20 years of announcing

Hi, Scott!

Today is my 20th anniversary as a pro wrestling announcer. You reviewed one of my shows (ROH Glory By Honor). You'll be happy to know that last time I called an MMA show, I used the phrase "AIRHORN OF DOOM."

To celebrate, I made this video called "The Four Steps to Becoming a Great Pro Wrestling Announcer." Would you mind sharing it with the BoD? Thanks.

  1. This is wonderful, and I'm jealous, and enjoyed this article thoroughly.

Annnndddddd in case anyone in the pro-wrestling business is looking for production, creative, writing, people I'll just uh, I'll just leave this here:

  2. Anytime you have the chance to book a rematch of the classic Armageddon 2008 match between Randy Orton and Batista as the main event of 30, you gotta do it.

  3. Counterpoint: Miz is a bitch. He may be the bitchiest bitch who ever existed.

  4. I don't know if this interests anyone but someone has a lot of time on their hands.

    Ratings for WWE roster.

  5. What do you do with sting at mania if he signs? Job him to hhh or would that be beneath huntor? Put him in a tag match? Its hard for me to care since he's washed up but surfer dude sting was one of my faves so I'd hate to see him dance with Hornswoggle or something like that. Maybe let sting have a match against...Vince?

  6. I posted a summary of Scherer's hotline on the blog. They misintrepted the story, like usual. Scherer never reported that he was going to win the belt at Elimination Chamber, he gave an idea of a scenario that would lead to Bryan facing Orton and Batista at Mania in a three-way match. I can at least comprehend the shit I post in the news updates and separate what they are reporting from their own ideas and speculations.

  7. Sting/Warrior vs. Real Americans

  8. What about their Extreme Rules cage match they had that lasted 5 minutes in 2009?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Managed by Hulk Hogan.

  10. This Bryan thing is really annoying. WWE has alot going for it right now - Batistas return, Brock, Reigns about to break out, the network, upcoming nostalgia spots by Hogan amd Warrior, etc. The Bryan thing is such a black eye that it overshadows all the other good stuff. I'm a fan of Big Dave but wwe has already made him annoy me in 8 days.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'd have him in Bryan's corner and have Flair in heel Batista's. This of course assumes the Hall of Fame for the Stinger.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Just an appearance. He does a lot of stuff for the network, wrestles off and on throughout the year, maybe even a title match, gets inducted into the HoF in 2015 and has his final match at 31.

  13. WWE needs to stop hiring old guys. I love Sting, but WWE has way too many guys 40+ on their roster now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Vince probably heard that the nwo was doing gangbuster business "Down South" and got confused.

He probably saw Dan Severn backstage and wondered who hired Magnum TA.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It is more for the network, HoF, and DVDs than actually pushing another 40 year old on TV every week.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm much more of a Punk guy then Danialii

    ReplyDelete
  17. WWE never thinks about their future. Do you think that the Outlaws are tag champs for the network or because they are Triple H's buddies?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I hate how much I like this idea.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hogan big boot to Colter!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Outlaws being champs is such a minor that isn't going to last. Hard to care enough to bitch about that one.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hogan fights off Zeb without doing anything seriously physical. Works for me

    ReplyDelete
  22. What about 45 year old Batista winning the Rumble in his first match back?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dumbest thing they did in a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I just hope they aren't going to screw us again to troll us and have Bryan lose the Chamber match.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'd say from the build of RR to the ending of Survivor Series 98.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Real Americans better go over.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Another fantastic episode of RAW from arguable the strongest period of writing, talent and execution that pro wrestling has ever seen, in any organization.

That said, I still find the reunification of DX somewhat bitter sweet. I know why Shawn had to go and why it was best for him to go (not only for his own health, but for the fact that it was a concrete turning of the page and shifting of 'the man' in the locker room... a shift that Shawn, at that time, probably would have tried to undermine as much as possible).

That said, DX HBK is, IMO, the best heel in WWE history. I understand arguments to the contrary and the favorites others may have, but to me it's just not close at all. So having that character robbed of me, and missing out on the potential HBK/Austin rematch (and maybe a third match, who knows) still makes me a little sad.

