Promo of the Day -- Rock/Austin 11/12/01

From the go-home RAW heading into Survivor Series 2001. This is still one of my favorite promos to date, with an almost surreal "house show" feel that you don't see much nowadays; you give John Cena a mic and 15 minutes to fill and you're going to end up with weak self-deprecation and Call of Duty jokes. WWE also put this up on their own channel but I prefer the unbleeped version, you SSSS---SSSS---SSSSUMMMMMBITCH!
ZOMG, I so wish Rock would do Austin's podcast for a 16 part series.  It would be EPIC.

Comments

  1. That Brian thing is weird. I thought Peter Capaldi wasn't supposed to debut 'til Christmas?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Once the show started to have more of a serious tone to it, that's when I stopped watching.

    ReplyDelete
  3. "That make you feel any better?"

    "I feel like crap.

    Amazing.

Then again this segment got "WHAT?" over.

    It can burn in hell.

FEAR NOT, KEITH. APPARENTLY AUSTIN SENT OUT A TWEET TO THE ROCK INVITING HIM FOR AN INTERVIEW

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yeah I stopped watching the show a while back myself, notsomuch that it was terrible or anything, but more that I just got tired of it. It's been on the air now for 8 years (not even counting the original few years it was on), so much like anything else it was bound to get old after a while. But apparently, much like The Simpsons, there is still an audience for it. Hell, South Park has been on since 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I love this promo and fortunately got to see it live a few days earlier after the old Insurextion UK only PPV (after it stopped airing). The original promo went over 25 mins with lots more singing and swearing... I was so chuffed too see a version of it get on Raw, a truly great moment.

SOUTH PARK IS STILL AWESOME THO

    ReplyDelete
  8. Remember when WWE pushed so hard to make HHH Thor? Good times, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Austin's goatee was just tremendous here.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Planning to get down votes for this but even though I liked Thor 2, I didn't think it was as good as the first one story wise. The beginning felt rushed, the final battle seemed cluttered and both Tom and Kat had at least one scene where the jokes they said felt somewhat forced. However the Loki ending was great and speaking of that, there is an online petition going on to try and give him his own film. One another note there are 2 end credit scenes in the film. One after the initial round, and one when they are all over.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Even now it's starting to lose some of its touch.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I had to watch after hearing about it in the SS thread, but WOW, that show is just beyond horrible. Just the start of it with the Native Americans was wretched and it was all downhill from there.

How can the same guy give us American Dad and then give us...THIS?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I replaced Family Guy with Regular Show and I can watch it in front of the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thor 1 is a better movie, Thor 2 is a more entertaining one, IMO.

    I love Regular Show.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm so glad Austin's podcast has caught on, the dude is just entertaining.

  17. Porn-Peddling Jef VinsonNovember 24, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Not really a die hard Family Guy fan but I payed attention to this episode. Heard it had the net spazzing out. Also liked the American Dad episode too. (Side note Jeff REALLY needs to come back from outer space on some World War Hulk shit.)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah, I was pretty surprised when those closing credits came on and the status quo had not yet been returned to. It was a jokingly dramatic episode (much like Southpark's "Stan's Cup") so I was imagining they were just playing this as a one off and that Brian would be back next week, but word around the internet is that this has been the plan for sometime--Brian is really gone and Vinnie is the family's new dog. It's a weird decision since the Brian/Stewie episodes have consistently been the shows saving grace (I know it's a point of contention, but I thought the bank vault episode was fantastic), but I commend them for actually rolling the dice like this to freshen up the show. I suppose if this is a miscalculation, they can always do an episode where Stewie fixes up the time machine and brings Brian back.

I'm not really seeing how Vinnie will fit in though; it doesn't exactly seem like the most dynamic character. The charm of Brian was the fact that he was a pretentious dog. One moment he's bragging about his Prius, the next he's rolling around in a dead animal (and hating himself for it). Vinnie had his moments in tonight's episode (my favorite being the "Would you like another beer?/No, I would love another beer." exchange with Peter) but I can't imagine the Italian stereotype character comparing to the possibilities Brian's character held.

