Hey Scott,
I graduate in two weeks so this is my final plea for publicity on the Blog. I just want to thank you for promoting my stories over the past year and letting me know people actually care about what a college kid thinks of wrasslin's weekly shenanigans.
Obviously I'm a daily reader of the Blog so it's been really cool being featured in any capacity.
Thanks for helping me live my dream.
John Corrigan
Congrats on graduating college.
ReplyDeleteWhats your major?
I've never commented in one of your threads but have skimmed/read most of your plugs. Good stuff man. Congrats
ReplyDeleteI always think you are the guy from Smashing Pumpkins when I see glance at your name... anyway good luck on entering the "real world"... it sucks out here.
ReplyDeleteor some way that everyone couldn't figure them out anyway...
ReplyDeleteIt was.
ReplyDeleteI have the Shatner SNL video ingrained in my memory.
Fine... Who is John Galt?
ReplyDeletePeople act like making a post is like writing a doctoral dissertation. It typically takes me 35 seconds to type out a post.
ReplyDeleteIt's almost like white collar workers have offices with computers or that cell phones have internet now that you can look at when you have some downtime on your job. Far fetched tho, I know
Oh wow.
ReplyDeleteI was always under the assumption that it was this big rumor/myth abt the unsold games.
Like why would you make more games than consoles in the first place?
ape here is just a troll, ignore him and move on. He suckered me in for 1 post but now I am done.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings. I was around on the blog long before 90% of the people here showed up. I think it's great that people have found a community but the major reason I stopped posting a couple years ago is that it got too overwhelming. I kinda miss the days with fewer topics and more in depth discussions where you could post something and come back 3 hours later and not find the whole discussion already buried halfway down the page. Outside of right now (knee surgery) I simply don't have the time (or the job) to be able to post quick enough and often enough to have any sort of discussion. For me personally I miss the slower blog with nothing but Scott Keith content to comment on. Guess that makes me old On a related note, anyone know what ever happened to Flair4theGold? I know he was moderating at one point and I haven't seen him around since I wandered back over 3 weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteI actually just wrote that between sets at the gym. It's almost like walking and chewing gum at the same time
ReplyDeleteWhat was the best Rougeau Brothers match? I think Jacques may have been the most underappreciated WWF guy of the 80s-90s.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the bulldogs match against the dream team at wm2. In fact, IMO, that was one of the best WWF ppv matches in the 80's.
ReplyDeleteI know, right?
ReplyDeleteI was always under the impression that the Hayes/garvin version was really terrible. But watching some of their work on the network has changed my opinion. They've had some really good matches.
ReplyDeletewe're happy for you?
ReplyDeleteNobody wants to be "that guy"
ReplyDeleteWhat did you expect from this thread?
ReplyDeleteWow what a hard question. Damn! I personally prefer Eaton but overall I'd say arn was better because while, IMO Eaton was slightly better, arn was way better on the mic.
ReplyDeleteHayes was probably the second-best worker in World Class during its peak, just behind Kerry.
ReplyDeleteThey saw the first big cash in with the über successfull movie. However time and man power constraints ultimately combined to create a game that is nonsensical unless you have the instruction booklet, even then it plays like crap.
ReplyDeleteIt's the business model ljn used throughout the nineties.
I'm partial to the Rockers match from the first WWF show in London. It probably takes six minutes for anyone to make contact, and yet it's glorious.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that bad but yeah, high school and college is pretty fun. I look back at any time I bitched about being in high school and college and I want to go back in time and kick my own ass.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure which is more likely between that explanation and the explanation that you actually believe Hogan being an eternal champion would do good business.
ReplyDeleteTHAT'S where the meat was. I knew that there was more than just the Shatner thing.
ReplyDeleteHayes was a GREAT talker... but even he admits his ringwork wasn't quite up to snuff. It's why the Freebirds were a three-man unit... Buddy and Terry for the work, Michael for the heat.
