Pathetic. If they couldn't get Bale to do it they should just have come up with a new idea. Affleck has done so much great shit but he always sucks in these huge summer films.
Lets be honest. It's not like Bale was great as Batman. The movies were great, but he was marginal. And Affleck is vastly underrated. I'm willing to reserve judgement.
Affleck is the man. I'm so glad he's kicking major ass during his come back, he completely deserves it. Shit, he'll be the buffest Batman to date, that's for sure. He was ripped to shreds in The Town [which is one of the best movies of the last 10 years].
I always hoped if they used The Riddler in the Nolan films, that they'd get Steve Carell. I think he would have been brilliant.
Also, he didn't destroy Daredevil, the assholes at the studio who insisted Jennifer Gardner get more screen time than things like better character development are the ones who ruined it. If the Director's Cut had been the theatrical release, Daredevil would have certainly not left such a sour taste in people's memories. Although I freely admit that God-awful park-fight scene between Matt & Elektra should have been in either version, and is without a doubt one of the worst scenes in movie history.
With the uproar over this, I'm amazed and appalled by the world. A world falling apart and Affleck is what people go nuts over? Petitioning the White House? Like O'Bama gives a fig what WB does?
...I'm for it, better than a lot of the other names floated about
I STILL remember the day I came home from work and my wife is almost giddy about telling me that Ledger had been announced because she knew it was going to piss me off. "The guy from 10 Things!?! THAT f'n guy!?!" She (loudly) repeated that quote after we walked out of the theater and I wouldn't shut up about how awesome The Joker was.
I was ecstatic when I heard Ledger was going to be The Joker. He was brilliant in Brokeback Mountain and had never given a bad performance in his career. I didn't understand what people had a problem with.
I think if that same casting decision had happened today it would have a lot more support. I think comic book fans understand that having a great actor in there is more important than... whatever issues they had with Heath Ledger.
Firstly, anyone who talks shit about Ben Affleck needs to watch The Town. He not only wrote it but starred in it and was awesome. Same with Good Will Hunting, he wrote it and was great in it.
Second, everyone was saying the same shit about Heath Ledger becoming Joker, and that turned out pretty great didn't it? (Well, ok, maybe not for him)
Wow, I thought Bale was fantastic. The weakest part of his performance was when he was Playboy Bruce Wayne, but even that wasn't too bad. Plus it helped that he looks like Scott Disick, the personification of what BW wanted his playboy persona to be.
I never saw Brokeback and all I could think of Ledger as was the guy in 10 Things I Hate About You and that movie where he was a knight or something with Shannon Sossamon. It was hard to imagine him being the Joker.
To be fair, Ledger at that point had shown serious range as an actor and hadn't ever given a bad performance (IMO). Affleck *is* pretty limited, and has had some atrocious performances.
But I do agree, it's too early to bitch. He might be the perfect fit for what they want this Batman to be, and honestly, it'll be nice to see a different Batman after 3 Bale movies.
I knew he'd be a good Joker bc he played that kind of outlandish show offy type guy in Lords of Dogtown. And there was a lot of Skip Engblom in his Joker.
Haha! I know I'm in the minority here, but I liked the voice! I loved the (relative) realism of the Nolan movies. So it made sense to me that a celebrity who decides to fight crime would purposely disguise his voice.
Fair enough. By 2007 I had seen him in 10 Things (he was fine), Knight's Tale (fine), Monster's Ball (really good), Dogtown (really good), and Brokeback (amazing).
"Holy shit... BEN AFFLECK IS THE NEW BATMAN!!! http://variety.com/2013/film/news/ben-affleck-is-the-new-batman-1200586881/ … Do you know what this means? It means that I've seen Batman naked!!!"
Is it just me or is DC going into their film universe ass-backwards? Granted, just because Marvel did it one way doesn't mean it's the only way to do it right, but I just don't see the logic of taking your two biggest draws, character-wise, and putting them together right away, especially since it will be a "new" Batman.
Where do you go from there? You have the Batman/Superman movie (which, in my opinion, will do big business no matter what because, c'mon, it's Batman/Superman) and do you just automatically jump into JLA? Not that the world is clamoring for an Aquaman film or anything but not having solo movies to establish some personality first will take an idea that's already going to be at the forefront (there's Batman and Superman and everyone else is a scrub) and REALLY beat it into the ground.
I just can't imagine what Avengers would've looked like if they had done Iron Man and then the next movie was Iron Man vs Captain America and then, hey look, here are some other guys.
My problem isn't with Affleck, it is with the entire idea. The point of a World's Finest movie or JLA is to see these different characters you've been introduced to react to each other. The JLA cartoon worked because it had two entire cartoon series to set it up.
