cultstatus doesn't want a Cena/Rock trilogy. Are you bonkers?! What do you mean the Rock just stands there grinning for 5 minutes and says EVERYTHING twice?! He's just EVOLVED, man! And Cena's kept himself fresh in these ever changing times. You're crazy, man:

I'm Mark Madden: Professional Troll
ReplyDeleteSwagger vs Alberto at WM? I'm fucking SHOCKED they're doing this.
ReplyDeleteAnd what about Punk? It'd be sort of neat if on Raw we have Punk calling out Taker, and next week Taker answers, but says he has nothing to prove, and doesn't feel like teaching him a lesson, but he knows someone who'd love to, and then Shawn comes out. I mean, what better way to get another match out of Shawn than The Undertaker saying it's alright?
If not, another Punk v Jericho at WM would be fine with me
Does Jr really think billy 'gass man' Gunn deserves to be in the same breath as Henning and hart???
ReplyDeleteMark Madden is dumb.
ReplyDeleteI know. Adr is good against monsters, and Henry was right there...
ReplyDeleteYeh, this is Wrestlemania - Rematch Edition afterall. Might as well.
ReplyDeleteI like the HBK idea better, though.
Great worker, can't argue with that. Always gets the tongues wagging. Or fingers typing...
ReplyDeleteMark Madden the Wonder Troll
ReplyDeleteNah, let HBK stay retired. And no to Punk v. Jericho. Had enough of that match and feud.
ReplyDeleteWhy is mark madden still a thing
ReplyDeleteOr even Ziggler??
ReplyDeletekerry von erich achieved SUPERstardom before stepping in a wwf ring...
ReplyDeleteAnyone else think the whole Swagger/Del Rio dynamic is 10 years too late?
ReplyDeletei disagree.
ReplyDeleteas probably the only swagger mark here. im all for it.
adr is getting face heat and swagger thru dutch is getting a reaction. id save it for the summer but if ur gonna bomb, might as well bomb on the biggest stage.
...and im a madden mark...
ReplyDeletei agree with alot of what he says.
Apologies - i'm like, 26. I didn't see him in his hayday, unfortunately..
ReplyDeleteHe's just saying he sees elements of him.
ReplyDeleteYup, I like Madden. Don't agree with everything, but I like him.
ReplyDeleteEven if he doesn't? I mean, he's like any other shock jock where nearly 1/2 of what he says he doesn't believe in or simply exaggerates for effect.
ReplyDelete1. The Shane McMahon caption is funny, but kudos to him for not being needlessly obsessed with his looks as Vince is. Vince has been dying his hair for close to 30 years now (and still dyes it for the salt and pepper look). 30 years~! Vincent J and Shane didn't really care.
ReplyDelete2. Can someone create a post where we can just talk about how awesome the Shield is?
It's only because of the fame asser
ReplyDeleteBeen saying it for weeks Punk Brock vs. DX -no dq
ReplyDeleteJust watch his 2 out of 3 falls on the second Flair DVD, awesome match and the crowd is rabid for him.
ReplyDeleteI know right, which name doesn't belong here: "comparing him to Curt Hennig, Billy Gunn and Shawn Michaels."
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of what Madden said. The main issue I have is with not including Punk as a "A" wrestler based off look. Punk may not have the typical wrestler look, but I don't see anything glaringly wrong with it.
ReplyDeleteI would say Punk is an A- wrestler, but ONLY because of how he's booked. Had they followed up Summer of Punk properly, I have no doubt he'd be up there with Austin and Rock right now.
Cena should also be an "A". He gets the biggest reactions even if they aren't 100% positive. And Cena's another one that would be as over as Rock if he was booked so poorly.
The match itself should be good... Add Dutch and Ricardo at ringside, that is a fun dynamic. We all understand the dynamic they are going for, we are also a little shocked that Alberto Del Rio vs Jack Swagger will be a top 4 match at a Wrestlemania
ReplyDeleteMark Madden might be my least favorite ever commentator not named Rob Bartlett.
ReplyDeleteAlso, he referred to Bret Hart as "judge, jury and hangman" when he could have gone with "judge, jury and Hitman" or "judge, jury and Excellence of Executioner." Tsk tsk.
ReplyDeleteComparisons in style don't have to be comparisons in quality/scale.