ReplyDeleteYou might not want to do the math on how many hours those 35 seconds add up to.
ReplyDeleteTrust me... I know abt ljn... I had the xmen game on nes.
ReplyDeleteIt pained me to play that game after I begged moms to get it for months
I have a fever and the only prescription is more ring bell!
ReplyDeleteI think it was sort of a running joke with the writers
ReplyDeleteWow, I tend to disagree. I mean, I loved college and high school but the "real world" is waaaay more fun on every conceivable level, at least to me.
ReplyDeleteI used to look at that game in the local rental place every
ReplyDeleteweek and dream of how awesome it must be, but it was ALWAYS rented.
When I finally played it I was so disappointed that I still
remember it now, roughly 25 years on.
What a terrible, terrible game.
There were a LOT of old Atari games dug up, it's just that E.T was the best known one because of its sad story.
ReplyDeleteAtari expected that everyone would want to buy ET based on the success of the movies. Plus with the game coming out by Xmas, millions more would by the Atari to get ET the game. ooops.
ReplyDeletePacman was a terrible port from the arcade. Probably the worst of all ports. Atari figured that people wouldn't care and ordered something like 7 million cartridges to be produced.
ReplyDeleteNailed it on the head. And it helped bury Atari, along with the whole industry for a couple years.
ReplyDeletehttp://kotaku.com/awesome-photos-from-the-atari-landfill-1568711945
ReplyDeleteI usually don't care for Kotaku, but this'll work.
SPRITE FLICKER TO THE MAX!
ReplyDeleteThat was Pac-Man on the Atari. Shit would hurt your head after a minute or so.
Plus the over saturation of video game systems on the market didn't help. Which is a shame, because Coleco Vision was the best until the NES came out.
ReplyDeletePushing games out after 6 weeks of development will do that. Also the maze was wrong and the fruit was large rectangles. What a terrible game.
ReplyDeletewatch the glory
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL2p2ANFlQ4
This is why I changed my screen name. That, and parallax made me be his "apprentice."

ReplyDeleteI miss so much stuff on the Blog because a lot gets posted either while I'm sleeping or focusing on another thread and don't feel like catching up. But I pick and choose the threads I want to take part in.
ReplyDeleteThe Disqus notifications really help when I've been carrying on a conversation, though. It was much more difficult to follow along before.
There was a special feature on one of the DVD sets called, "It's Not Lupus."
ReplyDeleteThe ljn wrestling games have a soft spot with me.
ReplyDeleteBut friday the 13th?!?
How in the shit do you even beat that game?
Good point. I'm always stunned that The Dynamic Duo (Adams-Gino) never get any love in these discussions. MOLTEN heat and they could back it up in the ring.
ReplyDeleteId go back to college in a heartbeat
ReplyDeleteYou kill Jason's mom in her flying headed glory while hunting down the purple jump suited monster. If I remember right you gotta kill him twice and hope the fuck you don't still have just rocks as your counselors weapons.
ReplyDeleteBetter question; when does John Galt shut the fuck up
ReplyDeleteIt's not a vinson gif thread.
ReplyDeletefuture QOTD: Why do people like hijacking my QOTD topics?
ReplyDeleteNot working > working
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer a Festivus styled roundtable open airing of grievances
ReplyDeletehey, don't you know that Caliber designed a banner for the site once?
ReplyDeletei do like the notifications, I just feel like so often I'm late to the party so my comments are too late. If you don't hit a topic in the first 3 hours or so, it generally is done. Also, and this is in no way an indictment of any posters, it is hard for me to wade through all the personal stuff. I think it is great on one level that posters are "friends" but as more of an outsider it can be a bit overwhelming to get through 400 replies when only 80-100 are about the topic while others are about girlfriends, jobs, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe hammerlock bump that Dynamite Kid took was brutal.
ReplyDeleteLane/Eaton didn't call spot the conventional way. They used hand signals. That is impressive enough on its own.
