What the World Was Watching: Monday Night Raw - March 23, 1998

by Logan Scisco

-Vince McMahon saying that Steve Austin winning the WWF championship would be a corporate nightmare on last week’s show is replayed.  Austin will have a rebuttal tonight!

-We are really due for a new RAW opening because the original video has some guys like Sid in it that are no longer part of the company.  To compensate, the company is having to splice in lots of recent footage.

-Jim Ross and Michael Cole are doing commentary and they are taped from Tucson, Arizona.  This is the go home show for WrestleMania XIV.

-Kevin Kelly interviews Steve Austin, who says that Vince McMahon cannot mold or break him.  He says that he respects Shawn Michaels as a wrestler, but he will go through McMahon and all of his cronies to get Michaels in the ring and win the WWF title.  Austin says he has lots of “Steveweisers” on hand and will drink them when D-Generation X and Mike Tyson show up later tonight.  Commissioner Slaughter comes out and tells Austin that he will wrestle the Rock tonight on McMahon’s orders.  Despite Austin saying that he will comply, Slaughter threatens him with making his WrestleMania match against Michaels non-title and that sends Austin into a rage and he gives Slaughter a Stone Cold Stunner.  The approaching angle really makes Slaughter’s role irrelevant, so this is about all he is good for at this point.  1 for 1

-Opening Contest:  Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie beat The Quebecers by disqualification when the New Age Outlaws interfere at 3:50:

Ross spends much of this match hyping the New Age Outlaw title defense at WrestleMania against Cactus and Chainsaw and explaining the rules of their scheduled dumpster match.  During the match, the New Age Outlaws come out in black coat and tie, set up tables by the entrance, and have dates with Cactus and Chainsaw blow up dolls.  Very passable match here, as the Outlaws antics near the entrance receive the most attention and everyone put in the minimal amount of effort prior to the disqualification.  After the bell, the Outlaws blast Cactus with a champagne bucket, break their table across Chainsaw’s head, and give Cactus a spike piledriver on a chair.  Rating:  ¾* (1 for 2)

-Shawn Michaels giving Steve Austin Sweet Chin Music two weeks ago on RAW is the Bop It Slam of the Week.  It sort of defeats the purpose of the Slam of the Week if it is something that happened two weeks ago, no?

-Jeff Jarrett (w/Tennessee Lee) beats Steve Blackman when he falls on top of Blackman during a superplex attempt and Lee holds Blackman’s foot down at 2:24:

Jarrett busts out the electric horse entrance for the second straight week.  Blackman is a solid hand, but there is nothing that helps him stand out on this roster and he’s very bland.  Jarrett cheats to hand Blackman his first loss and when another referee comes down to correct the injustice, Jarrett intelligently knocks him out with a right hand.  This match is actually leading somewhere and starts a two month feud between these two.  This new gimmick is definitely putting Jarrett on the road to the main event!

-D-Generation X and Mike Tyson are shown arriving at the arena in a white limousine.

-Kane’s rampage on last week’s show and his confrontation with the Undertaker is replayed.

-The Undertaker cuts a promo by his parents gravesite.  He asks his parents to forgive him for fighting Kane and he is ready to burn in hell if he does not defeat Kane.  Weird promo to see the Undertaker cut, since its more sentimental than what we usually see.  That said, it did not add anything new to the feud.  1 for 3

-Paul Bearer and Kane come out and Bearer makes fun of the Undertaker promo we just saw.  Bearer says that Kane has equal powers to the Undertaker and to prove it, Kane ignites some of the lights in the arena, fries some of the announcer electronic equipment, and blasts out one of the spotlights.  Bearer gives Kane free reign for his last trick and he decides to set a member of the camera crew on fire.  Pretty hokey segment that turned into “Kane’s magical illusion show.”  Cole’s awful explanation of the segment where he keeps telling us that Kane set a man on fire over and over again also doesn’t help.  1 for 4

-The New Midnight Express (w/Jim Cornette) wrestle The Disciples of Apocalypse  to a double disqualification at 3:33:

It takes less than a minute for the Headbangers to come down to the ring for a closer look at the Express and the Rock N’ Roll Express come out as well.  Soon it becomes a parade of teams that will be in the WrestleMania tag team battle royal, as Savio Vega and Miguel Perez, Jesus and Jose, the Quebecers, and the Truth Commission come out.  With all of those teams around ringside it doesn’t take long for them to start fighting and have that fight spill into the ring, thereby rendering this match meaningless.  This is only notable because Los Boricuas EXPLODES as Perez and Jesus fight.  The crowd works up an “LOD” chant and Ross says that is not going to happen because they have broken up for good…or have they?   Not a very good debut for the Express, but that was not really the goal of this.  Rating:  ½* (1 for 5)

-Jerry Lawler joins the commentary team for the second hour.  I can’t wait until we get Ross and Lawler on a permanent basis.

