WON Awards 2012 (aka NJPW Wins Everything)

I'm not gonna just c&p from the new Observer because if I was Dave I'd hate for people to do that, so I'll throw some hits CRZ's way instead.  

Clearly, Tanahashi had a hell of a year and actually got me to watch TWO New Japan PPVs on the strength of his matches, so that's an MVP in my books.  Congrats to Bad Influence on a well deserved Tag Team award, and I'm a little weirded out by TNA winning worst promotion but Impact winning Best Show.  

So yeah, no major quibbles here.

    How is Jim Ross announcer of the year? He worked like 2 shows. And Cena as the number 2 draw? And lulz at Cena/Rock being a top 3 feud of the year.

    I wish these awards would finally change the "Overrated/Underrated" categories to "Overpushed/Underpushed" since that's what they're really about.
    I mean, if you wanted to say someone like...Kevin Steen for example is overrated, fine, that's something you can have a conversation about. But it's not like anybody (or at least anybody who reads/votes on these things) is going around saying Ryback is awesome, so how can he be "overrated"?
    I know, semantics, but it bugs me dammit!

    Extreme Rising should have been worst promotion of the year. Steve Richards is the world champ and Shane Douglas has main evened some shows and guys overdosed on the shows.

    My interpretation has always been:


    Overrated = guy I don't like.
    Underrated = guy I like.


    I'm sure it's supposed to have a deeper meaning, but that's what it ends up being in tha internetz~!

    I know. My point is what was so memorable about Ross this year? He spit some analogies that didn't quite make sense and read some college resumes.

    The one that I'm rather curious about is Match of the Year. HHH vs. Undertaker doesn't even make the top four? Really?

    Why does Observer feel the need to place RAW in the top 4? And I like how they gave Impact best Weekly Show, yet placed it lower than WWE for Promotion Of the Year.

    The thing with Ryback is you need guys like him to contrast the Zigglers and Bryans. Ryback is more middle of the road than anything else.

    It shows to an extent how insular the (loathe as I am to use the term) 'IWC' is when it comes to voting on this. As someone who watched Wrestlemania with a buddy who doesn't follow wrestling at all, the HHH/Undertaker match was something he said came close to 'art'. Obviously match-ratings are highly subjective but I reckon most casual fans of wrestling would rank HHH/Undertaker as a better match than anything else this year. Personally, I don't think anything came close to Cena/Lesnar but I don't really dig puro and am left cold by stuff like Elgin/Richards.

    I dug Taker/HHH but I haven't re-watched it or thought about were it would rank in my top 5 of the year. Probably around 4/5/6. 100% agree with you on puro and the Elgin/Richards wankfest. For me it's Brock/Cena, the Shield 6 man, a huge gap, then everything else.

    I'm not at all surprised given the style of the match, the participants, and the venue which the voting took place. It's certainly my match of the year although Shield vs. Hell No and Ryback came very close. I'm still too hurt by the finish of Cena vs. Lesnar to call it my match of the year.

    I think the awards run December to November, so the Shield match wouldn't have counted. But, yeah, that's probably the match I most enjoyed in 2012.

    I agree that Taz is worse but Cole is a puppet without the skill to sound like he doesn't have a hand up his ass like Ross.

    Well he definitely hasn't achieved his spot organically but the wwe marketing machine has made him the top guy in the world so that he is. At least he holds up his end in the ring (until after the match anyways.)

    The fact that Kane has won worst feud for a decade and still can get over is an incredible testament to Glen Jacobs' talent. Not to mention within the same calendar year transitioning from dark, demonic Kane to lovable hugging Kane without missing much of a beat

    I'm not really surprised. I mean, some people like the drama of it but others just saw it as two middle-aged dudes hitting each other with chairs and then lying around while Shawn Michaels made distraught faces.

    I agree. He's good on NXT with Regal but man, he was cringe-worthy during HHH-Taker at Mania with his stupid catchphrases.

    I was going to post the same thing - Kane is a decently talented guy, but his gimmick has led to MANY horrible angles. Kudos to him for always being able to rise above whatever crap they give him.

    Yeah, why exactly does CZW always get snubbed for the Worst Promotion award every year? CZW, Extreme Rising, the NWA and ROH were far more deserving of that award than TNA this year.

    even with IPPV snaffus putting them in with CZW, Extreme Rising, and "both competitors in the match don't want the belt" NWA seems unfair to ROH

    (Frankly, I'm surprised Aries/Roode wasn't in the running, as it was #5 on my list for 2012.)
