased that more clearly.  What's the odds that Rey missing tonight's show was Wellness Violation related?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I do believe Vince is the 1st person ever to have his music altered during the course of the show.

His music @ the start was the traditional "No Chance in Hell," and at the end instead of the sweeping sound intro, it had the "grand" bit from the WWE signature.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Was Ryback about to cry there at the end? Also thought for a moment Vince was going to announce a triple threat.

Lots of weird verbal slip-ups this evening, like Punk saying "screw looses" and Justin Roberts announcing "Santonio Cesaro."

    ReplyDelete
  40. Miz got tagged for real, yo, with Trouble in Paradise.  That was nasty.

Also, I had totally forgotten that match had been signed earlier in the show.

    ReplyDelete
  41. "The C word", for AJ.  Some kid is gonna ask the wrong person what "the C word" is.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I always value that more than the typical "impants = hot" mindset. That's a big reason why I thought Stacy and Molly were head and shoulders above someone like Torrie.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Low. If it was Wellness, they wouldn't have said they were pushing it to next week and probably would've found a replacement to take Rey's spot.

    ReplyDelete
  44.  I think it'd be quite fun, actually. Rock can do his making fun of Ryback, like he does with everyone, and Ryback can finally be a guy who doesn't take his shit and just beats the fuck out of him. It would turn him heel, but it would be fascinating and put Ryback over.

    ReplyDelete
  45. as they are indeed now dressed like Poison after last week’s comment from JBL

I loved when the girls in the audience would go crazy for CC's turban.

    ReplyDelete
  46. What a long show to suffer through.  I wanted to tap out by the 1:45 mark of the show.  The Barrett-Sheamus match was pretty cool, though.

Like Scott, I have no idea why the hottest act they have (Bryan) is jobbed out.  That set the tone for me. There looked like there were hundreds of signs in the crowd tonight relating to Bryan and Kane.  Yes, No, Goatface, "I am the tag team champions" were all signs in the crowd--and just multiply them by 30-50 each.  Then, add the dozens of visible Yes and No shirts (and the dozens or hundreds that weren't visible).  How do you not devote more TV time and writers' efforts into this character that everyone seems to enjoy?  His interactions with Kane, AJ, and Shelby have been amazing the last two months in addition to the rest of the year where he was amazing being a jerk and still catching on with the fans.

More questions... why does Bryan have to job to Big Show, who has already been pushed to the moon and back?  Why does Clay have to tap out to Del Rio, who has also been pushed heavily for two years?  Why does Ziggler have to puss out to Ryback, who--sensing a pattern here--has already been pushed to the moon? Why does Barrett have to be knocked out by Sheamus, who--you guessed it--has been pushed nonstop?  Top talents were buried on this show.

Most of the progression of the mid-card the last three weeks was completely ignored this week.  Whether people realize it or not, this roster is deep in terms of personality and ability, and most of them were being sacrificed on the altars of the privileged few.

The Kane segment was funny, Punk was engaging on the mic, Sheamus-Barrett was good until the BS finish, and the Kofi segments were also very good.  That's about it...and now Kofi's push may end here after knocking Miz's head off with that brutal knockout kick. Oy.

edit: Claudio/Cesaro's awesomeness deserves a mention, too

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gotta love how JR talked about Kofi getting yelled at with "Stupid! Stupid!" in the lead up to his match with Orton at MSG.

...OK, he didn't, but all of us were thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. You don't give bad news outright;  you stall for buffer time to figure out the best way to deliver it.  Like Michael Cole and WWE did during the Jerry Lawler heart attack incident.