-D-Generation X and Mike Tyson come out.  Triple H gloats about winning the European title from Owen on last week’s show and he says that even though Chyna will be handcuffed at ringside that won’t change the outcome of their match.  There is a really slutty older woman near the front row that is a big DX fan and Shawn Michaels makes fun of her.  Michaels compares the Austin-McMahon fight to a catfight and says he does not care about what McMahon thinks of him.  Michaels says if Austin wants to win the WWF title he has to go through the greatest champion in history and he also has to deal with Tyson, who says he will knock Austin out if he messes with him.  Michaels says that after WrestleMania D-Generation X will rule forever….forever….Solid promo, but it repeated all of the same talking points we’ve heard for weeks.  1 for 6

-Gennifer Flowers urges viewers to come out of the closet and announce that they are WWF fans.

-The announcers discuss the wicked chair shot Ken Shamrock took at the hands of the Rock last week.  Ross says that at WrestleMania if the Rock is disqualified he will lose the Intercontinental title.

-Faarooq beats Chainz by disqualification when the Rock interferes at 3:36:

Faarooq chooses to fight his own battle without the Nation’s help and he does not have much to worry about as Chainz gets the jobber entrance.  The Rock decides to wander out despite Faarooq’s instructions with a chair and he gets more heat than anyone on the show, as fans pelt him with garbage as he comes down the ramp.  Faarooq has the match in hand after a spinebuster, but the Rock runs into the ring with a chair to hit Chainz.  Faarooq tells him not to do so and prepares for a Dominator, but the Rock knocks him out with the chair, seemingly aiming for Chainz and misses.  Was he really aiming for Faarooq, though?  Both of these guys tried, but the Rock had five times more heat than both of them combined and Faarooq loved the chinlocks in this match.  Rating:  ¾* (1 for 7)

-A video package recaps the Bradshaw-Barry Windham feud.

-Bradshaw beats Barry Windham (w/Jim Cornette) with a school boy at 3:05:

The Rock N’ Roll Express occupy seats near the front row for this match, which is puzzling because they are talent so they should just be able to walk out and watch the match by the entrance at the very least.  In the old days this would be perfect midcard fodder for WrestleMania, but the feud has largely been ignored for the last few weeks and they must have felt the need to just blow it off here.  Windham actually takes off his entrance gear for this one, so you know it’s important.  The Express threaten to come over the guardrail after Cornette and that distracts Windham, enabling Bradshaw to win in the weakest way possible.  After the match, the New Midnight Express run down and help Windham do a small beatdown on Bradshaw before the Rock N’ Roll Express make the save.  I would have given this a point, but the ending was terrible.  Rating:  *½ (1 for 8)

-Muhammad Ali’s guest referee performance at WrestleMania I is the M&M WrestleMania Millennium Moment.

-D-Generation X and Mike Tyson are shown conversing and having fun in the locker room.  The announcers hype DX’s public workout in Times Square on Thursday.

-Sable is awarded a plaque for making the January 1997 edition of RAW magazine the highest selling ever.  Sunny is supposed to get one as well, but is “under the weather,” and the crowd boos that out of the building, which makes me wonder who the more popular “diva” at this time was among the fan base.  It’s like the Shawn Michaels-Bret Hart feud among fans, in that you favored one over the other.  I came down on the side of Bret and Sunny.  Marc Mero says he is going to let Sable have her moment and leaves, but that lets Luna Vachon run down and nail Sable with her plaque and rip her dress.  This segment was notable at the time because it exposed Vince Russo and “Vic Venom” as the same person.  Venom was a smarkish writer that wrote columns for WWF and RAW Magazine and had a short-lived newsletter along the lines of the Wrestling Observer.  Russo was the WWF Magazine editor at the time and while people have problems with elements of his booking, his editing made WWF Magazine a great read in the mid-1990s.  In fact, Russo wrote a column in WWF magazine after this where he blasted fans for fooling them with the Venom character, which I swear was what informed the “It was me all along!” part of the Higher Power angle of 1999.  2 for 9

-Non-Title Match:  Steve Austin beat The Rock (Intercontinental Champion w/The Nation of Domination) with the Stone Cold Stunner at 8:25 shown:

Somewhat interesting that the main event of WrestleMania XV is the last RAW match before WrestleMania XIV.  Austin shows that the little things can work a crowd as he flips the Rock off when granting a clean break in the corner.  This is a surprisingly bland and barely average match, with lots of stalling and deliberate strikes.  Austin actually rolls out of the way of the People’s Elbow, something that rarely happened, and launches a comeback to finish off the Rock.  Since this still got a good crowd reaction I will give this a point, but it is probably the worst Austin-Rock match that I remember seeing.  Rating:  ** (3 for 10)

-After the match, D-Generation X comes out and Michaels tells Austin that he will beat him at WrestleMania.  Michaels feigns coming into the ring to confront Austin, but Triple H convinces Michaels not to do it as we go off the air.

