"Canada's effect on WWE."
ReplyDeleteUltimately, our biggest effect on WWE has been deciding to cheer for who we want to, not who the company tells us to. That lingering side effect of the Hart Foundation angle has now infected the rest of the audience and has had a direct impact on booking. (Finally)
Jeez, before Kane, Undertaker probably held the record for number of idiotic storylines he was saddled with. And yet he still managed to be one of the top stars of the mid-90s despite it.
ReplyDeleteI will still fight anybody that says Cactus/Sullivan vs Nastys at Slamboree is better than Cactus/Payne vs Nastys at Stampede. To me they are both very good but the Stampede match is clearly better.
ReplyDeleteI forget, what were the rules of the lifeguard match again?
ReplyDeleteThe only things I've heard on Andre not cooperating was he might work stiff or cheap on someone he didn't like. Brutus Beefcake said in a shoot interview that Andre hated Jake and would step on his hair when lifting him so it ripped out. Kamala said Andre was a bit of a dick so he pulled a gun on him and it solved everything. Other than that it wasn't like he wasn't professional. If anything some guys in Japan tried to cheap shot him to get over. I think Maeda kicked at Andre's legs like an asshole. Andre didn't really retaliate except to shit in bathtubs throughout Japanese hotels.
ReplyDeleteIt was essentially a lumberjack match but they called them lifeguards.
ReplyDeleteThere is an interview clip on youtube with Manny Fernandez where he says that Andre hated Hogan and demanded (and got) a lot more money than he normally would have gotten for a match if he was going to put Hogan over and let him slam him.
ReplyDeleteOf course Manny wasn't with the WWF at the time so he must have heard the story second hand , and he has a track record of being less than honest. So, the story might be bullshit, but anyway...
This 8/2 Raw literally looks like it is in a warehouse. These are the sad final days of heel Doink, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteMaeda was a fucking prick. He broke Riki Choshu's orbital bone with an unplanned shoot kick once because he wanted to get himself over as a badass. I'm not aware of any other Japanese guys taking liberties with Andre, although I think there was an incident between him & Brody in a match in Japan one time.
ReplyDeleteI might be thinking of Maeda shooting twice. What an asshole. I really wish the Giant had punched him in the face. Maybe he was worried about yakuza or customs or not being asked back. Haven't heard of the Brody incident. Was that a tag match?
ReplyDeleteHmmm I would take that with a grain of salt. Who would feed Manny that info? I have no doubt Vince gave Andre a fat check for the match including bonuses but I can't see Andre holding him up for extra cash considering the family were essentially his booking office for years and Andre was known to be extremely loyal.
ReplyDeleteI don't care what anyone says. Despite the NOSE, Charlotte Flair is a hottie. I would bury my face in her moist love canal, slap my flesh colored wonder sword across her face, and shoot salty yogurt ropes all over her titties. Not to mention, felching with Emma.
ReplyDeleteDid Satan get banned?
ReplyDeleteAndre the Giant vs Meng vs Brock in a shoot fight...book it
ReplyDeleteNot hard to become a superstar when you're given the coolest entrance and are booked to be pretty much infallible with everyone afraid of you.
ReplyDeleteAnd Hogan will lie and said he slammed all 3.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm watching the Rock Bottom PPV and I see a commercial for WWF Attitude cologne!! How did that memory get deleted from my brain??
ReplyDeleteWhich one of you marks actually bought that and what did it smell like?
Didn't they have a nitro cologne also?
ReplyDeleteWrestling cologne: bring the smell of a trailer park and cigarettes with you everywhere
doesn't Spring Stampede '94 feature Austin v. Muta, as well?
ReplyDeleteand I'm loving these first season episodes of RAW. It's, virtually, all new to me.
"Well brother, I had severely injured my back previously in the fight but I knew I had to summon the inner strength to perform. Putting Brock and Meng on each shoulder, I scooped up Andre and slammed all 3 of them at 1 time. The crowd erupted and it became the highlight of wrestling...brother."
ReplyDeleteIt does include Muta vs. Austin, but it's not the match everyone thinks it should have been. Unmotivated Muta can be ugly.
