God, the blog is deader than Junior Dos Santos' face tonight. Let's answer some questions!
Saw the list and couldn't agree more with this one. How in the world is this not a top ten moment? The WWF was on the rise and was bound to take over WCW in the ratings wars in 98 at some point, but I always felt like the moment X-Pac came out and just lit up Hogan, Bichoff and WCW with that rant was a seminal moment for the WWF and in industry in general. That moment of just shoving things right in WCW's face with a total FU attitude was what WWF fans were just dying for. The moment has sort of gotten lost in the shuffle over the years I think (maybe because Waltman never became a huge star), but anyone who followed wrestling at that point I think understands the impact it had. What do you think - am I overrating the significance of it? Oh not at all, watching with my roommate at the time we were losing our shit at seeing someone from WCW finally crossing back to the other side again, in the thick of the wars no less. It was not only a big pickup by itself, it was a signal that Vince was ready to play ball again and start signing away WCW's talent instead of just having everything flowing the one way. Plus it turned D-X into babyfaces eventually and we know how big that was.

Keyshawn Michaels!

THE BOYHOOD DREAM HAD COME TRUE!
Let the YES'ing commence!
David, you are my oprah.
ReplyDeleteINVASION~!
ReplyDeleteThat particular RAW seemed to make it more than obvious that WCW losing on a Monday night was imminent. Hell, I was getting inklings all the way back when Austin shot Mike Tyson the bird.
ReplyDeleteWaltman was a huge part of the nWo swag. For months before his debut in WWE the entire nWo was rocking Syxx Ball shirts and constantly shouting out 6pac. I also think Nash and Hall really stopped giving a fuck after he left. That Raw was awesome with Val Venis debut promo, and a crazy NAO vs. Funk/Foley cage match. That Raw turned the tide for good IMO.
ReplyDeleteDon't be downvoting me, y'all should be downvoting yourselves! DON'T WHAT ME!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Dos Santos' face.
ReplyDeletehttp://imageshack.us/a/img69/4231/jdsface.gif
It's just hard to think of him that way nowadays for me; he's just the greasy haired washed up guy who filmed himself with Chyna's pencil sized nether button and I can't unsee it without ever seeing it.
ReplyDeleteHHH doing a good/bad job and his history of playing political games circa 2003-05.
ReplyDeleteI thought this thread was about Waltman debuting in 1993 as the Cannonball/Kamikaze/Lightning Kid before eventually beating Razor.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up mostly an NWA/WCW fan, I was firmly in the Nitro camp and would record Raw to watch the next day. Of course, I did the usual channel flipping during commercials and even my jaw hit the floor when I saw Syxx walk out on Raw. Huge mistake by Bisch there. He was a part of the coolness factor that Nash and Hall brought. Just for that alone, he was worth keeping around.
ReplyDeleteHoly Fuckballs, his face!!
ReplyDeleteHEY YOU GUUUUYS!
ReplyDeleteAn open topic so we can all discuss our Los Boricuas fantasy booking ideas.
ReplyDeleteThought it was about his debut in the porn industry. I am disappoint.
ReplyDeleteAnd kudos to Scott for predicting that Cain was gonna take it. Many people, myself included, thought JDS had it in the bag. Whew, did he ever catch a beating.
ReplyDeleteReally wasn't impressed with either guy last night.
ReplyDeleteHatians gonna hait.
ReplyDeleteWait,no.
He's one of those I guys I never liked period. Didn't like the Lightening Kid or the 123 Kid or Syxxxxx Pac or any of it. Not sure why. He just always bothered me.
ReplyDelete"Pencil sized nether button"?
ReplyDeleteMan, i fell out. Too funny, consider it stolen.
I thought Cain looked like a monster. His wrestling was relentless. He rocked JDS, the best boxer in the division, multiple times on the feet. I'd say the Cain from last night finishes Overeem within 2 rounds.
ReplyDeleteOnce I saw Cain beating Bigfoot Silva into a bloody pulp, I knew Junior was in trouble.
ReplyDeleteReally? Did Cain need to actually rip Junior's arm off and beat him to death with it in order to impress you? Not sure what else would have done the trick.
ReplyDeleteThey could've been huge.
ReplyDeleteLESNAR
ReplyDeleteHe looked terrible during the first 2 minutes. His take down attempts were embarrassing. Then he rocks JDS, and can't put a guy away who is out on his feet for 2 rounds.
ReplyDeleteHe looked liked monster against a guy who was in la la land.
ReplyDeleteThe Jericho debut resonates much more to me. Like many WCW watchers, I didn't think much of Waltman -- he was basically Hall and Nash's errand boy.
ReplyDeleteJericho, on the other hand, was a guy everyone thought was great but knew would never get a chnace in WCW. His debut made it seems like WWF really was the place to see good wrestling and entertaining storylines.
Looks like Little Mac between rounds vs Super Macho Man.
ReplyDeleteThe League of Doom playoffs ended in week 17? Whoever set up the league needs smacked if that is the case.
ReplyDeleteWhat big debut jumps were there during the Monday night wars?
ReplyDeleteWCW
Luger
Rude being on both shows
Outsiders
Raven was made to be a big deal when he jumped from ECW.
WWF
Jericho
XPac
Big Show
Were they any other big moves? I can't think of any off the top of my head.
HANDS UP HIGH
ReplyDeleteShawn Stasiak from WWF to WCW!
ReplyDeleteAlso Jeff Jarrett to WCW to WWF to WCW to WWF to WCW to WWF to WCW to WWF...
I don't really see Stasiak as a big jump.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Jarrett's multiple jumps. He is one guy that is always just there and never stands out. When he got his big WCW push, I just changed the channel when he was on.
I believe Curt Hennig debuted the same Nitro as Raven. At the end of the episode, Raven jumped the barricade, and Hennig came down the ramp.
ReplyDeleteThe Radicals, although the war was basically over by that point.
Crap I forgot about Hennig, I read the recap of that Nitro on here recently too.
ReplyDeleteThe war was basically over with the Radicals, but another one I forgot about.
Haku!
ReplyDeleteWaltman was huge. The war was on at that point.
ReplyDeleteUmmm... fuck you...
ReplyDeleteI remember loving that ending, it was wild, where Raven jumped the rail, Hennig came down the ramp and then I think Sting was in the ring. Just one of those big Holy Shit moments that gave a real sense of possibility there for fun and mayhem. Unfortunately Raven seemed restricted to interacting with a certain subgroup and Hennig never did much outside the initial Flair angle until the West Texas Rednecks stuff.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Jericho did all of that -- that moment really gave you the feeling, even as a WCW fan that the WWF had figured it all out and WCW was basically lost in the maze.
ReplyDeletecongrats!!!
ReplyDeleteI also wanna say the "promos" for the last match were hilarious!
ReplyDeleteDavids promo from 12/24