ReplyDeleteSo this guy gives Michaels an 'A' grade when two of the criteria are drawing power and reliability?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, why didn't Henry win the Chamber?
ReplyDeleteI'd rather have Bryan vs. Jericho although I don't see that coming together in time.
ReplyDeleteIt's going on the Youtube Preshow.
ReplyDeletehaha Alright guys, cut me some slack! I can't watch every match ever. I mean, I try, but..
ReplyDeleteWill give it a watch some time! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteIf the past couple WMs are any indication... it jerks the curtain.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Cena is definitely an A. I loathe everything about his character, but he's undeniably the biggest star they've had since Rock and Austin left.
ReplyDeleteI just don't understand where he's coming from on workrate. How you can regard Rock/Austin/Taker as A's while not putting Hogan on the same level is ridiculous. Taker was a terribly boring wrestler until about 2005 when he reinvented himself. Rock and Austin followed the Hogan blueprint of creating dramatic moments out of basic moves. They are/were brawlers who told good stories in the ring.
Where it belongs. I said it in the EC thread, but Swagger beats up jobbers two weeks in a row, wins the Elimination Chamber and suddenly we're supposed to buy him as this big threat just because he's sporting a "Don't Tread On Me" bumpersticker?
ReplyDeleteFrom EC 2012 to his return in January, Swagger won ONE SINGLES MATCH. AND IT WAS AGAINST ZACK RYDER.
It doesn't scream WrestleMania main event, since Swagger has always been portrayed as a chump - WHC reign included - and his return is two weeks old. Had they brought him back before the Rumble and allowed a month or so more of build-up, it would have a lot more heat.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, with six weeks or so before the big event, they can build it up. The storyline is pretty simple, so it shouldn't be that hard. But they could have added to it with a few weeks of build. "I want the shot at Mania, and I'll get the shot at Mania and win the WHC because the WHC should be around the waist of a real American (American American)."
Whatever happened to the 6 man being in the chamber like the newz sites said?
ReplyDeleteIn Mark Maddens year book his quote was "I cant believe I ate the whole thing."
ReplyDeleteMark Madden was a thing?
ReplyDeleteTo someone besides Vince Russo, that is?
Just For Men Touch of Grey "for those silver foxe's who like to keep a hint of grey."
ReplyDeleteIf I'm Dolph Ziggler, I would really rather not be compared to Billy Gunn.
ReplyDeleteI remember him being happy to put over Backlund.
ReplyDeleteand *really* depressing
ReplyDeleteyeah. up until then, Backlund never had his breakthrough moment
ReplyDeleteSo I think after the belt shot to the face, Heyman is going to have Lesnar take out Punk, setting up their Mania match.
ReplyDeleteas crummy as Gunn could be, he was a great athlete
ReplyDeleteHeyman's character isn't dumb enough to think Punk deserves punishment for that
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting to see if we somehow get a three-way. That bit with the second ref running just to check on the first ref instead of COUNT THE PIN, like every other referee in wrestling history has done, is way too screwy.
ReplyDeleteYup, I've commented a lot about Bret Hart over the course of a couple of weeks where Bret Hart and his comments about Triple H are posted every second or third day. It was an honest question - for those that defend him to the end, why? That's it. Now in an effort to avoid being repetitive, let's get back to talking about why Daniel Bryan should get a push and why CM Punk should headline Wrestlemania.
ReplyDeletecute kip, bg james, and xpac gonna be involved too???
ReplyDeleteHe wasn't happy it lead to Diesel getting the title...the booking of that whole thing really didn't make sense. They got Backlund over as an interesting character - then squashed him immediately after he won the title to kick off the Diesel Era. But wouldn't put Diesel over Bret in his first pay per view defense...it doesn't seem like Vince could make a decision and really go with it.
ReplyDeleteHe's probably not. But Lesnar's not likely to give a fuck. So it's plausible that Heyman would ask Punk to apologize to keep the peace. If Punk says no, well, one F-5 later ...
ReplyDeletesame boat
ReplyDelete2.5
ReplyDeletePunk kicked out of Rock's finishers twice, and got the visual pin on him - they made an effort to make him look strong, possibly for a Wrestlemania main event.
ReplyDeletenot to say I don't enjoy the hell out of the idea of the matchup
ReplyDeleteI don't know what argument I'm trying to make here. I apologize.