The Final Report Card:  On my scale, this is one of the worst RAW episodes in a while.  It is not that the angles are not hot, but most of them have run out of steam without having a match take place, so this show was everyone treading water before WrestleMania.  The only one where that does not apply, the Bradshaw-Windham angle, had an awful finish on this show too, but that is what I have come to expect from the NWA angle.

Here is our finalized WrestleMania XIV card:

*WWF Championship Match:  Shawn Michaels (Champion) vs. Steve Austin with Mike Tyson as guest enforcer
*Intercontinental Championship Match:  The Rock (Champion) vs. Ken Shamrock and if the Rock is disqualified he loses the title
*WWF Tag Team Championship Dumpster Match:  The New Age Outlaws (Champions) vs. Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie
*European Championship Match:  Triple H (Champion) vs. Owen Hart with Chyna handcuffed at ringside
*Mixed Tag Team Match:  Marc Mero & Sable vs. The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust & Luna Vachon
*WWF Light Heavyweight Championship Match:  Taka Michinoku (Champion) vs. Aguila
*15 Team Tag Team Battle Royal

Monday Night War Rating:  3.6 (vs. 4.6 for Nitro)

Show Evaluation:  Thumbs Down

  1. "Austin shows that the little things can work a crowd as he flips the Rock off when granting a clean break in the corner."

Little stuff like this gets so overlooked when getting over. Stuff like Vince flipping off the crowd as he's in a neckbrace or Rock holding up the title as hes getting stretchered out of the ring.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I mean that's two pretty awesome guys to stick with a shitty angle like that

    ReplyDelete
  3. Gotta see who wins the 2014 BoD Royal Rumble, brother!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I've always loved the idea of wrestling breaking into other media. Like the Leno stuff from before. I always think any chance you get to have an angle cross over into some other media form it's great, like if, say, Lesnar is on the Stone Cold Podcast and and maybe Stone Cold gets a phone call from CM Punk saying he wants Stone Cold to tell Lesnar, On the air, what a piece of shit he is.

Remember when Bret Hart beat up Will Sasso on Mad TV?

I'd love to see an attack on DBry on Total Divas, for example. Stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  5. There's a lot they could steal from real sports for story lines like concussions, PEDs, and spygate

    ReplyDelete
  6. Also a Russo style angle based on jerry Sandusky would be gold

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think they did the concussion thing ahead of time with good ole' moppy. You're Welcome!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Or Mankind offering Vince a sip of his Big Gulp after the Undertaker and Kane broke Vince's leg.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'd like to see money worked into more angles too. Like fighting for a better contract or the old Stan Hansen gotta feed my fat wife stuff

    ReplyDelete
  10. I.E when a wrestling angle breaks over into other things. Like when Hogan beat up Leno on The tonight Show, Bret Hart beat up Will Sasso on Mad TV, and so on.

Like if Bray Wyatt pops up on Total Divas and beats him up or something, or even at like, The E! entertainment awards or something, that'd be a cool way to create some buzz.

And they wonder why Toronto has turned into bizzaro world...

    ReplyDelete
  12. You just broke my brain.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That would be really hard to follow though

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'd like to see them mention winner's purse during random Raw matches again. By the way, how you enjoying 2nd place again?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well with the WWE constantly reminding us of every single thing that happens on every single show, I think we could pick up on it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They could rebook it with a feud over conditioner or have divas fight over shampoo. Still lots of gold to mine from that great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Not a big fan. I'd prefer to be #1!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah, I need more shower rape with kids in my wrestling! Is a thing nobody has ever said until now.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've never heard that about Eugene, but now that you mention it, it kind of makes sense...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I hope I live long enough to see the heyman monster with an unbeaten streak and a little dude with a crazy finisher angle.

    ReplyDelete
  21. They already tried that. The wrestler took it a little too far with bibles and weight lifting machines.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I just watched a few youtube promos from it. What. The. Fuck.

I can't tolerate Cornette anymore but I'd love to hear him go on a 5 minute rant on this one

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yea. I wish he would have gone into more detail but he did mention specifically the part of hhh being Eugene favorite wrestler, him following certain guys around, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How about a crafty heel digs up some dirt and reveals that a reclusive, hideous, physically scarred but friendly giant mute once got drunk at a party, crashed his car and then had sex with his dead passenger.

    Heel wins.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I want to see a storyline about Undertaker possessing another wrestler after he retires. That way you can keep the streak going forever.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Holy shit, you have the greatest username of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Leno and Mad TV were so terrible. Why would anyone want more of it?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Take a fucking guy you want to push, put him on a Goldberg undefeated streak for a year, then book him against Taker at WM. Do it with Reigns next year. It's seriously an impossible thing to fuck up

    ReplyDelete
  29. Let's see...we've seen 2 crucifixions, a hanging, necrophilia, druggings, attempted suicides, and a heart attack on live TV.

