From Prison to Promise

> Just a surprisingly great and refreshing book. Warning: There is not much in the way of wrestling here. But it is an absolute must read. Booker T's journey is just amazing, from statistic of the streets to statistic of HHH at WrestleMania. Sorry, that was harsh. ALL HAIL KING BOOKAH!

  1. It wasn't Triple H's fault. Guys like Booker T don't become World Champion.

    ReplyDelete
  2. And by that you mean "entertainers", right?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Woof. This is a forum where no one can succeed,

    ReplyDelete
  4. Not guys who lay around for 30 seconds after the world's most devastating move. That pedigree was vicious. Especially seeing it came right after Booker draped a leg around Trips throat. Ugh. So bad.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That's obsolete!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Does he spend any time talking about the SHOULDER TURD (I forget if it's his or Stevie Ray's'*)?

    *"That's Stevie Ricahrds!"

    ReplyDelete
  7. You'll have to put it down, since it's hot like a Mexican hot lunch!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Mariano needs a better picture. The floating head is unnerving enough, but that cold sore puts it over the top.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I wonder if he discusses participating in the skit at Survivor Series one year in which Vince dropped an N-bomb.

What a random, incongruous moment that was.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I was utterly shocked when that happened. I still cannot fathom how or why it happened. Perfect moment for the "tell me he did not just say that" bit.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Thanks to Maffew, I will be reading this while listening to Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now" on an endless loop.

    ReplyDelete
  12. you were shocked?

nothing vince does shocks me. im sure he has been saying it for years beforehand.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That word has always been pretty taboo and I definitely didn't ever think Vince would say it on the air. Maybe Booker T(wouldn't have been the first time)

    ReplyDelete
  14. yeah its taboo on tv and what-not, im just not shocked VINCE saying it.

Regardless of how much he loses, he has "fuck you" money and definitely money to think he can say (spear-chucker) without fear of reprisal.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesMarch 23, 2013 at 3:54 AM

I think Scott should just have him post the reviews here, as opposed to Scott posting the email from every single time the guy updates. You know, work for the site, or take your initial plug and move along.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That picture reminded me of the floating head of Harley Race graphic the WWF used when Bobby Heenan talked about Race's injury. That whole scenario made it look like Harley was dying.

    ReplyDelete
  17. "Nigga" (you know, with the A and not nigger), said by either a wigger or an out-of-the-loop old white man in a foolish manner probably isn't considered offensive by the PC police. Not to speak for black people (Fuj, help me out) but they would probably see that and laugh AT Vince.

I thought it was funny as a silly aside and I wasn't shocked at all. They had Triple H fuck a dummy on live TV... no not Steph, a mannequin.

    ReplyDelete
  18. "DAVE THOMAS, WE COMIN' FOR YOU N*GGA!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's Mariano Rivera...hence the name, Mariano saves. If it's not Rivera, it's someone who looks a Hell of a lot like him. I'm more confused by the lack of baseball content on that blog, but the book reviews are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yea, people shamelessly plugging their work gets old.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Also, these reviews aren't that good.

    ReplyDelete
  22. seeing vince say it... i just shook my head.

wasnt disgusted at all. its par the course.

i cant speak for all black people though. but knowin how wrestling is and being more accepting/tolerant... i let it roll.

in my circles, i know whos being racist and who isnt. they know what to say and what not to say. not trying to be all badass about it, im just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  23. ...lol... i didnt wanna be that guy.

i cant do any better though.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I had no idea Booker had a book. There seems to be a glut of wrestling books that slipped under the radar for me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesMarch 23, 2013 at 7:58 AM

Oh, I'm a fan of shameless plugs. I do'em all the time. But I do them at the end of the articles that I write for the site. Every time I update one of my sites I don't post it on the front page of the BoD.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Everyone in this thread likely listens to rap with the " " N Word" " all up in it. Yet acts shocked to hear it on TV from a white person in a lame comedy skit.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesMarch 23, 2013 at 8:02 AM

    I must have missed this.

What on Earth happened? Vince said nigger? Or nigga? What on Earth was the context for this?

  29. Bro, there's a TON of wrestling books out there. WWE and Non-WWE... I "acquired" like 40-50 of them via torrents for my kindle fahr.

