But... but they're the WWE's favorite band in the whole world!
ReplyDeleteAccording to some shoots, "Biker Taker" is one of those taboo subjects you can't bring up around Vince...he views it of THAT much of a failure.
ReplyDeleteNever understood the hate for Biker-Taker. He had great matches with Triple H, Flair, RVD, Jeff Hardy, Brock, Angle, (heel) Cena ...
ReplyDeleteWhat's funny is that, in hindsight, his biker phase only lasted for about four years, though it felt like an eternity back in the day. Undertaker gets a pass largely because of the attraction, I think, especially for people who have been watching for a long time. With Shawn Michaels gone now, Undertaker is the last link between the major eras of the last thirty years (Hulkamania, New Generation, Attitude, PG). His longevity is quite impressive as a character, even if he only wrestles one or two matches a year now.
ReplyDeleteAh you are correct sir, thanks. saved me from clicking the wrong show later.
ReplyDeleteFair point, I just meant the baseline booking of power guys hitting big moves. It could at least make a match like that entertaining instead of DUD level.
What's old is new again and back old. He got a few more good years out of it from 07-13, but the character is done for good now. Let me add that this run has been pretty impressive for such a one-note character.
ReplyDeleteIf he was full time I wonder if the crowd would have completely tuned out to it by now?
ReplyDeleteI think so. It's so plug and play now that it's hard to get a month out of it now. Maybe if he decided to show a bit of range it would help some.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. He is a novelty item. His performances are rare now, so it is presented as a big deal. Outside the context of the Streak and his "only comes back for big matches" booking, Undertaker would be obsolete. Not a criticism really, just reality.
ReplyDeleteNot in 2000-01, he didn't. I think that's where a lot of it started. He came back in the heart of workrate-rich upper card (Rock, HHH, Benoit, Angle, Jericho) and occupied a spot he couldn't fill. He didn't have a noticeably great match until HHH at WM 17. The rest of those matches weren't til 2002
ReplyDeleteI fucking hated him when he came back in 2000. They had done so much to get wrestling back in the main events (after a sloppy 1999), with guys like Rock, HHH, Benoit, Jericho, Angle...only for BikerTaker to come back and stick out like a sore thumb. That shitbag band was apropos for him at the time too.
ReplyDeleteHe would have been, without the Streak and working minimal dates. I think he would have been completely obsolete a long time ago without his Wrestlemania Streak.
ReplyDeleteBiker Taker had absolutely awful matches with HHH. King of the Ring 2002 is some negative star repugnant shit. He also never had great chemistry with Brock and I'll be surprised if their Mania 30 match is not a huge disappointment.
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem too. ONLY Undertaker (and HHH) could possibly keep their top, protected spot after a run as shitty as 2000-02. He was bringing nothing to the table while Rock, HHH, Angle, Jericho, Benoit were tearing it up and elevating the main event quality. Anyone else gets unceremoniously dumped from his spot.
ReplyDeleteI still maintain that the ladder match he had with Hardy was complete shit. Though that's my 2 least favorite wrestlers, so I might be a little biased.
ReplyDeleteUnderstood.At least you're being honest.
ReplyDelete1997 is a good example of that. He really got more over by giving promos like an actual human
ReplyDeleteMy feelings on Hardy are more than well known, though I'll admit that Taker has gotten better in his old age ("old" as in 5 years younger than Sting and I think only 18 months older than Boo-tista). For instance, I fucking HATE the HITC match at WM28, but Taker's performance wasn't the issue there, he was fine. Shawn and Hunter, however...
ReplyDeleteSo how's school treating you, John?
So far so good, met up with the veterans and they're pretty cool, much better than the Economy,Physical education and Zoology ones, the first week is considered a integration week, just seminars and tours in the campus. The only problem is the location of the college,it's really far from where I live and paying for the transport is gonna be tough.
ReplyDeleteWhen he returned for his match with HHHRRRNNNGGG at Wrestlemania 27, they seemed to present him as an old gunslinger. Even one of the promos leading up to Mania 28, HHHRRRNNNGGG mentioned the longevity, and his toughness (having a flak jacket tapes to him under his ring gear, to protect broken ribs).
ReplyDeleteIf they presented him as this wily, Clint Eastwood type gunslinger, it'd be fine. The supernatural gimmick got old a while back.
I personally was tiring of his character by late 2009 which is perfect because he became a part timer by 2010.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I feel that, I have a licence but don't own a car. I can just walk to where I work, but pretty much anywhere else I have to depend on other people to try and get me there. Or take a cab, a $15 cab fare here and there is still a lot cheaper than paying $200 a month just for insurance for a car (never mind what it costs to maintain a car) that I'll hardly ever drive. I forget, what is your major?
ReplyDeleteAnd how's life on general treating you? I just got back with my ex, and I know this isn't going to end well, so all the people that keep telling me that need to shut the fuck up about it. It's going to be a hell of a lot of fun up until it inevitably goes to shit, so piss off.
He was completely BRUTAL in 2000 and 2001
ReplyDeleteOkay I believe,I'm happy and anxious at the same time,I don't wanna fuck things up in there.I don't wanna be just another guy that graduates and does nothing after.
ReplyDeleteAt this age and point in his career shouldn't he be the one worried about Brock and not the other way around? A loss won't diminish his legacy but shouldn't he feel some type of way about his end being near? Kind of the way Shawn portrayed his last feud with UT.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about that now, that's still a couple years down the road. Take care of the shit you have to take care of now.
ReplyDeleteHis Booger Red period was when I got really sick of seeing Taker. And I found it appropriate that he was nicknamed after a bloody piece of nose shit during that phase of his career.