ReplyDeleteSo, what? We're not "friends" now? I'm so hurt!
ReplyDeleteI kid, I kid!
I don't think Parallax sleeps with anybody.
ReplyDeleteuggh. They were ok as faces, but they overdid the stalling for heel heat so bad once they turned heel that they were unwatchable. And then they became a horrid comedy team (and I hate comedy wrestling, don't mind comedy on my show, but not in an actual match).
ReplyDeleteThe Quebecers were better but I thought the Rougeaus' heel gimmick was great. I don't mind stalling cause I like Memphis heel tactics. Also, I genuinely love "All American Boys" as a song even with no comedy/irony behind it.
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing at the idea that any of you think that you can prevent the unstoppable locamotive that is Abeyances post count.
ReplyDeleteDon't sign your posts. Or whatever.
ReplyDeletei don't know if I'd say really good, but they weren't the worst thing in the world. Hayes was able to be carried and Garvin was always a solid worker. I think by 1990ish I'd lost my patience wth the whole heel stalling thing. 1975 was 15 years ago and over the top stalling for cheap heat seemed (and still does seem) so passe`. When they actually worked the were ok.
ReplyDeleteToo meta for me to care about in the context of watching wrestling.
ReplyDeleteBe sure to leave your boots in the editor's office.
ReplyDeleteBusters vs Harts
ReplyDeletethe fans weren't nearly as high on Zenk as Flyin' Brian. Heard some serious boos for the Z-Man during 89-91ish.
ReplyDeleteThat shit cracks me up.
ReplyDeleteThey make me laugh with their trolling techniques
the entrance music was great, but personally I don't like the Memphis heel stuff. One of the greatest things ever was when WWF got the Memphis heel cleaned out of Savage after the first year or so. That said, it's all personal preference. That cheap heel stuff got some major heat, even into the early 90s. As a fan though (born in 73 so I was 17 by 1990) I just lost all patience with the cheap heat by 89-90 and instead of booing, I just tuned out on those matches.
ReplyDeleteI just figured out how to say what I'd wanted to say earlier:
ReplyDeleteFor Mid-South and World Class, Condrey and Eaton were PERFECT. As you say, they could get "KILL THE MOTHERFUCKERS!" heat, and that's what ran those areas. It still worked in Mid-Atlantic/JCP, but especially as 88 and 89 rolled around the skills and "different type" of heat Eaton and Lane could get just fit that era/territory better.
I do agree that Eaton and Lane would have struggled, if only slightly, in Mid-South and World Class. So I can see where Condrey/Eaton are considered "better". However, Condrey/Eaton may have fizzled out sooner, rather than later, in JCP if Condrey hadn't had his issues. So there's a point for Eaton/Lane.
The Bushwhackers/Beverly Brothers match clocked in at a speedy nine and a half hours of pure...greatness.
ReplyDeleteP.S.: I forgot this earlier, but the vast majority of Scott's reviews are on the Hayes/Garvin Freebirds. The "not-so-good" ones.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing Wyatt wins and faces Bryan at 'Payback' and Shield vs. Evolution continues.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever seen that kind of silence for a Ric Flair appearance. Or that uninspired a promo from him
ReplyDeleteBecause we like to talk to one another... but not about actual shit?
ReplyDeleteFar less than has been talked about around here
ReplyDeleteI have a friend I met on a Prodigy message board about Magic the Gathering in 1994 that I still communicate with almost every day
ReplyDeleteCorny said it best.
ReplyDeleteEaton/lane didnt have to get heat and sell tickets. They were programmed to have one of the best matches on the card cuz you are on the card with the horsemen... theres the heat and tickets sold right there.
When dusty brought them in in 86. They were programmed against the rnr and more specifically the lod. Starrcade 86 was named for thier Skywalker match. He brought them specifically to get heat and sell tickets.