    ReplyDelete
  19. American Dad is so far above and beyond FG in terms of quality, I wonder why Seth MacFarlane even bothers with the latter anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  20. You know, your right, both are good in there own ways, Thor was good for the story, but I have no problem saying that Thor 2 is a great pop corn flick.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree with that. Family Guy just throw random jokes in the show for the sake of it. American Dad allows the jokes to work in with the story.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I enjoyed Thor 2, but it meandered at times. They could've cut out the Portman's annoying sidekick altogether and the movie would've been better. In fact, I wish they would focus less on earth.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Loki's getting his own comic, as they are ditching "Kid Loki" (a non-sensical and convoluted storyline if there ever was one) to turn him into a transgender secret agent type.

Brian may be back; episode synopsises for the rest of the season says that there is at least one Brian centric episode in the works.

Also, the Broncos/Patriots was a crazy fucking game with a bullshit ending.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I only watch Family Guy for Stewie and Brian.

And Wes Welker blowing it under pressure? Imagine that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well, apparently the episode guide has some future episodes with Brian in them, at least according to Entertainment Weekly:

"An unnamed episode will guest star Maya Rudolph as a runner whom Brian falls for and Glenn Howerton as the publisher of a children's book written by Joe. The episode is slated to air in the fall of 2014."

    http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/10/29/family-guy-maya-rudolph-glenn-howerton/

    ReplyDelete
  26. So maybe this Vinny thing is just for one season?

    ReplyDelete
  27. The part that really bugged me in the film was that during the final fight, Thor had to take the subway to get back to the battle site. I know that it was played for laugh and all but when he shows up at the proper place and he's too late, it makes me think he should have just flown.

    ReplyDelete
  28. They should have killed off Chris personally. Especially since Chris has always been a non-entity and the few times he's had an episode, they have been god-awful as fuck.....

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thor can't fly without his hammer and he didn't have it with him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. "What" was over for a few months before this. "Kurt, I got your medals, What? I said I got your medals. What?"

    ReplyDelete
  31. I do like tony sirico who plays the new dog "Vinnie".

    ReplyDelete
  32. I tried watching Regular Show but it's pretty god-awful. Adventure Time at least has a wide variety of interesting characters and storylines that keep it interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ah, well, never read the comics only seen the films, thank for clearing that up.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It was always rumored that they would sneak in a Capaldi appearance in the 50th Anniversary special. The real surprise was the Tom Baker guest spot at the very end.....

    ReplyDelete
  35. It was another player that fucked up, not Welker. Can't blame it on him this time.....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yeah, the episodes centering around Stewie and Brian were the only ones worth watching. So much for that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. American Dad has a completely different writing staff and Seth is admittedly hands-off with them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I personally think that Regular Show is better than Adventure Time. At least RS is trying to be grounded in a normal reality.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Up until the Game of Thrones trilogy, the season has been shit. God-awful and not worth the wait.

Even the Goth episode reeked of passive-aggressive contempt from fans who like the Goth kids....

    ReplyDelete
  40. What did you think about the trapped in the vault one?

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's lost it's touch AGES ago. And they pissed away a chance to change shit up when they did the reset the episode after Your Getting Older....

    ReplyDelete
  42. As a Peyton Manning fan for a long time...this one hurt. Moreno tore shit up though and proved he was(to quote a WWE announcer that I cannot remember uttered these words) double tough.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh sure, bring up the one exception.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I watched South Park for the first few years when I was a kid, but it never stuck with me longterm at all for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I always remember first noticing the What? during the Austin segment where he berated the Alliance members...

"Your name is Hugh Morrus. What?" I said your name is Hugh Morrus. What? Is that funny? Is that humorous? Are you here to make me laugh? What?

    ReplyDelete
  46. True, but Welker has to alert his guys to back off from the ball. Plus, four catches for 31 yards is weak. He couldn't do anything going up against Kyle Arrington.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I gave up on FG about 2 years ago, but still, WTF?

