Are we still grounded?

Or if we all promise to be adults, can we post pictures and hilarious gifs?

Nope.  Because not everyone can be adults and I have no desire to risk angering the gods of Google.  Plus they make the pages load slow as shit on my mobile devices and it drove me crazy.  There's many fine places where you can post and share such material, and the BOD is not one of them, sorry.

Being a married guy, I constantly find myself checking the BoD while sitting next to Mrs. Stranger in bed. She is very interested in my comments or thoughts and watches every word I type. She is also very judgmental on everything YOU leave behind. So, I am going to have to start typing in code in order to give her the idea that everything is good and clean. I have too much respect for my dear Mrs. to take part in any juvenile comments and references to body parts. For example: if the topic is one of Meekin's QOTD's about existentialism, my response will be "Check out the hooters on this one". I think I can get away with that.

Is this the set-up for a ridiculous "Odd Couple" type show on the new WWE Network?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Let's compare apples to apples, though. If Daniel Bryan missed two months of time and stayed off TV, then came back and won the WHC at a PPV, wouldn't you expect a ratings increase for the next night's Raw? I would.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Everyone has a type, dude.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I dont put much stock in ratings now a days. In the big picture, does it really matter if Raw does 4.15, 3.80, 4.6, etc., in a particular week? As long as they stay at a particular level, theyll get the same amount of afveryising dollars, USA will be happy, and life will go on as normal. It seems that its just a residual "newstory" item after the Monday Night Wars. Itll only return to be a significant new item if there is legit #2 competition or a prolonged trend that lies outside the norm (consistent string of 3 million, 6 million, etc.)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, his kid did die from an overdose

    ReplyDelete
  51. 1. Yeah. This is a pretty small market game, and meanwhile Raw finally had a WWE champion, Cena was back and there was all the fallout from Hell in a Cell. I'm wondering if they'll just ignore the cheers the DBry got after the HBK attack. I'm guessing that yes. Yes they will.
    2. Fine. I'm hoping Punk stays in his little sub-universe and brings DBry with him because Big Show vs. Orton is about the most boring feud I can think of. Punk/Dbry might be fun for a bit. Though I would have thought that the Wyatts would have been an obvious choice as a first feud for the Rhodes Brothers.
    3. It's not fair to Flair that he has to live with Joe Gomez.
    4. Oh my god, nobody cares.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think we have a legit way to find out if Cena is a TV draw and it will occur by looking at the ratings for Smackdown.

  55. Honestly, no. I would not expect that. You really would? I'm curious why you feel that way. At this point, the WHC changing hands does not boost casual interest. Daniel Bryan, as much as I love him as a performer, does not boost casual interest. John Cena does, and it's undeniable.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  60. Why is that the "legit way" to find out if Cena is a draw? Just because you say it is? Wouldn't the ratings not going up for Smackdown just reflect more on the fact that it's a show on a niche cable channel on a Friday night at 8pm? Either way, I'd be shocked if those ratings didn't go up this week too, with Cena taking a more prominent role on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Bingo. The ratings don't matter at all unless they go below what they (USA/WWE) promised advertisers.

The ratings have 0 effect on the WWE's bottom line. Buyrates, merchandising and live events are all far more important -- and far better indicators of the business.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Yes, I really would. It's less about the WHC and more about the ratings pop that "returning superstar" shows generally get. Although. The WHC title win (even more so for Bryan, truthfully) would just be icing on the cake. I'm not a "Nielsen family," but I've been tuned out lately, due to being completely discouraged with the main-event storyline(s). I can't imagine I'm the only one. If Bryan went out for a while, then was coming off a WHC win on a PPV in his return match, I'd absolutely be watching that Monday night. Again though, I do recognize that the ratings probably don't reflect my tastes.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think your tastes (like mine) reflect those of the more traditional wrestling fan. I feel like the ratings reflect the size of the traditional wrestling fanbase for the most part, but the casual interest is what draws the bigger numbers, and at this point it's basically Lesnar, Rock and Cena who pop the numbers any more. I get just as excited for a returning superstar as anybody, but I don't think a Bryan return, or a Kane return, or a Big Show return, is enough for casual viewers to tune back in.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Why? Why would you possibly think that people would tune back in because Daniel Bryan is back and won a secondary belt. I mean, I'm a Daniel Bryan fan, but you're way off here Dunkin Donuts Guy.

  66. YankeesHoganTripleHFanOctober 30, 2013 at 11:52 AM

Dammit now I want to watch Rocky III.

