Sure you're inundated with Bryan emails today. My reaction is really that I'm surprised I was surprised. I don't know why I keep thinking they're going to do anything different.
Like I said before the show even started, Vince is just gonna dig in even harder now.
Vince could come out tonight and say he wasn't at the show last night and left Triple H and Stephanie in charge and Vince is pissed that Bryan wasn't included in the Rumble match because "the machine" wouldn't let him. Vince announces he is giving Bryan a title shot tonight. Bryan beats Orton for the WWE title tonight on RAW infuriating Triple H. Batista comes out to close the show and attacks Bryan and Batista bombs him while hugging Triple H and Steph. \
ReplyDeleteMania main event: WWE title Match: Bryan (c) w/Vince in his corner vs. Batista w/Triple H/Stephanie in his corner.
Great, now we're getting WWE vs the World post for the next 3 months.
ReplyDeleteRemember the time when a red hot Stone Cold Steve Austin wasn't even entered in the 1998 Royal Rumble? Oh wait, that makes no f'n sense.
ReplyDeleteRaw is in Cleveland tonight. If the crowd acts like the Pittsburgh crowd did, we'll have a full-fledged fiasco.
ReplyDeleteCasual fans don't buy PPVs anymore. But if they see the same thing tonight, it's going to really turn bad.
Great article, but like he said, We'll just keep watching.
ReplyDeleteThey won't. I don't think we are the smarkest area.
ReplyDeleteBleacher report fucking killed them, and twitter is still shitting on the wwe. I know they have their way up their own ass but how they don't read the tea leaves on this I don't know.
ReplyDeleteYup its Vince and his family vs the wwe fans. Waking up this morning I was still mad about the rumble and this shit usually stirs me up for a couple hours and I move on. Not today though
ReplyDeleteI don't have all the faith in the world that the crowd tonight will continue the shit-on-everything run, but if they do it's going to be GLORIOUS. We need a revolution the worst possibly way, and finally the little kiddie Cena fans are growing up and starting to make waves.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad. Even if they just tuned out for one week, it might influence things.
ReplyDeleteCalling it now: Vince gets upset at HHH for keepin Bryan out of the Rumble (since DB "makes money"), leading VKM and DB to join forces against HHH/Sheamoose.
ReplyDeleteSo much right/wrong in that scenario. Can you pick out what?
Vince is the most fascinating guy ever to me. I don't think it's "stupidity" I think it's more "delusional stubbornness" at this point.
ReplyDeleteAm I alone in wanting to see WWE just TRY to keep shoving Orton/Batista for WM down our throat? Because I actually want to see just how bad the crowds will get if they try to stay the course.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it'd turn into a full-scale riot, but at what point do you think we'll start seeing garbage thrown into the ring?
The WWE should thank their lucky stars they aren't running Boston, NYC or Philly tonight.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting though, any long-time WWE stronghold tends to have the snarky fans...certainly a better chance in Cleveland than, say, Phoenix.
If Rock/Cena last year is any indication, we are getting Batista/Orton at Mania whether we like it or not.
ReplyDeleteThe difference is, though, enough of the general audience wanted to see that. It was more smarks like us and SOME of the general audience that didn't want to see it last year.
ReplyDeleteThis year, it's pretty clear that even the general audience is starting to smarten up.
Bizarro World finally gets a push!
ReplyDeleteI bet Vince is pouting like a little kid somewhere.
ReplyDelete"I want them to cheer Dave! Bryan doesn't have the look I want!"
"Some fans at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh appeared upset when they realised he would not appear."
ReplyDeletelol @ "some"
"They were about to announce the launch of their long-awaited WWE Network. They crave mainstream attention, practically begging for it with a stream of B-list celebrities. Who can forget Snooki or Maria Menounos “wrestling” at past WrestleMania events?"
ReplyDeleteWWE logic: a B- celebrity > a B+ wrestler.
