In Your House I is on the live stream today. I remember watching this show when it aired live, and of course, the opening match between Bret Hart and Hakushi was a damn good one. Scott's original rating for this match was ***3/4, but I would rate it slightly higher. Anyone have any opinions on this show?
Also, beginning next week, the Network thread is being bumped to the evening in an effort to give the BoDers a thread to go to when most of us are at home. It just doesn't have to be Saturday night that gets the thread. EVERY night can have one.

"It just doesn't have to be Saturday night that gets the thread. EVERY night can have one."
ReplyDeleteStranger is making a power play! Is he trying to take over the BoD!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
"It just doesn't have to be Saturday night that gets the thread. EVERY night can have one."
ReplyDeleteHooray!
Just watched Doom beat the Steiners for the tag straps at Capital Combat. They beat the crap out of each other.
ReplyDelete1)Well, in 1994 WCW was losing money at a record rate. Flair's run since Starrcade had flopped hideously. Turner was seriously considering shutting down WCW entirely. Bischoff and Okerlund persuaded Hogan to come in. Turner's word was that it was basically a choice between WCW existing with Hogan as champion, or WCW being shut down. Of course, Hogan got to dictate the terms of his contract., and bring all his friends in. But it was either that or NO WCW AT ALL. Which would have meant no Nitro, no nWo, no Goldberg, and by extension no MSG Curtain Call and no Montreal Screwjob.
ReplyDeleteThose iPPV's WCW offered were audio-only shows.
ReplyDeleteLex, the supposed new face comes to the ring high-fiving fans and tells the camera man to: "get the **** out of the way." lollolo
ReplyDelete"and probably could have made partying money for a NIGHT doing a run with Austin as the Corporate Champion."
ReplyDeleteFTFY
WE'RE OUT OF TIME!!
ReplyDeleteSo you say 1994 WCW was losing money at a record rate, yet Scott, back in 1998, said Flair was "drawing like crazy as a babyface" in that early 1994 run. So which was it?
ReplyDeleteWCW had many types of cages around 1990. Why? They had the Thundercage, the bar cage from the Clash with Horsemen vs. Muta's team, the mesh cage...
ReplyDeleteLosing. In fact prior to Hogan WCW only ever lost money. I think it was 1995 with Hogan on top that was the first time ever that WCW made a profit rather than a loss.
ReplyDeleteI'm more inclined to agree with you here, but I'm curious as to whether there's a way to validate that or not. Maybe some of the other lemmings here have some insight.
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time beliving WCW lost more money in early 1994 than they did in 1993.
ReplyDeleteRemember, shitty wrestling is not equivalent to losing money, and good wrestling is not equivalent to making money. Hogan-Andre at WrestleMania III wasn't exactly a MOTYC, but it drew big money. Meanwhile, the dudes in ROH put on great match after great match in front of 4 people.
ReplyDeleteI almost believed you for a second.
ReplyDeleteWCW wasn't wasting a bunch of money on terrible mini movies. WCW made more money on PPVs in early 1994 than they did in early 1993:
ReplyDeleteSuperBrawl III: 0.50
Slamboree. '93: 0.50
SuperBrawl IV: 0.50
Spring Stampede: 0.54
Slamboree '94: 0.48
I wouldn't be shocked if Turner threatened to pull the plug in 1993, but 1994 seems a little fishy.
so Superbrawl is the same, and Slamboree is down. But what about house shows and merchandise sales?
ReplyDeleteI remember nothing about these ippvs from WCW and am really curious to see them. Where they seriously audio only?
ReplyDeleteSpring Stampede is extra revenue and the 12,000 in attendance was HUGE for WCW. Merchandise sales were never big and attendance was basicly a wash.
ReplyDeleteI love 1994 WCW, so I'm not exactly partial on this.
I remember stories where in 1994 WCW would get homeless guys off the street and give them free beer, just so long as they stayed in their seats so the cameras showed butts in seats. They often pissed themselves or fell asleep, but at least there were people in the seats.