That about covers all of my interests. Nothing left for me to get excited about.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have no idea why they haven't had a wrestler go after Goldberg's streak. It would instantly put him in the main event. Guy doesn't even have to be undefeated, just have him go 190 or whatever it was and 0.

    ReplyDelete
  31. People also have been killed! Kayfab and otherwise!

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's such an easy storyline. They could even throw some money at Goldberg to wrestle the guy when he starts getting close to his record.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't know why the don't do it with Ryback. Own those Goldberg chants.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Fuck yea. Cornette always bashes undefeated streaks by saying there's never gonna be a good way to end them and that it prevents wrestlers from getting over on their own merit.

Fuck that. Goldberg was one of the most over guys ever, had no gimmick, and really couldn't cut a promo. Undefeated streaks work

    ReplyDelete
  35. The men fighting over a woman angle needs to be done more. Successful ones were jake/rude, she was mine before she was yours, angle/hhh, Matt hardy/edge.

    ReplyDelete
  36. No mention of the golden standard of that angle, Christian/Trish/Jericho?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yea, also do the Marc Mero jealous paranoid thing with women also. One of my favorite characters ever

    ReplyDelete
  38. How about the guy who finished his match bumps into the guy coming out for the next match and they get into an argumen which leads to a feud? Its an easy way to turn a guy face when done with two heels, like Slaughter vs. Sheik

    ReplyDelete
  39. If there is ever a thread screaming for a jesse Baker appearance...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Friend of mine said the same thing... he thinks that "Undertaker" is more about the "Undertaker gimmick" than it is anything Mark Calloway did with it... I disagree... but its not totally without merit.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Everyone take note at how the #1 draw spurred the conversation here.

    ReplyDelete
  42. VIKING SPACE LORD BROCK LESNAR avatar returns in honor of my returning to my throne.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Don't they do something like this in NJPW? A gimmick just keeps getting passed on and on,, guys fight over the right to the gimmick, etc.? It could definitely work with the Deadman/Taker gimmick

    ReplyDelete
  44. VIKING SPACE LORD BROCK LESNAR enslaving the galaxy is a storyline I'd like to see.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think it would be goofy in the right kind of way.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And then our galaxy savior Daniel Bryan saves the day.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That's an interesting thought. It really is the last "gimmick wrestler" to really still be an attraction. Could someone else have gotten It as over? I don't know

    ReplyDelete
  48. I got a joke. VIKING SPACE LORD BROCK LESNAR and Ultimate Warrior walk into a bar. VIKING SPACE LORD BROCK LESNAR rips out Warrior spine and erotically asphyxiates himself.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Maybe. But keep it around this long and keep it relevant? No way.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Not funny,try something else.

    ReplyDelete
  51. It is fucking hysterical.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I want to see a storyline where Undertaker announces he's done with the streak. His body has seen too many battles and he is walking away from WWE, undefeated at Wrestlemania.

Vince McMahon or Triple H says "Like Hell you're done. You realize how much money you putting the streak on the line makes us? You've got at least three or four more left in you for god's sake. You only wrestle once a year dammit! Are you saying you can't recover it a full year?"

"When you're 48, you're lucky you CAN recover from a match with a young buck like CM Punk!"

"Fine, you wanna walk away, huh? Then walk away. But I'll promise you that the legacy that you love. That undefeated streak you worked so hard to build--that it gets LOCKED IN A DAMN VAULT! None of the matches will ever be aired again, announcers will be barred from talking about it, that streak DVD is hauled from shelves, you're taken from our website....Oh, and one more thing, you will NEVER be in the hall of fame"

"You low son of a bitch. You're gonna make it so my own kids can't even know what I've accomplished?"

"You're DAMNNN right, unless you get in that ring this year, and you take on BROOOOCCCCK LESSSSSNAARRRR!"

    ReplyDelete
  53. And next week things get real good

...is THIS a good use of the Gray Ring of Indifference?

    ReplyDelete
  55. There's alot you can still do with the streak. I LOVED the idea Scott threw out awhile ago about Taker somehow getting sucked into the authority angle amd becoming heel HHHs avatar. Fans would be torn between rooting for the streak and face Taker and the heel faction winning. The drama would be fucking awesome

    ReplyDelete
  56. Porn-Peddling Jef VinsonJanuary 14, 2014 at 3:16 PM

Lesbian angle. The answer is ALWAYS a lesbian angle. TNA fucked up the Winter/Angelina storyline. They could have used the whole vampire story line and had a twist on the lezzie angle.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Mickie/trish was good,oh yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Didn't they try to make another Undertaker, like 3 times now?
    1. Underfaker - Though he was just so Taker could get a vacation or some nonsense.
    2. Kane...sort of - Though they never intended him to be a replacement. Or stick around long. Or...hmm.
    3. Mordecai. - Remember Mordecai? Dude was off the hook.