I would love to be a fly on the wall today following Vince around. As you say, he is so insulated...last night HAD to be a cruel introduction to reality. Especially when the ratings said Batista is a draw.
ReplyDeleteI haven't commented here lately because it's all Daniel Bryan, all the time. But I do have one serious question: could Bryan shaving that stupid fucking beard be a step in the right direction for him? Face it - Vince is NEVER going to make a guy who looks like a hillbilly his top attraction. So why not go with more of a "mainstream" look and take away some of Vince's ammo against him?
ReplyDeleteOh Vince is not stupid, just extremely cranky and it's his way or the highway.
ReplyDelete< no WWE Network for this guy. I urge you all to do the same and keep watching your dvds/tapes or simply download older wrestling tapes off the net.
ReplyDeleteThe most OVERRATED wrestler around is Daniel Bryan and his fans make me sick. Batista is physically much bigger and more distinguished name as a wrestler Batista is a 6 time world champion, 4 time tag champion, 2 time (now)Royal Rumble winner, and was ranked the #1 wrestler in the world by PWI in 2005 and he deserved the Rumble victory. All you Bryan marks better just get over it and accept the fact that Bryan has never drawn a dime in his life and he is nothing more than an internet darling. Bray Wyatt has much more potential, as does Roman Reigns and they both outshined Bryan tonight with their performances, not their immature mark fans. Bryan should just face Sheamus at WM 30 because both of them are enhancment main eventers and have been transitional champions..The truth is HHH will never make Bryan the man, because the last great worker whom the fans wanted as champion was Benoit and that didnt end well.. HHH knows everything Bryan does will catch up with him and the end to his story will not be pretty much like the Dynamite Kid...I feel horrible for Batista because he deserved a better reaction for his return and victory after making some great movies and accomplishing so much in WWE and venturing into MMA. Orton vs Batista sounds like an AMAZING WM main event and if you cant appreciate that fact then just stop watching wrestling because you obviously cant appreciate real WRESTLING. 'The Animal' returning and cementing his spot in the main event at WM 30, was truly unforgettable!
ReplyDeleteI've been saying that for awhile. He could just trim everything to less mad mountain man levels. I'd prefer him to go back to the look he had a few years ago: really great beard and relatively short hair.
ReplyDeletejust don't subscribe to the Network.
ReplyDeleteEveryone just ignore it.
ReplyDeleteI'll be curious to see if he cuts it down before his wedding.
ReplyDeleteDeserved a better reaction? He really didn't. He was sloppy as all hell and clearly was horribly out of shape in terms of cardio.
ReplyDeleteI'd say the last person the fans wanted as champion was Cena, and the fans got that and look how thats turned out for WWE?
ReplyDeleteAccording to him, his fiancee loves it. Maybe he'd do it so his wedding pictures don't look ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThey sell beards for the kids so it is a high selling merchandise item, you see a lot of them in the crowds. I'd rather they have a real reason to shave it before they do (losing a beard vs hair match, turning heel on his own, etc). Also beards are pretty mainstream and in at the moment in society anyway.
ReplyDeleteI think I've read this now like 5 times. We get it.
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE NOT LISTENING
ReplyDeleteEh.
ReplyDeleteBig Dave was a little rusty but believe me, Orton vs Batista WM 30 main event will be awesome.. Bryan vs Sheamus will be a good pre show match
ReplyDeleteIt's never going to end unless change happens.
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about the idiot post below.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing comment! Yes, that's it - the beard! lolololz
ReplyDeleteI mean, when I think of Hulk Hogan, I think of his mainstream look. I mean, wtf are you talking about?
That is exactly what McMahon said to Austin in 1998 when he was trying to make him the "corporate champion." That was kayfabe, and Austin didn't change.
I added a bit
ReplyDeleteIf you're gonna troll, at least put some realistic thought into it. "Pre-show match." But yes, none of us can appreciate "real wrestling." Got it.