A similar thing happened with Jeff Hardy last year, and TNA trotted him out to do the job, an act that was panned by everybody.  It's always better to stall than to scramble and do something rash at the spur of the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Since Rock would have to do a lot of solo stuff to overcome Ryback's lack of promo skills, we'd surely get another Rock Concert out of the deal.  Probably some bonus interaction with Heath Slater too!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yeah.  AJ, Layla, and maybe Eve do it for me...and that's about it.  There's some real cuties down in NXT, though.  Throughout the years, I'd probably give Trish that "beautiful" distinction as well, but that's just my opinion.  I miss Trish.  I miss Stacey.  I miss Maryse.  I miss Maria.

    ReplyDelete
  51. So in their little self-serving PR bits, Stephanie said she's a mother of three.

    When the hell was #3?

    ReplyDelete
  52. No, no, it was clearly "THIS IS AUCKLAND!", trying to mess with R-Truth.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Next 3 months? No. Next PPV? I'll consider it, but we're talking about a promotion that has fucked up pretty much every hot angle they've had from day one. Sorry, but I've just been burned too many times, and Hardy's win last night was the proverbial straw that broke the back. I mean, look at the booking last night, months of buildup for the A&8 angle, and the big reveal is D-Von Dudley? 10 points for the SWERVE~!, minus a million points for plain stupidity, though if it leads to a Devon main event push I'm willing to let it go. But booking the Roode/Storm match, the feud that has been carrying the company for the past year, as the 3rd match on the biggest PPV of the year just says it all.

Seriously though, Aries (or anyone else) can win the title from Hardy on Impact and I still won't be convinced. Hardy is like a metaphor for TNA, the promotion is like the addict friend/relative a lot of us have (something I have loads of experience with, though that said person is doing really well, thanks to him realizing that the trashy skanks out there are nothing but trouble), you see them doing better but know in the back of your mind that's it's only temporary and they're going to fuck up again and you're right back where you started. That's TNA in a nutshell, you see great things but you know you can't trust them.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ask and you shall receive.

    ReplyDelete
  55.  Don't you mean BEST stable ever?

    ReplyDelete
  56.  Jobbing does equal getting jobbed, though.  Ultimately, you have some captivating characters made to look weak in order to promote ALREADY intriguing title matches and a throwaway Orton-Del Rio match.  It was unnecessary, in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Shame, Bored Scott isn't too good. Shit, Bored Anyone isn't very good in any situation, look at the Yankees...

    ReplyDelete
  58.  I heard he took an AA in the dark match too.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It's also possible, I would think, that one or two more new "Heyman's Guys" could do the same thing and get a stable going that way?

    ReplyDelete
  60. It's a fresh match up!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Recently?  I mean, she's been off TV for a while.

EDIT: And aren't PR bits by definition self-serving?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Molly wasn't smokin' or hot, but she was really cute, and that does it for me.

    ReplyDelete
  63. So, WWE is now pulling multiple bait and switches on the same show to increase their ratings?  It looks like Ryback's winning the title.

Anybody want to predict how low Raw will go next week when they're going head-to-head with the final debate and football (Bears VS Lions) and maybe game 7 of the NLCS?  Last week's show did a 2.8 (actually 2.78) by the way and this week's show will almost certainly be the 7th consecutive show to do below a 3 (actually below a 2.90).  How long will it be until Raw falls below a 2.0?  Is that what it will take for WWE to pull the plug on the 3 hour debacle?

Actually, forget all of that.  Ryback's going to turn things around because he only wrestles squash matches and he's so original that fans chant "Goldberg" every time he's in the ring.  Everybody knows that a guy that looks like he's on roids always draws because wrestling fans care about physique, not mic skills or workrate.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I agree, tried watching it online but even at 2 solid hours(minus commercials) it does seem really long not to be a PPV. I think my favorite guy right now is Claudio. He's just got it ALL. Can we get Cesaro/Daniel Bryan on 'The Main Event' in a 30 minute match please?

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm happy for the mere fact that I don't have to sit through Punk and Cena for the third straight PPV. At least it's different and it has us guessing how they will handle this.

