QOTD

This from a Rob:

Here's a mulitpart WRESTLING question for you to use.  Hopefully it'll break the odd direction the QOTD has been trending.

With the Grand Poobah upon us, what is your favorite Wrestlemania story line?  There are so many, Austin/Rock, Savage/Hogan, Warrior/Savage, Taker/Shawn, Austin/Tyson/Michaels and so on.

Part 2: Wrestlemania used to be a culmination of the WWEs storytelling year.  Now it seems that it's primarily a show that's booked within the normal context of storyline developments, just with more star power.  Is this a good move?

Comments

  1. It has to be the case for Part 2 now because WM is when the fans start coming back, so the April show is necessary to get payoffs to storylines that may or may not have all the loose ends tied up, plus it only makes sense to run the "You beat me at the Super Bowl of Wrestling, so I want revenge" matches.

And favorite WM storyline was Angle/Lesnar for what I was around to see and Hart/Hart for the all-time best.

  2. WM 17, Austin/Rock.

Part 2: Maybe? Yeah, it loses one aspect of what made it "special", but seems to be adding emphasis to another. The wrestling fan in me says "BAD" idea, but the pragmatist says "They're moving in that direction anyway."

SECOND greatest WWE promo video ever.

  4. Part 2: wwe cant win with us. When they do long drawn out storylines like Austin/Cena 1 and 2 they are "phoning it in" and it's "boring". When they're booking it like they are this year, they're "directionless".

So many good WM storylines to pick from. I love Austin/Tyson/DX since that was the most invested I've ever been as a fan. Taker/HBK part 2 was pretty fucking awesome as well

  5. What's 1? The "Do I have Your attention now" MITB?

    Yours makes a good #3/#4

  7. Maybe it's the 10 year old talking but Bossman/Heenan is my favorite. He was bad talking the man's mama. You don't bad talk a country boy's mama, you hear me?

I guess it's a good move since they still raking the dollars. Personally, I don't care for it, but I can never second guess something that works.

    ReplyDelete
  8. This thing does nothing for me. It's weird but I was over those two by the time WM hit. Loved the sing along though, so there is that.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Bossman was fucking awesone. That's undisputable scientific fact

    ReplyDelete
  10. I don't know how WCW let him get away. If he was in WCW cutting those promos against Flair they would have done some business.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Also, the story for Virgil/Dibiase at WM7 was awesome. The match was kinda disappointing, specifically the finish (it was a dq or a count out iirc) but the storyline and incorporation of piper were awesome

    ReplyDelete
  12. Taker/HBk

No,every storyline must have a 1st,2nd and a 3rd,what better to finish than it the biggest stage of the company.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Guess I'll take this opportunity to post the epicness that is the WAHYAH

  14. He'd have never gotten into that position in NWA/WCW. At least not before he went north.

And by the time WCW got him back, it was all too late.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Limb bizkit in a promo was suprise that actually worked.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I doubt he had many political connections. IIRC he was originally a job guy there and then they let him do the Big Bubba thing for a while. They had no idea what they had in him and never bothered to find out.

    ReplyDelete
  17. He was a job guy who impressed a LOT of people, and as a result was turned into Big Bubba. He was a face, for a short while, in the UWF (winning the belt from One Man Gang), but he never really acted like one IIRC. And he was never a face with Crockett.

And then Vince did what he does best, and made a lot more out of something.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wasn't aware of his UWF stuff, we didn't get that around here. But as Big Bubba he never did much but stand there. He'd interfere every now and again, but never got promo time. It's understandably with Cornette there but still. Let the guy do something.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe, just maybe, if he stays another year or so he gets a bone thrown his way... but why wait, when Vince is offering you one hell of a chance?

Bubba/Boss was the kind of guy Vince could push, while Crockett never really went big guy in the main scene.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't blame Bossman for leaving, I'm mad at Crockett for not giving him a real shot. At the time they were really starved for talent. Ronnie Garvin?????

    ReplyDelete
  21. HHH/Batista. THAT'S how you make a megastar.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Garvin could wrestle long full matches, Bubba couldn't, not yet. Boss Man was a HELL of a character, but the workrate was solid at best. If anything, he got WAY better as a worker in the WWF.

And Bubba's endurance was never a strong suit. He could give you up to 20-25 good minutes, but Crockett/Flair wanted 30+ every night. The math just doesn't add up.

  23. I saw "QOTD" and assumed we would be debating the human trafficking and prostitution trade in the Phillipines. I was pleasantly surprised.

    1) I wanted to go with something old school, but I really enjoyed the Flair/HBK buildup and execution.

    2) For me personally, I hate it. It gave the company a chance to reset once a year, and gave them a clear end point for their supermegahuge storylines.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We can still debate human trafficking if you really want to

    ReplyDelete
  25. Let's not give Meekin any ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I deliver the good brotherrrrrr!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Nikita and Luger were alright at best. Sting wasn't much when he got there either. That stuff was only a big deal when they wanted it to be.

I'm not sure Bossman was ready for that role but they never even gave him a singles push. Not a main event push, but a singles push.

    ReplyDelete
  28. You speak with such knowledge and wisdom

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fine. I'll oblige. Firmly against human trafficking, except for big tittied blonde russian women.

