Hmmm, I don't understand the finish. It *looked* like the AA, but Cena didn't turn to the hard camera and make a stupid face before delivering the move.
It's amazing just how out-of-his-league Cena was at this point, with the company putting him Jericho, Angle, and Shawn in just a few months. If you want to know when the backlash started, it was right here, during the transition from the Jericho feud to the Angle feud, and all of the horrible booking that surrounded it.
What's ALSO amazing, however, is how much he had improved just a few months later. In 2006, he was becoming a good worker, and by 2007, he was having great matches on a consistent basis.
It was not only the booking, but that was when his character was being made safer. Before he came to Raw, the character was more edgy. After that, they started to sand down the rough corners, which made him a boring sell-out/hypocrite to those who like edgy characters. Those fans tend to dislike/distrust the smiling Adonis babyface. See Hogan during the early-mid 90s for another example.

ReplyDeleteThat was back when it was the FU, as in "FU hard camera, I'll hit this move wherever I want!"
ReplyDeleteIf they could possibly get Angle on a Brock-style very limited schedule, it would be awesome. I don't see him lasting any longer than that.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't quite know the main event style back then.
ReplyDeletehahahahahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteTHREADJACK!~
ReplyDeleteBest defenestration in wrestling: Michaels/Jannetty or Angle/Shane?

Heidenreich/Cole.
ReplyDeleteThat's what "defenestration" means, right?
Cole went through a window?
ReplyDeleteIt was meant to be a joke. Like, I dunno, "defensive penetration" or something.
ReplyDeleteCo-signed.

ReplyDeleteThat's true, as well.