ReplyDeleteI'm off from work. Nothing on my queue is interesting me right now. Any viewing suggestions?
ReplyDeleteDecember 1995 WWF in your house
ReplyDeleteBill Simmons has completely passed me by. I used to be a huge fan but now he's Rick Reilly. That action movie title belt article was so terrible I could only get about 5 minutes into it. I'm done with him. Sad day, I'll have to find new sports stuff-to read
ReplyDeleteMaeda is a prick but he was absolutely 100% justified in his treatment of Andre. Andre was sloshed and was working under orders from New Japan management to "teach Maeda a lesson," and did that by going for Maeda's eyes. Maeda responded by completely busting the myth of "invincible Andre."
ReplyDeleteNot a defense of Maeda's treatment of Choshu, or a defense of Maeda as a worker. But he was completely in the right in the Andre situation.
I'm not aware of Brody and Maeda ever being in the same promotion. When Brody was in New Japan (which wasn't all that long) Maeda was off in the first UWF.
ReplyDeleteI used to love him but I'm in the same boat. He still does some decent shit every once in awhile but 80% of his stuff I'm just "meh" on.
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about him now are his cousin sal podcasts
Also, Manny vs. Abby was the main event of Starrcade and everyone turned and headed for the exits after the match was over, despite it being the 3rd match on the card.
ReplyDeleteAlso, he was in Vietnam, despite being like 16 when the war ended. Also he played for the '72 Dolphins, and I think he also was goalie for the Wild and the Bruins.
Fact: in the very same Observer issue where Dave reported that Hogan was the new WWF Champion, he also said to expect Hogan vs. Andre in the near future, likely as a Shea Stadium show.
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt in my mind that having Andre backstage to congratulate Hogan and establish himself as Hulk's buddy was done for the express purpose of setting up a match between the two. No doubt whatsoever. Oh, I don't believe they had the whole storyline mapped out at all. Or a solid idea of where or when the match would take place. But it was undoubtedly a plan from the start to establish the two as partners before a split and a match--they had the storyline in their back pocket for when the time was right. Andre had to know what was up right then and there.
Their total combined weight was 2500 pounds, dude!
ReplyDeleteReally boring match.
ReplyDeleteStampede did have a really cool Pillman-Regal match, another good Sting-Rude match (botched ending aside), a bloody Dustin-Buck brawl and a hot crowd.
His 1998 attitude era theme with the guitar riff was always my favorite. His Ministry theme where he's "chanting" was pretty badass too.
ReplyDeleteSounds like he stayed up all night snorting cocaine for this one. Just embarrassing and all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI like Adam Carolla's impression of him. Dead on.
ReplyDeleteHer only problem is that by her face you can tell she's Ric Flair's daughter... tough to turn down a tall blonde though.
ReplyDeleteBut Canada was responsible for Hogan getting a title run in 2002. I was home in Canada in '02, and I dreaded that WM X8 response.
ReplyDelete100% cosigned.
ReplyDeleteThis show is a great example of how shitty and unover Bret Hart was.
ReplyDeleteI definitely love cornette on commertary with Jr at starrcade 89
ReplyDeleteSo this nitron guy with doom was sabertooth in the x men right?
ReplyDeleteI have a problem....there is all this wrestling available and what am I obsessed over? The fact that episode 6 of Raw is not up there and in watching chronological I missed Hulks big return... Anyway I'm continuing on the road to Wrestlemania with Episode 8.
ReplyDeletewow, vince is getting senile and has to ask scott about his own company history now
ReplyDeletelove the story from the warrior dvd of andrea punching warrior in the face in the middle of the ring to get him to chill out
ReplyDeleteBy the time I became a fan Andre could barely move. Yeah he's 8 feet 10 inches tall and over 900lbs but he was damn near a cripple. Why would so many guys be afraid of him then? Back in the 70s and early 80s may have been a different story, but by the time he was working with Jake and Ultimate Warrior, nah.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The 1998 theme for Taker was my favorite Taker theme song as well.
ReplyDeleteHe only had the belt for a month. There was nothing wrong with that.
ReplyDeleteMan I loved shitty '95 WCW.