    ReplyDelete
  30. lulz. Why would anyone traffic anything other than blonde, big boobed women?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Because they are awful, awful people.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You win! Upvote for you sir, you earned it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. What if I prefer brunette and big boobed?

    ReplyDelete
  34. This isn't Burger King bub! You will take big boobed blondes and like it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I believe if you ask Dmitri and Evgeni very nicely, they will forcefully dye her hair for you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Or, give them to Devin and myself. And CM Punk.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Regarding the 'odd direction' stuff, I'd like to say a couple of things:

    1. Asking non-wrestling / pop-culture / music / entertainment related questions on a wrestling blog, is THE POINT. If I want to post about polyamory or race-related issues, and do so on a forum or space that focuses exclusively on those issues, I'm going see the same 10-15 responses, the same party line, the same conversations and flaming and ridiculous shit we all see every day.

Posting it here provides an interesting cross section of life, what does your casual wrestling fan think about the issues of the day. What does it say when those very SAME wrestling fans are capable of response and discourse and thought that is far more intelligent and rational and reasoned than the kind of stuff you see on MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, and so on. I don't know what it says, but I find it simply awesome.

    2. Hard questions are worthwhile questions: I like to think about where our world is, how quickly society is changing, how we relate to our fellow men, women, and those in between. I want a general consensus on what we think is offensive, what we think should be allowed, and I like to expand my mind (as I hope you all, do too) via the occasional out-of-left-field question.

When I posted about Police Officers, I was incredibly overwhelmed by the reaction of most folks here who seemed to kind of strongly dislike their presence. I thought the 'White Buffalo' stuff was great reading.

    Anyway, my point:

Asking unexpected questions in an inappropriate forum typically generates the most honest, non-political, not ideological response, and the opportunity to voice our thoughts, positive and negative, outlandish or politically incorrect, is something we should all cherish, not avoid.

    That said:

Part 1: For some reason I was heavily invested in Booker T vs. Triple H at Wrestlemania 19. I was fairly dissapointed by that particular outcome, especially that Pedigree that BEGGED for a kick out.

Part 2: I dunno, I'm not so hardcore a fan that I keep an eye to ALL the storylines, and anything I miss is happily summed up for me via video packages, so I know everything I need to know, going in.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I always thought people from the Pillipines should be called Philopean.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes! I'd stash them in the fridge like Bud Lights. When Raw goes to commercial, I'll go get me a refreshing ice cold big boobed blonde.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm sure Sweet Lee was just busting your balls, it's really not that serious.

    ReplyDelete
  41. So you DO support necrophilia, you sick freak.

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm aware, I just wanted to kind of explain that 1) I'm not crazy and 2) I think this kind of thing is fun.

    3) would be I take this about as seriously as the mole on the back I can't quite reach, but I think that got lost in the shuffle.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Before I answer, I want Farva to tell me what dead vagina feels like first. He shouldn't expect us to believe he works in an ER and has never said to himself, "hmm well we lost one, I wonder what her vagina feels like"

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have given you shit about it, but I'll give you an honest take.

I get why you did it, I just don't get why you did it constantly. Sure, everyone wants a good debate now and again. Just not on their favorite wrestling blog, and certainly not so often. We do a pretty good job of debating wrestling, and sometimes that bleeds into other topics or general tomfoolery, which is nice. I just don't think that making race, Wes Welker's potential second career, or polygamy a focal point is in anyone's best interest.

    ReplyDelete
  45. And definitely not back-to-back-to-back (although those specific ones weren't back to back.)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Because then it turns into CNN or Fox News. The main reason most of us are here is because this isn't Fox or CNN

    ReplyDelete
  47. Someone page Bayless and tell him to put up a Saturday Night Thread. I have to go at 8 but I want to opine before I head out the door. I don't threadjack cause I'm a good little blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  48. 1) My favourite ever was Hogan/Savage. It was such a long term, cohesive story by wrestling standards, and totally sucked me in as a kid.

Virgil/Dibiase was also great, due to the long term build of it.

The Bossman/Perfect match had a great lead up, with Bossman running through the Heenan Family, but Bossman should've won the strap. I was always a Bossman mark though, during both of his WWF runs.

Those are all pretty low ball answers, so I'll throw out Crush/Doink at IX. At the time I was a Crush fan, and I thought that the Doppelganger thing was cool.

In another unlikely appearance on one of these lists by Crush, I liked the Macho Man storyline leading up to X.

    Owen/Bret.

That's all that I've got for now. There's more, but it's time for dinner.

    2) I prefer the old way. They make more money now though, so you can't really hold it against them.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I pretty much agree with Sweet Lee below.

I like that the QOTD's are NOT always wrestling related, and I don't even mind when they get onto deeper subjects the ODD time. But for the most part (like, the extreme most part), let's keep them light. I come here for fun.

Also, the more that we get into heavy stuff, the more likely that someone will cop to some extreme take on some issue and that will make discussion more awkward the rest of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  50. What gives, Farva. Rob got the last QOTD didn't he?! WTF BRO?!?!?!!?!?

Warrior/Savage does it for me. It's my favorite wrestling moment EVER. Nothing better than when Savage reunited with Elizabeth. Just beautiful Shakespeare right there.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Ha. Feel free to email some to me and I'll use them. I've only gotten a handful in like the past like week. This was the best one imo