By 88 though with condrey gone and the 4h holding the top gold... even though they still had heat and could still go you could see the obvious depush cuz they had a stranglehold on the us tag belts. Meaning they were still over as fuck but you cant have them go over arn n tully unless they were leaving which is what happened.
In cornys book mx vs the 4h did huge biz even with the company bottoming out and subsequent sale to turner.
Plus as corny said theres more footage of them.
Like I said I get the love for eaton/lane. I just am a big dennis condrey fan for how he worked during the course of a match. He had in ring charisma thats often overlooked cuz he wasnt flashy like lane who was polar opposite.
It was mostly E.T., but there was some Pac-Man carts in there too, among others. How the hell are you going to make more carts than consoles to put them into? And the scary thing is that Warner sold Atari to an even bigger idiot.
ReplyDeleteWith a Game Genie.
ReplyDeleteI bring the hits.
ReplyDeleteVery true. He's more of a leave 'em when they are asleep type guy.
ReplyDeleteAgreed on Condrey... he was just that damn good.
ReplyDeleteI guess Horny/Torito is a Wee LC match because the audience will figuratively piss all over it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a hilarious forum to read. I love reading how bent out of shape some of them get about some of the posters here.
ReplyDeleteNintendo saved the industry in this country, and it almost didn't happen, they were going to have Atari distribute it in the States, but when they saw how bad Atari was fucking up their own products they scrapped the idea. I don't think the SMS and TG-16 (NEC had a TERRIBLE business model for exporting the PCE, and it showed) would have got any more market penetration then they did even without the NES as competition.
ReplyDeleteNo love for Bulldogs/Dream Team at WrestleMania 2?
ReplyDeleteI don't see how anyone would've thought Fandango was gonna be a "big deal," no matter how strongly he was booked at the beginning. He's a wrestling ballroom dancer. That's all you need to know.
ReplyDeleteWorst arcade port ever, to be sure.
ReplyDeleteYoung people are probably reading this and thinking "what the hell as an arcade?"
I miss arcades.
ReplyDeleteStart was great, Bryan Kane stuff was a bit goofy but decent, the end was a decent way to build towards the show. everything else was meh
ReplyDeleteYeah. Nintendo putting strict restrictions on 3rd party development of games helped as well. No Custer's Last Stand for the NES.
ReplyDeleteDo you mean SuperBrawl '91? At WrestleWar the Freebirds beat Doom for the tag titles (and already lost them to the Steiners at a TV taping so they had a negative title run) and the Pistols wrestled the Royal Family (Victory and Morgan). I do like the SuperBrawl match, as the Boys/Freebirds had good chemistry and I thought Bradstreet was badass with a bad ass look. I grew up watching old Crockett/WCW so I always look back on those years fondly.
ReplyDeleteI've got a feeling they'll push him too hard and too fast, probably against Cena. He'll flop, and become a comedy character by the end of the year.
ReplyDeleteWell, when WCW was mostly regional in the south it was fine but they were getting booed and hate mail because of the confederate flags. I remember them getting booed out of the building at Halloween Havoc '90 (I was there live! Only 10 years old, haha) against The Master Blasters (Nash with a mohawk). So they turned into cowboys from Wyoming instead and stopped getting booed outside the South.
ReplyDeleteYes good call. I meant superbrawl 1
ReplyDeleteFunny enough, my favorite tag team for a while was Anderson/Eaton from the Dangerous Alliance days. I finally went back and watched a lot of Arn/Tully and the MX, and I like both teams a lot, but I'd have to give it to The Brainbusters as the greatest heel team I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteLol. Bayless vs Scott in FEATS OF STRENGTH!!
ReplyDeleteLulz.
ReplyDeleteDepends on what you are doing re: "working", I think.
ReplyDeleteHelped, but didn't totally solve the problems, there were still some really shitty games on the NES. Look at that LJN list.
ReplyDeleteOh, man. That game. Friday the 13th was so boring.
ReplyDeleteI think we need to have a Jacques Rougeau tribute thread.
