Funnest matches

I'm wondering what are some of the funnest matches you've ever seen are. Not necessarily the best but matches that were really fun to watch.

Randy Orton vs. Triple H at No Mercy 2007 stands out in my mind. I've never liked their chemistry but they had a hell of a Last Man Standing match here. I think it's a great match(****+) but it's really elevated by how much fun I have watching it. The crowd is with them on every count(it's in Chicago) JR is losing his shit on commentary and Orton wins clean and looks dominant. Really fun match.

Any matches you can think of that aren't ***** classics but stand out in your mind as fun?

Pff, if you can't have fun watching HHH engage Randal Orton in sports entertainment, you're not doing it right.

There's been tons of matches I classify as "entertaining crap", mostly stuff from WCW in the mid-90s like Scotty Flamingo v. Johnny B. Badd in the boxing match, and most famously Roddy Piper v. Adrian Adonis at Wrestlemania III, one of my favorite bad matches of all time.

  1. 'Funnest' is not a word.

  2. THE FIRST POST AND IT RUINS THE FUN OUT OF THE WHOLE THREAD.

    WAY TO GO, SPORT

  3. LOW KI VS AMAZING RED WAY BACK IN ROH WHERE THEY DO THAT CROUCHING TIGER SEQUENCE.

LOW KI VS. DANIELS VS. DANIELSON WAS FUN AS FUCK TOO.

I REMEMBER ROCK VS. EDDIE BEING SUPER FUN TOO.

AND JUST SIN CARA MATCHES IN GENERAL. I HAVE FUN ANTICIPATING HIS FUCK-UPS. HE TOPPED HIMSELF LAST WEEK THO SO I GUESS THE FUN IS OVER.

  4. AND WHO GET FORGET MAXX PAYNE AND CACTUS JACK VS THE NASTIES?

    ReplyDelete
  5. The Rock defending his newly won WWF Title against Shane McMahon in a steel cage on Raw the night after Backlash 2000.

Also, a bunch of stars for this one, but there's no match I can think of "funner" than Austin vs. Dude Love at Over The Edge '98.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Sorry, I don't have the reputation of being the funnest poster on here.

    ReplyDelete
  7. CM Punk and Delirious had a pretty hilarious hour draw in IWA-MS

    ReplyDelete
  8. Shane McMahon vs. Test at Summerslam 1999. It doesn't directly fit your criteria (since it was actually a good match) but man, was it a lot of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Good call with Dude v. Austin. That one pretty much established an entire template for Russo matches for years to come.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Its a really good match so I don't know if that dq's it but the Tyson Kidd vs Daniel Bryan match from an early Saturday morning slam is such a fun little match.

    ReplyDelete
  11. First one that came to mind off the top of my head was Edge and Mick Foley vs. Tommy Dreamer and Terry Funk @ ECW One Night Stand 2006

    ReplyDelete
  12. Christmas is always good for hilarity. Randy Orton and David Otunga put on a Christmas match from a few years ago that was so funny that even Orton started breaking character and laughing after a while.

Highlight: Orton grabbing a tray of cookies, stopping to eat one, and then bashing Otunga with the tray.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You need to learn to be funner!

    ...wait a second.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Is that the one where Bryan does a like 2 minute airplane spin?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Rock versus Triple H with Shane McMahon as Special Guest Referee and the angle going into the match which was whether Stone Cold Steve Austin would show up to be in The Rock's corner from Backlash 2000 is the main moment that got me into wrestling and still holds up as favourite match that's fun to watch. Actually thinking about it most of that card was fun to watch along with the multi-man Hardcore title match and the Lightheavyweight title match between Dean Malenko and Scotty 2 Hotty that saw one of the best finishes ever with Malenko reversing a Superplex into a sick top rope DDT! I'm shocked no one else has attempted to steal that for a finish.

  16. Not fun in the sense of "hilarious," but Savage vs. Flair for the title at WM8 always draws me in. To this day my if I happen to watch that match, my blood boils rooting against Flair, and cheering when Macho wins and "defends the honor" of Elizabeth.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dude you're money as always. Totally the match. Its just a whacky little match for kids and its pretty fun.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Fun: Goldberg/Lesnar at WMXX. In addition to being a "tremendous social experiment"... oh shit, I just misquoted that didn't I?

    ReplyDelete
  19. The eight man tag at No Way Out 1998 was a fun brawl.