    ReplyDelete
  67. It's not "the" legit way, it's "a" legit way. If he starts appearing on Smackdown and he's the only real change on a night which doesn't have any real competition it would be a strong indicator that he himself is a big TV draw.

It's hard to say that his return is the sole reason for the better Nielson ratings on Raw. MNF was a boring game, HBK had some splaining to do, Two new champions were crowned at HiTC, one of which was after a four month build up and the other (admittedly Cena) was a star who'd been gone for two months.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The lack of a competitive #2 promotion, and the WWE has reprogrammed us to think the WWE brand is the draw now. Nobody now will significantly move the needle...guys like Cena, Rock, Taker will make small incremental increases but nothing like Hogan or Austin back in the day. As long as this is the wrestling industries "infrastructure" so to speak, well never see a huge business explosion or a huge drop in ratings. If a red hot guy comes along, WWE will slowly ingratiate him into being a "WWE guy" thats no bigger then the product.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I see your point, may even agree with it, but I don't care for the examples. If Kane and Big Show came back, I can't imagine ANYONE would give a shit. Regardless of how they're being booked these days, you can't tell me that those guys' popularity is in the same realm as Bryan's.

    ReplyDelete
  70. This was the highest rating since the Monday Night Football season began. Who was headlining RAWs this whole time? NOT John Cena. Cena comes back, and it's the biggest rating since before the NFL season began. I would say that's a very good indicator of the bump. Michaels has been on RAW for the past 3 weeks, and ratings weren't good then either. I doubt the casual fan really cared why he kicked Bryan in the face at HIAC, when the casual fan didn't really care about Bryan for the past 2 months.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Definitely not Kane, but Big Show right now is about as over as he's ever been. Depending on the crowd, he's getting pops just as big as Bryan's, at this point. If he keeps at this level for a while, his return would be an event. Still not enough for the casual fan to care about, but that's my point. Bryan is not the guy that casual fans care about. Punk became that guy after the "Pipebomb," and he brought a lot of fans back into caring about wrestling, in mainstream media, and myself included. Bryan hasn't done that. Again, I am a huge Bryan fan, I'm just calling it how I see it.

  77. It may well have all been Cena. I don't have that data. However there was a lot going on Raw. There is nothing on Smackdown which would be that different except for Cena. Therefor if the ratings popped you'd have a much stronger indicator for Cena's television drawing power.

I'm not saying he doesn't push merch or draw for house shows. I'm not saying that he doesn't draw ratings on Raw. I'm saying that I don't know and neither do you and unless you have an excel spreadsheet and some VORP numbers, you're going off your gut.

  82. On the various World Class DVDs, they make the point that David was always going to be the guy to beat Flair, he was the better wrestler, better on the mic and more dependable. Kerry only got the win because of the money in getting the belt after David's death and he only lasted three weeks because the NWA knew a guy with his massive drug habit wasn't the right pick. So, no, I don't think Vince would have had much of a hard choice between Hogan and Kerry, even in his heyday, Kerry couldn't quite match Hogan's draw power or ability to hang the main event.

  89. I used to believe that David was the better wrestler than Kerry until I started watching more Kerry stuff. He had a much better ring generalship, he understood how to be a babyface from the timing of his comebacks and knowing how to draw in his fans until they couldn't take anymore.

And I never thought Kerry was bad on the mic. He was a face, he talked like the baby faces talked in the early 80s. David stunk on the mic.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I tentatively disagree. This is obviously a guess because I don't know WWE booking plans but it seems like they aren't very good at calling audibles and changing plans long-term. Using Punk, Daniel Bryan, and Cesaro as examples. Punk got over and the initial angle with Cena was white hot but they didn't really know where to go with it (admittedly, this was in part because Nash wasn't cleared to wrestle) and fumbled it and worked their way back around to integrate Punk in to the main event below Cena and Rock. With Daniel Bryan he was over and they didn't want to move away from their plans so they looped back around this summer and after Summerslam they didn't really seem to know where to go. Look at Cesaro, he's clearly over but they don't want to break plans so they'll come around in two or three months and push him.

I think you're right about guys making small, incremental increases. But I don't think the WWE purposely homogenizes (for lack of a better word) the product. Look at the Attitude Era, the main event program was good and made up for the wrestling that was lacking but there was always a story. During the Summer of Punk the main event angle was good but the rest of the card was BORING. I think if the Summer of Punk had happened this past Summer it would have done more to move the needle.