    ReplyDelete
  59. This isn't mine, but it's one of my favorite wacky, hasn't-been-done-before gimmick ideas.
    It's from: http://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/1spxv6/gimmick_id_like_to_see_a_deranged_time_traveler/

Gimmick I'd like to see: a deranged time traveler who may or may not be telling the truth

Catchphrase: "I know how this ends."

At first he isn't taken seriously, except for his ring skills. His promos are cryptic and weird. "I've seen things. You won't believe what I become in the WWE. You have no idea."

Other wrestlers like to tease him. "If you're actually from the future, tell me who wins the main event tonight." He repeats his number one rule: that he can't reveal what he knows or else the timeline will become altered and mess everything up.

He gives a new twist on the excuse-making chickenshit heel. When he loses a big match, the babyface makes fun of him. "I thought you knew the future. Didn't see that coming?" He says he knew. It was his destiny to lose the match. That he could easily beat him if he wanted to, but it would have disrupted the timeline.

You could also make it interesting by implying that he's telling the truth sometimes. Example: a tag team is hanging out backstage. He comes up, stares at them, and laughs. They want to know what's so funny. He just says, "Wait and see." This causes paranoia between the team, leading one to eventually turn on the other.

Likewise you could use him as a way to foreshadow angles. Like freaking out a heel guy and a face girl by implying they become a couple, then later on they do. Or chiming in on other guys' feuds to hint at the outcome or surprises. The writers could use him as a way of teasing big angles while not knowing the exact outcome that far in advance. So that when something goes down, his words become retroactively true.

Then it all culminates with his big face turn. He swoops in and saves the day against a monster heel. He says he's been dying to tell them all along how he knew he was destined to be their hero and redeem himself from all of his horrible actions.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Heel Manager replaces Heel Wrestler with New, Better Heel Wrestler. Depending on the people involved and who the crowd likes better, you can have the old wily veteran cheat to win over the stronger, faster newcomer, or you can have the newcomer squash the living hell out of the previous main heel for instant elevation, or both guys can turn on the manager who's pitting them against each other and using them both to make more money.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yea. I'm gonna absolutely need this in my tv before I die

    ReplyDelete
  62. It would be especially if they started it a year or more in advance. For example, have the time traveler be part of the crew for a while so that he can refer back to past appearances that no one noticed.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Don't like the ending. Everything else sounds awesome though.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Or he can just watch TV?

    ReplyDelete
  65. This feels like the perfect gimmick for Dean Ambrose.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Interesting. But will be hard to make this work on tv.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Man, that mordecai thing bombed hard. I was a fan. I don't think you can really alter the gimmick that much, it's pretty perfect as is. If you passed it on essentially exactly as ot is it could work I think

    ReplyDelete
  68. I mean have him be part of the on-screen ring crew for a year or more before he makes his in-ring debut. You know, like time-traveling "Daniel Bryan". He can claim that he went back to Summerslam 2014 to right a wrong. Then when people go back and watch Summerslam 2014, "Holy shit, there he is. He's the bell keeper!"

    ReplyDelete
  69. I liked this so much, it warrants another reply.

The eventual payoff, however you do it, of it actually being revealed if he does or doesn't know the future would be huge.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Rooster/Brawler? Money Inc./Nasties/Disasters?

    ReplyDelete
  71. There was a related thread on reddit recently where someone put together a grand unifying theory about Bryan, 1989 Bryan, Bray Wyatt, Nexus, and a random Yes! sign from a 1999 or 2000 RAW.
    http://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/1up8vj/my_absurd_daniel_bryan_and_bray_wyatt_time_travel/
Of course we didn't get that, but who knows, maybe that is the angle that was apparently called off and cut short last night.

    ReplyDelete
  72. You, sir, need to watch Chikara if you like time traveling wrestlers.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Mordecai was one of the many things that made me abandon WWE until Summer 2011.

    ReplyDelete
  74. They tried doing it a little with Cena but it's such a great basic angle that they never really do:

have a monster kill and injure a face. Said heel then dominates the roster. Show the face questioning his resolve and desire to come back. Show him working out, rehabbing, etc. Face comes back amd conquers. Kinda like the older Hogan story arch.

    ReplyDelete
  75. NCAA Champion wrestler comes in wrestling exclusively amateur style, pins everyone in under 30 seconds while badmouthing professional wrestling and its fans.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Dawn Marie/Torrie Wilson was better.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Authority figure is caught on camera buying something illegal, let's say cocaine, and has his picture with said illegal thing plastered all over the wwe website and magazine. Then have authority figure swear it isn't real.

Have a shady secret group promise they have video proving they the authority figure did in fact but those illegal things. They can disappear after a week or so, just to create intrigue. Even spread a rumor that they "disappeared".

Months later have the authority figure admit to wrong doing.

A couple months later, have the authority figure trip over a lady, and get drunk at a couple public appearances. Basically have the guy act like a real life Homer Simpson.

    Print money.