What do we have here? ONE film with Superman in his current incarnation and no films for Affleck Batman. Why should I care?
My unpopular but true sentiment if we're all honest with ourselves: Man of Steel sucked anyway so nothing Affleck does will make or break this film if it's made the same way as MoS.
I'd also add that Dark Knight Returns was overrated and that, plus MoS, suggests a downward creative trend so this movie is more than likely doomed with or without Affleck, but that would probably get me downvoted right off this site.
This. His problem at the time wasn't that his performances in these movies was horrible. The problem was overexposure. Thanks to his relationship with J-Lo, the dude was EVERYWHERE in the media. I'd understand completely if people hated me just because I had that much media attention.
No way! His Bruce scenes were essentially a sequel to American Psycho, minus the serial killing. The world can never get enough Patrick Bateman on screen.
Ultimately, I think Ben Affleck as Batman is going to be a moot point that everyone is going to overlook when the finished product is unleashed upon us. The issue here is Zack Snyder. Dawn of the Dead was a fine film. Ever since that piece of work, he hasn't been able to duplicate the success. Watchmen was only OK, and 300, while becoming somewhat of a cult classic, was very flawed. Sucker Punch was shit, and Man of Steel, in my opinion, was a flop. I just don't think he has the chops to compile a narrative that the first on-screen meeting of Superman and Batman deserves. His films are basically style over substance. Affleck will be OK in the end, but I think the framework of the film headed by Snyder is going to make people shake their heads.
I would have been a toddler at the time, so I wouldn't have been around for people freaking out about Keaton, yet I always love reading about the reaction, which always somewhat galls me, since I didn't think (even in the late 80s) that Batman had a reputation among the general public as a dark character. I figured the only frame of reference most casual, non-comic book-reading fans would have had would be the Adam West series, and by the rubric, Keaton would have been an outstanding choice.
What's funny is that his performance ended up taking that 60s sense of camp and couching it in terms of a tortured soul. So yeah, Keaton's Wayne was a little off his rocker, but it was all a part of his facade. Keaton is my favorite Batman, bar none, because I feel like he's the guy who best nailed both sides of the character: both Wayne and the bat.
He was great in stuff like Good Will Hunting and Changing Lanes. He has improved a ton (loved him in Hollywoodland, The Town and Argo), but he was TERRIBLE in Gigli, The Sum of All Fears, Pearl Harbor and my favorite, Raindeer Games. Mind you, bad movies, but he was just as bad.
Man of Steel was CGI overload. I only really liked the more quite Smallville scenes. I wouldn't have minded seeing a Superman movie along the lines of the Smallville scenes and the scenes where he learned how to fly. I could do without the rest of the film, including the Krypton scenes.
This. Snyder is a hack. I also hate the "visionary" corporate double-speak Warner's is trying to brand him with. It's an acknowledgement of his style over substance approach. What's worse, I don't even think he deserves that. It's not as though he's Terry fucking Gilliam. The guy is a glorified music video director. He's on par with Michael Bay.
Like I said, they are bad movies, but he was equally terrible. He's damn good now and I'm reserving judgement on this until we see some footage, but his past transgressions against acting won't go away in a snap no matter how many good movies he makes now. That's just the way it is.
Agreed on the Michael Bay part. Snyder has directed videos for Morrissey and Soul Asylum among others. I have found that movie directors who started as music video directors have trouble translating to the longer form. Hell, if we're compiling a list of horrible directors, let's throw Uwe Boll's name in there. This is the guy that called Michael Bay a "fucking retard". Michael Bay is a genius compared to him.
To be fair, on the other side of the music video directors coin are guys like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, and Michel Gondry. But in general I agree with you. For every one of those guys there are two Bays, Snyders, or Brett Ratners.
I think Watchmen is the best example in film history of a director and movie being mismatched. After reading Watchmen, Snyder is literally last name you would think of to direct a film adaptation. I don't think anyone in Hollywood is less capable of getting what Watchmen is about than Snyder.
I think Affleck will be a fine Bruce Wayne, but I'm not sure about Batman. Perfectly willing to give him a shot though. He's made some awful movies, but he's made some really good ones too. Daredevil had major problems way beyond Affleck. He wasn't good in it, but a good performance wouldn't have saved that movie, I don't think.
I like Affleck. But I'm not going to bother with this one. It's just a desperate attempt to make people like a Superman movie. Superman's so 80's. Get with the times. It's over for Superman. Hollywood can whore out Batman's image but the Nolan movies are the Batman stories I count.
I have to agree with Dougie. Ben Affleck was almost on the outs after Gigli. He took a chance with Hollywoodland and from there, he's been making indie movies. Tom Cruise is closer to Cena, big star, not well liked by everyone, still delivers (mostly).