ReplyDeleteWow I can't recall ever hearing about the iPPV thing.
ReplyDeleteFlair coming over to fight Austin in that time frame would have been GOLD.
I was being serious.
ReplyDeleteI think we can all agree that in hindsight, it turned out a million times better to have the Rock become that corporate champ.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard that story, but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the Starrcade '94 were bums off the street.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that WCW ever made any profit other than maybe a couple of years during the NWO run.
ReplyDelete"Drawing like crazy" from Keith in 98 was (probably) a lot more a reflection of his own personal enjoyment, and sketchy rumour, rather than any particular numbers based statement.
Hogan's opponent at that show was a bum off the street.
ReplyDelete$7.95 pay-per-listen. 12,000 people bought it, and only 300 could listen. The server crashed at some point, and they offered refunds.
ReplyDeleteSo you were being serious for a minute?
ReplyDeletePlease tell me they were made in a sound studio. That would be so WCW!
ReplyDeleteSo the entire audio feed was Tony ignoring the matches and talking about Sting and the NWO, and deeming it the best Pay Per Listen ever?
ReplyDeleteSo, we have the Raw Live thread on Monday, Main Event Live Tuesday, Impact Thursday, Smackdown on Friday, various PPV/"Special Event" threads on Sundays and now you want to fill out the rest of the week?!? How much time do you want us to spend on the Blog? Some of us have lives!
ReplyDelete...yeah, RIGHT!. You'll be here like the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteIt's a 50-50 shot.
ReplyDeleteCALL THE HOTLINE TO FIND OUT!!
ReplyDeleteHere, kind of a crude website, but the cards for these shows are shown here, also listing them as "pay per listen" or PPL.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.prowrestlinghistory.com/supercards/usa/wcw/internet.html
"It's a 95% shot."
ReplyDeleteYou have been assimilated. Resistance is futile.
I show up, but I usually don't have the stamina to stay up for the length of the thread.
ReplyDeleteI wake up and check the Blog to see 300-plus posts on a Clash re-rant? Missed the whole damned party.
It would be hilarious to get old timey 40's and 50's radio stars to impersonate Goldberg and Chris Benoit, while they simulate the sound of a suplex hitting the mat.
ReplyDeleteI hear you. Weekends I tend to be on at night because I do all my running around during the day. I'm in front of a pc during the week and I try not to get too involved in posts but if it's a good subject I say "fuck it."
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine if you had JR and Heyman on commentary for something like this..best PPV ever it would have been 5 star after 5 star match no matter who was in the ring.
ReplyDeleteThough in fairness I used to listen to PPVs on the scrambled ppv channel when I was a kid if my parents wouldn't buy that one for me.
No they were all audio from decent sized venues. I almost talked my parents into going to the Boston one
ReplyDeleteWhat evil lurks in the heart of man??? The Stinger knows!
ReplyDeleteMaybe if WCW didnt put their merch stands down around the entryway where fans couldnt get to them they would have sold more.
ReplyDeleteVIDEO TAPE MACHINES ARE ROLLING
ReplyDeleteyeah I think Bret vs Hakushi is **** hell of a match, then at a later IYH Bret's match vs Jean Pierre was right around ****. The only problem is Jean Pierre only had one eye that a tear could be coming from.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the bar cage
ReplyDeleteIn one of the Guest Bookers, Sullivan explains that the Dungeon was a blatant attempt to cater to Hogan's tastes, so that he could earn Hulk's trust and eventually get him into angles that Sullivan wanted. I know that *sounds* like a blatant CYA job, but considering that Sullivan did get Hogan into more advanced stuff in the first year of Nitro, it sounds plausible to me. Who knows, maybe without the Dungeon Hogan never agrees to turn heel.
ReplyDeleteI love old time radio, so the idea of Johnny Dollar reffing an NWO match just makes me mark out.