And on an unrelated topic, anyone who blames that guy that "fumbled" (I put that in quotes because the ball just hit him and he wasn't carrying it, not because I disagreed with the call) for Denver losing is a fucking idiot. For one, it wasn't his fault, and for two, they were up 24-0 at halftime and gave up 28 unanswered points. They shouldn't have ever even been close to being in that position to begin with.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Family Guy stopped being funny when it became a show that aspired for horrible jocks to like it rather than a show that would mock horrible jocks. I know it was always crass but a few years ago it just underwent a really unpleasant change in tone. There's no irony, wit or nuance anymore, it's just a collection of genuinely racist, misogynistic, punching-down crap. Thankfully there's decent adult cartoons like Archer, Bob's Burgers and American Dad to watch in it's stead.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I really liked that episode, though I'll admit that it's not really funny, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  50. God your taste is just the worst. You are the AT&T of people.

I just love Austin's hypocritical humor, when he puts his hand on Rock then admonishes Rock for touching him.

    ReplyDelete
  52. is this the sing-off?

b/c that was hands down one of the WORST things ever. it wasnt even entertaining in a bad way. i hated it then, and i dont see how people can enjoy it in even in a cult/curiosity kind of way.

it's heroes of wrestling bad. nothing redeeming about it. it's there with this last week's raw country

random can be good. the sing-off was just... not, especially when they were dueting . made no fucking sense whatsoever, even in a random way.

    pure shite

    ReplyDelete
  55. You have kids? I am not sure why but I find this surprising.

    ReplyDelete
  56. If you want to trace the path of where FG lost its way, just look at Quagmire. Remember when he was a lovable pervert, before he started becoming an unlikable douche?

Adventure Time does not have interesting characters, unless you consider Star Wars a movie full of interesting characters. Call me crazy, but just because someone is a wizard or Chewbacca it doesn't mean their characters are complex.

God forbid he have an opinion. Besides, for a show that is evidently on the cusp of pop culture, basing a show on goth kids isn't exactly having your finger on that particular pulse.

    ReplyDelete
  63. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryNovember 25, 2013 at 1:07 AM

Yeah, it wasn't like he touched it like an idiot of Leon Lett proportions, Welker gave the signal a little too late to give Carter ample time to clear the area and just had an unfortunate bounce. But yeah, not many good things will come out of squandering a 24-0 halftime lead.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I thought the Capaldi reveal was handled well, all things considered. But Baker's guest spot ... nothing against him, but I thought the valentine for the show in the Gatiss origin special hit the mark more cleanly.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Tells off Brian and all of a sudden he becomes an unlikable douche.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ironically, my dad(I was late with Fantasy Football so I helped him with his team this year) needed a win this week. He was up by about 35 points but his opponent had Manning and Gostkowski. It was tough. I had to root for Manning but hope he didn't put up gaudy numbers. I nearly got to have my cake and eat that sumbitch too.

This doesn't warrant a new thread, but while we're reminiscing about promos...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN_dRIMnNYU

My favourite part is at about 8:00, when Nash gets in Goldberg's face and elevates the testosterone about threefold: "You might have two hundred wins, but baby, you got one loss, AND YOU'RE LOOKIN' AT IT!"

    ReplyDelete
  69. I would be excited about Josh Gordon putting up 247 yards if I didn't bench him in Fantasy.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Everyone in my house thought I was a paranoid freak for worrying when Denver was up 24-0 at half time. I've seen this movie too many times and I hate the ending.

    ReplyDelete
  71. If that was a one-time thing, it would have been fine, but Quagmire's had that kind of dismissive attitude ever since. And his hatred for Brian extended long after that episode.

Hell, he was on his cell phone during the funeral ignoring everything!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Nice to see Glenn Howerton is getting more work.

    ReplyDelete
  73. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryNovember 25, 2013 at 2:10 AM

At least HHH was a terrific Boromir in LOTR; I'm surprised that didn't open a lot of doors for him in Hollywood, because that should've made him a bigger star than Rocky even.

    ReplyDelete
  74. davidbonzaisaldanamontgomeryNovember 25, 2013 at 2:12 AM

Seconded about the Marvel Cinematic Universe casting (aside from needing a second casting to get Bruce Banner right; Ed Norton was decent, but Mark Ruffalo fucking nailed it); just about all the major players have pretty much been pitch-perfect bringing those heroes and villains to life.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I thought Captain America sucked ass. That movie just looked cheap, and Evans has the charisma of wet cardboard.

    saw this elsewhere:

"Am I the only one who paid attention? Stewie told Brian that he traveled FORWARD in time to Christmas so he didn't have to wait for the new toys to come out. Stewie has rarely mentioned travel to the future.