ReplyDeletepik?
ReplyDeleteOMG HE POSTED IT AGAIN HAHAHA WHAT A CARD!
ReplyDeleteGot it.
ReplyDeleteGoing berserk
ReplyDeleteAnd lost to Papa Shango?
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, is that avatar a really old Duane Gill picture?
ReplyDeleteSince when does Vince not like hillbilly fashion? I'm convinced he likes the Wyatts for precisely that same reason.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the money right now to pay for that so I won't.
ReplyDeleteYes, I said the beard was the ONLY reason. It's clearly typed...wait...
ReplyDeleteIf you can't see a clear difference in the presentation of Austin and Hogan vs. Daniel Bryan, I can't help you. Vince likes his wrestlers to be larger than life, and when they're not giants, he preferred handsome guys like Hart, Michaels, Austin, Orton, etc. Bryan looks like a goat. Stop giving the office bullshit excuses for not putting you on top. He can't change his height, but he can change his look.
Huss huss huss
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever been this mad about something wrestling related ever.
ReplyDeletepik pik pik like a...scab? Pimple? I dunno, doesn't really work with your name.
ReplyDeleteI DOWNVOTED MYSELF! HA!
ReplyDeleteI realized a few months ago that they're the new Hillbilly Jim.
ReplyDeletePre-Gillberg
ReplyDeleteThat was Scott Steiner levels of ring rust.
ReplyDeleteRight. That's why I said "Duane Gill." Solid pic.
ReplyDeleteWe're being pik'ed on.
ReplyDeleteOnly WM IX for me.
ReplyDeleteWell he's got us there. Good points all around.
ReplyDeleteAshton!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds great, EXCEPT we all know that Vince would then turn on Bryan and cost him the title, and the Authority circle-jerk would go on for another 6 PPVs.
ReplyDeleteBtw my point from yesterday still stands...do we really want this to turn into 411?
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing to be worried about. When Rock and Austin wrestled, people shit on their matches all the time. Right? Right? RIGHT?
ReplyDeleteI've read that the beard themed stuff is hurting his merch #s
ReplyDeleteOh fantastic, the whole world is bizarre now!
ReplyDeleteI got hooked on Kellers interviews like a year ago. He had alot of ex writers on and they'd just tell sstories Vince. It really was fascinating stuff
ReplyDeleteBook it!
ReplyDeleteThanks. He might be the funniest looking jobber of them all, and there were some real champs making the enhancement rounds back in the day.
ReplyDeleteAnd I would not be surprised at all if they are still paranoid about what happened to Chris Benoit.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he's certainly up there for funny-looking jobbers. I'm partial to Rusty Brooks, though...and "The Duke of Dorchester" Pete Doherty.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, before I clicked on your avatar to blow it up, I thought it might be Steve Keirn.
Bizarro World is GAINING MOMENTUM!
ReplyDeleteLet's also just call off the Super Bowl because Peyton Manning is taller than Russell Wilson and he does more commercials. Let's also get rid of Steve Austin's title reigns because Sid was bigger and stronger.
ReplyDeleteSad thing is that Vince don't see DB as a draw. I think the Summerslam numbers convince him that he isn't. Add to the fact that Bryan is never his idea of a star. If the chants translate to numbers then he would push him as the top guy.
ReplyDeleteI don't have an issue with Bryan losing to Wyatt in the opener. Bray's being positioned as a huge star, as evidenced by the dealings with Cena later on, and if Bryan can give him a rub, good for everyone. After that loss, it would've made a GREAT story for him to come back and win the Rumble. Oh, well...
ReplyDeleteUpvote just for the persistence in getting this and yourself over. It's still one of the dumbest things ever posted here.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's coming from a blog that has Jesse Baker!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the blog, Mr. McMahon.
ReplyDeleteAnd WWE is creating separation from reality.