    Ah well....

*Watches the forgotten classic between the 2 at KOTR 97*

  28. if only the announcers in TNA and WWE would just keep those things in mind.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The period after Summerslam when the belt was held up for two weeks was a little rough. It set Survivor Series up perfectly, though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. he put on good matches with Cody Rhodes and Mark Henry as well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I bet it's Robert Fuller. Nobody's seen him since was Tennessee Lee, manager of Jeff Jarrett, evil country singer 2.0 in 1998

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nice review, man. And you're right, the crowd for the Austin promo was so loud it was ridiculous. My buddies and I went to this show at the then Pepsi Arena in Albany. Awesome show, and an incredible experience. I don't think I've ever heard a live crowd louder than when Austin came out. As you mentioned, we literally couldn't hear a word Vince was saying. Unbelievable! Oh yeah, we also got X-Pac to point at the eight-ball sign we made of him. As 20 year olds at the time, oh that made our day...

    ReplyDelete
  33. btw: didn't someone just recently claim that Cena would win almost all of his ppv matches?

    ReplyDelete
  34. That was kind of a weird transition period if I remember correctly. The Undertaker was kind of a heel all of a sudden but not completely, but he was with Kane. Rock, Mankind and Shamrock were getting pushed against them as sort-of faces. It was a strange little period but everything would be ironed out within a few months (Mankind as a face, Rock as a heel, Shamrock as a heel). Rock was getting mega-over all of a sudden until he turned heel at Survivor Series. Everything tied together in a way that today's storylines don't seem to anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Same here, agreed. By '98, the LOD were out of shape and having really crappy matches. And Sunny was starting to look a little worse for wear (a little, it would obviously get much worse for her).

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ha! I was just thinking about that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. So they put him on first, thinking the crowd wouldn't chant for the rest of the show... DID THEY NOT EVEN FUCKING SEE THE ROYAL RUMBLE THE NIGHT BEFORE!?!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm still waiting for some Daniel Bryan / YES! chants to break out at the State of the Union. This crowd has nothing on Pittsburgh.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm kinda hoping they use them to transition the belts to the Usos. Could be a decent Mania undercard match. Maybe make it a four way with PTP and We the People.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You know what I mean.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think a cameo at Mania and then maybe a SummerSlam match against Cena or Taker. Give him some time to get in better shape plus I think a non-streak match against Taker could actually be more intriguing if the outcome isn't obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I couldn't find a link to the Austin segment...anyone find one?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yeah, Johnny Ace should have gone over.

What else are we going to talk about? Not like there's anything else interesting going on in WWE right now.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Booker T was in the main event of Fall Brawl '93 and he participated in a couple of the World War 3 60-man battle royals.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Probably because Jackson Hewitt is way too expensive to sign to a developmental deal.

    ReplyDelete
  47. You have me there.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Austin never had a solo main event until after Hart left at SURVIVOR SERIES '97. They tested him by winning ROYAL RUMBLE '98 but they didn't promote the PPV on his back.Until HBK Left at WRESTLEMANIA '98. Even then, the next PPV had Undertaker/Kane in the main event and Austin in the undercard.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Exactly. Rock was in 2 main events, but only when facing off against Austin. After that feud, Austin's feud was the main event and Rock was in the secondary slot. Then in fall of 2000 the beginnings of the Triple H heel run began, putting him in the top slot. The Rock didn't have a main event that didn't involve Triple H or Austin in the lead role until after both were out with injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Big Show (along with Kane and Mark Henry) is one of those guys WWE has on standby to warm up as a temporary face/heel to give a win to a newly incumbent world champion. They do them on non-main PPVS but never the selling point to a major show.

And yes, even with Cena out those couple months in the end of 2013 it wasn't enough to give the younger guys a break. Roughly around the same time they realized Bryan wasn't increasing TV ratings while in the title picture is when they signed the Batista deal for 2014-2016, and with Show and Cena they could fill time until then.