  96. You know, I hear people say all the time that Vince might have built everything around Kerry instead of Hogan....and I've never understood why people think that's a possibility. I get that Kerry could have been a huge star under Vince's leadership, but I just do not think it's all realistic to expect that Vince ever would have gotten Kerry.

Kerry was working FOR HIS FATHER. No way he leaves WCCW as long as his family is running the promotion. There's a reason he didn't show up in the WWF until 1990, after Fritz sold the promotion to Jerry Jarrett.

  102. The WWE views Punk and Bryan as main event level place holders with a certain ceiling, like Foley, Kane (98ish) Big Show etc. Theyll plug them into a main event angle if there is nothing else to do, or if its to sacrifice them for another feud. I could be wrong but Bryans getting sacrificed to HHH so Cena/HHH has a bigger payoff. Just like how Foley was built up then sacrificed to Rock so Rock vs Austin was a biggee money match.

It's not that theyre not good at changing on the fly, its just that they know what they want to sell and wont deviate from it. Look at how well The Rocks 3 year run was laid out, they got as much out of him, money wise as possible.

Another great point on the various WCCW DVDs is that the territory was so hot, if they'd gone national with a TV deal, they'd have taken off but Fritz refused, thinking "Texas is big enough" and such. When they're alone, she's just Paula Gordon, a girl from the midwest trying to make it Hollywood, only she got confused and moved to Hollywood Florida. She can't afford to move again.

  133. This is an interesting point. To play devil's advocate (great pinball game!), Punk's storyline put almost all of the heat on a non-wrestler and did absolutely no favors for two wrestlers that could have used a rub. It is funny that Punk doesn't get any backlash whatsoever. And I'm a huge Punk fan.

  134. Its always funny to see old guys see someone become more popular than them and do everything they can kill their push and ruin their popularity. Its basically what HHH has done to Punk, Bryan etc... its ok big guy, you did some things, you had some fun... but its time to let go.

  136. Curtis Axel was buried from the start, when he celebrated a win over Trips because he had a bout of PCS or whatever that was. They were merely avatars for someone else that works limited dates. It's a tad different than heat leeching two main eventers at the same time.

I admit, you have gotten some yuks around here in your brief stay, but I wouldnt consider you a 4 tool poster.

    Lets break it down...

Like I said you may have gotten some giggles being here. Nothing ground breaking but funny nonetheless...
But are you charismatic enough to take a polar opposite stance from the hivemind?
Where is the wrestling knowledge and/or acumen?
And most importantly, who have you feuded with here? You cant even think of being a top guy without going a few rounds with dougie or phrederic.

I have no problem taking you under my wing in a bruno/larry type of deal... but seriously, you have hit your ceiling.

the way, because that was the one stip where you could count on it
paying off if you got behind a guy who won it, and now that is no longer
    the case."

I guess? But the thing is, the person with the case ALWAYS winning is kind of predictable. The fact that Sandow was allowed to have a good match with Cena is still good for him in the long run, and will do favors for him in the future.

It's better if you think of the briefcase as a threat instead of a guaranteed title reign. I liked the idea of it being an ambush cash-in, but still a lengthy match. I don't like the idea that all ambush cash-ins have to end within a minute or so.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the entire debacle take place over, like, a week?

Kennedy was thought to be injured badly, they moved the briefcase to Edge, Edge cashed it in, and then it was discovered that Kennedy's injury wasn't nearly as bad as originally thought... I could have sworn that all of that happened over the course of about five days. If so, it's ridiculous to think that the company panicked so much and showed so little foresight.

David was gonna be the guy because he was the one that traveled the most to get his name out there. Im sure it was with fritz approval but he went to armarillo and cwf to work heel right before he big push.

He also worked st louis as a face when the nwa had their big shows against harley.

They all had the "aw shucks" babyface promo, but david worked heel early and traveled more thats why I always pointed at david being the guy. He wasnt gonna be THE MAN cuz the huge payoffs were working against flair and mid atlantic was where the money was. and wccw notoriously were shit payoffs if you werent working agsinst the von erichs (citing htm and cornette shoots as well reading jim cornettes book with the box office)

David von erich becoming the man in 84 for a long reign would have killed the nwa once wccw collapsed in 86-87.

Granted the nwa was doa by 88, but putting the centerpiece of the nwa in dallas would have hurried it up sooner

  150. Ok, so, despite all of my upset over the main-event picture (Orton/Show? Seriously?), I actually thought the rest of the show was really good, and that some interesting story-lines were started.

