In this day and age, are PPV payouts still at the whim of Vince McMahon or have guidelines ever been given to the wrestlers?
On a similar note, what is the most lopsided payout you are aware of in a main event (I remember Rick Rude quit over his 1990 payout vs. the Warrior's)

Some of the payouts are written right into contracts (like the tippy top guys), most are at the whims of the WWE machine. Notably as of late the company has been playing games with the numbers to take payoffs away from guys and move the money to other divisions that are losing money. Even when guys like Punk and Bryan put on a **** classic at Over the Limit, they can get screwed out of a main event payoff.
As for lopsided payouts, I think Hogan-Earthquake was pretty much weighted only in Hulk's direction. Rock-Cena was I think also pretty lopsided in that Rock made MILLIONS for one match and Cena probably just a single million for it.
Mwahaha I'm loving this Over The Limit running joke. I loved that match though, I was hoping and praying for the full-on Surfboard, and it happened, and it earned all the stars I could possibly give it!
ReplyDeleteDamn, I won't be able to sleep tonight knowing Cena made only 1 million dollars for WM that year.
ReplyDeleteWho's that tall guy standing beside you in your profile pic?
ReplyDeleteWill we break the 5 star glass ceiling???
ReplyDeleteJeez, that must mean Jericho hardly got 250K orginally then.
ReplyDeleteCena was allegedly fucking some porn starlet while still married.
ReplyDeleteHe's lucky even got paid. He's one of the absolute worst of all time.
ReplyDeleteExcept she denied ever having even met him. When has a mistress from the entertainment industry ever denied something like that?
ReplyDeleteTriple H initially got about 5 times as much for Wrestlemania X8 than Jericho. In his book Jericho talks about how he was so pissed he told Shane that he felt like quitting. Vince eventually bumped up his pay though
ReplyDeleteKamala was supposedly pissed about his payouts versus the Undertaker's during their feud.
ReplyDeleteThat's the guy he took to the Old Country...
ReplyDeleteI think Cena finally earned some sympathy from me. I mean, he had to settle for a meager million dollars. That's gotta be rough. He probably had to cut into his cargo shorts budget so he could no longer buy the beige ones, he had to settle for the tan pair. FUCK YOU, ROCK! I HATE YOU! JOHN CENA NEEDS HIS BEIGE SHORTS, YOU BALD HEADED FUCK!
ReplyDeleteJerichos story about his WrestleMania X8 payday is hilarious. Triple H just casually tells him how much he made and Jericho excused himself, went outside and "blew a fucking gasket" then he went to Vince and Vince wrote him a new check without much fuss. I wish I had that much money.
ReplyDeleteUnderstandable. I almost think there should just be a "Wrestlemania Main Event" / "Wrestlemania Title Match" payout for both guys.
ReplyDeleteOriginally it wasn't even six figures. He made more for the Invasion PPV main event where he was 1/10th of the match.
ReplyDeleteWhat a tease you are, Mr. Keith.
ReplyDeleteIf that really is the case with a 'main event' payoff, I can imagine Punk really would have something to be bitter about. And I noticed Fruity Pebbles are doing a John Cena tie-in - urgh. Maybe if the press pick up on this pornstar thing, Cena will finally have a reason to stop smirking.
Pornstar thing?
ReplyDeleteWell if his wife was using it against him in the divorce to get a larger settlement it might've been cheaper to just pay the porn star to deny it. Or maybe she likes him and doesn't want to make him look bad.
ReplyDeleteIvory told Kayfabe Commentaries that her X-7 payoff was terrible.
ReplyDeletego watch a movie...
ReplyDeleteThat's a ridiculous statement Caliber. Kamala, especially during the territory days, was a guy you can bring in and instantly have him feud with one of your top faces as a monster heel and build that character up. Sure, ultimately he was a JTTS, but he was effective in his role. As an adult, today, you can look back and think he was "one of the absolute worst of all time", but he stuck around for a long ass time and was put into feuds with some big names. He must've done something right.
ReplyDeleteYeah - I don't see how saying Kamala was good at what he did is bad. He was tremendous in the role he played. It didn't call for goodd matches, it called for someone convincing at playing a savage baffled by the world of wrestling and the big cities he wrestled in.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, Khali does what he does well.
Now that's not to say either of them are close to 'greatest ever' or 'greatest gimmicks' ever, but they do what they do well.
By terrible, she still means she earned more in one match than most people earn in six months.
ReplyDeleteWell, given that it was with Chyna, she probably deserved hazard pay.
ReplyDeleteI always remember these two:
ReplyDeleteGorilla is supposedly talking on the phone to Big Bossman when they come back from a match and Heenan looks at Gorilla all freaked out.
Heenan: "Who was that, Bossman? What are you on the phone with him for? You better not be bringing that big sweat hog here!"
Gorilla starts hyping the next match as the camera turns back to Bobby Heenan, he quips "and the Bossman."
(According to HTM, so take this as you want)
ReplyDeleteWM6 Paydays:
Piper: 50K, Brown: 10K. Ouch.
this was the angle that was going on when I put on Superstars for the very first time
ReplyDeleteAndre was a very good worker for such a big man until the early-80s and the toll of injuries.
ReplyDeleteHe obviously draws enough that Vince didn't tell him to go fuck himself.
ReplyDeleteYeah no shit...the fucker still rocks cargos in real life.