    BTW, Love my Kindle Fahr!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Exactly. Everyone here probably loved Django Unchained, too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I got an autographed copy that I just started reading. I like the uncensored WWE books the best.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I sent him a posting invite and he never replied to it. I'm probably gonna have to cut him off pretty soon.

    ReplyDelete
  33. No. Some of us wanted to fuck Vince up for that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesMarch 23, 2013 at 8:40 AM

Good thing you spoke up. I'm sure he was dying to know what "wnyxmcneal" thought. Plus, he'd been getting way too much praise for his reviews, and it's high time we get more people being flat-out jackasses.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My dream commentary team: Booker T, Stevie Ray and Tony Schiavone. Poor Tony's head would explode and it would be glorious.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah, some people get offended by certain things. Everyone gets offended at one thing or another. The difference between the majority of the world and a small percentage of it is that the former ignores what offends them and doesn't let it affect their lives - like rational adults - and the latter lets their self-righteous indignation and outrage run their lives and define them, to the point where they actually feel the need to batter someone over it.

And no, this isn't a race thing. Every race, culture, religion etc. has its own special interest groups which only represent the latter group of their brethren that only want to rip someone to shreds and send them on The Apology Tour (Tracy Morgan, anyone?) in order to gain recognition and the perception of power for themselves.

All of those people can go fuck themselves and their mothers. They have nothing to do but whine, complain and try to get people in trouble.

You know what? Out of the three hours, there's probably 17 minutes per Raw episode that doesn't offend me. It's an insult to peoples' intelligence. People on this site do talk about what shit it is, but you don't see them trying to boycott WWE's sponsors.

As for the Vince "What up, nigga?" thing, it should be obvious to anyone with an IQ over 70 that the bit is:

    1. Vince exchanges pleasantries with Cena, known wigger, and thinks he's gained street cred.
    2. Vince says the word within earshot of Booker T, known black guy, which disgusts him.

It was a racial and cultural bit which was merely a throwaway. It wasn't racist in any way, and I disagree with Fuj when he said that Vince thinks he has the power and money to get away with something "edgy" like that. Vince and WWE are PETRIFIED of offending - and pay close attention - *any special interest group, race or religion that has a tendency of getting publicly traded companies in trouble*. Yes, Vince likes to walk the thin line every so often (necrophilia; Muhammad Hassan) and they have their share of stereotypes (Irish people come to mind), but they're not stupid or brave enough to have a black gimmick wrestler who shucks and jives or a diva who spends most of her time in a kitchen and constantly crashes cars into walls. Keep in mind that if WWE seems to get away with anything edgy, it's because the rest of the world sees them as a travelling circus for rednecks, and even the Muhammad Hassan thing got axed as soon as the timing was wrong.

If anyone thinks that that particular bit was an attempt at goading or daring black people into outrage rather than a stupid throwaway bit that was more about making Vince look out of touch, they're retarded. If you're offended by something the WWE did, well join the queue.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I dunno. As someone who's part-black myself, I'm more offended by Saba fuckin' Simba than this bit.

Although the fact Booker didn't do anything about it kinda bothers me. Give him a Book-End followed by a spinaroonie, brotha!

    ReplyDelete
  38. There's a difference when a black person says it and a white person does. It's not just a static word.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's not really a special thing anymore, so yeah, a lot slips under the radar for me, too. It doesn't help that I lot of the ones I have read over the last few years haven't exactly been stellar.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Haha. You know, there was an interview with Booker when he was promoting his book and the interviewer mentioned that infamous promo. Book said that ever since that day, he's nixed using the n-word in any situation.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I don't mind them but I think a good proof-read would be nice before posting.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well, it would be silly not to use the word in a movie about slavery times but it wasn't the reason that movie was fun/entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks, Caliber! I am glad the most sensitive person on the blog when it comes to criticism spoke up.

His reviews have too many typos, just like your reviews used to. Plus, drag on and on, and I don't really care when he rails against internet "trolls" or talks about his past battles with painkillers. He goes too in-depth into what the book says instead of what is good about the book.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm not up on Eminem but I've never heard him use the n-word in a track.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I do agree that it is annoying how he is using Scott to get hits for his website.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I know some people believe that political correctness is getting out of hand but words actually do hurt. I mean, my grandmother is black and had to face the n-word daily during the Civil Rights era. And many other relatives faced physical and emotional abuse that was viciously punctuated with that word. So when I see a guy like Vince use it as a throwaway joke, yeah, I'm offended. Sorry.

