Don Frye vs Yoshihiro Takayama (Pride) by Scopitone2011
Let's just say that if you're a casual fighting fan who's never seen this one before and thinks that big dudes punching each other in the face repeatedly is awesome, you're in for a treat. This is why Don Frye EARNS his mustache. This would be my favorite MMA fight of all time, and I thought I'd throw it in for a change of pace, in honor of UFC tonight.
Henderson-Rua from last year topped it.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't my favorite fight(that'd be Ben Henderson vs. Cowboy Cerrone I) but this is undoubtedly awesome. No technique just punching each other in the face.
ReplyDeleteIt takes Don Frye an hour to shave his mustache off every morning.
ReplyDeleteWith a laser.
ReplyDeleteLauzon and Miller are doing Frye and Takayama proud right now. Absolute bloodbath heading into the 3rd.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding... Holy shit what a fight.
ReplyDeleteThose two late sub attempts from J-Lo were crazy. Fight of the year.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that. I'm not watching the fights live, but Lauzon is awesome. He's one of those guys where I don't care if he wins or loses, I just wanna see him fight.
ReplyDeletePeople have thought for awhile that this fight was a work. Frye (to his credit) has said that he's never taken part in a rigged fight. Takayama has been known to "play ball" though. So...who knows. It was certainly something different.
ReplyDeleteThat's bad booking in my opinion, though. You gotta have Lauzon win with the last second submission right there. Build up the rematch as the chance for Miller to redeem himself from horrible last second loss. Put Miller over in the 2nd match, then blow off the feud at Mania.
ReplyDeleteJDS looks terrible.
ReplyDeleteCain's just dragging him around. Ragdolling him.
ReplyDeleteOnly because JDS never recovered from that first big shot.
ReplyDeleteHe just lost his fight in the first real exchange. He's not done yet though, he's still punching. Doesn't have much left but it's never over till its over.
ReplyDeleteJDS looks like the elephant man.
ReplyDeleteThis is the best JDS has looked. Looks like he finally recovered from the 1st.
ReplyDeleteJDS is gonna KO Cain in the 5th.
ReplyDeleteOr not.
ReplyDeleteThe lineup for bowing down to my greatness starts around the corner.
ReplyDeleteStill meh on Cain. His takedowns were shit in the first. It was only after he rocked him that he was able to take him down. Not hard to rag doll a guy who is out on his feet for 2 rounds. I actually thought JDS looked better than Cain in the 4th and 5th.
ReplyDeleteThe old Cain of "questionable power" showed up today (as questionable as a guy's power can be who stops everyone in the 1st round). The fight showed the best and worst of Cain. He literally worked the fight out of JDS in the first round. JDS was just matador-ing him for the first 2:30 or so. I thought Rogan did a really good job of pointing out that JDS was already tired in the middle of the first round just from Cain pushing the pace. Then he got tagged and that was about all for him until the 4th round.
ReplyDeleteCain had him so many different times. Rogan kept saying "if he pushes away and flurries he can stop this fight" but he never did. I agreed with what you said in a different post that JDS started looking fresher by the end, he just never got his legs back so he couldn't stop the takedowns.
Other than Overeem it's not like anyone can take advantage of this weakness though. You're not going to bullrush Overeem like Cain did to JDS otherwise you're going to get your guts kneed out through your back. And if you let Overeem off the hook he's always dangerous; he doesn't have that 2004 gas tank anymore.
Really the UFC HW division misses pre-illness Brock. Brock-in-theory would have been the perfect match for Cain, out wrestle him, smother him and pound him out. A pity that fight never happened and Brock was ruined before the fight could happen.
I don't think it was fixed in the conventional sense. They probably just decided to punch the fuck out of each other beforehand to see who would win. I suspect the same thing of the legendary Ultimate Fighter finale.
ReplyDeleteFrye is my favorite of the old school guys! I took him through the campaign mode of UFC Undisputed 3 and even made a CAW of him for WWE12.
ReplyDeleteOn this day last year I told Takayama on twitter that he was awesome and he replied: "Thank you, God damn!"
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Brock, I was thinking last night that UFC really misses him. Nobody, not Cain or JDS, not Jon Bones or Silva, can create a buzz just by being there like he did. It's kinda hard to describe, it was like an uneasiness throughout the whole night because no one knew what would happen. Only two guys had that, Tyson and Brock.
ReplyDeleteDamn, good comparison between lesnar and tyson.

ReplyDeleteThe rematch wasn't as good. But I have an inkling it might have been a work.