    Lesnar/Cena was fun to watch.
Despite the ending, the Empty Arena Match with Foley and Rock was fun as well.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Not the whole match, but the "People's Cam" showing Austin laid out on the announcer's table, panning to the crowd, then panning back to a closeup of a recovered Austin flipping Rock off, and Stunnering Rock, camera, and all on the announcer's table is tremendously entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Rock and Hogan from WrestleMania X-8. It's a bad match, but it sucked me completely in and its still fun to watch today.

HBK/Hogan. Michaels was in rare form that night.

    nothing about delirious is funny

    ReplyDelete
  24. HBKs speech the next night made it even better.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Honestly, one of my favorite moments ever is when they started going nuts for the back rake. That crowd made it 20 times more fun than it had any right to be.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's a good match when 21 years later, I'm still going "Fuck you, Mr.Perfect!" when he interferes at ringside. My favorite fun match is Royal Rumble 1992, just for the greatest Bobby Heenan commentary ever.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Bryan vs Regal from Superstars where they rib Regal and play the "Real Man's Man" theme instead of his usual music is also hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Rock vs Mankind Empty Arena Match.
Howard Finkel announcing "Ladies and gentleman..."
And then The Rock: "That's mild salsa you big baby!" LOL

    ReplyDelete
  29. There's an early Raw match where Doink fought Jeff Jarrett, in the midst of Doink's feud with Lawler. That match is a gold mind of hilariously bad commentary and Wrestlecrap. In fact, that whole feud was tremendous.

    ReplyDelete
  30. No love for Rock n'Sock vs. Evolution from WMXX?

    ReplyDelete
  31. to me, that match is much better than it had any right to be (I think it's a **** match).

    ReplyDelete
  32. Does Angle vs. Shane McMahon count? I've never seen it given less than ***1/2, so it's certainly not considered a bad match by anyone. It's a supremely entertaining match from start to finish. Angle slapping the shit out of Shane and trash talking him, the realistic weapon shots they gave each other, the "I think I broke my tailbone!" Suplex, Angle's relentless pursuit to put Shane through the glass and, knowing he has to pin him inside the ring, how Angle throws Shane's carcass onto a equipment trunk and wheels him back to the ring and lastly, the super Angle Slam to finish things off. It stands as one of the most realistic matches I've ever seen and that's what makes it so much fun.

Sandman w/ concussion vs. Cactus Jack in a Last Man Standing match is one of the most fun, and funniest, too. Cactus repeatedly hits Sandman with weapons, trying to legit KO him.

Any of the matches from Starrcade '91 hold a special place in my heart since I was there, but also because it's my favorite roster in history engaging in (seemingly) random tag matches, which was my favorite type of match back then thanks to the Steiner Bros. Also who doesn't love seeing Buddy Lee Parker get his skull caved in with a plastic stick while Jim Ross freaks out on commentary? "Oh... OH! GOOD GOSH ALMIGHTLY!"

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't classify a single match, but the most fun I ever had watching wrestling was in the front row of the first night of ROH's double-shot in Toronto in 2009. I was right next to "FUCK YOU TODD" guy (pre-gimmick) who is hilarious and the six or so of us in that one corner were riffing the whole time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Havent read the comments yet but Evolution vs Rock n Sock!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. This came up in one of the other threads - but the Rock/Foley/Rikishi/Too Cool vs. HHH/X-Pac/Benoit/Malenko/Saturn 10-man from RAW in (I think) 2000 was an absolute blast to watch, in large part due to how hot the crowd was. I loved watching Malenko do some old-school heel work, and constantly cut-off the faces at *just* the right time.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thats on the short list of my favorite matches ever on free tv

    ReplyDelete
  37. Its hard to figure out what the exact criteria is for this. Does it count since it was also a great match? I don't know, but when flair and rock match off for the first time that was pretty goddamn fun.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I always liked the gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  39. -Owen/Bulldog Vs Steve Austin/????: This was the debut of Dude Love that had been set up with the hilarious "Pick Me Steve" angle with Mankind. Austin's facials expressions when Dude comes out sell the whole thing.

-Triple H Vs Cactus Jack - Another Foley angle. This one is a bit short to be great, but is a whirlwind of a match introduce the Cactus character to the WWF.

-Macho Man Vs La Parka: Remembered this one after listening to DDP on Austin's podcast.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That No Mercy match is probably the only good one-on-one match Trips and Orton ever had together. One of my favourite Last Man Standing matches.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'd still boo Rock for ruining the Nature Boy Elbow.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Rikishi splashing Venis is one of my favourite spots and doesn't get the love it deserves.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Foley - Funk from Raw with Austin on commentary was very fun and a damn fine match.