Not really, that's why there aren't any for good actors. Plus, they're not out of context, I've seen these movies, some of them more than once. He was bad. It's ok to say he was bad in some movies and now he's good. There's no shame in admitting that he's improved A TON at his craft.
Are you the president of the Ben Affleck fan club or something? ;-)
Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger are very good films. Hunt For Red October is a classic, Scottish accent be damned. So, yeah, I stick by my original statement.
I was in high school when the Burton film came out.
Keaton seemed like an odd choice not because people were expecting a 'dark' Batman - but simply because he seemed like an odd choice to be the lead in an action/superhero movie. Keaton was known mainly for comedy at the time - Beetlejuice, Mr. Mom, Johnny Dangerously, etc.
There's not going to be an Aquaman movie....Wonder Woman is a possibility (although she has some baggage due to what a nutcase Martson was). But I've heard that a Flash movie is in the works.
Overall I agree with the concept that you need to introduce the characters. But Batman is such an iconic character, I don't think that will be the issue by itself.
The bigger issue is the hack they've hired to direct it.
This, we can agree on. I'd be really excited if I heard, Batman directed by Ben Affleck. Either way, I'm not passing judgement on his ability to pull off a good or even great Batman, I'm more worried about that hack directing it.
Heat pretty much ended the debate on whether he or deniro was a better actor.
Honestly, I think Affleck took a lot of unnecessary flack for the J-Lo thing. Seems like he was just being dragged along. I saw then on tv in the stands at a Red Sox game at the time and she was glam out the ass. He had sunglasses and a hat on and was clearly trying to hide. And you'll notice that since they broke up, his profile is waaaaay lower.
I've always thought Affleck came off as a cool dude. I pay zero attention to all that Hollywood gossip, so it never bothered me. I was a big fan of Good Will Hunting and him as well, but he just kept picking some of the worst scripts imaginable while his buddy Damon kept hitting them out of the park. Like I said, I still thought he could bring the goods (Changing Lanes) and kept pulling for him. So, I'm happy that he's finally considered a great director and a good actor, so I'm not nervous about this at all as far as he's concerned.
I've enjoyed Affleck's work over the last few years and Argo may have been my favorite movie in recent memory. I know he had a terrible run in the early 2000s but he's rehabbed his cred enough for me to give him a shot.
He obviously is now considered to be a serious director and film-maker. But whether it's fair and accurate or not - I think he probably still has a rep as a lightweight actor.
I think if the movie has a good script and good direction he'll be fine. But with Snyder directing, I'm not counting on that.
Nevermind, I looked it up. Scott Cooper, director of Crazy Heart. I liked that movie, but...that's all he has to his credit as a director. Yeah, this sucks.
It was OK in Begins (which I saw recently again) but got too over the top in TDK and TDKR...the latter you could almost argue he was poking fun at it by then...he even did the hammy "WHEREISHE?!!" or similar again.
I guess maybe we noticed cause Bats talked more in the two sequels.
Why don't we just get Kevin Conroy to dub over Affleck's or whoever's voice from now on and be done with it???
What a mind-boggling decision. Prepare for the dark days of Batman and Robin again, because Affleck is a joke as Batman, just like Clooney was. What's next? The return of Bat-Nipples?
I'm with you; the DC version of Daredevil was pretty aces and exposed everything wrong with the original version (I like Jennifer Garner, but pushing her to the forefront broke that movie). Michael Clarke Duncan also killed it as Kingpin.
This. And this isn't me being a bleeding heart, but I can see how people would look at what happened to Metropolis during the climactic fight and think, this looks too much like 9/11. And there's the controversy of the end of that fight.
I don't have the exact data in front of me, but I want to say that Superman's multiple series are good for the top fifty books every month, rising as high as the top five depending on the creative team (i.e. Superman Unchained by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee right now). Pretty much in the same boat as Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, and the Justice League; though probably the lesser of those franchises. Certainly nothing to indicate it's over for Superman.
do you REALLY want Jennifer Garner as Catwoman? #BenniferSTILLLIVES #AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You do understand the "I hate Caliber" bandwagon is no longer fashionable, right? You're in company with Dougie, and I think CAP LOCKS MAN/LOBSTER head.
It's like you're hanging with Uwe Boll and talking about what a hack that Martin Scorsese is.
The best guy for the role, Bale, has retired from it. The second best candidate is too busy being Ryan Gosling. Out of all the possible third bests, Affleck doesn't really stand out as being a particularly awful choice to me. He's way better than Ted from How I Met Your Mother or Channing Tatum. Mark Wahlberg would have been a funny selection. I would have bought VIP seats for that wreck.