ReplyDelete/hangs head in shame
WWE already has Rock/Cena II up on the website, they won't change it now.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why people say this so often. People know who John Cena is. Lots and lots and lots of people. He's a legitimate celebrity.
ReplyDeletescott hudson, "stagger" lee marshall
ReplyDeleteyou see the bella twins are on the nfl network now??? doing commentary on the top ten countdowns lol.
ReplyDeleteAt least the Punk and Bryan topics aren't, you know, 16-20 years old and although I have zero issue with whatever anyone posts and recycled topics, your inability to listen to any of the other argument in countless of posts from those threads and then coming right back here and starting the exact same discussion is what's fucking annoying frankly. You don't want to discuss whether Bret or Shawn or whatever was right or wrong, you just want to prove how right you are...so yeah, still?
ReplyDeleteI dont see Punk jobbing 3 ppvs in a row do you??? If he wrestles taker thats an L, and if he wrestles Lesnar I believe thats another L.
ReplyDelete"You folks have fun with your spray tans and senate runs. I'll just be over here opening up the internet to China."
ReplyDeleteThought you were joking at first. Thought about it. Now I'm on board.
ReplyDeletePersonally, how a guy is outside the make believe world of wrestling has little to do with how much a fan I am. If the work is good, they are golden. That goes for Bret/Shawn/Flair, whoever. Very few guys in wrestling are decent folks.
ReplyDeleteDepends on how "legitimate" you're talking. Cena gets guest spots on USA shows, Rock is the Trevor Hoffman of action-movie franchises.
ReplyDeleteI think it's even-money on Punk going over in a Lesnar match, actually, depending on what the plan is and how many appearances he's booked for.
ReplyDeleteWith a Montreal Screwjob sequel?
ReplyDeleteKerry Von Erich was a HUGE star in Texas before arriving to the WWE. He and the Von Erich family were making serious money for WCCW and made WCCW a powerful territory.
ReplyDeleteBecause he brings the goods. What's not to like? Solid interview, good matches, good gimmick. Sounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteUp until a few weeks ago I would have said Lee Marshall, but as of right now I'd say Truth Martini is my least favorite by a mile. He's so bad that words can hardly describe it, but let me just say there's no fucking reason at all to be bringing up gloryholes while commentating a wrestling match.
ReplyDeleteMadden was awful in his right too though, I'd say he was than Cole and Lawler are now.
Nail on the fucking head.
ReplyDeleteAlso why the fuck should bret fans justify their fandom to him of all people?
Again, Bret Hart made newsworthy comments that started a debate that's been brought up and brought up again every couple of days for two weeks now. If it keeps coming up why can't I comment on it?
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to justify it. Shawn was a dick. I acknowledge it, I still liked him more. You like who you like but with Bret there seems to be this need to believe he was this wholesome company guy who was wronged by the egotistical dick head and the evil owner.
ReplyDeleteSo people in the locker room were supposedly bent out of shape when "part-timer" The Rock returned last year to headline the show, but no one is ready to mutiny when Jack Swagger, of all people, returns and gets the World title match at Mania? I realize that title doesn't really mean anything, but still.
ReplyDeleteTheres commenting and then theres constantly bringing up the same arguments after theyve been discussed in other threads (with you).
ReplyDeleteYoure rehashing it to make sure we understand how right you are.
Wouldn't be the first time they changed an advertised WM main event.
ReplyDeleteYep. Which is probably the aspect of Billy Gunn that JR was referring to.
ReplyDeleteIs Mark Madden the only smark wrestling writer to actually get hired by a wrestling company (as a commentator no less)? I remember there were rumors that Dave Meltzer turned down a job with the WWE, but I can't think of anyone else.
ReplyDeleteThey are both egomaniacs, for sure.
ReplyDeleteBut we like us some Shawn Michaels around here too, and if you were coming down on him all the time then people would disagree with that too.
Swagger has been and will be on the road with these guys every night.
ReplyDeleteSee, now that's a fair and logical point. And that's how I feel. I liked Shawn more. I don't care if he was a dick in the locker room, I don't care if he had an ego, I just liked him more. But with the Bret/Shawn argument there's a certain amount of "Bret was a good guy" used to explain how he was wronged. They were both egotistical assholes in their way.
ReplyDeleteI domt think anyone actually believes that.