ReplyDeleteHogan's mustache was still in style in the 80's and it's not his fault he went bald. I remember numerous women commenting on how attractive they found Steve Austin in the 90's. I agree the beard and hair are ridiculous, he is suppose to be a more refined technical wrestler. At this point though he is over like rover in spite of himself.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to upgrade your trolling from 1 / 10 to 2 / 10. Still too obvious and trying to hard, but I'll give you an extra point since people responded.
ReplyDeleteWatch DBray win the title at a house show and you can only watch the match if you get the WWE Network...
ReplyDeletePlease stop feeding the troll.
ReplyDeleteHe's got nothing on the Macho Warrior Ric Hogan.
ReplyDeleteWell, Vince does love getting mainstream media attention...
ReplyDeletepik a boo?
ReplyDeleteIf he's going to troll, I'd appreciate a little more work. Didn't he post this into another thread last night?
ReplyDeleteOver the years WWE has driven away all the "general audience" members and left with a crowd that is too smart to the business. Plus logic dictates if you are a fan of something you might google it or look it up online. You are bound to run into a newz site at some point and then it's game on.
ReplyDeleteI literally think everything that's been said on Bryan has been said. The Cena thing is just as interesting to me. They must really really really really be high on Bray to put him in a WM program with Johnny Boy
ReplyDeleteI would be really pissed if this happens as I am not going to Raw tonight. Good news it won't happen
ReplyDeleteAssuming that Rock/Cena and Batista/Orton is somewhat comparable. Even as a rematch there were plenty of people who genuinely cared for "twice in a lifetime" purely because it was Rock vs Cena. Do you honestly think the people who want Batista to not only win the title but to do so by going up against Randy Orton of all people amounts to enough people to justify going through 10 weeks of terrible press, crowd reactions and hoardes of people leaving during your wm main event? I don't, which is why at the very least I'm betting the match doesn't go on last.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or have there been more "gimmick posters" here lately (I'll avoid using the T word for the sake of seeing how it plays out)?
ReplyDeleteDude, the whole building chanted for Bryan last night for 3 hours. Beard or no beard, the guy deserves to be on top.
ReplyDeleteI can't help you if you think him shaving his beard is going to change anything. When a guy is WHITE HOT, you don't change ANYTHING.
Yes there has been
ReplyDeleteYou book a guy to win the Championship, and then you Power Bomb him to set up Wrestlemania?
ReplyDeleteDude, that's Russo talk. You're doing way too muchin that one segm, not to mention that the audience wouldn't buy Vince suddenly believing in Bryan, because everything he's said and done has been on the contrary (insulting and demeaning).
I like the ideas, but if Bryan wins the title, just let him have a clean, hassle-free victory tonight. You can do that other stuff down the road.
Good for Scott's hit totals, bad for us being forced to deal with it?
ReplyDeleteBut this is old man VINCE and HHH we're talking about. We wouldn't be having tis discussion if they used common sense.
ReplyDeleteNot one segment.
ReplyDeleteSegment #1 Show Opener: Vince puts Bryan in title match
Main Event of RAW: Bryan wins title
Overrun: Batista attacks Bryan
They could easily do that tonight if they wanted to. Have Bryan cut a promo where they acknowledge the fan outcry over him not being in the rumble and him explaining that the machine didn't want him anywhere near that match. Have HHH or even better, Vince come out and tell him he's crazy and they aren't trying to keep him down. And to prove it, he's going to face Orton for the title tonight, but if he loses, no more chances.
ReplyDeleteThen have him win the title and then the Elimination Chamber match becomes for the title because they want to get the title off Bryan before Mania.
Even the BBC is jumping on this!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/25911039
On Raw tonight, Daniel Bryan could win the World Title, Roman Reigns could steal the Rumble title shot from Batista in some Russo-esque bumfuckery, and Zack Ryder could pants Triple H on live national television, and I still wouldn't trust this company.