So basically, everyone is acting like he JUST made "Gigli" and "Paycheck," completely ignoring "Argo" and "The Town" and such. Yes, because Bale's pre-Batman career was completely without stuff like "Swing Kids" or "Equilibrium" and Affleck is not allowed to make anything good. Forget the Keaton/Ledger stuff. I remember back in 1999, fanboys were moaning over this unknown Australian who was WAY too tall playing Wolverine and now you can't think of anyone else in the role. Or Brubaker and Waid complaining Chris Evans could never be a belivable Captain America. At least give the guy a damn chance. Oh and for the record, the Director's Cut of "Daredevil" is a damn good movie, MUCH better than the theatrical, which can't be blamed on Affleck, just the poor script/direction. No, instead, tons of fans using his past to bitch and moan and leading a boycott before a single frame is shot. And we wonder why studio execs don't listen to fan concerns?
No, it was awful. It completely missed the point of the book. Rorschach is the easiest example. The guy gets turned from a really pathetic character into the fucking hero. He was never meant to be a a hero let alone the hero of the book. As weird it sounds, Ozymandias is the actual hero of the graphic novel, even as he's also its greatest villain. Rorschach was just meant as a send up of vigilante heroes, not a confirmation of them. But, much like Lobo, fanboys completely missed out on the subtext and latched onto the violence.
I feel like the Libertarian movement has latched onto Ayn Rand far too much and Frank Miller not enough. The Dark Knight Returns has to be pretty near the top of rabid anti-government fantasy fiction, and so very hilarious for every minute of it.
But when's the last time Affleck has done a poor acting job? His performances in Argo, To the Wonder, The Town, Extract, The Company Men, He's Just Not That Into You, and Hollywoodland. The last role that was panned was Jersey Girl 10 years ago. And even then, I don't think he did a poor job; that film's faults really fall on Kevin Smith.
Not really a spin-off. A spin-off would imply that it spun directly out of the Daredevil book. It's more that the TMNT creators were aping the style of Frank Miller's Daredevil book to do their own thing. Inspired by and spinning out of are two entirely different things.
Speaking of DC, this would make Affleck one of the rarities who've been in both a Marvel and DC movie. Only others I can think of at the moment are Ryan Reynolds and Parker Posey (Reynolds in Green Lantern and X-Men Origins, Posey in Super man Returns, and both were in that fucking awful Blade Trinity movie, where Triple H of all people was the best thing about it).
I was with it until I got burned out by the last half-hour. And jesus, I know he's in a fight against another superpowered Kryptonian, BUT COULD YOU PLEASE NOT FUCKING THROW HIM INTO A GODDAMN SKYSCRAPER AND ADD THOUSANDS MORE TO THE CASUALTIES?! I laughed a bit when it's seemingly all over and like 8 people crawl out of the rubble and ash, and the not-female-Jimmy-Olsen is like "He saved us!" Goddamn, even The Avengers made sure to keep New Yorkers alive even while fighting off a whole fucking alien army!
I'm one of five people that liked The Chaperone. Terrible movie, super cliche and cheesy, but I didn't hate it. HHH was decent in it and like you said, he was the best thing in Blade Trinity. Maybe he should star in another movie in a supporting role?
You said it. I can't even bother to be moved one way or the other. I will keep up with production news and watch it when it comes out. This isn't some passion project, it's most likely one the studio suits were pushing for to get a piece of that Avengers pie. I just hope the casting of Ben Affleck is a one-time thing, which would be fine...however, not sure how I feel about possibly having him as Batman for the next 8 or so years. After Superman vs. Batman, can they really even go back to straight up Batman movies? Just very bizarre.
Always on board with him, he seemed like a really good, diverse actor, one who could disappear into The Joker, instead of going the Nicholson route and just having an actor put his persona on the character (I like Nicholson in the role very much, but it's just the usual Nicholson psychopath).
I also think it sucks that Brokeback Mountain is just thought of as "that gay cowboy movie" because it's a legitimately great film, much like how "Titanic" is a pretty spellbinding film but people seem more interested in just making fun of DiCaprio in it.
I love the one guy at the end of the image proclaiming that the movie wasn't going to be DARK because Heath Ledger couldn't possibly have the mentality for it...
Holden: The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about wrestling and share pornography with one another.
Oh yeah, big role, and he was really good. Of course, being HHH, he had to make himself look super strong and take like nine Orc arrows at the end of the movie before he died.
Daredevil is the perfect superhero to have a serialized television show. You don't need heavy special effects like you would with any other hero Marvel has, and you've got the interesting lawyer backstory.
Why don't we just wait and see how this plays out.
ReplyDeletePathetic. If they couldn't get Bale to do it they should just have come up with a new idea. Affleck has done so much great shit but he always sucks in these huge summer films.