ReplyDeleteAs for myself, i think it was the right thing to do but still consider it fucked up and crappy.
Most people probably think that way about it imo
There was a rumor that Madden was looking for a job with TNA after he was fired from his ESPN radio gig in Pittsburgh in 2009. Thankfully, that never happened.
ReplyDeleteUgh...I think your problem is you don't listen or comprehend what you're reading. Bret talked about HHH and you somehow roped this back into the tired Montreal discussion. That's what keeps getting brought up, not tired old Montreal and your obsession to get people to admit whatever it is you want them to admit. Move on already.
ReplyDeleteHe always makes up bullshit about what jobs he can get now in wrestling.
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't leave either guy alone in a room with my (non existant) daughter, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteMark Madden is an idiot. He never criticizes his good friends Kevin Nash and Ric Flair when they do and say stupid stuff. So that takes away any credibility he has.
ReplyDeleteSecond, Madden could not even hold on to a sweet ESPN radio gig. He said something stupid about somebody in the Kennedy family and he got fired.
Mark Madden was the worst commentator to ever work in wrestling. Why this loser is still relevant is beyond me.
I liked the Swagger/ADR feud, but it doesn't feel quite like a WM program. I'd rather ADR go over Henry at WM, then do the Swagger feud afterwards.
ReplyDeleteMadden is the same way with the local sports here in Pittsburgh. Will bend over backwards to defend his favorites.
ReplyDeleteReally I'd like to say that I don't recall him ever being relevant.
ReplyDeleteBut we grant him his relevance by paying attention to what he says.
I feel bad for the people of Pittsburgh. Don't tell me his radio show gets ratings? Is he popular or do people see him for the doofus that he is?
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone really listens to radio anymore so who knows.
ReplyDeleteMaybe not relevant, but pretty damn ubiquitous. I mean, I wouldn't say he's any less relevant than Dave Meltzer or Wade Keller. He's certainly been around just as long covering wrestling.
ReplyDeleteThis one is legit. I remember reading a story where Nash apologized to Taz for putting a tweet up saying that TNA should hire his buddy Madden. Nash then proceeded to insult the IWC because he was not trying to replace Taz with Madden.
ReplyDeleteOh, well commentary in smaller promotions is usually horrible. I don't know any of the names of ROH PBP guys but I remember one guy used to always make the exact same type of transition like 3 times a match. It would be like "Well I don't know about that, I had a delicious hot dog for lunch, and what else was delicious was that dropkick by Christopher Daniels!" I wanted to punch things every time.
ReplyDeleteIt feels a bit sudden. ADR turning face and winning the title came out of nowhere...as did Swagger's return and new character. The thinking might be putting them in a title match will quickly get them over, but I think it just goes to show how little prestige there is to the title now.
ReplyDeleteI really don't think that anyone is all that passionate about Montreal in 2013.
ReplyDeleteThose of us that like Bret like him for his work, and for nostalgia. The same reasons that anyone likes any wrestler.
I don't think he's wrong in this case. I don't follow him and have always thought of him as an idiot, but if the argument is that Bret and HHH were about on the same level, I'd agree. Neither were mega-stars, neither were huge draws, even if both think they are. Both have some classic matches, both have been involved in some great angles, both could be counted on for solid, if not always memorable matches. I think it's a fair comparison.
ReplyDeleteI agree, except I give both of them an A.
ReplyDeleteMark Madden is a Ric Flair guy. Flair is a Triple guy; Flair never liked Bret Hart. Madden has worked with Flair in writing the book, To Be The Man, which also featured a introduction by Triple H.
ReplyDeleteHe just had three matches with Show. Let him do something else for a while.
ReplyDeleteYep. I know plenty of people who don't watch wrestling, but know who Cena is.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the most recognizable full-time guy, I would hazard. No one else comes close.
ReplyDeleteAlso they have somewhat similar hair and tights.
ReplyDeletewhich documentary? the WWE one on the WCCW? Or the one Kevin Von Erich that came out a year earlier?
ReplyDeleteI think Henry deserves the summer feud.......or a heel Orton.
ReplyDeleteBecause Swagger has this anti-immigration thing going and Del Rio happens to be Hispanic. Del Rio/Henry sounds MUCH more compelling than Del Rio/Swagger. I don't care how great the promos get, Mark Henry is great TV.