ReplyDeleteAlso I kind of don't want to see Flair anymore he is very VERY old and has trouble getting the words out. He has aged at a frightening rate in the last 5 or 6 years and I'd prefer to remember the good times than watch him crumble away.
ReplyDeleteBut did you see Bray and the kids choir??/ here let me show you the tape again.
ReplyDeleteOn one episode, it really was Lupus, and House goes, "Finally, it's Lupus!"
ReplyDeleteWeird that it was non-title when the champs were going over anyway.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Slaughter.
ReplyDeleteNeeds some Meekin
ReplyDeleteI just read that for the first time. It was certainly very... interesting.
ReplyDeleteThat's Your_Favotite_Loser's schtick
ReplyDeleteKiller Bees!
ReplyDeleteHe has to do the honors and drop the belt first.
ReplyDelete"Until you pin me Bayless, Festivus is not over!"
ReplyDeletebecause his QOTD topics usually suck and are created so Meekin can come up with a false story that somehow relates to it.
ReplyDeleteIts not as bad as when Michael Jenkinson deleted his Delphi Forum in a fit of rage. Its too bad, because 2000-2001 stuff was all there and its all gone.
ReplyDeleteoh sure, there were plenty of terrible NES games but at least there where some standards.
ReplyDeleteLane turned them face because women cheered him when he did the snake.
ReplyDeleteArn was better because he had a natural tough guy charisma.
ReplyDeleteInteresting fact: Cena credits Arn for his steady improvement in the ring
I thought it pulled decent numbers.
ReplyDeleteLeave Farva alone!
ReplyDeleteLol.
ReplyDeleteIt still didn't ruin the match for me.
ReplyDeleteBring it on.
ReplyDeleteAnd adult seems to be slowing down.
ReplyDeleteOne 14 character neutral response at a time
ReplyDeleteThat should be on a shirt.
I think so far they are doing just fine with him. Awesome music hot valet a different look than other monsters and good squash matches. If this was 07 they would be feeding him to cena in three months but it's not so I suspect they will push him slow. Especially with the top of the card set for the next six months with shield , evolution, cena, bray and bryan. Maybe by summer slam he will be in the IC title hunt. I
ReplyDeleteCongrats.
ReplyDeleteCena got a very solid face pop when he came out maybe the biggest face pop of the night. The fans also were turning on bray chanting "no no no" it's weird how people can see the same show and come to diff e rent conclusions. Of course some of it is I think people m a nicer st their own beliefs in the audience. "So and so isn't over" or "so and so isn't fresh" when in reality it should read "this person is not over" or "I think this person is stale".
ReplyDeleteAre you from St Louis as well? Being there I thought Flair got a good reaction Cena got a good reaction. Bryans wasn't as big as it has been. The Kane stuff got over.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he's been on a roll.
ReplyDeleteYou think slaughter was inner circle? Ive never heard stories abt slaughter and once slaughter left for the awa he did the gi joe thing... you would think vince would have broken his back to get him back to push him to the moon.
ReplyDeleteSlaughter stayed away from a good number of years before coming back in 90. By then gi joe was in syndication.
Slaughter in the wwf around 1987 when he got his action figure would have rivaled hogan as far as merchandising imo
http://youtu.be/CR6yVUxXnyA
ReplyDeleteI hate their wwf run cuz they werent allowed to talk.
ReplyDeleteI think having heenan actually hindered them
Thats a great teacher to have.
ReplyDeleteNow with the wwe network. .. people will see it but I cant say ive watched enough of the team to put them in any contention.
ReplyDeleteSee: fabulous ones.
I also have a soft spot for the new breed promos.
