Nope. I'm with you. The only storyline reason that makes sense, is both men were the cornerstones, the backbones of their respective companies. So, let's see who is superior. Problem is, neither man is in the shape necessary for a decent match.
- As previously reported, WWE.com posted a fantasy video game match between The Undertaker and Sting. However, this doesn't mean that there are any plans to actually do an Undertaker vs Sting match. The idea for the video came from the web staff to drum up interest and page hits, not because WWE officials or the creative team told them to do it.
There were a bunch of these on WWE.com, I was to say things like Jake Roberts v. Dean Ambrose (or maybe it was Bray?), CM Punk v. Shawn Michaels and Bad News Brown v. Bad News Barrett. I don't think any of those are going to happen either.
Might as well ask this here; if Sting only wrestled one match in WWE and retired afterwards, who would be his best opponent? I'm thinking either Cena or Orton.
I'd like to see it, just because I'm a sucker for fantasy matches/appearances. Not necessarily Sting/'Taker... in fact, I'd rather it be a different opponent, especially without the streak on the line. But Sting? Yeah, I'd like to see him get a match or two in the WWE.
I'd be interested to see if they could smoke and mirrors their way through some sort of gimmick match but don't think creative could execute the story that would need to be told beforehand.
And I don't get the backlash against the match. Would it be the greatest ever? No. But it'd be as close to Hogan-Rock as we'll ever get, two icons with similar gimmicks having a match that'd get intense heat and thus be extremely dramatic.
I mean... it's the Wrestlemania crowd. They know their history. Fair to say this match, as Taker's 'I've done it all BUT THIS' final match would be huge.
At this point I just want him to sign and start a feud so I don't have to hear these Sting rumors anymore. It's going on fucking a decade that we've been hearing sting/wwe/taker rumors
No. I've said this more than once here before but I'll say it again...Sting/Taker in 2014-15 appeals only to
1) people with unresolved OCD fantasy booking complexes from 1998
2) comic book fans that want this oh so "creepy" goth comic angle brought to life. Of look, they both wear black and are mysterious...WHAT AN AWESOME ANGLE IT WOULD BE!!
Seeing Sting make a surprise appearance on Raw hitting someone with a baseball bat would be awesome for about 10 minutes
If in some universe there would have been an epic WCW vs. WWF Supershow in the late 90's this match would have been must see. Today the match would / will suck. The window ran out about 5 years ago.
I like the creepy gothy comic-book stuff. It's one of the reasons I love gimmicks like Bray Wyatt more than "Generic name that sounds like it came from bad erotic fiction and looks the same as everyone else".
I don't want to see this match, but I still like the gothy characters. I don't think this makes me a bad person! ;)
To be fair, unless we describe Daniel Bryan with a stronger adjective than fantastic I don't think Punk is either. In-ring, the only thing he really has over Bryan is better at swinging weapons and slightly better moves of doom sequence.
Who is this match meant to appeal to? There are no more Sting fans, TNA PPVs are not drawing, TNA live shows are not drawing, the tv shows are not drawing. Undertaker has maybe 1 more big match at the very most and with the streak gone theres nothing to stop him putting over another talent at a different PPV. Why waste this 1 final match on another broken down former wrestler. WWE would have to spend a lot of time building up Sting as a WCW legend, which is time they could spend building up a younger talent.
I'm not sure what you're point is. There can be more than 1 "fantastic" Wrestler in the world. I enjoy Punks in ring work more than Bryans but I realize I'm in the minority
I hate the "Extreme Rules" concept, hate it...all the WCW PPV gimmicks you can bring back and you pick "Uncensored"?!?
