Hi there Scott. I want to ask if you would be able to plug my hip hop blog on your site.
Dedication, showing love to hip hop music and its culture, almost 30 years and counting!!!!! The best hip hop blog online!!!!! (I also consider this to be my first stepping stone to achieving my ultimate goal/dream, which is entering the music business in a behind the scenes capacity!)
The crowd only cared about Ziggler and Jericho at #s 1-2. Once they were gone and the crowd was left with Vince's dream team of Cena, Sheamus and Ryback, the air went out of the building.
ReplyDelete^ With Vince CLEARLY piping in the line "This is the moment you will tell your grand-kids about!" to JBL when the 3 of them are in the ring at the end
ReplyDeleteI had mentioned it before, but Sting/Taker at WM27 was soooo do-able.
ReplyDeleteDuring that whole 2/21/11 deal, which ended up being Taker, because of course. Have Taker come down to the ring on that RAW, start doing a promo, then mid-promo have the 2/21/11 video play on the titantron, showing that indeed it wasent for Taker. End the video with a Crow making "crow sounds"? Whatever they do. The smarks will catch on and lose their shit. Blackout the arena with a spotlight to the top of the arena showing Sting standing their with a crow in one hand with the other holding the bat pointing to the Wrestlemania sign. Have Taker sell the shit out of the moment. Bang. Too easy.
How does Vince have writers who get paid I assume alot more than I do, and all they could come up with was "Have it be Taker, like everyone assumed, then have Hunter come down, and they stare at the sign and no one gives a shit"
Fair, but I'd still put the 2012 edition a hair above this one. Despite my severe disappointment in the outcome, the ending sequence with the final 4 guys was very good.
ReplyDeleteRoyal Rumble 1990 was the second PPV my parents ever ordered for me and has always held a special place in my heart. I taped the show on VHS and watched that match over and over as a kid. I was amazed watching it again nearly 25 years later how much fun I had watching it again as an adult. You hit the nail on the head with all of the smaller stories being told. It also helped that you have Jesse Ventura on commentary to really hammer the stories home.
ReplyDeleteNah, the problem with today's Rumbles are the lack of booking leading up to the show. They put zero effort in so there are no real issues so it becomes JUST a match.
ReplyDeleteLook at the 2010 edition, which is the last great one, an easy *****, had multiple storylines intersecting (HBK trying to get at the Undertaker, the HHH/HBK mini-feud over it, Edge returning, CM Punk's straight edge stuff, and big names who wanted the title in HHH/Cena/Batista/Jericho).
This year? As Scott said, it's Punk, Batista and 28 warm bodies. No matter how good the booking is, you NEED an angle. The last few Rumbles have had no angles and it hurts it. Even the 2009 Rumble, which wasn't that good, had the Legacy storyline with Orton/DiBiase/Rhodes as a team that carried it through.
To be fair, the crowd got pretty hot for the Ryback/Cena ending.
ReplyDeleteTough to judge the 2013 Rumble fairly because it's the only time the match was truly a midcard match - everyone was there for Rock/Punk. That's why I ordered it.
Best Rumble ever. Seriously. Everything was booked to perfection and there were so many WOW moments. HBK eliminating HHH was my favorite, though HBK getting eliminated and starting to cry was pretty amazing too.
ReplyDeleteAnd it even had Beth Phoenix kissing Khali out! I'm going to watch that one tonight now.
I also want to point out that Goldust's pop has been sustained from this Royal Rumble until today.
ReplyDeleteThey got hot because they wanted to see Ryback win.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, 1998 onward Flair was in his 50's and 60's so of course his offense was going to be limited.
ReplyDelete"Barbarian doesn't like Flair"
ReplyDelete"They don't call him the Barbarian b/c he's a hairdresser on his day off!"
Umm, that would kind of depend if Sting was actually under a WWE contract. He wasn't.
ReplyDeleteSssh....those silly facts keep getting in the way.