Going to be interesting to see where this goes. I really hope they don't botch this completely........because it could start them on a solid run until the Rumble.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't care. I'm a workrate-first guy to the core, but if they do massively shitty booking up and down the card then fuck 'em. Hell, the backyard wresting kids 2 blocks over from my house can hit **** on a regular basis just by imitating Punk and Bryan (the one kid is amazing though, he can hit a standing double 450, he calls it the 900 in tribute to Tony Hawk, if he keeps with it he'll be NJPW Jr champ in 2018 or so, and he actually understands how to to sell), but I won't pay to see that either.

BTW, I know you're just busting my balls, but I'm going to get in as much hate for BFG as possible while I still can.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Uh...I like seeing new shit too.  But Punk/Cena is guaranteed 4 stars.

Ryback is about to end Punk's streak...of good PPV matches.

    ReplyDelete
  68.  The X Factor and the No Limit Soldiers would like a word with you.

    ReplyDelete
  69.  It's not that hard to understand.

    Cena interferes
    Cena fucks up, Punk wins
    RYBACK ANGRY AT CENA
    RYBACK EVIL

    ReplyDelete
  70. Perhaps she was referring to HHH as #3

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yes, plus with his 3rd test being a contract termination- I'm sure if Wellness was the case, he'd request a second sample before they actually shitcan him

    ReplyDelete
  72. If Punk can't carry Ryback to a 4 star match, then he has no business being WWE champion.

    ReplyDelete
  73. It's official...Rey Mysterio is a wuss.

    http://www.wwe.com/videos/the-prime-time-players-talk-about-rey-mysterio-being-sick-wwecom-exclusive-oct-1-26060364

    ReplyDelete
  74. Indeed- both were legit beautiful girls, whereas a lot of the Fitness Model + Implants Crowd just wore tons of makeup. Granted, I appreciate both types, but Molly's my favourite overall ever.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Uh, actually, no. They didn't just trot Mr. Perfect out there to get destroyed by Hogan, nor did DiBiase just casually lose.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Trish actually grew more hot with time- she looks better as a natural brunette with a tight Yoga body more than her "Giant bubble boobs and bleach-blonde hair" look. And she also got to reveal that she was legitimately pretty after hiding behind super-tans and makeup for so long, too.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sorry, I still prefer the "Giant bubble boobs and bleach-blonde hair" look.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'll see what I can do.

Would 30 minutes be enough? Over half the match would be taken up by the Airplane Spin and Giant Swing.

    ReplyDelete
  79. are you serious, bro?

    ReplyDelete
  80. actually they did. which pretty much killed Mr. Perfect as a main event threat - which he could have easily been in 1990.

so you are both wrong AND right.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Yes.  Ryback brings something totally different to the table, so workrate would not be such a high requirement for him.  But Punk's whole shtick is "Best In The World".  So he's gotta be like Ric Flair...no, he has to be better than Ric Flair, and go out there and have four star matches with a broomstick.  Or he has no business being WWE champion.

    ReplyDelete
  82. lol you did the "correctal Khloe thing" with the "uh actually"

    hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  83. You did it too.

    ReplyDelete
  84. This guy spanks to it.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Modifying your catchphrase is my catchphrase!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Please EMBRACE THE HATE for BFG.

  87. Zanadude, meet the Blog of Doom's Glass ceiling.

    Glass ceiling, Zanadude.

Get to know each other... WELL.

    ReplyDelete
  88.  And I love how he talked about how being in Hell in the Cell defines greatness and all of the great champions like Austin and Rock who have a combined 0 title defenses inside of a Hell in the Cell match.

    ReplyDelete
  89.  I have thought about something similar, but I would turn Cena heel to help Punk, because he finally got respect for Punk going in the Ring with Ryback. Or so...

    ReplyDelete
  90. Now I need to find the Blog of Doom's Kofi Kingston to help me blast through this Glass Ceiling...

    ReplyDelete
  91. ZIGGLER?  The guy who hasn't won a match in months?  He's far from getting jobbed?