    ReplyDelete
  81. But with e-mail, having accounts with the website already, etc... there's no need to run a "Get Well Cena" campaign because there really isn't a mailing list anymore.

*Sadly, most letters were discarded in various campaigns to help wrestlers or wish them the best only to keep the addresses for a WWF catalog mailing list

    ReplyDelete
  87. Just to take this further, you can repeat the dynamic from the infamous Taker/Yoko match, only with Taker winning but sustaining a hell of a beating, leading to another promo "from beyond," before Taker's "body" lights up in a flash ... to reveal he's regenerated into [insert guy smarks would know from NXT].

Is that true, though? I wrote a "Get Well Hulk" letter when I was a kid, and I mailed it in and everything. Later I got a thank you card, supposedly from Hogan of course, but I never received another bit of mail from the WWF again. I wouldn't have minded, frankly.

What does Kevin Nash's old gimmick have to do with this? :)

  96. How did you get back in the lead?

    ReplyDelete
  97. So did Jim Herd ever actually get the ding dongs gimmick on tv? Because that would have been interesting

    ReplyDelete
  98. A little shrewd political maneuvering. I'm 1993 hulk hogan!

    ReplyDelete
  99. It's seriously one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in wrestling.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Earthquake and hogan ran this baby all the way to the bank, and managed to undercut the ultimate warriors heat on the way

    ReplyDelete
  101. I hope you're gaining heat here so our straight edge vs non straight edge stipulation match draws record numbers.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  108. Is this true? Those tricky wwe marketing gurus. I Def wrote Hulk a few letters as a little kid

    ReplyDelete
  109. Nicely done Jim herd, nicely done.

    ReplyDelete
  110. That is the first major angle I really remember getting into as a kid. Fuck 5 star matches, gimme fat John Tenta in a blue 1 piece and I'm good.

    ReplyDelete
  111. So Brock starts jerking off? Is that what happened? He pumped this up in another thread like it was the best post ever. Plus it'd autoeroticic asphyxiation, unless warriors dead body was doing it for Brock.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Is he talking about taking a shit? Because I'm still the #1 guy around these parts.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Then the bartender asks, "Repeat?"

    ReplyDelete
  114. The big fat heel is such a wrestling staple and I want it brought back

    ReplyDelete
  115. Great point about Russo and his contributions to WWF Magazine. For a kid who grew up reading the Apter mags, some of the stuff Russo was writing in the mid/late 90's was mind-blowing to me.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Was this the first full singles match for Steve Austin since he broke his neck? I know he wrestled at survivor series and rock bottoms both those were 5 minute matches with lots of gimmicks. Strange they would have this match before wrestlemania if they wanted to keep austin healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  117. How about bringing back the piledriver, booking it as a killer finish, and letting a midcard guy destroy people with it? Axel laying people out with the piledriver would make him a bit more interesting. As long as he can do the move safely, and they aren't letting guys like Ryder kick out of it, when somebody DOES kick out(Cena probably), it'll be a big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yes, this was Austin's first full singles match on RAW in 1998. Amazing how they managed to keep him hot while keeping him out of the ring for so long.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Hell, they got the FULL NELSON over as a deadly finish in a year after 1979. It's always a good way to get a guy over.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I pitched this idea last year to the blog and got mixed feelers.

You know how Japan carries the legacy of certain gimmicks such as Tiger Mask etc. right?

Well, what if they did that with The Undertaker. Have the current Undertaker as Mark Calloway face a new Undertaker and have him defeat Mark at WrestleMania to carry on the Undertaker name.

Of course, the idea is far more complex than I explained it. You would have to find a really but reaaaaaally fucking good candidate to carry on the Undertaker legacy and you would have to kinda break the 4th wall and start calling Mark Calloway by his christian name but I think it'd be fun :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. If Kizarny used this (and didn't suck in the ring), it would have been GOLD.

How about a vigilante-type. He takes care of all the heel wrestlers who have not had their proper comeuppance, injuring these guys to the point where careers might be in jeopardy. So crazed with justice that even the faces want nothing to do with him.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I want to see a heel built around the idea of White Knighting. He can get on people's nerves by defending any and every cause in an excessively whiny way. At heart, he's an okay dude, but we hate him because he's just so fucking annoying about whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Another perfect gimmick for Dean Ambrose.

    ReplyDelete
  126. One of my dreams is to see Tim Tebow in the wwe as a sanctimonious heel with this gimmick

    ReplyDelete
  127. Right; as long as they push the move as a killer, it can work. It helps if it's a high impact move(DDT, piledriver, etc.), but if they decided they wanted to get the abdominal stretch over, they could do it.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Also The Masked Superstar gimmick needs to make a comeback. It's bizarre that only Mexican, Spanish and Puerto Rican wrestlers wear masks in America. You'd also think that with the way Rey's mask sells, they'd want to at least take a chance on creating their own version of that success. I also think Chris Masters would be perfect for this role as he has the stink of the midcard clinging to him and it would give him the chance to recreate himself.