And you use the word "retarded" in your statement, which is disrespectful to those with mental disabilities, people who just want to be loved and accepted. They'll never be considered "normal" or whatever by regular societal standards but yet they continue on, trying to live fulfilling lives. But then people like you use a word like "retarded" as a way to designate something as stupid and although I know you don't mean to denigrate a whole group of people, it's still thoughtless and cruel.

I'm no PC cop or whatever but truthfully, I'm glad that political correctness is out there because it's how people can become aware of disrespectful terms and learn from them as like I said, some words actually can hurt someone worse than you think.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Booker is one of my favourite performers ever. Loved him as a worker in WCW and as a personality in WWE. Isn't he considered the most decorated wrestler ever in WCW with all his title wins?

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's how people from Pittsburgh actually pronounce it

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think using the word "n-word" is far worse than just saying nigger. Obviously, calling people it is still not cool, but when referencing something, please don't fucking use "n-word".

    ReplyDelete
  50. Everyone here rails on Vince because he's "out-of-touch" but when his character does something that's out-of-touch it's classless and disgusting. It's the character Vince McMahon. He's disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Way to support those independent book publishers!

    ReplyDelete
  52. The reason Booker didn't really work as a commentator: never ONCE called someone a fruit-booty.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Vince has more than "fuck you" money... Vince has "fuck me" money. So much money that he'll fuck himself over just to be himself.

    ReplyDelete
  54. ...is what you'd be saying if you were the kind of person that downloaded things from torrent sites. FIFY.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thank you! No disrespect to the writer... I know he must put a lot of time into it and he seems like a nice guy, but they aren't very well written both in grammar/spelling/punctuation, but I just don't find them entertaining. I thought it was just me.

    ReplyDelete
  56. No offense bro' but I think that's a bit of an over reaction... it isn't like he said "This guys book reviews suck gorilla cock... oh an I fucked his mom" he just said they weren't very good... maybe he could have been a little more specific, but I don't think he was being a jackass.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think he, Edge and Jericho are up there for most belts EVER for any wrestler. (Angle and Jeff Hardy might be in the mix too if you count TNA)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Or talk abut yaks

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not to speak for black people (Fuj, help me out) but they would probably see that and laugh AT Vince.

...b/c black people are of a hive mind and what Fuj (or any other black person thinks) is representative of what any other given black person would think.

    OK then.

    ReplyDelete
  60. All I have to say is...

Awful lot of honkies in here

    ReplyDelete
  61. Saba fuckin' Simba

I 1st read that as "Subu fuckin' Simba" and I was all like "Sabu did what now?"

    ReplyDelete
  62. With all the talk of the infamous N-bomb promo, I'm surprised no one has comment edon the fact that Booker T's HoF video packag contains part of that very clip

  63. Vince green-lit a sketch of a guy fucking a corpse. Nothing he does surprises me.

As for the double standard of white people saying nigga and getting fucked up you have to understand the fact that not too long ago I had a white dude say that word to me, and not with the "a" at the end. I mean the "er" version. So he didn't mean it to be playing. A few days later I went to a party of a white friend and he was calling his white friends nigga while his black friends laughed about it. Some people don't feel comfortable with words like that. I hear Spanish cats call themselves by that word more than black people do.

I have a friend who is a personal trainer and he hates when people call him a "ginger" I never used the word and never knew it to be offensive, but it pisses him off.

I have no problem with you saying whatever, just be aware of the fallout that might pop off.

    ReplyDelete
  64. The double standard is not just with that word. I hear people of ethnic backgrounds calling each other derogatory words as a term of endearment but if a person outside of their circle says it they get fucked up.

