Recommended viewing: How about Backlash '99? A decent hardcore match between Al Snow and Hardcore Holly, The New Age Outlaws vs. Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart was pretty good, X-Pac vs. newly-turned corporate heel Triple H was a great match, and Steve Austin vs. The Rock NEVER disappoints. Of course, Ken Shamrock vs. The Undertaker is on there as well, and if you ask me, you either hate that match, or you think it was not given a fair shake the first time.

    You know, I thought those Countdown shows would just be fluff pieces that would have had stuff we've seen 1,000 times over, but they are really, really done well and it presents some of those times in a fresh fashion. Kudos, double-double-E.

    Ah yes, I talked about that Taker/Shamrock match a while ago. if it happened 5 years later, it would have gotten lots of love. But the Attitude Era fans were conditioned to expect "Entrance, Catch phrase, another catch phrase, 1 minute match, run in, next match, entrance, catch phrase, etc etc". So they totally turned on the match for actually having some psychology.

    I always thought Rock vs Austin at Backlash 99 was better than Wrestlemania XV. I think I am going to watch Backlash 99 now.

    It was. The first person shot of Rock getting the double bird followed by the Stunner was worth the price of admission alone. God, those two had crazy good chemistry...

    I was watching the Wrestlemania Rewind for Austin-MIchaels at Wrestlemania XIV, and in the background part of the show that were discussing Shawn's physical and emotional problems in the runnup to the show, and someone brought up Shawn battling his "demons." Perhaps this is just a pet peeve, but can't they just say he was hooked on drugs and that was affecting his mentality at the time? I hate the way they try to tapdance around things like that. It's not like he hasn't acknowledged his past drug use.

    I haven't watched the match in probably 10 years, since I dubbed my VHS over to DVD but remember two things about that match. At one point they are both so incredibly gassed, they start running the ropes in slow motion... but to the credit of the Undertaker, he used the coolest counter to a leg submission that I've ever seen. Looked like half a spin-a-rooni.

    Eh, I don't think it's necessary... plus you'd need another hour just to describe what Shawn was going through mentally at the time. Guy was a wreck, considering everything he had done his entire life was about to end.

    No it was like... Haku?!... to very little crowd response.


    It was just like WWE was fucking with WCW by taking guys without much value just because they could.... and Haku was actually the WCW Hardcore Champion at the time.

    He really was one of the most under-utilized wrestlers ever, both in the WWF and WCW. He must have gotten 10 start-stop pushes, they never really gave him a legit opportunity. (for example, he was turned into King Haku... and jobs to Hercules in the opening match at WM 5, then loses the crown clean to Duggan).

    It is doubly interesting when you consider that if you ask ANYONE from the era who the one motherfucker you legit don't want to fuck with his they will almost always say Haku... you would think he could have intimidated his way into something.

    Rvd vs Lance Storm at GAC 99 is actually really good. You never know with ECW matches but this one is a good example of rvd/ECW craziness at its best.

    I've never seen all of Backlash 99. Thanks for the recommendation.

    Wish they would put up the clash shows or SNMEs. But glad they put up more of the Legends round tables. I watched the episode about hardcore wrestling last night. ECW is kind of ragged on in the episode actually.

    I would seriously call it one of the most logical ever. If one of the strongest guys in the world would head vice your head and squeeze as much as he can... Wouldn't you submit in 0.1 seconds? Plus it seems nearly impossible to escape. What more could you want from a finisher?

    Backlash '99, one of the rare good shows of that year. It was the show WrestleMania should have been. I'd argue it was the 2nd best match Austin and Rock ever had.

    I wasn't a headbutt or a strike to the head so it should have been effective. Remember the psychology comes from a direct strike to the head with your head, not with an object and not with squeezing the head.

    One rumor is that the tape quality of some of the old episodes isn't up to WWE's quality standards.

    Also the rumor about why they started at Episode 26 of ECW instead of the beginning is because that's when Heyman took over booking from Gilbert.

    I've watched the first hour of Bash at the Beach 1997 today. There's a surprisingly good Glacier/Ernest Miller vs. Mortis/Wrath match to open the show. There's also a terrible Steiners vs. Muta/Chono match that has a pretty sweet finish where Scott DDTs Muta off of Rick's shoulders. I remember trying to order this show when it aired but I didn't have the right cable box to order PPVs.

    I always really liked that match and felt it was severely underrated. I dug Shamrock trying to break just about every bone in Takers leg and Taker deciding to fight Shamrock at his own game with submissions of his own was really cool.

    Backlash 1999 was one of the first ppvs I watched when I got the network, the show holds up pretty well given it was a throwaway ppv from 15 years ago.