How much do you wanna bet that the Christmas episode will involve Stewie finding Past Stewie come Christmas time, using Past Stewie's return pad and going back to save Brian?"

    ReplyDelete
  81. That was the best football game (American footall) I've seen seen since that crazy Pats/Niners game last year. I was actually annoyed I watched SS instead of all of that. If WWE needs a 6th authority figure, copy a Bill Bellichick type character...he's such a caricature

    ReplyDelete
  82. Also, of ALL the family guy characters to get a spin off? Why did they ever choose Cleveland? Wouldn't Quagmire have been 1000 times better?

    ReplyDelete
  83. The commercials were saying "a griffin family member dies" so they did advertise it

    ReplyDelete
  84. Just watch these guys facial expressions, and how they play to the crowd...WWE guys could NEVER EVER EVER do that now. Try this promo with anybody in the wwe now and it bombs so so hard. Maybe Punk could hold his own but that's it

    ReplyDelete
  85. Yeah, maybe if they had a deal with bho or Cinemax.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Because lovable sex offender just screams appropriate for network tv right?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Well wouldn't you hate the pretentious dog that fucked your father? Brian was a douchebag and quagmire was the only one willing to call him on it.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Because he's the type of person you'd want nowhere near your own children?

    ReplyDelete
  89. How can you comment on something you don't watch Scott? You only have preconceived notions to dictate your hatred, and honestly this wasn't bad at all. The episode itself was great, made logical sense and forwarded the plot of the show. It was a great episode that was much better than most things they've put out recently. Plus you love sopranos so you should be happy a familiar voice is getting work.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Wait, so Family Guy replaced Brian with Poochie?

    ReplyDelete
  91. I dismissed Family Guy on this very blog a few years ago, and was flamed for my troubles. Glad you all finally figured out it's a dull, creatively bankrupt piece of crap.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Adventure Time is the only children's show I know of where you get the impression a lead character raped someone.

Adventure Time does a lot of business with subtext. Some of which I find genuinely clever. I don't care for the show myself, but my wife loves it.

I'll stick with American Dad for my animated needs.

    ReplyDelete
  93. No he's Bubba Tough!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Commenting on something you haven't watched is pretty much a cottage industry here.

    ReplyDelete
  95. For having an opinion different than yours?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Glad you cleared that up, especially since you have criticized others for that sort of thinking in the past. You should really keep better records.

    ReplyDelete
  97. If they redid everything in the episode in the last 3 minutes, people would complain harder, I bet. (like the Stewie kills Lois episode where it ended up all being a simulation)
This will be like Superior Spider-Man, you know Peter/Brian WILL be back, this is just an interesting twist.
I never totally turned on FG....it's no longer appointment watching, but it's like indy wrestling...sometimes you need a spotfest.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Trey? Matt? Is that you?

    ReplyDelete
  99. They had to push the brothas out, I tell you...

    ReplyDelete
  100. Doesn't make it right. I'm all for having opinions, but I prefer informed opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  101. People change. Quagmire often was the butt of jokes, his father became his mother, he can't find true love just cheap easy one night stands, his friend got promoted to a new show where he was the center piece but quagmire didn't. He was treated like shit and he's bitter. It's character development. Much like real life you aren't supposed to like everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  102. It was good, I have to rewatch and see if it holds up. Skull's defeat was too fast, IMO.
Chris Evans as Cap = even better in Avengers. And before that, him and Michael Chiklis saved F4 from being total crap.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I preferred when you were a politician.

    ReplyDelete

  108. Actually it made perfect sense:
Rock was still pissed at Austin for beating him at WM with Vince's help. Austin, knowing he couldn't beat the Rock decides to try and get the Rock in a better mood by singing a song. Rock plays along with it to lower Austin's guard, and the Rock never forgets ROCK BOTTOM ROCK BOTTOM ROCK BOTTOM.

  124. This got me thinking, we have lots of great promos from Attitude Era but what were some of the greatest promos in WCW around the same time? You had the Horseman skit that was memorable, but what else? I'm drawing a blank at this time.