Man, I'd hate to see the burial job someone would have to suffer to get jobbed out in your universe.

    ReplyDelete
  92. YES indeed to Molly. She made it easy to cheer against Lita and Trish, when I wasn't into either of them. And her and Gail Kim for that short run... absolutely good.

    ReplyDelete
  93. ... and then get RKOed right back through it on the way down.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Not to beat a dead horse, but I still feel like the length of Raw (plus the existence of too much WWE content outside of Raw) is an even bigger problem than the booking right now, because honestly the booking since Raw 1000 continues to be pretty good.

Again, look at the sheer amount of what basically amount to squashes:
    - Cesaro over Gabriel
    - PTPers over CoBro
    - ADR over Brodus
    - Kane over Striker
    - Ryback over Otunga
    - Rhodes Scholars over Colons
    - Divas match taht nobody will ever care about

The booking decisions in every match was the right one, and the matches themselves were perfectly acceptable. There are just TOO many of them.

Now let's imagine a 2-hour version of Raw using the same content and booking decisions from last night, but less stuff (including no Divas filler):

    - 9pm: Bryan vs Show (really fun match, Bryan looked great and had the crowd going apeshit for everything he did)
    - Cesaro over Gabriel
    - Ryback over Otunga
    - 10pm match: Sheamus vs Barrett (this was a REALLY good match)
    - Kofi on MizTV (same segment, end with the Kofi kick. No need for that match)
    - Pick one of the discarded squashes. Let's go with Kane- Striker.
    - Quick shot of the 3MB singing in the bar, leading into...
    - Main event interview segment. Condense all the Punk and Vince stuff to the end instead of splitting it up the way they did. Punk does his schtick, wavers on the decision, so Vince brings out The Ryback for the same ending we got last night.

Is that the hottest Raw ever? Of course not. But that content in a 2-hour format would be infinitely more enjoyable, and I think the good stuff (and the good booking) would stand out way more.

  95. At first I thought you were being a dick, but you're actually absolutely correct. If Punk's whole thing is gonna be calling himself "best in the world," then he's gotta prove it by carrying lugs to great matches and making guys look better than they have any right to look.

Flair has done it countless times, Jericho has done it, HBK has done it, Bret has done it, even Cena & HHH have carried frickin' Khali to acceptable matches and Ryback is much better than Khali.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Agree entirely. Miz got CLOBBERED with that shot (as the repeated replays and extra-special slo-mo replay conveyed). I love how concussion conscious WWE is, yet when there's a doink like Kofi's kick, they gleefully replay it OVER and OVER and OVER.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I get through a couple of paragraphs and start skipping parts of the review that don't look interesting. I don't know how anyone can sit through three hours of this.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yeah, but "Best in the World" is his character's saying, as in he thinks he's the best wrestler in the world because he can beat everyone, not because he can have entertaining fake fights with them. It's like how Shawn Michaels was the greatest performer in Wrestlemania history because he had entertaining losses. But you're right, if he's going to be the champion he's going to have to carry some shitty guys to decent matches.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Who could forget that time Mr. Perfect ate a pin from Earthquake?

    ReplyDelete
  100. That's the funny thing with WWE - they completely ignore the sport aspect of wrestling to focus on the entertainment, then expect you to be impressed with someone because of their physical attributes.

    ReplyDelete
  101. They adopted Sheamus a couple of years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  102. but if he looks like crap leading up to the cash-in, even if he wins what does it matter? especially if it's the usual cheap MITB cash-in win.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Totally agree on Trish, Maria and Maryse, three of the hottest ever. Of the current crop the only hot ones are AJ, Eve and Paige from NXT. I don't see Layla as hot, I think she is one of the least attractive women in the company since McCool or Jazz.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I actually like that idea.

