Recommended viewing today is WWE's Cyber Sunday 2008. Check out a great match between Matt Hardy and Evan Bourne for the ECW Championship, a surprisingly decent Last Man Standing match between The Undertaker and The Big Show, and a Jeff Hardy-Triple H WWE Championship match during the period when they were pushing Vladimir Kozlov as a bad-ass heel....and the fans didn't much care. I'm sorry I've spoiled the voting results for you all.

Man I hate Last Man Standing matches SO much... the whole match is one guy standing there, one guy laying there, and a referee trying to make counting to 10 seem dramatic.
ReplyDeleteFor me, the moment Jeff Hardy officially got made was at Survivor Series 2007, when he and HHH were the co-survivors of their team, followed by the few matches they had. Lots of people would sarcastically joke that "Just being around HHH gives them the rub, lulz!" but I truly believe that was the case here. I took him as a serious main event threat for the 1st time.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree that it has an anti-climactic feel to it all. Historically, the greatest one of all time was the Jericho-HHH one from Fully Loaded(?) 2000. However, I sure am glad that they have not turned that match into a concept PPV. Hell in a Cell sure has lost it's specialness because of that.
ReplyDeleteI'd say the worst "concept PPV" was the "Fatal 4 way" one. Those are usually just a lazy booking excuse to throw a bunch of names out there... so let's make a whole PPV out of it!!
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else see the Tonight Show bit where they had New Yorkers boo a picture of Robinson Cano, only to have Robbie show up from behind? Flipping hysterical. I may have to rethink my stance on Fallon. Between that and the Brian Williams rap mash-ups, he's produced some funny bits.
ReplyDeleteThese Best of Hall of Fame shows are ass.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the old Texas Deathmatch rules with a pinfall then the guy has ten seconds to get back to his feet, but the count is much faster.

ReplyDeleteIf you want to see it, try here.
Oh sure, be fancy and include a link. I shoulda done that...
ReplyDeleteWhen Lex Luger was allowed to call the coin in the air and won the toss, I was almost expecting Bret to complain about being screwed.
ReplyDeleteYou have to re-up in August if you want the good stuff. Apparently.
ReplyDeleteHad a random wrestler encounter last night. Attended a somber candlelight vigil for a high school student and who is behind me? Bob Backlund. Got a handshake but it wasn't the time for a talk. I did get a business card for some gym thing he's promoting.
ReplyDeleteBastion Booger eating a pizza on RAW in '94 > last night's RAW
ReplyDeleteJonathan Law?
ReplyDelete1 million points if Backlund went on a preachy "crazy old man" tirade about all these candles being an unsafe fire hazard.
ReplyDeleteI always hated that coin flip. Luger "won" but clearly got screwed. Losing the flip was a much better position to be in.
ReplyDeleteYes! You local?
ReplyDeleteHis crazy old man gimmick was completely underrated...and hilarious.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was thinking the same thing. In this case, though, they at least gave a reason why Bret would have rather faced Yokozuna first; he never wanted to have to wrestle Owen. And at least they tried to make it seem fair by making both guys (had they lost the flip) wrestle someone else first. Of course, announcing Luger's potential opponent as Crush, when it was obvious he was going to be wrestling Savage, was stupid.
ReplyDeleteWhy arent they just uploading the whole show?
ReplyDeleteI never saw fujis hof induction.
He is in the hof right?
In your defense it isn't like you are in the media and think about things like relaying information.
ReplyDeleteThe guy that managed Demolition? Yes. You... no.
ReplyDeleteWWE has been adding like 4 shows a week to the Network. At this pace, we will get Prime Time by 2150.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I dont think theres one wwf lms match I like.
ReplyDeleteThats funny cuz I always thought I liked the concept but when I think about it its always either:
1. In another company
2. A different stip that I thought to be lms. Like rock/foley I quit.
I dont like jericho/H from fully loaded cuz of H winning when it could have launched jericho into the main.
But I did like the promo H gave afterwards from the titantron, puttin over jericho but claiming to be that much better cuz he is the game... that damn hood yadda yadda blah
That was the other guy with the same photo. Something Ferrari.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I'm always a little wary of posting links here. Not sure why with all the links other people put up. Need to get over that.
I hated the scramble matches.
ReplyDeleteI'd argue that the HIAC PPV's are the worst. It is an insane misuse of the gimmick match. There's been some HIAC matches on those PPV's that were the FIRST match of feuds instead of being the last.
ReplyDeleteOk. Gotta go to youtube to see if they have his speech and see if its good or not.
ReplyDeleteIf triple threat matches were popular back then we could've seen Yoko vs. Bret vs. Luger or even throw Owen in there in a Bryan/HHH scenario where if he beat Bret in the opening match in the show, he got in the main event. Mania X would have Yoko vs. Bret vs. Luger vs. Owen as the main event.
ReplyDeleteIt's so weird looking back on a different time in wrestling. It's too bad three or four-way matches weren't really a thing back then, because that would have been pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI still say during Bret's celebration at the end of the show, Luger should have forearmed the hell out of him. Or at least the next night on Raw.
Jericho-HHH is the only LMS match I can remember really liking that much. I honestly don't remember the Foley-Rock LMS they had in February '99
ReplyDeleteso they did have a lms?
ReplyDeleteSee they had so many matches in such a short span that are so interchangeable to me cuz rock had the boob surgery and was doing all those stip matches.
Totally forgettable
It was at St. Valentine's Day Massacre, the same show that Big Show debuted on. The only thing I remember about the match is the finish (both guys were counted down for ten).
ReplyDeleteI don't know, it's not been too bad the past few years, they have done an ok job to time blowoff matches around October (Punk/Ryback/Heyman, and Bryan/Orton's 3rd fight of their trilogy. So I don't find it *THAT* bad.