ReplyDeleteI just can't get worked up over this. We got our kickass Batman trilogy so I'm good with whatever they decide to do here.

Daredevil. But that had more problems than Affleck.

Using your example: Is any studio willing to eat the loss of Aquaman though? There is no way that could make money.

people were skeptical about Michael Keaton as Batman, and he turned out fine. Anyway, this is probably going to be awful no matter who they cast.

Keaton is my favorite Batman, bar none, because I feel like he's the guy who best nailed both sides of the character: both Wayne and the bat.
The Town was bad ass.
ReplyDeleteHe was great in stuff like Good Will Hunting and Changing Lanes. He has improved a ton (loved him in Hollywoodland, The Town and Argo), but he was TERRIBLE in Gigli, The Sum of All Fears, Pearl Harbor and my favorite, Raindeer Games. Mind you, bad movies, but he was just as bad.
ReplyDeleteHere's a nice "over acting" package on the man:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9Uf9ceZ3ro
No freaking way. He has been terrible at times. Over acting to the max.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9Uf9ceZ3ro
Jack Ryan.
ReplyDeleteISWYDT.
ReplyDeleteMan of Steel was CGI overload. I only really liked the more quite Smallville scenes. I wouldn't have minded seeing a Superman movie along the lines of the Smallville scenes and the scenes where he learned how to fly. I could do without the rest of the film, including the Krypton scenes.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand Snyder. His portrayal of Ozymandias was so bad, I nearly walked out of the theater.
ReplyDeleteRaindeer Games is the only one of those I've seen. The rest just seemed like bad movies.
ReplyDeleteThis.
ReplyDeleteLike I said, they are bad movies, but he was equally terrible. He's damn good now and I'm reserving judgement on this until we see some footage, but his past transgressions against acting won't go away in a snap no matter how many good movies he makes now. That's just the way it is.
ReplyDeleteOh, and Zack Snyder is a hack.
ReplyDeleteTBF, Bryan Singer made a terrible superman movie also. And he made one of the best movies of all time and two very good superhero movies.
ReplyDeleteI thought he was great Wayne because he was obviously fake and follow. Bale's strength is playing sleazeballs and he didn't disappoint.
ReplyDeletethats funny cuz i never heard of ledger before brokeback mountain.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but Ben Affleck isn't a independent movie actor darling. He's always been the John Cena of the movie world
ReplyDeleteOf course you would like this move.
ReplyDeleteWhy did I not see this coming?
Sum of All Fears is a really good movie.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, on the other side of the music video directors coin are guys like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, and Michel Gondry. But in general I agree with you. For every one of those guys there are two Bays, Snyders, or Brett Ratners.
ReplyDeleteKevin Conroy!
ReplyDeleteAffleck has been on fire lately. Although I wish he was directing and it was just a Batman movie. He will be fine.
ReplyDeleteYou didn't underestimate Caliber enough. Keep digging, it goes lower.
ReplyDeleteAre you talking about Dark Knight Returns, the Frank Miller comic or Dark Knight Rises, the movie?
ReplyDeletePaul Dini handpicked him for the role years ago, so he obviously gives his own approval.
ReplyDeletePaul freaking Dini! That tells me someone knows what they are doing.
I think Watchmen is the best example in film history of a director and movie being mismatched. After reading Watchmen, Snyder is literally last name you would think of to direct a film adaptation. I don't think anyone in Hollywood is less capable of getting what Watchmen is about than Snyder.
ReplyDeleteI think Affleck will be a fine Bruce Wayne, but I'm not sure about Batman. Perfectly willing to give him a shot though. He's made some awful movies, but he's made some really good ones too. Daredevil had major problems way beyond Affleck. He wasn't good in it, but a good performance wouldn't have saved that movie, I don't think.
ReplyDeletedoesnt he always place everything in or around boston?
ReplyDelete'alfred, get the bar cah! i just had new ahmah put on it and i need to see how fah i can push it. i left it pahked in the yahd'
I like Affleck. But I'm not going to bother with this one. It's just a desperate attempt to make people like a Superman movie. Superman's so 80's. Get with the times. It's over for Superman. Hollywood can whore out Batman's image but the Nolan movies are the Batman stories I count.
ReplyDeleteGood thing nobody told the people who spent $650 million seeing Man of Steel this summer that it was over for Superman.
ReplyDeleteBoth are shitty and overrated and hilariously self-serious, so as Gorilla Monsoon would say...
ReplyDelete"Pick 'em!"
"Is any studio willing to eat the loss of Aquaman though?"
ReplyDeleteEspecially after Green Lantern bombed.
Lol Spike Jonze!