    ReplyDelete
  129. This idea is no buys.

The reason this works in Japan (one of the reasons, aside from cultural differences) is that most of the time, the gimmick getting passed on involves a mask and ornate ring gear. When you look at Tiger Mask XXVII, you see Tiger Mask. You know it's a new guy, but you SEE Tiger Mask.

The Underfaker would get shit on right out of the gate. Then people would claim Vince stole it from the Dark Knight Rises. No. It'd be awful.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Yeah, the Superman/Doomsday storyline seemed natural for Cena and Lesnar, but they screwed it up.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I still do NOT understand why they didn't build to an eventual Cena-Lesnar II with a Lesnar win there. Like, I can understand Nash-Punk and cannot understand the thought process that led to Cena winning.

    ReplyDelete
  132. The Rougeaus recast for the new millennium.

Something like "The Real American" Foreign-Sounding Name. He draws heel heat by parodying America's tendency towards jingoism by being excessively obnoxious about how he's the true spirit of America. Over time his actions become endearing, because America. You can get a face turn out of it when he finally does something genuinely heroic. Eventually another heel turn when he turns his back on America. Best as a comedy heel in the vein of Santino.

    ReplyDelete
  133. This screams of something Vince would make good ol JR do

    ReplyDelete
  134. Another easy way to start a feud:
Take two midcard guys who have solid chemistry in the ring and throw them in a best of seven series. You can probably elevate them both in the process too.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I get the idea of not wanting your top guy jobbing back to back huge ppvs. Also the idea of not wanting cena jobbing to a guy who was only sig ed to a 1 year deal at that time has merit but it was so short sighted and retarded. Have Brock go over in extreme rules, stretcher cena out then build to a cena win at SS or whenever. The coukd have gotten so much mileage out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  136. This definitely works for their 50/50 booking scheme, especially if Match 7 ends in a non-decision like a countout or double DQ. Both guys can then just shrug and forget about it.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Yeah, but Cena could take the losses without losing heat and it would have made his whole "needing redemption" thing mean something.

A guy loses a WM main event to the guy he's been pseudo-shoot-sniping with, gets brutalized and put on the shelf a month later by Brock Lesnar and now has to fight his way back into the picture after suffering an injury? That's a shitty year that requires redemption.

He loses to the Rock, beats Lesnar clean, suffers an arm injury that he sells for less than 24 hours and then waits about 9 months for a rematch with the Rock?

Poor thing, someone get him a fucking fruit basket.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Savage-Steamboat. One of the best angles ever.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Yea. The whole thing was just odd. A part of me thinks either the original outcome got changed, there was a political power play, or something else. Cena cutting the "im going away for awhile" promo afterwards and the whole worked shoot thing they tried leaking about brock afterwards just dont add up.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Porn-Peddling Jef VinsonJanuary 14, 2014 at 6:27 PM

If anything he should mentor someone like Roman Reigns and give him the rub that way, not take the whole gimmick.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Porn-Peddling Jef VinsonJanuary 14, 2014 at 6:29 PM

IT would be hard to get whoever is trying to be Adebesi to wrestle and keep that little hat on.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I like the idea but nothing can make Curtis Axel interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I still think Cena was going to take time off after ER2012, but they convinced him after the fact to stick around. The Brock temper tantrum thing was... I don't know. Maybe their attempt at selling the idea of Brock being in an unclear contract situation with the WWE?

So much bullshit in that whole debacle.

    ReplyDelete
  145. tag team double turn - but not in the Demolition/Powers of Pain way:

let's say the consisting of worker John Doe and Jack Doe (faces) loses to Mr. X and Mr. Y (heels) because John got pinned.

Jack is frustated and attacks John after the match turning him heel. at first X and Y join the fun because they are heels. but after some moments Y thinks "it's enough" and tries to persuade the others to stop which they don't.

so Y finally does what's right and saves John by fighting off the other two guys, turning him face. after that you could easily run a program with the two newly formed teams.

The problem with Mickie/Trish is that Mikie didn't turn Trish out.

  148. the most non-pg gimmick ever: a pedophile.

have him come in as a babyface that interacts with the younger fans a lot (for example like someone like Rey). eventually he is gradually turned creepier and creepier over time until it is clear that he has "bad intentions" (if done right there wouldn't even be the need to spell it out).

    ReplyDelete
  149. Yea. Its such a basic easy wrestling angle and often makes both guys look better in the long run

    ReplyDelete
  150. the gay powerhouse: would be a pr dream come true (the opposite of the Billy and Chuck debacle). have a powerhouse babyface like Batista have another young worker as a manager. than that guy gets absolutely destroyed. in the process, the powerhouse guy reveals that his managers is actually his boyfriend and he will smash the heels for injuring him.