ReplyDeleteLast year was a great example of wishful thinking: So hyped for the PPV, hoping being reason that Cena/Rock at WM wouldn't need the title. Cena wins the Rumble, and then the false finish before Rock going over Punk... yeah, deflating. Still enjoyed the show, but damn if I hated how predictable the two money matches were.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of Ryback (as in, at the time of the match), but I was cheering like hell for him to win, just so it wasn't Cena. Again.
ReplyDeleteNo shit of course he'd be under contract
ReplyDeleteDespite the Rumble's inadequacies in the present day, I can't wait to be there Sunday. Meeting Sheamus and Jericho the next two days. Anyone with some good ice-breakers for either guy. I was thinking of bringing Sheamus a bag of limes and letting it play out.
ReplyDeleteI love the 90 rumble too princess!
ReplyDeleteGeez Princess thanks for really putting the 1990 rumble over. Hadn't seen it since my childhood and as you said it's really good. I agree with all you said but will add that the crowd is NUCLEAR, and my rule is that a great crowd bumps up a match 1/4*
ReplyDeleteisn't Sting usually the one that gets turned on by his partners?
ReplyDeletebring him a lobster head
ReplyDeletewhere are your seats?
Yep, I'm really surprised that they haven't brought that back. Of course, I haven't watch much of the product in a long time, so I may be wrong on that one.
ReplyDeleteOnly thing I liked about that gimmick was where they were billed from...Shaker Heights, Ohio. Its an utra-rich suburb on the east side of Cleveland. My 'burb was a couple miles east but, especially as a kid, it was a world apart with all its mansions. So I kinda bought into their schtick.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm sure it was lost on 98% of the rest of the audience. :)
I think the break up of the Shield will play a major part in this year's Rumble.
ReplyDeleteThe exact section escapes me but to the immediate side of the entrance.
ReplyDeleteUm, "no one gives a shit" is a flat out lie. Sure you might not have given a shit, which is fine, but don't lump your personal opinion on everyone else.
ReplyDeleteAnd then Cena won, making the outcome of the main event cripplingly obvious. Not the best order of things. Having Rock beat Punk first, THEN seeing if Cena could "earn" his dream re-match would have been better. Not much better, but better.
ReplyDeleteI'm still foolishly holding out hope for Bryan being eliminated by HBK, leading to a Mania match. HBK is going to be there in the analyst spot for the pre-show, so we at least have him in the building... HOPE IS ALIVE!!!!
ReplyDeleteSheamus: watch an episode of "Father Ted" somewhere online, it's an Irish comedy that he (very rightly so) loves.
ReplyDeleteJericho: Tell him you once bought a Fozzy CD and you didn't return it.
I would have bought him a bottle of bronzer. But I'm a jerk.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, in the Gorilla position, Hunter proposes a toast...
ReplyDelete"Gentlemen, to Evil!"
Plus it's going WAAAAY back to a promotion they don't promote as much as WCW or ECW.
ReplyDeleteGood point, but I wish he'd have had the good sense to call it a career rather than embarrass himself.
ReplyDeleteThe Savage issue is annoying. Suddenly you can eliminate yourself and then continue to wrestle for twenty minutes?!
ReplyDeleteI mentioned this in another thread a few weeks ago but I was sitting front row (if you're coming down the aisle, we were on the right hand side) with my brother and two friends. 14 year old me was too scared to yell much but it was an awesome experience! And the ending where we cheered Sid and booed Hogan (in 1992!) was pretty wild. Great show!
ReplyDeleteI agree, I remember being pretty annoyed that they redubbed the commentary. It went from Bobby Heenan saying it was "every man for himself" when Sid threw out Hogan to Bobby Heenan saying "He called him 'big boy,' Monsoon!" It was ridiculous! Glad they went back to the original commentary later on. That kind of rewriting of history was really a slap in the face to fans.