ReplyDeleteNow that Daredevil is back where he belongs at Marvel Studios they can put him in the new SHIELD series and make him popular again.
ReplyDeleteWould You Stop!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm grading on a curve, because compared to the other 3, it stinks.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you're pretty much completely incorrect on that one.
ReplyDeleteYou're crazy. Compared to the other 3, it's not bad at all. Let's not act like those 3 films are untouchable.
ReplyDeleteYou can do an out of context reel like that for anybody.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Dougie. Ben Affleck was almost on the outs after Gigli. He took a chance with Hollywoodland and from there, he's been making indie movies. Tom Cruise is closer to Cena, big star, not well liked by everyone, still delivers (mostly).
ReplyDeleteNot really, that's why there aren't any for good actors. Plus, they're not out of context, I've seen these movies, some of them more than once. He was bad. It's ok to say he was bad in some movies and now he's good. There's no shame in admitting that he's improved A TON at his craft.
ReplyDeleteAre you the president of the Ben Affleck fan club or something? ;-)
Are you trying to say that all soviet nuclear sub captains don't have scotch accents?
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but since he's made some incredible movies, he deserves more slack. Snyder is killing franchises at every stop.
ReplyDeletePatriot Games and Clear and Present Danger are very good films. Hunt For Red October is a classic, Scottish accent be damned. So, yeah, I stick by my original statement.
ReplyDeleteShuck it, Trebeck.
ReplyDeleteI was in high school when the Burton film came out.
ReplyDeleteKeaton seemed like an odd choice not because people were expecting a 'dark' Batman - but simply because he seemed like an odd choice to be the lead in an action/superhero movie. Keaton was known mainly for comedy at the time - Beetlejuice, Mr. Mom, Johnny Dangerously, etc.
But of course, Keaton wound up nailing it.
You absolutely can. Pitt, Clooney, Ford, Brando. All have lots of crazy footage. Pacino?
ReplyDeleteI'm all in with Pacino as the Ric Flair of acting. Great career, but terrible once he got old and never got out.
ReplyDeleteThere's not going to be an Aquaman movie....Wonder Woman is a possibility (although she has some baggage due to what a nutcase Martson was). But I've heard that a Flash movie is in the works.
ReplyDeleteOverall I agree with the concept that you need to introduce the characters. But Batman is such an iconic character, I don't think that will be the issue by itself.
The bigger issue is the hack they've hired to direct it.
Spike Jonze gets a lifetime pass for directing Being John Malkovic. Of course, he had Charlie Kaufman at his side, but still, he didn't fuck it up.
ReplyDeleteThis, we can agree on. I'd be really excited if I heard, Batman directed by Ben Affleck. Either way, I'm not passing judgement on his ability to pull off a good or even great Batman, I'm more worried about that hack directing it.
ReplyDeleteHeat pretty much ended the debate on whether he or deniro was a better actor.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think Affleck took a lot of unnecessary flack for the J-Lo thing. Seems like he was just being dragged along. I saw then on tv in the stands at a Red Sox game at the time and she was glam out the ass. He had sunglasses and a hat on and was clearly trying to hide. And you'll notice that since they broke up, his profile is waaaaay lower.
I fucking hated every second of that movie. It's absurd! And people have bad hair! Isn't that interesting? Fuck you.
ReplyDeleteI actually rather have Affleck direct The Stand, which he can't do now.
ReplyDeleteI've always thought Affleck came off as a cool dude.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Sometimes, you're the best.
ReplyDeleteThe movie is absurd, brilliantly absurd.
Yeah, I was looking forward to that, but I get that he couldn't pass up a chance of being Batman. That doesn't fall from the tree every day.
ReplyDeleteIf Marvel was smart, they'd use Daredevil to ape Nolan's Batman style. Call it The Man Without Fear.
ReplyDeleteAdaptation's tremendous too. And I give Kaufman a considerable amount of credit for both. Jonze's next flick, Her, looks like it's got potential.
ReplyDeleteConsidering they reboot it every 5 years or so, doing something like The Stand is a lot more rare.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea? or the greatest idea?
ReplyDeleteHe could always come back to The Stand. It's too challenging for a studio to give just any director millions to do it.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed Affleck's work over the last few years and Argo may have been my favorite movie in recent memory. I know he had a terrible run in the early 2000s but he's rehabbed his cred enough for me to give him a shot.
ReplyDeleteThey already hired a new guy to write and direct.
ReplyDeleteHe obviously is now considered to be a serious director and film-maker. But whether it's fair and accurate or not - I think he probably still has a rep as a lightweight actor.
ReplyDeleteI think if the movie has a good script and good direction he'll be fine. But with Snyder directing, I'm not counting on that.
Yeah, this is what I came here to say. I have nothing more to add to this conversation. Peace!