ReplyDeleteThe insult to Bryan is bigger than you realize...look at who entered and who didn't. Orton and Cena couldn't b/c of the title match. Show was too injured thanks to Brock. Bray got involved in the title match so you could see that as "ruining" his Rumble spot (ditto Brock for abusing Show). But both Rhodes brothers got in, and then old ass Kevin Nash got a spot, as well as fucking Torito, and JBL. AND they called a NXT guy up! So Bryan was basically just told, in more ways than one, to fuck off, he doesn't even get a CHANCE at a shot. Fucking insulting no matter what way you look at it.
ReplyDeleteScott made a post about that, already.
ReplyDeleteNice character change on the Tecmo!
ReplyDeleteThere was a fan sitting across the aisle from me dressed as JR who seemed perplexed as to the popularity of Daniel Bryan and was upset at the constant chanting.
ReplyDeleteOkay, pik, this was funny ONCE.
ReplyDeleteBetween punk, cena, Bryan, shield, wyatts the www could have one hell of a main event scene if they booked it correctly.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine a media outlet that WOULDN'T want to jump on board and slag on Vince.
ReplyDeleteJust cannot imagine that they're going to continue to try to shove Face Batista down the audience's throats. Given that his last (awesome) run was as the douchiest heel that could douche, is there not the SLIGHTEST chance that (given last night's reaction) WWE caves, shows that bringing Batista back was a master HHH/Orton plan the whole time and plays off the Evolution reunited angle? You then walk into Mania season we potential for: Cena vs. Batista for the WWE title (note they historically have had awesome matches and it actually references Batista's last feud with Cena over who the "chosen one" was) and maybe Bryan/Punk vs. HHH/Orton?
ReplyDeleteThe only entrants that pissed me off were Torito and JBL. I didn't mind Nash because Reigns eliminating him made it all the more awesome. And they made Rusev look like a million bucks for his debut.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, JBL's spot probably pissed me off the absolute most. That could have easily - EASILY - been given to anyone else. Imagine if Jake was given that spot, for example.
Yea, it's not hard. A heel vs a face for the title. Wrestling 101.
ReplyDeleteThe only ones you listed here that I have a problem with are Torito and JBL. Those two entries were wastes. Considering they had no intention of putting Bryan in the match, they could have given the spots to Brodus, Tensai, or any number of other guys who are on the roster.
ReplyDeletePersonally, as a grown man, I wouldn't want to wear a shirt that reads, "Fear the Beard", but that's an issue with marketing, not booking. The Yes/No Shirt was/is FAR Better, both in terms of color (burgundy) and graphics.
ReplyDeleteTriple H and Nash vs Orton and Batista for the main event!
ReplyDeleteFUCK another Orton vs. HHH match. Fuck both of those guys, worst Wrestlemania main event in the last ten years.
ReplyDeleteWorse than Miz? Really?
ReplyDeleteSadly, my dream of Sister Abigail being revealed to be Uncle Elmer in drag will never be fulfilled.
ReplyDeleteThe amount of non-smart fans at every house show I go to says that there are still "general audience" members yet. The same people who go to a baseball game without knowing every players' fWAR ranking or what their UZR is.
ReplyDeleteI agree that more and more people are knowledgeable about the industry now, but I don't think it's a complete sea change yet.
I'd say it's the worst outside of Wrestlemania 9.
ReplyDeleteEr, you might want to read that post again.
ReplyDeleteTotally. And here I didn't think Shawn Michaels not being entered into the 1996 Rumble and losing to Savio Vega in the opener could be topped...
ReplyDeleteThere are many, many parallels between the two men, and it's ironic that Bryan would be playing the Benoit role ten years later. It's weird, I am 100% sure Bryan's life will have a happier ending, but these two are almost Lincoln/Kennedy-like in their similarities.
ReplyDeleteI was debating about going tonight too but I don't feel like dumping more money after going last night.
ReplyDeleteIsn't my post brilliant?? Did you see it?? Here, let me show you again!