  68. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesMarch 23, 2013 at 12:32 PM

There, Neal. That's all I wanted. People can not like something all they want, what gets me is when they just say "this sucks" and that's it. It's the incredible lack of intelligence that gets me with crap like that. Especially when I speak out against it and people say I'm "sensitive". No I'm not. I just want people to quit being tactless morons who run their mouths. If you don't like something, explain why. If you don't like something, don't read everything/listen to/watch from said source and complain about it. When people said I had typos, I didn't care. I got an editor. When people said I should start aligning my text to the left, I took it under advisement and did it. I dig constructive criticism, it's how a person get's better.

You're a reporter. What if every time you handed in your piece, your boss simply said "LOL!!! this sucks fag!!"?

    ReplyDelete
  69. walk in my shoes, then judge.

until then, shut the fuck up troll.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesMarch 23, 2013 at 12:34 PM

Nah, see, Neal does this all the time. Honest to God, he's probably posted in 90% of my posts to tell me they suck. He never says why. He never explains why he reads them every time if he hates them.

I mean, why even say "this sucks"? I just don't get that. If you're not gonna like something, put a little thought into it. Only 5 year olds simply offer a "this blows".

    ReplyDelete

  72. Caliber_Winfield_69420BoobiesMarch 23, 2013 at 12:41 PM

How's being a reporter? It's an avenue I've given some thought to from time to time. Is that the field of writing you always wanted to be in? Or is it just what you're doing until you publish the next great American novel or something?

    ReplyDelete
  73. No, you are sensitive. You took your ball and went home after the Cracked.com/DKR review debacle, and your WM 26 review began with that unfunny opening paragraph after you were rightfully derided for your Wrestlemania 25.

Don't forget getting into it with cultstatus because he rightfully pointed out that your "constant" 5-star review claim for your e-book at Amazon was tenuous at best.

If I was Mariano's boss, your last paragraph might have some relevance, but it doesn't. He's being using Scott to plug his book reviews for a while now, and I finally decided to say something about it.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Then consider me thoughtless and cruel if you believe using the word retarded makes me so. On the other hand it makes you sound like a fucking retard. No is being objectified here. No one is being dehumanized or debased. Same with using gay as a perjorative. That makes me thoughtless and cruel? Well fuck it, guess that's what I am.

    Fucking retard.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Uh… we are all of a hive mind. Socially or genetically it makes little difference but yeah… we are all very hive minded. Not sure what your point is.

  77. Just... wow.

No words. And therein lies the basis for racism.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Hang on a sec…

Sorry had to go grab a soapbox for you. Now, proceed.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yelawolf is pretty regular with it I think, too. And Bubba Sparxxx, and I think MGK.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Don't speak of a hive mind like you know what you're talking about... you're not Dougie.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Four words for you: yeah, and so what?

Hate to be the one to break it to you but you do have a hive mind. We just tend to call it something more palatable like "popular opinion."

The fact that you have the exact same opinion on this subject, almost word for word, as millions of other people, is apparently an irony that escapes you.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Racism makes a ton of evolutionary sense.

Being not-racist and non-xenophobic is actually fighting against our basic human nature.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yeah, I mean, I torrent wrestling...and music...and everything. Cause I'm dirt poor, it's either "buy my entertainment legitimately" or "eat". Those are my options.

Sorry Vince, I'll still watch, but don't expect me to pay.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Part of why I was so shocked is because I've been born and raised in Richmond, CA so it's common place for me to hear that word. I've heard it all my life with people saying it in friendly fashion. I just didn't expect it in a wrestling standpoint. I always thought the backlash would be killer.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I had the decency to basically ask Fuj to interject with his opinion from a black guy's perspective, whether it agreed with mine or not. Where you got the idea that this makes him, in my eyes, wholly representative of every black man on Earth is beyond me.

Speaking of hive mind, you're merely regurgitating what a guilty white guy would say to paint another white as a racist.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Buddy your response is very hive minded, do you really not see that?

    ReplyDelete
  87. I get your point, but we'll just have to respectfully agree to disagree on some things.

I'm with you on not paying for anything WWE-related, though.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I know people can still feel sensitive and get offended by things, I'm just pissed at the sort of person who'd proactively try and fuck up a WWE sponsor just because they didn't like what they saw.

    ReplyDelete
  89. If you want something that isn't an indirect statement, here's one: You're a cunt, and you're completely representative of thin-skinned douchebags who get offended by words that are used even without context.