ReplyDeletehuh, hadn't heard. Nothing listed at imdb, do you know who it is?
ReplyDeleteBatman with an abdominal stretch on Superman...he's not going to get a submission from this, he didn't hook the leg all the way.
ReplyDeleteNevermind, I looked it up. Scott Cooper, director of Crazy Heart. I liked that movie, but...that's all he has to his credit as a director. Yeah, this sucks.
ReplyDeleteI'll see that and raise you "Mr. Mom as Batman?"
ReplyDelete/Yes, he was Tim Burton's Batman and not Batman, but still...
Scott Cooper, of Crazy Heart, and Bale's forthcoming Out of the Furnace.
ReplyDeleteApparently Affleck's still going ahead with Live by Night, another Lehane adaptation set in Boston.
Sure it can...if James Cameron directed it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClzRVlMhU2E
ReplyDeleteThis is the trailer for his new movie, looks amazing. So I have some faith.
It was OK in Begins (which I saw recently again) but got too over the top in TDK and TDKR...the latter you could almost argue he was poking fun at it by then...he even did the hammy "WHEREISHE?!!" or similar again.
ReplyDeleteI guess maybe we noticed cause Bats talked more in the two sequels.
ReplyDeleteAnd why hasn't he exactly fizzled out in comics? (Not sure how the sales were from the 90s and up, anyone got info)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you; the DC version of Daredevil was pretty aces and exposed everything wrong with the original version (I like Jennifer Garner, but pushing her to the forefront broke that movie). Michael Clarke Duncan also killed it as Kingpin.
ReplyDeleteTBF, did Boll put Amos 'n' Andy type caricatures in his film?
ReplyDeleteFunny, I thought Watchmen was fine...
ReplyDeleteHey, that's cool you've been to 2015 and seen the movie already!
ReplyDeleteStarring Mandy Moore?
ReplyDeleteThis. And this isn't me being a bleeding heart, but I can see how people would look at what happened to Metropolis during the climactic fight and think, this looks too much like 9/11. And there's the controversy of the end of that fight.
ReplyDeleteThis guy gets it!
ReplyDeleteAnd completely skipped 2006-2012.
ReplyDeleteOther than the Bennifer annoyance, which WAS a decade ago, I don't have an issue with him actually. Never saw either Daredevil either.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he used the time machine these guys did and saw Bollywood Batman instead?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.agonybooth.com/video982_Indian_Superman_1987_Hindi_Movie_Review.aspx
/Sofie Liv = absolutely adorable.
ReplyDeleteNo. But he probably would have interpreted them as conjoined at the mouth and constantly vomiting on each other.
ReplyDeleteIt was.
ReplyDeleteOnly if the writer of the new film is from the streets.
ReplyDeleteThat I support a talented actor getting a role?
ReplyDeleteBurn?
do you REALLY want Jennifer Garner as Catwoman? #BenniferSTILLLIVES #AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBut did he bring back a hoverboard? #BTTF
ReplyDeleteYou do understand the "I hate Caliber" bandwagon is no longer fashionable, right? You're in company with Dougie, and I think CAP LOCKS MAN/LOBSTER head.
ReplyDeleteIt's like you're hanging with Uwe Boll and talking about what a hack that Martin Scorsese is.
and Matt Damon as Superman, with Jason Mews and Kevin Smith as The Joker and The Penguin.
ReplyDeletematt damn as robin
ReplyDeletebut only if he plays it like the matt damon from team america
Calm your sissy ass down, ain't nobody trying to "burn" you.
ReplyDeleteNot everything said against you is an attack, tear down those walls!
ReplyDeleteSo basically, everyone is acting like he JUST made "Gigli" and "Paycheck," completely ignoring "Argo" and "The Town" and such. Yes, because Bale's pre-Batman career was completely without stuff like "Swing Kids" or "Equilibrium" and Affleck is not allowed to make anything good.
ReplyDeleteForget the Keaton/Ledger stuff.
Don't be talking shit on Equilibrium yo.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Equilibrium is a damn good movie.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, did you read this thread? "Everyone" is NOT acting like he just made "Gigli" and "Paycheck".
The majority of people are either ok with the decision or taking a wait and see approach.
Matt Damon as Robin? Nobody has made this joke today!
ReplyDeleteoh yes they did.
ReplyDeleteMATT DAMON
ReplyDelete/F.A.G.
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that it's almost all the exact same dialogue, characterization and shots right? Because you don't seem to.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the Libertarian movement has latched onto Ayn Rand far too much and Frank Miller not enough. The Dark Knight Returns has to be pretty near the top of rabid anti-government fantasy fiction, and so very hilarious for every minute of it.
ReplyDeletei did.
