> With ROH possibly folding in the next couple of years, could u see Trips going after their library??
WWE will own everything available when all is said and done, so of course. The money from one DVD release that does reasonably well pays for the minimal cost of the entire library.
Speaking of DVDs, I was checking out the MSG listing, and what a huge disappointment that one is. Shawn v Razor AGAIN? Only 4 pre-Hogan matches? What nostalgic fans are buying this thing for The Hardy Boyz v The Dudley Boyz in 2000?

Speaking of ROH video--the show that my spastic PVR only half taped is finally on the website--review coming latter today
ReplyDeleteYeah the MSG set is one I definitely won't bother with. I did find it neat that Diesel vs. Backlund was on there, but we've seen the footage before, and it's like 3 seconds long.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I checked out the MSG listing the other day. NO BUYS!
ReplyDeleteJumping on the anti-MSG set bandwagon. When they announced the set, I was pretty excited, having been to tons of Garden shows in the late-80s and early-90s. But the match selection leaves a lot to be desired, with too many Raw and PPV matches that we've all seen before.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they'll do a volume 2 to get to some more obscure matches.
ROH folding? Is this a real possibility or just speculation? ROH is nothing close to what it used to be, but I haven't heard anything about Sinclair being disappointed with it. My understanding, and this could be totally wrong, is Sinclair runs it on a shoestring budget and ROH turns a profit. I don't think they'll last forever, but I think it's too early to start digging a space in the graveyard for them.
ReplyDeleteOne, ROH is gonna be ok just coasting. They're a cheap date for Sinclair. And two, listen jack. You old farts from the 80s think you have the market out on nostalgia but some of us very much would have nostalgic memories of Hardyz vs Dudleys. And I'm not all that young even.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this is the first I'm hearing of this too. TNA is clearly circling the bowl, but ROH is in cruise control right now. (smart move, once TNA sinks they can hang back, see who Vince picks up (or should I get in the habit of saying "who Hunter picks up"?) and take the too small/no look/can't work guys.)
ReplyDeletePeople are constantly under the impression ROH is folding--I learned to tune it out about a month into following the company
ReplyDeleteI was shocked there wasn't tons of 70's/backlund stuff on the msg set
ReplyDeleteROH is not in cruise control: They keep losing talent to the WWE, DVD sales are declining, not touring as much and their IPPV's are inconsistent in their ability to broadcast properly.
ReplyDeleteSupposedly SBG does keep it on a strict budget; which makes it difficult for them to ever bring in any real talent. ROH keeps losing their top guys, they are going to just go out of business. You eventually run dry of replacing good talent.
ReplyDeleteThe MGS set is the first one where they clearly went with more modern matches and name appeal as opposed to giving long time wrestling fans what they wanted. I won't be buying it!!!! Maybe I'm being too anal about it, but I was wanting a disc made up of taped house show matches only and nothing from any PPV's. There's a ton of stuff from the mid-to-late 80's that would make a fantastic set. I will be buying the Mid South set, though. Flair-Taylor and Flair-DiBiase make it a must buy for me.
ReplyDeletePlease--show me these DVD sales numbers
ReplyDeleteThe strict budget is why they're fine. TNA has financial commitments above their means (Hogan)
"SBG does keep it on a strict budget; which makes it difficult for them to ever bring in any real talent."
You say this even though the amount of bigger name Japenese talent coming in has gone UP--not down in recent months. WWE and TNA stealing their talent has been hapening since 2003, you just replace them with new no-names who'll be stollen away once they have a name. They did it with Styles, London, Daniels, Punk, Low-Ki, Bryan, James Gibson, Austin Aries, etc.
I haven't seen most of these matches, and my office is set up to watch Blu Rays comfortably, so I bought it. I always thought that if you buy this stuff, you send the message to WWE that they should make more of it, so I'm okay with it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I occasionally like seeing the older stuff, but- and I realize I'm committing wrestling blasphemy here- I don't want to spend $20 on a blurry, grainy, pre-80s set unless the matches are REALLY good and the fans are red hot. I'd love to see more house shows, but I wonder how many of those matches would be fun to watch to the modern audience. (Now feel free to tell me I'm wrong and how there are tons of great Bruno/Backlund stuff from the 70s in MSG.)
I'm not going to argue about pre-Hogan material (I don't have the deep knowledge of the Sammartino era to judge), but I will say the Hardyz/Dudleyz match was awesome, and arguably as influential as the Hardyz/E&C Runnels match that started that ball rolling.
ReplyDeleteWhen RoH goes (hopefully no time soon) I'll be first in line for those DBry and Punk "unreleased/from the vault" dvd sets.
ReplyDeleteWas very disappointed with the MSG listing. Skipping that one and the Goldberg one. The Mid South blu ray and the last ECW one will be my last wwe dvd/bd purchases for the year.
THANK YOU SCOTT.
ReplyDeleteI was bitching about the shitty job they did selecting matcher earlier, people were telling, "oh there are only so many matches..."
Seriously?
It's on at least a couple of other DVDs, including the Royal Rumble 2000 DVD or Royal Rumble Box set.
ReplyDeleteSomeone posted this week WWE isn't interested in picking anyone up from TNA; they feel they have talent just as good in developmental.
ReplyDeleteOf course I'd still say Bully Ray, Jeff Hardy (even though I don't see it) and Angle get picked up.
Then buy Twist of Fate: The Matt and Jeff Hardy story.... or a Royal Rumble anthology.
ReplyDeleteThey just need to mix it up a lot better on these DVDs. There's a ton of stuff on there that doesn't need to be released for the fourth time.
Agreed but not my point.
ReplyDeleteROH already has DVD compilations on Punk and Danielson, so no need to wait for a wwe release if that's something you'd like to watch.
ReplyDeleteThey have like 3 compilations for both guys
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's ROH's biggest issue. Look at the clowns that were on this past weeks show. If anyone should be hoping for TNA to go under, it's ROH.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they'd jump at the chance to bring Hardy back, provided he's clean (which he seems to be), but no fucking way are they touching Angle with a 10 foot pole, and with good reason. Outside of D-Von and Bubba I doubt they want anyone else. The KO's have a better shot than any of the male workers.
ReplyDeleteI liked this week's show. Vinny Shittytats, a poor man's Umaga and two bearded guys in the opener, Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt tearing it up in the main.....ROH will be fine.
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't think it was a bad show, though that Kongo guy and the one that the Bryan beard going on were pretty crappy. Just try to spread out the jobbers a bit more, there were more jobbers than full timers on this show.
ReplyDeleteI know. I just like giving Vince my money. Plus I don't want hours of RoH, just 4-5 matches top and the rest can be WWE stuff I haven't seen or only saw once.

ReplyDeletefirst disqus double posted so I deleted one post. When I deleted one, both were deleted. So I made a new post. But when I refresh the page this first comment came under guest. looks like a conspiracy to me...