ReplyDelete*turns to the guy next to him at the water cooler* Do you wanna see what I posted on a wrestling blog? It's fucking funny. Here let me show you.
I'd just have Bryan win the EC.
ReplyDeleteI am submitting a rewritten script to the makers of "Lost" in where I have added the Time Travelling Daniel Bryan be responsible for the food drops.
ReplyDeleteYou'd OPEN the show with Bryan winning the title. Without any build whatsoever. Got it.
ReplyDeleteThe Miz deserves a WWE Title shot more than Bryan does
ReplyDeleteI don't mind this Daniel Bryan stuff if it results in a match with Shawn Michaels at mania.
ReplyDeleteWhy? That slogan has been done in the NFL and NBA.
ReplyDeleteWith the way he attacks wrestlers dating Bellas, I'm thinking that Sister Abigail was Nikki and Brie's older sister or something.
ReplyDeleteThis is an odd way to spend one's time.
ReplyDeleteBut we all know that's not happening.
ReplyDeleteStill stuck on the Bryan = Austin comparisons, eh? It's really getting old. THEY ARE NOTHING ALIKE.
ReplyDeleteI personally wouldn't want to wear a shirt with a beard on it that reads "Fear the Beard", as I do not find that aesthetically pleasing. I personally prefer the other look. That's why I used the adverb "Personally"-different strokes for different folks.
ReplyDeleteWin.
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing that frustrates me the most about the current WWE, they have good, young talent RIGHT THERE but refuse to push them to the top. I can't imagine a WWF with Hogan/Piper/Savage still sitting at the top of the card, with a midcard filled with Rock/Austin/HBK/Bret, but that is the world we live in now, and I think it is for worse.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if there is an alternate universe where a meat eating, bald headed, clean shaven DBry has just won his 14th World title while fans pelted the ring with garbage?
ReplyDeleteIt's a motherfucker trying to get out of there.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is why ask asked "Why?" because I wanted to know your honest opinion and wasn't being judgmental.
ReplyDelete3rd time he's copy/pasted that I think, yep.
ReplyDeleteHaha ! Now it's time for us to step up ! Hurry up call Russo ! --- Dixie
ReplyDeleteEh they will say he got a concussion and the marks will buy it.
ReplyDeleteCult status is that you?
ReplyDeleteSeriously to get on the BBC over here in the UK you need some form of credibility normally, so this is frigging huge. So maybe all this could work out right for WWE if they actually hit the emergency button and go through with the Daniel Bryan mega push, this is a truly wasted opportunity if they don't pull something out of their ass tonight.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I'm a little higher on the part timers then you but I agree on premise. Not to digress to the lazy "smart fan" argument but it's a result of the stupid 50/50 mid card booking? How are guys ever supposed to get invested in midcard acts, and subsequently get them pushed to the top with this booking philosophy? The one time we do get behind a guy like Bryan were left hanging. Don't get it
ReplyDeleteYou must be thinking of Big Shows Yes/No shirts. Easy mistake.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, they might as well go full troll mode and have Nash pin Big E for the IC Title tonight with the 8 second Backlund finish.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
ReplyDeleteI liked Nash only because if you're giving someone the Diesel push, having them eliminate Diesel as part of it is pretty cool. The NXT guy I thought looked awesome.
Oddly, the JBL entrance got the most sustained pop of the night in the theatre that I was watching it in. I thought that was a bit weird.
The most OVERRATED wrestler around is Daniel Bryan and his fans make me sick. 'The Animal' returning and cementing his spot in the main event at WM 30, was truly unforgettable!
ReplyDeleteOh, I wasn't accusing anyone of being judgmental. It's difficult, at least on my end, to describe why certain things are pleasing to my eye and not to others, which I like to ascribe to the difficulty of judging aesthetics, or at least, explaining in the written word why something is pleasing to the eye and how that "trumps" another person's definition of beauty.. I like the coloring and graphics to the Yes shirt better, but if someone were to say, "Those colors are garbage!", well, how can I argue that other than asserting my own idea of what style is? As for the notion of wearing a shirt with a beard on it-I personally couldn't wear that because I think it is silly. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who once proudly wore the Kai En Tai INDEED shirt with no irony.