And they have a show called "Payback" that isn't the immediate show after Mania where people win rematches from Mania. Tell me that calendar makes sense.
You're only getting upvotes because you're using that as your avatar, and by upvoting you some pathetic bastard thinks they have a chance at having you fly to their location for you to have sex with them.
If Sting HAS to wrestle again, I think a better idea would be for UT and Sting to team up to handle the Wyatts. Let them make shit REALLY creepy, and disguise both old men's weaknesses with an insane tag brawl.
Well, there still shouldn't be this revisionist history about the guy. Sting was one of the main players in WCW and because he doesn't have a WWE Best Of Sting DVD nobody under 20 years old knows how great he was.
What the heck, folks.
But yeah, he was dressing up like The Crow and acting like Jim Carrey.
Oh he's entertaining. However he doesn't come off as a wrestler. He isn't larger than life, he doesn't have a stage presence. He feels like some schmo you randomly bump into on the streets, he feels like a man playing a role not like a wrestler.
Punk is so overrated and define intelligent and beyond that prove it's 99 percent of even those fans. Punk is average or slightly above. It's not just his elbow from his GAS is shit his kicks look awful his mic work when he's not SHOOTING~! or doing the same straight edge promo he's been doing since he was 14 is below average.
His strikes are also sloppy as shit and nothing he does seems to actually have any impact behind it. When Seth Rollins hits his flying knee, Daniel Bryan hits his running knee, Roman Reigns hits the Superman Punch, etc., it LOOKS like he's really hitting the guy. Everything Punk does looks like a cooperative effort to do a pro wrestling move.
The thing that really bothers me today is that online technology allows software engineers to basically "George Lucas" you. That is, they can keep changing the product after you've gotten it. So you buy something, you learn how to use it, you like it, and then they "update" it and screw it all up and make you learn how to use the thing all over again. Drives me insane.
Was digging it til Sting's soundbite. 25+ years hanging around and the best they could find was "the only thing for sure about sting is nothing's for sure"? Stay in Texas, Taker. This won't be worth it
I guess. If I HAVE to get kicked in the nuts, I'd rather it be someone that's bare foot opposed to someone in steel toed shoes. But I'd rather skip the nut kick.
I actually believe that he currently does NOT work a job that puts him in the lime light. He did. He was unhappy. He left. No harm no foul. And actually he didn't leave anyone in the lurch because EVERYONE got a better story with him gone.
the poem about good and evil set the tone for starrcade '97 to be something epic, than of course the match happened.... even with all the shit at the end, I miss WCW like woah especially nowadays when im not really enjoying the WWE product that much.
Yea. I'm 10 times more intrigued buy a Cena/Sting match than a Taker program. Give him Cena or Bray. The problem is that he only has a really short shelf life as an attraction... no way in hell he's going over Cena, Taker or Bray. Then what?
That's like saying star quality isn't real or even the often talked about "it factor" that everyone in the business talks about. They aren't real because you can't quantify them that's just being delusional and being unable to debunk that argument any other w a than by saying "nope it's not real". It's like Republicans talking about evolution (not the triple h version they would love that for of evolution).
When this feud happens, the WWE Universe (composed of 8 year old boys) is gonna ask their parents "Why is the Undertaker beating up a 60 year old Juggalo?"
I live in Central Illinois. For some god damn reason, ICP is still popular here. Plenty of 8 year old boys probably know who they are here, because they have terrible parents.
Yes, but again this is all subjective. Not based in any fact. All opinion. To say definitively someone has "it" or doesn't is ignorant and narcissistic at best.