    ReplyDelete
  105. It's not about workrate... it's about being carryable... which Ryback isn't. He hasn't even shown that he can go 5 minutes yet.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I didn't catch Raw. I was too busy watching a 3 hour episode of Antiques Roadshow on PBS. They were discussing antique furniture and the use of sanding.

    Raw can't compete with that.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Then what was Bradshaw and Triple H's excuse?

    ReplyDelete
  108. It also doesn't do the guys doing that any favors.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Los Boricuas, The Truth Commission, and the Oddities would also like a word.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Lol wut?

Ryback has never, ever had a main-event match. he's never been in a match that's lasted over 5 minutes. When DDP gave Goldberg 4 stars, Bill had at least been in the main-event for a while. Ryback is completely untested, we have no idea if he can handle the pressure, no idea if he can do anything in a cage match.

Punk is the best in the world, but to expect anything over 3 stars is ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Thanks for my new tagline!

At first you think I'm being a dick, but I'm actually absolutely correct.

    ReplyDelete
  112. They wouldn't do that because Rock is a part timer who needs someone he can trust to take it easy on him, and Ryback isn't capable of that.

    ReplyDelete
  113. It seems to be too soon for Ryback, in my opinion. Couldn't they have put the IC Belt on him for a while first? It's not like Miz is doing anything worthwhile with it right now.

    ReplyDelete
  114. DVR is really the only way to enjoy the three hour RAW shows. Its way too long.

    ReplyDelete
  115. But wouldn't he then have to deliver a promo from beyond the grave?  Ryback only has four proven words in his vocabulary.

    "Punk...me...feed....Punk...feed...MORE!"

    ReplyDelete
  116. You know, I said somewhere a week or two back that Bryan was the best guy to push as the next new star, because he hasn't been ruined by the bullshit 50/50 booking that WWE loves to do with everyone not named Cena (or Punk, for the time being anyway). They must have heard me, seems like they're starting to job him. Can't let anyone get as close to as over as Cena is, damn it!

    ReplyDelete
  117. Gotta love how JR said that Punk needs to defend the title in HiaC against someone like an Austin.  You know, do something he's never done before...

...like say a few years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I thought it would have been funny if backstage, Bryan was all upset not b/c of Kane laughing at him, but b/c Kane was hugging another person.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Any wrestler you throw at me, I'd win the argument by saying "Tell me you wouldn't tune in to watch five weeks of Rock/{wrestler} promos leading up to the Royal Rumble!"

IT DOESN'T MATTER who the champ is at Royal Rumble!  He'll be fighting The Rock!

    ReplyDelete
  120.  One loss does not equal getting jobbed. Taking a finisher does not equal getting jobbed. Pussing out does not equal getting jobbed.

    ReplyDelete
  121.  Brodus Clay is getting jobbed, yes. Bryan? Barrett? Ziggler? Far from it.

I'm sure DiBiase Sr. and Mr. Perfect were losing matches to higher profiles wrestlers all the time, but they kept their heat. Same with those three.

    ReplyDelete
  122. BUT THE WRESTLING WAS GOOD!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  123. I'm fearing something similar to Yokozuna dropping the belt to Hogan after wrestling Bret Hart.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Having the briefcase doesn't mean shit.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Dino Bravo certainly wouldn't be fresh.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I disagree. I'm definitely not saying it WILL happen, but the idea would be to use a surprise appearance to build to a Survivor Series match. If you promote it you lose the surprise and thus some of the interest.

Definitely not to say it WILL happen, but I also think its at least a possibility. It would probably help Raw the next night get a better rating while increasing interest in some kind of SS match (Brock/Ryback or a tag match or this being spun into a different match).

    ReplyDelete
  127. Tell me you wouldn't tune in to watch five weeks of Rock/Ryback promos leading up to Royal Rumble!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Thanks for the assist.  Pimpin' ain't easy!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Miz getting planted with the Trouble in Paradise was the single most awesome thing last night lol I can't stop watching it