ReplyDeletecause i am a nobody :(
It would be kind of a funny in-joke if they cast Smith in a bit part as Onomatopoeia.
ReplyDeleteBut when's the last time Affleck has done a poor acting job? His performances in Argo, To the Wonder, The Town, Extract, The Company Men, He's Just Not That Into You, and Hollywoodland. The last role that was panned was Jersey Girl 10 years ago. And even then, I don't think he did a poor job; that film's faults really fall on Kevin Smith.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Affleck got so much shit just because of that relationship. It was simply ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteAnd the Psycho remake was pretty much the same, shot for shot, as well as dialogue. That sucked too.
ReplyDeleteYeah didn't you have a face turn? (At least as long as the discussion stays away from music)
ReplyDeleteWhen you said "DC version" I was trying to find out when DC had done a Daredevil movie.
ReplyDeleteNot really a spin-off. A spin-off would imply that it spun directly out of the Daredevil book. It's more that the TMNT creators were aping the style of Frank Miller's Daredevil book to do their own thing. Inspired by and spinning out of are two entirely different things.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of DC, this would make Affleck one of the rarities who've been in both a Marvel and DC movie. Only others I can think of at the moment are Ryan Reynolds and Parker Posey (Reynolds in Green Lantern and X-Men Origins, Posey in Super man Returns, and both were in that fucking awful Blade Trinity movie, where Triple H of all people was the best thing about it).
ReplyDeleteIt's a great comedy, though; watching Vince Vaughn trying to channel Anthony Perkins is funnier than most of his comedies.
ReplyDeleteI was with it until I got burned out by the last half-hour.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of five people that liked The Chaperone. Terrible movie, super cliche and cheesy, but I didn't hate it. HHH was decent in it and like you said, he was the best thing in Blade Trinity. Maybe he should star in another movie in a supporting role?
ReplyDeleteThey're telling stories..
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised he didn't break out in the mainstream; Triple H was fantastic in Fellowship of the Ring.
ReplyDeleteshe is fine.
ReplyDeleteSorry downvoters, Movies just aren't my thing.
ReplyDeleteI like money and vagina more.
ReplyDeleteAlways on board with him, he seemed like a really good, diverse actor, one who could disappear into The Joker, instead of going the Nicholson route and just having an actor put his persona on the character (I like Nicholson in the role very much, but it's just the usual Nicholson psychopath).
ReplyDeleteI also think it sucks that Brokeback Mountain is just thought of as "that gay cowboy movie" because it's a legitimately great film, much like how "Titanic" is a pretty spellbinding film but people seem more interested in just making fun of DiCaprio in it.
I didn't even know Ted from HIMYM was a candidate for the role.
ReplyDeleteOh hey, let's make a Batman/Superman movie.....but Justice League? Naaaaaahhhhh.
ReplyDeleteAlso, isn't it coming out the around the same time Avengers 2 is? That would be an awful business decision if that was the case.
I love the one guy at the end of the image proclaiming that the movie wasn't going to be DARK because Heath Ledger couldn't possibly have the mentality for it...
ReplyDeleteI can't remember the last time I walked out of a Tom Cruise movie and not thinking "that wasn't worth the 10 bucks".
ReplyDeleteC'mon, you're always talking shit. You read that comment, how am I not suppose to read that?
ReplyDeleteWell, to be fair, I always saw myself as a face. I mean, if you notice, only the idiots, or the assholes don't like me.
ReplyDeleteHuh? He was in Fellowship?
ReplyDeleteSo.. Does Batman have any super powers yet, or is he still just a rich dude in a cape?
ReplyDeleteOh. Boring.
Jay: What the fuck is the Internet?
ReplyDeleteHolden: The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about wrestling and share pornography with one another.
I'm really surprised Jesse Baker hasn't shown up yet during this whole thing.
ReplyDeleteMaybe his head exploded.
Never saw it.
ReplyDeleteStrange that you repel both.
ReplyDeleteBAZINGA!
at least my bank account says otherwise... :(
ReplyDeleteI still take her over Yennifer Yopez...
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, big role, and he was really good. Of course, being HHH, he had to make himself look super strong and take like nine Orc arrows at the end of the movie before he died.
ReplyDeleteApplesauce, bitch.
ReplyDeleteThat movie was shit. Gunkata? More like shitkata.
ReplyDeleteTelevision series or GTFO.
ReplyDeleteDaredevil is the perfect superhero to have a serialized television show. You don't need heavy special effects like you would with any other hero Marvel has, and you've got the interesting lawyer backstory.
I still don't understand how the hell they're making that book into a two hour movie. It can't be done.
ReplyDeleteThe "controversy" at the end of that fight also happened in Superman 2.
ReplyDelete