I always see people on the work commute with the hatchet man logo on their car or truck. I suspect many of these people are undercover juggalos. Once in a while you will see a real juggalo out in public, but it is a rare occasion. I never got the appeal or just "don't get" ICP.
Remember when many of us were shitting all over WCW in the late 90s because they were shoving guys like Hogan and Piper in main events? Or were recently complaining about WWE bringing back and immediately pushing guys like Batista who are out of shape and can barely work at this point?
If Taker can still wrestle a few more matches, time for him to work on putting some people over on his way out. Plenty of talent that could use that rub, and even if his few matches will be plodding * affairs, I'd rather see those be situations that give someone like Reigns or Wyatt a rub, rather than a fantasy booker's match from 15 years ago that'll ultimately achieve nothing.
So WWE.com did a Countdown on this subject awhile ago, which also featured this match, so it's not exactly breaking new ground. I will say that after watching that bit again, I REALLY hate that I live in a world where Rock Vs HBK never happened.
Not a knock...Has anyone ever made more money and done less in a feud than Sting. During the year long Hogan build he literally cut 0 promos, appeared on a a handful of nitros, sat in the bleachers, and swung a Nat a few times.
I was going to say Goldberg (when he didn't talk and just worked minute long matches), but then I remembered that his big 'money' matches were given away on TV
I too love awesome visiuals for pc/video games.... BUT ....that doesn't mean I want the developers to focus so much on them that the game lacks in almost every other department than "presentation" (and that has been the case with so many of the games of the last years).
The constant contact thing has been a game changer. I'm one who assumes people are avoiding me, especially when we've just hung out and I know you carry your phone at all times....
Am I the only person who has zero interest in seeing these two old men wrestle?
ReplyDeleteNope. I'm with you. The only storyline reason that makes sense, is both men were the cornerstones, the backbones of their respective companies. So, let's see who is superior. Problem is, neither man is in the shape necessary for a decent match.
ReplyDeleteI think you're going to have a harder time finding someone who has any interest in watching these two old men wrestle.
ReplyDeleteSo that's why they had Taker lose to Brock to make the Sting match more believable. It all makes sense now!
ReplyDeleteVia the WON:
ReplyDelete- As previously reported, WWE.com posted a fantasy video game match between The Undertaker and Sting. ReplyDeleteMight as well ask this here; if Sting only wrestled one match in WWE and retired afterwards, who would be his best opponent? I'm thinking either Cena or Orton.
ReplyDeleteCena is probably the best "sports entertainer" in the company and has the most name recognition, so I'm going with him.m
ReplyDeleteYeah, I just don't see anyone else.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see it, just because I'm a sucker for fantasy matches/appearances. Not necessarily Sting/'Taker... in fact, I'd rather it be a different opponent, especially without the streak on the line. But Sting? Yeah, I'd like to see him get a match or two in the WWE.
ReplyDeleteI hope he's not getting cold feet about signing.
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested to see if they could smoke and mirrors their way through some sort of gimmick match but don't think creative could execute the story that would need to be told beforehand.
ReplyDeleteWell yes, clearly it means nothing.
ReplyDeleteBring back the legend killer.
ReplyDeleteIt clearly means something, if only because Nothing is still on the phone with The Hurricane.
ReplyDeleteSting looks like he's doing duckface.
ReplyDeleteWhat should we make of the fact that the Extreme Rules logo looks exactly like the Pancrase logo?