ReplyDeleteI also have a soft spot for the New breed promos
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I saw one Fabulous Ones match from the AWA a million years ago on ESPN. I hated them from the Apter mags, just because of how preposterous their gear/look was. Bearded dudes with sequined suspenders, gloves, and bow-ties with no shirts?? Even though I was too young to understood what the word even meant, I thought that was gay.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is an all too common one: they present Rusev as this unstoppable, ass-kicking freak of nature, then make him sell offense to the likes of Sin Cara, Xavier Woods and R-Truth. If they really wanted to get him over, he should have beat all three of those guys in under 30 seconds, then beat some more established stars like Del Rio and Sheamus in convincing fashion, then put him over Big E for the I-C title in less than 2 minutes. That way, he could challenge Bryan for the World title and it would seem legitimate.
ReplyDeleteIt also would have helped to have him actually eliminate three or four guys from the Royal Rumble, as opposed to no one.
Sure. I have no idea why they felt the need to give one of the greatest talkers ever a mouthpiece.
ReplyDeleteTully was no slouch either. I mean they was giving BRET HART PROMO TIME IN 1989-90 but never let tully and arn talk for a year. Criminal.
ReplyDeleteIts sad they dodnt put tully in the top 50 talkers. Big omission in my book.
So Kane does a Kane thing and jobber's upset about it?
ReplyDeleteI don't get it.
If Sting ever gets his match, does Bobby Eaton graduate to "best WCW wrestler never to jump to the WWE" status?
ReplyDeleteAnd Caliber left money on the table.
ReplyDeleteHe disappeared mabe 6 months ago. Popped in once to say that he had been busy. He may still lurk, but my feeling was that he wasn't so much on board with the new BOD.
ReplyDeleteNope, I don't recall a nickname for their own group, a la The Wolfpac.
ReplyDeleteSomething nobody has mentioned is how horrible Bryans mic work was last night. On top of the delivery not being great he screwed up and stumbled over four or five words. He's very hit or miss and doesn't seem comfortable or believable cutting a promo for any sort of length of time. Also Cesero is not working with Hey man so far. I think Hey man works better as a feature to the main attraction like with Punk and Brock a lot more than when he's the attraction.
ReplyDeleteI can see why. Not quite the style that it was when he and I first were posting back in the day. I notice NWA88 doesn't post much either unless buyrates/ratings are discussed (his hobby).
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think that he's much the same. Just my take though, I don't have a relationship with either of them. As you can see, we've had something of a change in the guard.
ReplyDeleteThere's probably been a few here over the years that would hit you, yes.
ReplyDeleteTully was very good. He reminded me of Robert De Niro in Cape Fear; always calm, but menacing at the same time. Great worker too; I'd say his only downfall was that he was too small for the time.
ReplyDeleteGod, How did I.miss making fun of you for participating in magic the gathering boards on prodigy?
ReplyDeleteI'd buy one
ReplyDeleteIf by piss all over you mean throw roses in the ring like they just watched an amazing opera.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I'm HYPED for that match.
For $14.
ReplyDeleteI was told by a wrestler on the indy circuit that Slaughter and Patterson were fucking around for years. Believe that if you want.
ReplyDeleteMe too
ReplyDeleteNot real sure since Dave is taking time off after ER
ReplyDeleteGood comment about raw.
ReplyDeleteVince Jordan is mick Foley?
ReplyDeleteThat's a bit too extreme and it would kill half your mid card for one guy. They are doing just fine so far nobody needs him to be contending for the title.
ReplyDeleteParallax said it was. I always thought it was Mr. Satan because they were online at the same time and used the same insults.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about putting him in a world title program so fast, but I agree that he should be killing guys like Sin Cara and Xavier Woods in under a minute. Do that for a couple of months (don't have him wrestle on every show, however, to make his appearances seem somewhat special), then move him on to better opponents like Ziggler, Swagger, etc.
ReplyDeleteZack Ryder and/or Dolph Ziggler
ReplyDeleteI like your articles, Corrigan. Your photo on there always kind of makes me want to beat you up for your lunch money, but you're a good read.
ReplyDeleteI thought this show was as good as almost anything from say, 96 or 97 RAW.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing Sheamus turns and joins Evolution. Not basing that off anything though.
ReplyDelete