    ReplyDelete
  125. My guess is Seth MacFarlane is trying to kill the show off once and for all.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I didn't mind Cleveland getting the spinoff since he had the most room to grow. A Brian & Stewie spinoff would have gutted the main show and until recently Quagmire was just a one-note running gag. Too bad Cleveland's show sucked so much.

Bob's Burgers is the king right now.

    ReplyDelete
  127. It's interesting the kind of things we get attached to depending on where we were in our lives as part of the fandom. I am amazed that people get angry at "look at how Cena makes a joke out of everything" and then think this is somehow amazing.

BTW, Scott as a personal favor I can tell you that if you are 30+ you really have no business using either "epic" or "zomg", terms that were cool among the teen set 5 years ago. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  128. Cena is too mature to get into a dick measuring contest. He'd give a speech about how it doesn't matter how big your dick is, as long as you're a good, honest person who gives it his best. He'd then tell Triple H he smells like be popped his pants, and Triple H would go into a tirade about how his poop is better than Cena's poop.

    ReplyDelete
  132. You know what the difference between this promo and the vast majority of promos today?

I was actually excited watching this. I got into it, just like the very hot crowd got into it. Not only that, but because of this promo alone, I kinda want to watch the PPV they're promoting.

The last time that ever happened to me was Punk's pipe-bomb stuff before Money in the Bank. And before that? Christ, I can't even remember.

What I think is hilarious is that these two were even able to do this. We'd seen a lot of Austin/Rock promos before, so I can just imagine what they were saying backstage, "What the hell can do we do different that they hadn't seen before? Screw it, you know what, let's keep stealing each other's mics and then serenade to each other."

  136. From Scott's rant -

"- Main event interview: The Rock hasn’t forgotten WM, oh no. He wants a piece of Austin, but then before the interview can go anywhere useful they start interrupting each other’s comedy bits, then say “what” at each other for five minutes, then exchange songs as Austin does “Delta Dawn” and Rock does “The Gambler”. Yeah, I remember when Ray Stevens and Pepper Gomez sang to each other the week before their big match in San Francisco, man, that drew MILLIONS. Rock wants a duet, so they share the honors on “Marguaritaville” before the inevitable Rock Bottom and Alliance v. WWF schmoz to end the show. I’m sure you can all guess how much I loved seeing 20 minutes of potential in-ring time taken away so we could be blessed with this segment, so I’ll skip any lengthy diatribes on the subject because frankly I don’t give a fuck about this PPV to begin with at this point and there’s very little they can do to make me care any less anyway. Do like Buffy and make Smackdown into a musical for all I care, this PPV is dead in the water for more reasons than I can possibly list here."

Seems time has changed his opinion.

  137. I like what you did there. I'll admit I didn't like it then or now.

  138. Cosign. Those types of interviews work well at house shows but don't translate well on live TV.

  141. How are you supposed to read ZOMG anyhow?

I always read it as "zed, oh my god" and that's really awkward. The murican way "zee, oh my god" is unreadable also.

I'm even less hip than Scott.

  142. I was off the grid during this time frame so I think that's the first that I've ever seen it.
Pretty good, pretty fun. The actual content was stupid, but the two of them just carried it into something good with their natural charisma.

  143. Did you remember that, or do you go into some archive and double check all of Scott's current opinions for contradictions?
I always wonder with this sort of thing. I don't remember stuff like that 12 years later.
    Your point is entirely valid.

  145. Nothing has changed in terms of the WWF/WWE.

I love that the fact there's only one mic goes unmentioned the whole time.

I wonder if it was BECAUSE they knew the Invasion/SVS 2001 was dead in the water and instead of doing one last hard sell, just told Rock and Austin to do whatever it was they were doing in house shows and just entertain everyone till 11:05.

In the words of Booker T's mystery stalker that we never knew the identity of: I STILL REMEMBER.

I still remember Scott one-starring Taker/Foley HIAC and being very meh on WMXIX the first time around.

History is written by the winners (John Cena: or the WEINERS!) as they say. WWE hypes up their past glory and doesn't exactly go into detail with WCW's stuff.

Let's not be harsh on ourselves, WCW stopped being good in 1999.