ReplyDeleteOwen should've got in the ring, hugged Bret, then kicked him in the nuts or his knee for continuity.
ReplyDeleteGorilla Monsoon pretty much said that at the start of a "Wrestling Challenge" episode. Loosely quoted, he said "I think Bret won by losing the coin toss, Because Luger/Yokozuna are gonna knock each other out. I think you are far superior than brother Owen, so Bret, I think you won by losing the coin toss."
ReplyDeleteWould have made back to back wrestlemania days where Luger would have knocked out Bret. Could have been the Pete Rose/Kane tradition before that happened!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the worst gimmick match ever.
ReplyDeleteYes, Trumbull
ReplyDeleteAnything that results in The Brian Kendrick being the WWE/World champion is fine in my books!
ReplyDeleteThey are on all the time too
ReplyDeleteHello neighbor.
ReplyDeleteJust wondering if somebody can check my math. Raw as its played now with two episodes every weekday will be caught up with the first Nitro in the second week of July right?
ReplyDeleteWhat's the deal with the Spring Stampede's? I get it that we are heading into spring, but they started in a random year
ReplyDeleteWas WCW April's PPV.
ReplyDeleteWorse than TNA's Reverse Battle Royal?
ReplyDeleteRight, but they started with 1997
ReplyDeleteAre they putting up that many new episodes? Because I thought they were showing an episode from 10:00 (est) one day at 9:00 the next?
ReplyDeleteThey started with 1994 the week before I think.
ReplyDeleteYeah, they're repeating at 9 a.m. with a new ep at 10. So, we're getting one episode a day, five per week.
ReplyDeleteWas that for the kid who was killed for turning down a prom invite?
ReplyDeleteYes, you two are right, my bad.BRB
ReplyDeleteI always thought of it like this. If Luger won against Yoko, he would've been champ and would've had the "championship advantage" against Bret. Sure he would've had a grueling match against Yoko but if he survived and won then Bret would have to pin him or make him submit. That's about the best sense I can make out of it in kayfabe terms.
ReplyDeleteIf I did the math correctly- and I did it very quickly, so I may not have- there are 78 episodes of Raw to air before the first Nitro. Call it 80 episodes, which would be 16 weeks, so late August, which makes sense for obvious reasons. Keep in mind, I didn't include any weeks Raw was preempted because of our canine friends.
ReplyDeleteThat's actually really well-put, from a kayfabe sense.
ReplyDeleteDiamond studd vs z man at gab 91 wasn't too bad. I have little hope for this Simmons vs Nash match though
ReplyDeleteCould have made for an interesting heel turn or "accident"... Luger being desperate enough to keep the belt by any means.
ReplyDeleteI had 76 so we are both in the same area. Yeah, I don't know how many weeks raw took off in that time for dog shows or tennis.
ReplyDeleteI had forgotten about tennis- wasn't that one of the sticking points that lead to WWE jumping to Spike in 2000?- but yeah, there were quite a few weeks that one of the tennis Grand Slams was on in place of Raw.
ReplyDeleteThat's something that could work now. Probably not something to do at Mania but at Summerslam and maybe with the IC or US belt. Some kind of gauntlet where a face wins the first match to get the belt, goes on against another face and does some kind of chickenshit thing to save his title.
ReplyDeleteI always loved it when two faces wrestled each other and one or both did heelish things to win.
ReplyDeleteYes. Such a loss.
ReplyDeleteThey really should've put him over Orton in 2008. I think the fans were ready for it.
ReplyDeleteWrestling Classic 85 had a pretty good face vs. face match b/t Orndorff and Tito. Orndorff kept wanting to go full heel but didn't although he did do some subtle heel moves. Ventura was great at pointing those things out too.
ReplyDeleteWoah they jobbed oz out to Ron Simmons? I didn't realize they were jobbing out that gimmick after two months.
ReplyDeleteI loved the Bret-Piper match from WM VIII for the same reason. Both guys were teasing being full heels. And Bret's faking an injury to almost win was just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteBobby Heenan's HOF speech is one of the best I have ever heard.
ReplyDeleteThey were definitely playing 94 on the streaming channel a little while ago.
ReplyDeleteyeah, but why not just put up the full ceremony? And why repeat it CONSTANTLY. It is in the vault now, we saw it. Move on.
ReplyDeleteWow so wcw broke up the rnr express in 91...and turned Ricky Morton heel? What the fuck...
ReplyDeletefun, but I still hope Robbie goes 0-fer-this series.
ReplyDeleteOr that he's repeatedly IBBed to pitch to Smoak or Corey Hart.
Oh yeah. That totally sucked.
ReplyDeleteThere's no reason to pitch to Cano with the Mariners lineup.
ReplyDeleteHopefully tonight's game doesn't get rained out. Looking forward to a trip to the stadium.
Who turns Ricky Morton heel? And how is this match so bad?
ReplyDeleteThe Thunder-Grizzlies game tonight has me very excited. I think if OKC loses tonight, they're done.
ReplyDeleteWCW in 1991! That's who!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for that game either. All 4 western series have been amazing.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I just watched it on demand over the weekend. 1994 was hitting a real groove in WCW right up until Hogan signed.
ReplyDeleteI disagree, Jeff Harvey was just not ready yet.
ReplyDeleteDo you know what the angle was? Was it any good? To me Ricky is the quintessential scrappy babyface.
ReplyDeleteGibson was injured for a while, and they started out teaming Morton with Tommy Rich before having them both join the York Foundation.
ReplyDeleteIt might have played better if Morton didn't keep wearing his RnR gear.
