Good post. Sure the royalty stuff probably pissed Vince off but that seems like a small transgression. It's just odd that Vince held such a grudge about stuff that all seemed to be done within bounds.

ReplyDeleteYeah I think the comment was just meant to be funny. Plus he probably didn't plan on bringing Jarrett in since he and Russo tried to make him a main event level guy and he failed in WWF and WCW. There were bigger fish to consider. Ditto the Luger thing. Definite heat from the Nitro debut but Luger was washed up and wasn't lighting business on fire. If Vince thinks money can be made he will usually sign someone regardless if heat (Hogan, Bret, Sable).

ReplyDeleteMight as well have called it the Bret Hart Show. Other than his three matches, there's nothing left to really check out, other than Hogan doing a going-away job or Yoko. It's a fun show from start to finish, but in terms quality wrestling, Bret vs. Anyone is the only matches to pay attention to.

That's what some stories say. I've heard he demanded $150,000 but then he's said that was what was already owed to him. I'm not sure who to believe, really, his contract ran out the day before the match. By all accounts the office over-looked that his contract was expiring, and Jarrett wasn't bringing it to anyone's attention for some reason. That reason possibly being so he could walk into No Mercy, point out his contract was expired and ask for a large sum of money to drop the title. I mean, he says he only wanted his royalties paid up front but he surely wanted to be paid something for working the match to, right?

ReplyDeleteI managed to catch the Hogan vs. Lesnar "Best of Smackdown" episode over the weekend. I swear, 2002 Smackdown ages better and better everytime I see it. The Smackdown Six stuff is obvious, but even the show from late June that featured Hogan vs. Jericho before Benoit and Eddie switched brands was great as well."
ReplyDeleteAnyway, about the show, Hogan vs. Lesnar is still an awesome match to watch from an experimental standpoint, and man did Hogan EVER do the job there. The 6-man that proceeded it was topnotch as well, featuring Edge/Cena/Mysterio vs. Benoit/Eddie/Angle, and the aftermath featured Angle's classic "12-year-old" line.
Sigh... I love this Network. :)

ReplyDeleteYep, Brock does need to cause damage. The one positive is, while Taker has had the edge in the other 2 confrontations, he used mind games, or the element of surprise. So Brock hasn't looked THAT bad yet.
ReplyDeleteIt actually started years earlier when Austin was a rookie and working for jerry Jarrett. Austin like many others never liked Jeff or his attitude. When Jeff returned in 97 and cut his "shoot" promo on raw and called Austin blasphemous for 316, Austin freaked out on him. Austin thought Jarrett went too far and a comment like that could affect his character and cause religious issues (and that shirt was the hottest selling T-shirt ever then). So Austin told Russo and McMahon that Jarrett can fuck himself and he ain't working a program with him. Russo tried a few times in 99 but Austin vetoed it. I'm sure the Debra situation didn't help either
ReplyDeleteI second this. Some guys just aren't good for the legend roundtables. Flair is horrible. Hayes talks over and interrupts other guys too, but at least has funny stories and doesn't take himself as seriously as Flair.

I like Lawler on the Roundtables WAY more than I've ever liked him on commentary.
Just for the lulz, I'd love to see a roundtable of JR, Heyman, Bischoff, and Russo. Foley can moderate, since he gets along with all of them.

The book/short story The Running Man is better. But at least in the movie Arnold avenges all those young girls Dawson molested on the Fued.

ReplyDeleteHe gets very annoying, but the nWo eventually became almost as bad for WCW as it ever was good. It was a crutch for lazy writing, which you could actually compare the Horsemen to. Great initial run, watered down over time for diminishing returns.

ReplyDeleteThe story probably should have been "Brock doesn't care about the Streak, he just wants to end Undertaker's career" which would allow Brock to demolish him in the match and look like the monster he always should have been and then out of desperation Taker catches him with the Hell's Gate and taps him out with his last bit of strength. Brock looks good, Taker keeps his Streak, everyone wins. Yeah, I know that's the booking from the second HHH/Taker match but it's not plagiarism if you're stealing from yourself...right?
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or does RAW have more commercial breaks than ever before? You watch old 1990s RAWs and there were fewer commercial breaks during matches and those matches went 6-8 minutes. Matches still take that long, but we seem to get a commercial break in between.

Does anyone know which service seems to have more/better issues backlogged?

ReplyDeleteJarrett did "leave" in 1995, heading back to the USWA for seven months. There's nothing about money in the article, but this is Wiki. His first trip to WCW was indeed over a contract dispute, in October 1996.