Couldn't we just limit it to them cutting promos from cemeteries and rafters?
ReplyDeleteI do.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't get the backlash against the match. Would it be the greatest ever? No. But it'd be as close to Hogan-Rock as we'll ever get, two icons with similar gimmicks having a match that'd get intense heat and thus be extremely dramatic.

I loathe those that actually want to see this match
ReplyDeleteI want Sting locked in a room with Dr Kevorkian
ReplyDeleteThat's okay, I'm not fond of people who think CM Punk is a fantastic wrestler.
ReplyDeleteI'm expecting the "His elbow drop isn't crisp looking enough" as the generic response here
ReplyDeleteAt this point I just want him to sign and start a feud so I don't have to hear these Sting rumors anymore. It's going on fucking a decade that we've been hearing sting/wwe/taker rumors
ReplyDelete"The idea for the video came from the web staff to drum up interest and page hits."
ReplyDeleteLet me translate: this was done to work the 86 people I'm America that still care about Sting into a frenzy for page hits
No. I've said this more than once here before but I'll say it again...Sting/Taker in 2014-15 appeals only to

ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I agree.
ReplyDelete10 years ago? Definitely.
5 years ago? Sure. Wouldn't have been amazing, but yeah, ok.
Now? Two broken down guys who both need their opponent to really do the bulk of the work and protect them.
The only thing it has going for it is name value. I think both would be better served in managerial roles - each putting up a protégé who is "the future of the business" or to inherit their mantle. Have their chosen ones inherit their finishers too as a torch-passing thing.
As with Taker - someone who can do the bulk of the work but make him look a million bucks.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Bryan, Cesaro, Rollins, Ambrose or maybe Zayn.
I like the creepy gothy comic-book stuff. It's one of the reasons I love gimmicks like Bray Wyatt more than "Generic name that sounds like it came from bad erotic fiction and looks the same as everyone else".
ReplyDeleteI don't want to see this match, but I still like the gothy characters. I don't think this makes me a bad person! ;)
Compared to you, he'd treat Sting humanely.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, unless we describe Daniel Bryan with a stronger adjective than fantastic I don't think Punk is either. In-ring, the only thing he really has over Bryan is better at swinging weapons and slightly better moves of doom sequence.

ReplyDeleteProbably nothing but it's an improvement.
ReplyDeleteI hate the "Extreme Rules" concept, hate it...all the WCW PPV gimmicks you can bring back and you pick "Uncensored"?!?
And they have a show called "Payback" that isn't the immediate show after Mania where people win rematches from Mania. Tell me that calendar makes sense.
It has over 100k views in a single day. Clearly it worked.
ReplyDeleteDark match with Yoshi Tatsu.
ReplyDeleteSting's mysticism was always ruined by his voice IMO. He starts talking and you're just like oh, he's just some regular dude in face paint.
ReplyDeleteMy fake doctor malpractice insurance keeps me covered
ReplyDeleteYou weren't a fan of when Crow Sting started to talk in WCW?
ReplyDelete"IIIIIIIT'S SHOWTIME, FOLKS!!"
How gothic and dark of you, Sting. Really mysterious.
You're only getting upvotes because you're using that as your avatar, and by upvoting you some pathetic bastard thinks they have a chance at having you fly to their location for you to have sex with them.
ReplyDeleteHe was...never the greatest promo in the world.
ReplyDeleteDefine intelligent.
ReplyDeletePunk doesn't want to be a celebrity but works a job that's directly in the lime light. He's a bitch. No offense
ReplyDeleteIf Sting HAS to wrestle again, I think a better idea would be for UT and Sting to team up to handle the Wyatts. Let them make shit REALLY creepy, and disguise both old men's weaknesses with an insane tag brawl.
ReplyDeleteYou're the only guy pretending to be female here, that's for sure.

ReplyDeleteAh, SHIT.
ReplyDeleteIt probably doesn't. They've done the same thing for Punk/Michaels, Rock/Michaels, etc.
ReplyDeleteLarger than life is not a real thing. Neither is stage presence.
ReplyDeleteYou can not quantify it. Therefore it is subjective.