ReplyDeleteBryan-rage aside, I thought that it was absolutely ridiculous that Orton buried Bray as a Duck Dynasty reject, 20 minutes after he had the match of the night, and is obviously a guy that they want to push on top of that.
ReplyDelete50/50 is killing them. I wonder how long Val Venis went after he debuted without losing for example. Or the RTC, or other midcard acts that got over. Another thing, let some OTHER people job instead of Del Rio and Mysterio trading falls. Hell, have 3MB wrestle in single matches, have some heel flatten Ryder for a change.
ReplyDeleteHey, at least Cena lost in that one. That instantly moves it out of the cellar for me.
ReplyDeleteWhat was your point of yesterday?
ReplyDeleteThe announcers being participants was old years ago.
ReplyDeleteBatista was never a draw either, I don't care what the Wrestlemania 21 numbers say.
ReplyDeleteI found something super weird about that too.
ReplyDeleteOrton isn't so good at the improv.
ReplyDeleteDisagree. I love Foley, but he was never this over. And, like was discussed a few days ago, the similarity between Austin and Bryan comes not from the overness but the REASON for their overness; both tap into something real.
ReplyDeleteAustin was identifiable because he had an asshole boss who's ass he wanted to kick. Bryan is similarly catching fire right now because he's busting his ass in a hostile and unsympathetic system. These are real things that people relate to and identify with. Foley had a little of that too, at his peak, but he was such a cartoon character (as Mankind) that it was a degree or two removed; Bryan's as much of a human being as somebody can be in the world of pro wrestling, and that's why he's got this Austin-level heat right now.
Sure, in terms of storyline the Foley comparison is more apt. But in terms of overness, crowd response, and potential, the Austin parallels are completely valid.
If it's the main event and we see thousands of people walk out.
ReplyDeleteSince the interwebs started, the only PPV that comes close to getting shit on by nearly all fans was Halloween Havoc with Hogan/Warrior II. But now, we have Twitter and FB and when former wrestlers are joining in the piling on? Well, this is just something special we are all apart of.
ReplyDeleteThe most OVERRATED wrestler around is Daniel Bryan and his fans make me sick. ReplyDeleteFor some reason I have this memory that there was a shirt for Big Show that read "BIG ALL OVER". I know it can't be true, but as this was the company that put ALWAYS POUNDING ASS on one of their shirts, this isn't out of the realm of possibility.
ReplyDeleteIf chin wins got banned for trolling and we are going to be banning trolls then clean house and get rid of all the much more obnoxious trolls that are popping up more frequently. And if we aren't banning these other shit trolls let chin wins back.
ReplyDeleteIT'S MEEE BATISTA... IT WAS MEEE... ALL... ALONG....
ReplyDeleteI seem to recall the Big All Over one as well
ReplyDeleteRusty Brooks was a champ!
ReplyDeleteOh I totally agree. Chin was more or less behaving and everything, I don't know why the banhammer came down so hard.
ReplyDeleteIf we're going to have trolls, keep the clever ones, lose the fucking idiots.
I don't know, while Foley was a bit of a cartoon, this was just 4-5 months after the Cell bump, and 1 year after his 4 part "candid interview". The "hard working underdog" thing is very similar between the 2.
ReplyDeletePlus, one more example, Daniel got screwed because of a ref's intentional fast count... Anyone remember the Rock/Mankind finish at the "Rock Bottom" PPV? Foley won the title with the mandible claw, only to have it reversed because Rock didn't technically say "I quit" because he was unconscious.
Even the absurdity of the screwjobs are similar in storyline terms.