Oh, and as long as we're going to talk for other people here: Hey Fuj, what Lerxst is trying to say is that he'd like to warm and moisten your balls with his mouth.

    ReplyDelete
  90. You didn't know that the Fuj was the resident advisor and expert on Negro thought patterns on the BoD? (let's see THAT fit on a business card.)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Pop culture is like the Borg. Black people as just as fucked up as any other race.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  96. Christian is in that mix also I believe... and just on pure number of title reigns Crash Holly is probably in their.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It makes you sound like an asshole, one going out of his way to find reasons to be a dick and an asshole to people. But feel free to continue this behavior while bemoaning "political correctness" stopping you from being a bigger asshole.

Let me add that you and others who insist on doing this appear ignorant and intellectually lazy. Try harder, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  101. How did they steal your innocence? Was it anything like how Edge's was stolen?

    ReplyDelete
  102. "No is being objectified here."

And that is the real issue here. The objectification of No.

I don't really care about overly sensitive types, or "P.C. Police" as someone like you would probably say.

Nor do I worry for the person who goes out of their way to offend and be an asshole because it makes them feel like they have somehow won their argument by resorting to the kind of name-calling that they should have outgrown by the fifth grade.

But "No" is a word. A real word, not a thing. And I salute you for standing up in its defense. If not now, then future generations will applaud your bravery in defending words, both commonplace and needlessly thoughtless and cruel for the sake of being a hateful jerk.

    Fucking worthless piece of shit.

    ReplyDelete
  104. See what I mean? You, my friend, are a fucking retard.

    ReplyDelete
  105. No, thats fine. I don't mind being ignorant or intellectually lazy when I call my friends retards and fags. Even the gay ones, they don't seem to give a fuck either. In fact, they usually call me a fag too. Its ok, no one is gonna die over this, I assure you.

However, if you want to give me a list of words you think are ok to say, by all means pass them my way. I'll be happy to look it over while I laugh my ass off.

  107. I'll buy stuff from "the little guy" like independent comics or smaller musicians. But I "acquire" from the bigger dogs(WWE, Marvel, DC) The only comics I buy from Marvel and DC are Daredevil and Batman and WWE usually I'll try to buy most events from iTunes or at least a match or two. But yeah WWE is just too expensive most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Is there a chapter about Harlem Heat coming for Hulk Hogan?

    ReplyDelete
  109. I am the author of the article above. And I am going to say this one time, and one time only. All you white dudes can feign ignorance all you want; you can judge all you want; you can stunt all you want. You, all of you, have said that word at one time of your lives. Probably multiple times. I am a white guy who has lived in the inner city for practically the entirety of my life, and I find it hilarious that a bunch of white guys go into the relative merit of the word, whether with the A or ER to end it. That is irrelevant. I live in a community that is primarily populated by Hatians and Cape Verdeans, and that is also populated by a number of African Americans. And let me say this: I have said that word; my family members (Sicilian, so its hypocritical because we have African blood coursing through our veins) use the N word like its a birthright. I hate the word, and I have used it. I have had my ass beat for it, and I have received fist pumps from some good black dudes for using it. But the fact of the matter is this: It is a term of endearment for many black men and women. It is not for the white man to use. PERIOD. If it was, a black friend of yours would have approved it. Odds are, you probably live in a whitebred society where you have never met such a man. I am an Italian man, and, unless you are Italian, I do not want to hear WAP, GOOMBA, GUINEA, GREASEBALL, any of the Italian slurs on your tongue. I get pissed off at Jewish epithets as well. In summation, keep the slurs to your own kind, or people of the persuasion you are talking about who are comfortable with it. Otherwise, you are just ignorant. Keep in mind, the "N" word isn't the worst thing ever. I am an Italian that has been exposed to "Jersey Shore." It is as much the media's doing as any one ignoramus, and I appeal to those who feel to use such hateful words to think twice. I am Italian and hate the Guido stereotype. I live in a primarily black community and I never, ever use the N word. My old man and grandfather? Different generation. But using these words, well, it is at your own judgement, your own volition, your own personal sensor. All racial epithets are ugly in the end. And, in the end, this was not what I wanted the conversation to be about with my review of Booker's book. Toleration people.