(essentially let him be the usual babyface musclehead but let him being gay be just another side to his personality)

    ReplyDelete
  151. A few stories I'd love to see return:
    1) The Rick Rude/Jake Roberts feud involving Jake's wife. Just do it almost exactly like it and boom. Money.
    2) The Bret Hart champion (more so IC than world) where they take on any and all challengers...and then proceed to put on wrestling clinics week in, week out.
    3) Bob Orton's cast or D-Lo's chest protector. I really miss this one. Someone who claims an injury but keeps wrestling using the "protection."
    4) Not so much a story, but a style. I miss the dirt cheap heels that would do things like grab the ropes during rest holds/submissions, use blinding powder, etc.

    A few new ideas:
    1) A woman's wrestler who wrestles with the boys. And honestly, it's why I keep wishing Karma would return. She's huge, bigger than half the male roster and would be absolutely believable. Similarly...
    2) A wrestling version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Have a female wrestler dress up as a male wrestler. Don't play it up as obvious, just make her look like one of the boys in every way possible. Though I doubt you could keep that kind of secret down for long. I just think it'd be a fun story to play with.
    3) A Peacekeeping group. A group of faces that work as a dedicated security in case of wild brawls or to stop interference. A face version of The Shield in some ways, I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  152. That would fantastic PR. You'd certainly win a lot of new fans among the LGBT groups.

    ReplyDelete
  153. so this must be the exact moment Owen stopped bothering? How is he not on this show?

On another note: I do like how loose ends are being tied and discarded and new ones are being made to grow.

    ReplyDelete
  154. I would never trust vince to do it in a non tacky way tho.

    ReplyDelete
  155. A friend of mine was in a backyard fed when he was much younger and they actually HAD a pedophile gimmick among them. He had a painted-on tattoo on his arm that said "I Heart Kids" and would gallop to the "ring" licking the kids clothing section from a Sears catalogue.

    ReplyDelete
  156. exactly. and I think it could work if you totally avoid making him act like the gay cliches usually used in wrestling (either being "prissy" or a total "pervert").

    ReplyDelete
  157. ^This. Unless they made absolutely sure it was done in good taste, I wouldn't trust MOST wrestling businesses to do this with any modicum of tact.

    ReplyDelete
  158. lol. that's way less "subtle" then I envisioned it, though.

    ReplyDelete
  159. True. Wrestling by nature is personalities and traits dialed up to 11. Itd be really hard to keep it outta the corny or tacky ballpark.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Owen was nursing a bum ankle, so he was probably not cleared to compete. Ken Shamrock suffered a legit concussion on the previous RAW as well (from that wicked Rock chair shot), so that's why he wasn't here either. It made for quite a weak show as you can see.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Deaf gimmick where the pro wrestling matches turn into shoots because the guy can't hear what's going to happen next.

    ReplyDelete
  162. instead of letting Cena kicking out of it, you could even have him simply avoid it (using the piledriver example: by backbodydropping the other guy). so while the other guy (Axel or whoever) got beat, there would still be some doubt if Cenas could have kicked out if Axel had hit his finishing move.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Minor detour on that. I have been in a debate with a friend about music in the middle of a match. Isn't the music more of a recent thing, like in the past 2 or 3 years? For as long as I could remember, when there was interference, the guy would either run out or come out to watch on the ramp. But he swears that it's always been done.

I hate that the music is played mid-match... doesn't make sense that they would play music in the middle of a match, especially back when it was presented as an athletic contest.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Dead Zone gimmick where a man and can warn certain superstars about future burials

    ReplyDelete

The Rocky III angle: After fucking with the Bella no one likes Cena goes all Hollywood. They are on the verge of becoming Kim and Kanye. Meanwhile a new heel is destroying everyone. Cena wrestles him and gets murdered. Cena takes time off to heel and get himself together. This can play out on that Total Divas show.

  178. I really think the best way to get heat from the modern, 'sophisticated' fan is to go to the Memphis cheap heat extreme. Nobody respects a coward, so throw salt and use phantom foreign objects in such a cheap way the people can't even respect it.

  187. One look at the wrestlemania match in a week between sable and mero vs goldust and Luna and its not hard to see which diva would own the fans for more than a year. ReplyDelete
  188. Yea. Such a great little moment. With everything being do over scripted now you don't really get any of that stuff

    ReplyDelete
  189. I still can't believe that so many people think Sheamus was always supposed to win that Rumble, even though it meant a completely left-field dropping of Silent Jericho and Jericho ended up challenging for a title anyway.

I still would have booked that Rumble for maximum troll value. Have Sheamus and Orton in there with one entrant left. Sheamus goes to Brogue Kick Orton out, Orton sidesteps a bit, goes to dump him, Sheamus holds onto him, both topple out. Give the crowd about 10 seconds to get hip to what's going to happen, do the countdown as the announcers go apeshit about this has never happened before.

Lights out, JERICHO, he marches to the ring all smiles, jacket off, hops in, the bell rings, plays to the fans, jacket on, back up the ramp.
