Found this cool interview with EZ E back from 2001. For any of you anoraks out there (would there REALLY be any wrestling anoraks in a place like this?), you'd understand the significance of this date.
Eric was in the process of buying out WCW with the assistance of Fusient Media Ventures. He planned on closing WCW for a short period, then re-opening with a PPV known as 'The Big Bang - The Creation of the New WCW'.

A lot of ground is covered, and Eric seems fairly confident (can you believe that?) at this stage. He gives a bit of insight as to some of his views on how business should be conducted from then on, and takes questions from both the hosts, and callers.
I've been painting my living room all day and this has definitely helped timed pass.
It also raises some interesting topics/questions:
*What were your thoughts at the time when you heard all of this news? What were your expectations, and were you willing to give WCW another shot?
*How do you think they would have done?
*Who would you have based the company around? Who do you think Eric would have based the company around?
If Bischoff hired a young Daniel Bryan and built the company around him, WWE would be out of business today.

Yeah right. If Bischoff hired a young Daniel Bryan, he'd be an opening match guy with no storylines while 50-year-olds would be in the main-event.

ReplyDeleteI remember finding out about the sale of WCW and going on a spree trying to find as much news as possible on it online, and getting frustrated with the same stories being reposted on every different newz site.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that Bischoff lost any chance he had of TV time for his new version of WCW, because if he stayed away from the egos that caused the clusterfuck of booking nightmares from the final years of AOL-Time Warner WCW, it might have been a good promotion. But much like Bischoff's involvement with TNA, Hogan would have been involved, too, and that would have led to the "same old shit," so to speak.
Vince buying WCW came as a complete shock, but not out of nowhere. It was reported as a possibility, but I didn't believe it until I was watching Raw and Nitro that night.
Meh.. by that time I could really care less about WCW. I had stopped watching the show regularly sometime in 2000 (near the end of Russo). I read the rumors and didn't really think Bischoff was the man to lead WCW after all the shenanigans of the past.I got really excited when Vince bought WCW, but we all know how that turned out.