Sandow had a great showing last night, proving that he can hang both in the ring and on the mic with their top star, and displaying an incredible viciousness that all true main-event heels need to be able to show at times. A lot of people think he got buried, but I disagree - no way should Sandow have won the title at this point, he'd be an absolute lame-duck champion; instead, he showed that, with a few character tweaks (because, let's face it, his current character is more of a goofy mid-card act), he has what it takes to be a big player.

Dissension amongst the "Shield" members is interesting; I really don't want to see them break up yet, I think they still have a lot of mileage, but I'll have more emotional involvement in them breaking up than in most of the teams/stables they break up prematurely. Also, the optimist in me thinks that this could actually be foreshadowing them being MORE dominant, winning back the titles and maybe adding another member.

The Bryan/Shawn segment was fantastic. Within the context of this being Bryan's consolation prize for being moved out of the title picture, yeah, it's upsetting and aggravating, but as a stand-alone piece, it was incredible. NOBODY does self-righteousness like Shawn, he's just the most amazingly egotistical prick, and I find his heel performance absolutely fascinating. That said, the other thing that I was really excited about was seeing Bryan actually being pissed off for a change. One thing that I think hasn't been mentioned over the last few months is that, to some degree, it seemed like Bryan was becoming a bit "Cenatized" - he'd have a giant grin on his face when confronting Trips or Orton, he'd make lots of goofy sarcastic jokes, etc. He was very rarely angry. Now, FINALLY, we got some real fire from him. Great segment.

Kane unmasking for Stephanie... I'm actually going to "let it play out and see where it goes". It was so out-of-nowhere that I can't even really speculate the motivations or direction it's going. I'm intrigued.

The Wyatts attacking Punk and Bryan. Again, it's a shame to see Bryan "demoted", but at the same time, I'm very interested in the actual program. Punk, Bryan, and Bray all working the mic together? Fantastic. The once-promising stable FINALLY being given something meaty to sink their teeth into? Also great. Shame that it has to come at the expense of Bryan's main-event run, but I have no doubt that it will provide for some very entertaining programming.

The Real Americans beating The Rhodes brothers? I know that a lot of people don't like Jack Swagger, but I think he's a decent wrestler, and the team (gimmick and ring-work) is really good. Odd that it seems to have been cut out of the "Hulu" version.

And, finally, the elephant in the room, Orton vs. Big Show main-eventing a PPV in 2013. Up until this segment, this was a really good episode, but... holy shit, WHY? And I say that as a guy that actually LIKES Show. I think he's very underrated both in the ring and on the mic, but even *I* recognize the fact that he's a very good SUPPORTING player, not a main-eventer. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Ha. This made me cackle for some reason.

  152. That's because he hasn't really been wrestling. Once the angle pays off and he lumbers around the ring like he always does, interest in him will probably sink.

  158. Vince was promoting the Von Erichs in early '80s on his own program when they worked for a competitor. There's a clip of it in the WCCW documentary. If he had Von Erich as an option, or the entire group, he probably would have thought long and hard about it.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Hogan was so far above everyone else. It's no question

    ReplyDelete
  160. This match actually sets up Freebirds/Von Erichs. Since Neely is favoring Flair in this match, World Class puts the then popular Michael Hayes in as ref in the rematch with Terry Gordy guarding the cage door. Hayes hits Flair, Kerry won't take the win that way, Hayes walks out and Gordy slams the door in Kerry's face.

In fact, Neely had so much heat from this match, in 1986 when Kerry and Kevin faced Chris Adams and Gino Hernandez in the hair vs hair match, Chris and Gino named Neely as the referee.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Yeah that may be part of it, well as much as I love Punk and Bryan, you also have to rotate guys in and out of the main event. I personally would keep them in and move Orton and Cena out, but obviously they feel different.

    ReplyDelete
  162. yeah, it's not as if there were rumors that people were ticked at Ryback recently or anything.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Has Vince ever publically stated he could have gone national without Hogan? I'm pretty sure even he realizes it couldn't have been done without Hulk. Sure, the WWF would have continued without the mainstream boom but it would have remained a primarily North East promotion.

  167. I think that was under Vince's dad, not Vince. The territories still worked together and exchanged talent in the early 80's. There are clips of the Road Warriors appearing on Crockett TV while still AWA tag champs, that doesn't mean Crockett wanted to build his promotion around Hawk. Sure, the WWF probably would have liked to have them, but they weren't Hogan. It's a moot point because there's no chance in hell they were ever going to leave WCCW.