ReplyDeleteDude, it's Jack Swagger. A couple of weeks wouldn't make a difference
ReplyDeleteAccording to Bret's book Flair gave him glowing reviews time and time again.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's an inaccurate comparison. If anything you can say Triple H is the bigger star, but that's not entirely fair because you're comparing different eras.
Martini isn't a regular commentator, he's a manager that has been doing a lot of guest commentary because his entire stable kicked him to the curb. I'm not sure of the names of the guys that were doing commentary for ROH when Daniels was with the company (ex-WWE guy Kevin Kelly and Caleb Seltzer are the current commentators, and are pretty decent), but they were indeed pretty shitty. The CZW guys are pretty bad too, and while I think they're hilarious a lot of people despise the PWG guys.
ReplyDeleteFlair is not a household name? I would strongly dispute that. LeBron James knows who Ric Flair is.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly from the book, Flair sided with McMahon in the whole Montreal screwjob. But Flair was also careful in saying that he was not there so he did not know the full story.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but knowing the WWE, this is one match they won't change. This isn't like changing Big Show vs. Triple H or Big Show vs. Edge.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Henry needs a long run with the belt, so if ADR is holding for the forseeable future, then sacrificing swagger is fine
ReplyDelete"What's not to like?" --that right there is the question that needs to be asked. All of his big matches seemed to tell a unique and nearly epic story. His interviews were good and bordered on great in 1997. He was technically proficient in a time where body size was more important. The list goes on and on.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why anyone these days would have to justify their fandom for Bret or Shawn. It's like asking, "Why do you like pizza?" or, "Why is chocolate so good?" It's like asking, "What's the appeal of Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Willie Mays?" If you have to ask, you're never going to get it.
Each athlete I just mentioned had their share of flaws, but we don't put their morals on a pedestal. And most Bret and Shawn fans don't put their past behaviors on a pedestal, either.
I think if Swagger's new character had more than one week to build up, it might feel more like a WM program. As it is now, it just feels slapped together.
ReplyDeleteUh oh.
ReplyDeleteOh in Flair's book he does. In Bret's book he mentions Flair complimenting him a couple of times and wanting to get him into WCW. Flair was firmly on McMahon's side in his book and didn't think much of Bret as a worker. Bret's opinion of himself is a bit inflated and Flair is as two-faced as they come, so the truth's probably in the middle there.
ReplyDeleteFor as bad as Taz has become, at least he's bad in a funny way, like Botchamania will attest to. Madden's bad in a way that makes me want to punch my TV screen.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. Whenever I see some of WCW Nitro from 2000 on a WWE DVD or WWE Classics on Demand, he's awful. Yelling at the top of his lungs, using lame catchphrases from Kevin Smith flicks.
ReplyDeleteMark Madden was the worst announcer to ever work for a wrestling promotion. Either he knew that WCW was going out of business so why bother trying or he was just not that good and was not ready for prime time. I wish I knew that answer.
Trying to decipher the truth from both Bret and Flair is always fun!
ReplyDeleteI doubt it would have been as good in the Chamber.
ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteThey're both egomaniacs, but no, Michaels isn't better than Hart at anything besides selling and promos. ...In my opinion.
ReplyDeleteWas just about to bring this guy up. Donnie B from the first ROH shows in 2002. He's Nova's(Simon Dean) brother. Him and Steve Corino are one of the worst announce teams I've ever heard.
ReplyDeleteHmm we've gone from Punk-Rock to Vinnie-Paul.
ReplyDeleteGotta disagree - not saying they necessary WILL change it, just that the door is definitely open. They're announcing Rock/Cena just because it makes sense in the storyline to do so: Cena won the "Rumble" and Rock is the champ, so the match was basically "set" as soon Rock was announced as the winner last night.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, Punk's basically been screwed at the last two PPVs - no way Vince would have gone to all the trouble of protecting Punk if he weren't at least toying with the idea of making it a three-way at "WM". I'd put money on them actually going through with it.
I instantly thought of this post as soon as I saw a "Don't Tread On Me" flag during Zeb's first promo.
ReplyDeleteSpot-on prediction, man.
*takes the under and the points*
ReplyDeletewho the Fuck thought Swagger in a title match screamed wrestlemania
ReplyDeleteIt was just too easy to see that coming.
ReplyDelete