ReplyDeleteMany people have done FAR worse to Vince than what Jarrett did, so I've never quite understood the grudge myself. The only thing I can come up with is that Vince has always forgiven/forgotten most transgressions with past talent...if there is money to be made and/or the talent came to him wanting to bury the hatchet and move on. To the best of my knowledge Jarrett has never tried or wanted to come back into the WWE fold, and he certainly isn't any significant source of revenue for the company. Hence, fuck him, I guess.

ReplyDeleteI like listening to guys like Honky Tonk Man openly say they weren't going to do a job or lose the title unless it you made it worthwhile for them to do so. It's not that I blame Jarrett, but by not bringing his contract situation up he put himself in a position where he walked into a pay per view as a title holder where he was supposed to take part in an advertised title defence before jumping to WCW the next day - I don't think he didn't know what he was doing there.

ReplyDeleteSo I was watching Royal Rumble 1989 on the WWE Network. They actually edit out when Demolition pick their numbers out of the....thingy with like 100 numbers in it. It is supposed to be after Bad News Brown and before Jake the Snake. Did they think it would give away the beginning of the Rumble? I hate censorship but understand when they do it for licensing reasons or whatever, but this was edited out for no reason!

He started in WWA (pretty much a beta version of TNA) right after WCW folded. And there's never been any reason to bring Jarrett back, especially today. The guy has never been any kind of draw, and if he showed up on Raw half the people would think "Who?" and the other half would be thinking "Who gives a fuck?"

ReplyDeleteIf you see it on TV, it's a work of some kind, and I imagine that goes for VKM's comments on buying WCW, too. I won't go so far as saying he cleared the comments with Jarrett, but I would be surprised if they were meant to be anything more than a rib.
ReplyDeleteNine times out of 10, we take these comments WAY more seriously than the people involved do.
That he didn't know what he was doing? He knew his contract was expiring, he already made his deal with WCW, he could have mentioned that it was expiring and dropped the title sooner but he likely knew the upper hand it would give him. Growing up in the business doesn't necessarily mean he's above that - Bret Hart grew up in the business and didn't see anything wrong with him handing over the title and sauntering off to WCW.

Keep in mind that a recurring theme I've heard from guys in books, interviews and shoots is that Jarrett is a good midcard guy who honestly believes he's on the same level of mega-stardom as Hogan and Flair. His reign as NWA champ in the first half-decade of TNA made HHH look humble when it came to spotlight hogging and keeping the belt, a push of ego that even Vince couldn't handle so not surprising he'd be wary of working with a guy who believed he should be automatically champ and star of the show.

Jeff Jarrett couldn't draw flies with a mouthful of shit- that has to be a pretty big factor on his not being invited back to the company.
ReplyDeleteOnce he started and headed up a rival promotion, that was just icing on the cake. A lot of wrestlers seem to dislike both Jeff and his father (Bob Holly points this out in his book), which can't help either.

ReplyDeleteLanny Poffo actually gave the reason; he said when Savage left the WWF, there was no heat; however, Savage convinced the Slim Jim people to come with him to WCW, and that's what caused the heat between him and Vince.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit torn on Jarrett's belt holding EARLY in TNA's existence. From 2002 to about 2004, I actually understand it. For one, he was a known name in a sea of relatively unknown talent (outside of Raven, and a few guys who popped in now and then and left just as quickly). More importantly, he was the owner of the company -- since they didn't have a great contract structure, he needed to have a few key guys in place that he could trust not to screw him. People like AJ who wouldn't disappear.
ReplyDeleteSo, to that degree, I get it (which instantly makes him better than HHH in my book -- simply because he had a stake in this and HHH just wanted glory). However, after about 2 years in, when they were well-established, it stopped making sense.
I'm confused -- wasn't the point of the whole Austin 3:16 thing is that it WAS blasphemous? It was started in response to Jake being religious in his angle. Were they hoping people would forget or something?
ReplyDeleteYeah, but they brought in other WCW guys who didn't draw, e.g. Buff Bagwell. That couldn't have been that big of a factor.
ReplyDeleteI can't even pinpoint it, but I always like Jarrett, especially his WCW stuff near the end of their run. As a performer -- I can't say much about him running a company -- he seems like a guy who wants to steal the show (in a good way) whether he's in the midcard or if he's stuck in a flailing company or whatever. Like even if the fans didn't care about him, he busted his butt trying to make them care.

Really, there's a lot of parallels between these two movies:
1.Two best friends who are huge wrestling marks.
2.Said best friends crash their vehicle.
3.One of the two best friends has a wrestling match in a dream sequence.
4.The son/nephew becomes a wrestler despite his father/uncle's objections.
5.Non-fans become wrestling fans.
6.The wrestling pay-per-view ends with a steel cage match.