    ReplyDelete
  44. My favorite part was when Otunga started running up the ramp and Orton threw a present at him and hit him with it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Undertaker's debut Survivor Series match was one I watched a million times.

    ReplyDelete
  46. ECW: Pitbulls Vs Raven and Richards (Double Dog Collar) - This match is so over the top insane you have to love it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. One of the best shows they ever did.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Every time I check that match out on YouTube, all I can think of is: "will crowds ever be this molten lava hot on free TV ever again?"

    ReplyDelete
  49. Definitely. It's only eeked out for me by Austin/HHH vs Benoit/Jericho--my favorite match of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Scott gave it ****1/4 upon review, so it wouldn't classify as a "bad" match, but it's been overlooked ever since it happened because two even BETTER matches took place on the same PPV, but the four-way between Jericho, X-Pac, Guerrero, and Benoit at No Way Out 2001 is the match I never get sick of re-watching. Just some great storytelling and fun spot-fest all rolled into one damned fun match.

    ReplyDelete
  51. One of my favorite 10 matches of all time, it's literally non-stop action the entire time.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I marked the fuck out during that la parka/macho man match. One of my favorite wcw moments.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Bryan rolling into a ball so that Kidd can't put his shoulders to the mat got a genuine laugh from me.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think Scott gave it -***** but I remember watching Wrestlemania VII and just going crazy over that Jake the Snake vs. Martel blindfold match. Haven't watched it in 20 years so I'm not sure that I would be just as excited as I was as a 10 year old

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'm so glad other people remembered and liked that match since it was kind of a throw away. It was just a different kind of match for little kids to go nuts for and it was cool to see them pull it off. Kind of like watching any one of those critically accalimed Disney/ Pixar kid cartoons but with a fight between two guys

    ReplyDelete
  56. Lawler vs Cole. JK

    ReplyDelete
  57. This one! Hilarious until the ending.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was there and I indeed lost it for everything Hogan did. It was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Yup, one of my favourite over-all shows, yet it was only probably the third best over-all show from 2000 alone [behind Royal Rumble and Judgment Day].

    ReplyDelete
  60. The Low Ki/Red sequence is just so awesome to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Funnester.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Any of the Lawler Vs Kaufman matches.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Cactus Jack/Raven vs. Tommy Dreamer/Terry Funk.

This match has absolutely no flow and no psychology, and the only piece of storytelling is that Dreamer doesn't pin Raven. However...

    - Dreamer caves Raven's head in with a VCR and the remote that came with it
    - Foley is wearing his "Uncle Eric" shirt, which Dreamer stretches over his head and bashes it
    - Terry Funk is there

    ReplyDelete
  64. Some of the old WWE Hardcore Championship matches were fun, but the one that stands out for me is RAVEN vs. RHYNO at Backlash 2001. Insane fun from bell to bell culminating in Rhyno running full speed into a shopping cart. Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The ending camera shot is really stupid and brings the match down, but I fucking love the match. So much Rock trash talk and its not obscured by crowd noise for once.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Flair vs Sting on the last Nitro. That match is one of my all time favourites, because its not really great, but its just so fitting that they close the last WCW show. They run through all the familiar spots and you can't help but smile, though it's also quite sad at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  67. "Jack Daniels if you please/Knock this jabroni to his knees!"
Vince: "Rock would never taste alcohol in any other circumstance."

    ReplyDelete
  68. They're trying to phase out the standard DDT so it'll be a long time before we see someone bust out a top-rope DDT. That was a great finish, though.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Call me crazy, but I always thought the Chicago Street Fight from WM13 needed more love, especially since it was on just after Bret/Austin and kept the crowd hot. Anyone who says the show is a one-match show needs to see the Street Fight and realize how underappreciated it is.

    ReplyDelete
  70. "I don't think so, motherfucker" ... Flair's ad lib will never be forgotten by those of us who saw it live.

    ReplyDelete
  71. RR92 is the best one hour of commentary ever. Heenan was just gold that night, and made the whole show. There will never be another commentary duo like Heenan/Monsoon, and no can ever compare.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm with you. That match is a fun, wild brawl that many people forget about. I still remember marking for the lead up with Ahmed calling for reinforcements on Raw and the L.O.D. coming down through the crowd with their shoulder pads on.