Well ya know something Brother Keyshawn Scum Michaels I didn't come out here to brag or boast. I came here to talk about My Spot. Not my dog Spot, not my liver spot, not the huge spot on Dusty Rhodes gut, but maaah spot. My spot is holding this here championship. And you know what I'll be doing after winning this matchup? Fat broads. Yeah FAT broads! The same fat broads that've been chasing the Whoresmen around for decades. I've seen hard times along the way. Let me tell ya about hard times. I've wined and dined with Packers and Pats, and I've slept in alleys with Titans and Cats (Lions). I'll admit that along with those hard times I've had my Sunny days as well. But in conclusion I'm going to grab that championship and then, with a tear in my eye, I'll admit it will be the greatest moment of my life.
Both very good parodies and im proud you guys made it to the finals. Thanks all to making the FFLoD a relative success. Stay tuned next year for FFLoD2: JOBBERS!!!
Bret Hart
ReplyDeleteI looked into it and he was totally being serious, no sarcasm at all.
ReplyDeleteGod yes. Jarrett always sucked.
ReplyDeleteBeing a huge ECW mark at the time, that debut was pretty epic for me. Of course WCW immediately fucked it up by attaching him to Riggs, Sick Boy, and Reese. They had a weird way of consistently undercutting Raven any time he had a lot of momentum behind him.
ReplyDeleteAlways found Super Macho Man to be tougher than Mike Tyson.
ReplyDeleteI thought you did a good job but next year those restrictions on players at their position have to go and an IR spot or two would be nice.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, jobbing to Doink as The Cannonball Kid was not one of the great RAW moments of all time.
ReplyDeleteI recall Waltman's actual RAW debut (jobbing to a Doink stump puller as The Cannonball Kid) really getting the smark community into an uproar over how the WWF was wasting his talents.

ReplyDeleteA fantasy football season should always end in week 16. A lot of teams have nothing to play for in week 17. Based on your above post, you used ESPN, which defaults to week 16/17 being the championship.
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy your well thought out response Fuj, I am going to guess you are thirteen or fourteen.
I wasn't sure about the Jarrett portion, there are people that like him for some reason.
ReplyDeleteI should have seen the Stasiak sarcasm, but I was tired and missed it.
13 and a half!!!!
ReplyDeleteand since it was my first time commish-ing a FF league I only did what the league members voted for.
Since you were the cutie pie to who said i should be smacked, i figured your age to be about 13 too... Wanna trade baseball cards?
I stand corrected.
ReplyDeleteWas this the first year for everyone playing? Week 17 is just a bad idea for a championship game.
Double that age and add a few years, though I do have baseball cards in storage.
Do children still trade/collect baseball cards?
no worries.
ReplyDeleteyou are more than welcome to join next year.
We came to the concensus wk 16 will finish next year.
i have no clue about kids and cards these days.
Do you guys do snake or auction? I have found auction to be the most fun, as it gives everyone an opportunity to get every player.
ReplyDeleteI've always felt that a *healthy* Waltman would be an asset to any company. It's too bad that even on a good day his speech and movement is that of a fried "dude" who tries to have swag but comes across like a d-bag frat boy.
ReplyDeleteI first read it as "penis sized nether button". Both work, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI still to this day have never been able to beat him.
ReplyDeleteOddly enough I just read Bishoff's book where he addresses this - he negotiated a contract extension for Waltman that Waltman didn't actually sign. He started paying him under the terms of the new contract, which gave him a raise, then when he tried to get him to actually sign it Waltman wanted to re-negotiate the terms, so he fired him. In retrospect it was a bad move - it seems like Bishoff was trying to take a stand and was rubbed the wrong way by what he thought was unprofessional actions by Waltman, but if he just re-signs him he hands out in the nWo and cruiserweight division and doesn't cause a stir. Instead he goes to WWE and cuts a great promo that kicked off the DX face turn. He really did have a swagger and attitude that rubbed off on the rest of DX.
ReplyDeleteAs much shit as he gets over the years, let's not forget that he was hot shit for a year and 1/2 there. He was one of their top faces until after him and Kane lost to Undertaker and Big show at Summerslam 1999 and they didn't have much for him to do until the heel turn. I don't know why people hated him that much. He rode the DX thing into the ground but in early 2000 he returned with a new look/music and I thought he'd be a decent midcard IC level guy.
On Bishoff's book - I'm not finished yet but he comes off well. He doesn't bury Hogan at all but he's open about his manipulation and politics to. He even tries to be diplomatic about Ric Flair's situation, even if Flair buried him in his book and attacked him backstage. I found his view on Canadians to be hilariously accurate, and as a Canadian have been trying to find the words to explain it myself over the years. It really is obnoxious.