How about just letting Rey take El Torito's spot, and giving #30 to Daniel Bryan?
ReplyDeleteIt's weird, I imagine this alternate universe where there would be newfound optimism and harmony within WWE Land and the Internet Wrestling Community... Instead, everybody's just really bummed out.
Couldn't possibly be because of anything Vince or HHH did. The people screwed the people, right? I haven't seen this much disappointment to end a show since the Fingerpoke of Doom.
I think they're trying to make Orton into a tweener who fights all comers, regardless of their alignment, but it probably would have been better if Orton had shown fear or hesitation when talking about Wyatt, in order to get him over as an actual threat to his belt.
ReplyDeleteFoley wasn't this over. Bryan is obviously the guy the fans want on top.
ReplyDeleteyep he's copying and pasting now.
ReplyDeleteThis should be popular. Congrats, sir. You are about to become famous.
ReplyDeleteRandy Orton is absolutely terrible at his job, it really just comes down to that. Probably the worst return on that level of sustained push in wrestling history.
ReplyDeletePeople just won't let the Bryan thing go.
ReplyDeleteI'm not contending that the story lines aren't similar, I'm just saying there's a lot of validity in the Austin comparison as well by of both overness and the reasons for the overness.
ReplyDeleteThe worst that could have happened was the huge first hour rating for Raw last week. They're not turning Batista heel. If anything, it only proves to Vince & company that the live fans are wrong.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding. There is getting long in the tooth and then there's this. True words or not I'm beyond tired of it all.
ReplyDeleteI also remember lots of rallying for the obvious Austin/Rock main event to turn into Austin/Foley or Austin/Rock/Foley. Mick was incredibly over.
ReplyDeleteIf only Davey Boy were around to see this… *tear*
ReplyDeleteTommy Dreamer for President.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. Nuff said.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say he's terrible, actually. He's proven that he CAN put on good matches. He just doesn't 99% of the time either because:
ReplyDelete1) He's got the worst attitude and temperament I've ever seen when it comes to dealing with crowds.
2) He doesn't bother putting any effort into his work...UNLESS he's given a huge push and a title run/chase.
Yeah, his approach was just awful.
ReplyDeleteBatista is always Vince's idea of a 'star'. So he doesn't have to jump thru hoops like many others. If the guy isn't Vince's guy, he will have to prove that Vince is wrong. Is it unfair? Of course it is. But look at past history, it's pretty much how Vince has done things.
ReplyDeleteOkay, STOP. Just STOP. In fact, WILL YOU STOP?
ReplyDeleteDo you remember crowds hijacking WWE shows with Foley chants and shitting all over Austin-Rock matches because they wanted Foley on top so bad? No, because nothing even remotely close to last night ever happened with Mick Foley.
ReplyDeleteMaybe some internet boards of the day wanted Foley in the main event, but 99% of the general audience was very happy with WWF's booking at the time. That's not the case today with Bryan.
Again, this is a great booking idea, but it's just going to set up Vince turning on Bryan at WM and renewing the Great Authority Circle Jerk for another six months.
ReplyDeleteJesse Baker is a pulitzer prize winner author in this universe
ReplyDeleteOnto other boards too.
ReplyDeleteHe's gotten a sustained decade-long main event push and is no more over or in a position to draw money than Alberto Del Rio or Damien Sandow. That's an awful fucking return on investment, and yet they just keep doubling down on teh guy.
ReplyDeleteI think they're intentionally downplaying Cena this year because it's Batista's "turn" to be the star this year.
ReplyDeleteA) That's not happening
ReplyDeleteB) That's nowhere near the pay-off that fans want at this point, even if it did happen, which it's not.
A building full of people chanted his name for 3 hours last night, beard and all. I think that if anything, they should AVOID changing his look. The package just as it is, is WORKING.
ReplyDeleteClearly Cena's been rubbing off on him.
ReplyDeleteI actually think they are going to ignore last night and steamroll ahead.