ReplyDeleteGuys, Guys! We're supposed to be the mellow and cool board. Regardless of anything, lets not be terrified of a picture of a woman, ok?
ReplyDeleteI actually believe that he currently does NOT work a job that puts him in the lime light. He did. He was unhappy. He left. No harm no foul. And actually he didn't leave anyone in the lurch because EVERYONE got a better story with him gone.
ReplyDeleteJust because you can't quantify something doesn't mean that it's not a real thing.
ReplyDeleteNot even remotely comparable situations, lol.
ReplyDeleteGotta love the anti-Punk stance this blog has taken nowadays, though.
Ok...bit of a non sequitor, Ian.
ReplyDeleteIn response to you, I'd like to point out that I don't like Arn Anderson.
It's the same percentages as when he first left I think.
ReplyDeleteSting's big draw for me is that he might be used as a tie-in for some more WCW on the Network finally. Have him on some panels and the like.
ReplyDeleteYeah, sheesh. I expect this type of behavior from IGN, but not here.
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to figure out who those people are.
ReplyDeletethe poem about good and evil set the tone for starrcade '97 to be something epic, than of course the match happened.... even with all the shit at the end, I miss WCW like woah especially nowadays when im not really enjoying the WWE product that much.
ReplyDeleteThose that agree with OfficerFarva.
ReplyDeleteYea. I'm 10 times more intrigued buy a Cena/Sting match than a Taker program. Give him Cena or Bray. The problem is that he only has a really short shelf life as an attraction... no way in hell he's going over Cena, Taker or Bray. Then what?
ReplyDeleteHave him put over Bray then Old Yelled him
Or something like Sting & John Cena (or Mankind) vs Kane & Undertaker
ReplyDeleteThat's like saying star quality isn't real or even the often talked about "it factor" that everyone in the business talks about. ReplyDelete....I'd be fairly disturbed 8 year olds know what a juggalo is
ReplyDeleteThis is accurate
ReplyDeleteLike they know who juggalos are. If they were ever relevant (they weren't ) they stopped being cool about the same time Sting did.
ReplyDeleteI live in Central Illinois. For some god damn reason, ICP is still popular here. Plenty of 8 year old boys probably know who they are here, because they have terrible parents.
ReplyDeleteYes, but again this is all subjective. Not based in any fact. All opinion. To say definitively someone has "it" or doesn't is ignorant and narcissistic at best.

ReplyDeleteThat's why he should retire right after.
ReplyDeleteRemember when Cena first came up/was in OVW and everyone said he was a lot like a young Sting because he would do the Stinger Splash?
ReplyDeleteFact: I am great at everything
ReplyDeleteSubjective: OfficerFarva may be the greatest person in the history of the world.
This should nicely illustrate the difference for those that are confused
Fact: You are not great at predicting hat match 'Taker will have at 'Mania. Fact: You are not great at following through on the bet you lost
ReplyDeleteTrue. I've been doing nights recently and it honestly slipped my mind. I'll get you sometime this week. Just remind me
ReplyDeleteRemember when many of us were shitting all over WCW in the late 90s because they were shoving guys like Hogan and Piper in main events? Or were recently complaining about WWE bringing back and immediately pushing guys like Batista who are out of shape and can barely work at this point?

Great callback.
ReplyDeleteLet me add that Hornswaggle is very short
ReplyDeleteI'M A GREAT WHITE SHARK..... NAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAYAY!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've always considered him the modern day Sting when he started out, but he's far surpassed that in the ring since '06.
ReplyDeleteHoly shit, that was some serious misogyny busting out there! Did I stumble upon GameFaqs or 4Chan by accident?
ReplyDeleteI like this idea actually
ReplyDeleteSo WWE.com did a Countdown on this subject awhile ago, which also featured this match, so it's not exactly breaking new ground. I will say that after watching that bit again, I REALLY hate that I live in a world where Rock Vs HBK never happened.

ReplyDeleteI'm 100% sure the last one ain't happening.
ReplyDeleteParallax needs to lay some smackdown on those two. They're stealing his gimmick.
ReplyDeleteNope. And not everyone could have done it.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say Goldberg (when he didn't talk and just worked minute long matches), but then I remembered that his big 'money' matches were given away on TV
ReplyDeleteIt worked because of everything he's put into wcw before.
ReplyDeleteHogan's ego just ruined it.
But WHERE are the bees?!?!
ReplyDeleteI too love awesome visiuals for pc/video games.... BUT ....that doesn't mean I want the developers to focus so much on them that the game lacks in almost every other department than "presentation" (and that has been the case with so many of the games of the last years).
ReplyDeleteThe constant contact thing has been a game changer. I'm one who assumes people are avoiding me, especially when we've just hung out and I know you carry your phone at all times....