ReplyDeleteI would've rather have had Austin/Flair during summer/fall 98 than Austin vs. Kane/Taker and all of those horrible matches. Then you could transition to Rock.
ReplyDeleteRe: homeless guys, I think they're confusing WCW with Global.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing about this era is that when Bischoff took over, he got Turner to pay WCW rights fees for programming, which had never been done. That was a huge influx of cash. Also, we can make fun of the Disney tapings all we want, but they saved WCW a boatload of money.
I asked Scott about this yesterday and he said he was probably incorrect when he said that
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't buy this. As long as Turner was in power, WCW was going to have a home on television. And as we know, once Turner was out, even Hogan couldn't save the company.
ReplyDelete"And, oh my god, it's a suplex on the floor!"
ReplyDelete*Foley engineer picks up a slab of raw liver, and slaps it onto the floor"
"Did you hear his body smack off the concrete?!"
Hell Jack Beny and Rochester would have been nWo
ReplyDeleteAnd wasn't that because they had Hogan's contract in the Turner Home Video department?
ReplyDeleteYep, and since this was 1993, I'd say only 0.0001% of the fanbase had any idea that it was pre recorded months in advance. So that really wasn't a big deal at all.
ReplyDeleteWatching a RAW from 2006, Cena comes out to get his rematch clause from Edge. Lita comes out and all but says Edge sent her over to Vince's office to give him a blowjob to push the rematch to the Rumble. Who booked that, Jesse Baker?
ReplyDeleteSo your saying you don't have the stamina to stay up for certain activities. I'm not surprised.
ReplyDeleteYup. Walked right into that one.
ReplyDeletePeople that know that CEO's are likely to do things for hot women that blow them?
ReplyDeleteDo you actually say, out loud "fuck it"?
ReplyDeleteI agree though. I have to be careful not to get too wrapped up in BoD posting at work or I won't get anything done.
"Oh, Rochester?"
ReplyDelete"YES BOSS"
"Can you do the survey tonight? I'm still tuning my violin."
"YES BOSS. HEY YOU! I WANNA KNOW HOW MANY OF YOU ARE HERE TO SEE WCW?"
booooo...
"AND HOW MANY ARE HERE TO SEE THE NWO?"
yaaaaayyyy...
"HOW'S THAT, MISTAH BENNY?"
"Fine, fine, Rochester. Here's two dollars- get me one of those nice shirts with the logo on it."
"MISTAH BENNY? THOSE SHIRTS ARE $19.95 PLUS TAX AND SHIPPING!"
"Why, that's highway robbery! I'm going to have to take it out on that no-good rabble-rouser Sting tonight. Oh, I do hope he doesn't drop from the rafters again."
Truly they were there exclusively for Nasty Boys hardcore matches.
ReplyDeleteSaw X-Men:Days of Future Past last night, fantastic movie. Probably the best X-Men movie. I was really surprised by this since I felt nothing but apathy to every X-Men movie after 2. The action wasn't as good as Avengers but the story was better.
ReplyDeleteDouble whiskey straight in a dirty glass, right?
ReplyDelete"and probably could have made partying money for a year that he'd then lose in a night doing a run with Austin as the Corporate Champion. "
ReplyDeleteFTFY
:slow clap:
ReplyDeleteSaw an old WWE Confidental segment on Lita and her work with animals. It was really sweet and makes up for the fact that every man that's had sex with her has a rotten penis now.
ReplyDeleteWatching King of the Ring 2002 and man was the Noble/Nydia act so much fun at the start. Nydia pulled off the white trash shore character quite well and Noble was entertaining as her dirtbag boyfriend.
ReplyDeleteI might actually check out Legends House if Shawn is making a cameo. I only lasted through the first episode.
ReplyDeleteIf Ric Flair comes in fall '98 what happens to the Rock at Survivor Series? Does he still turn heel and win the strap? Hell is the strap even vacant? Anyone who was around in '98 remembers all the rumours of new guys being brought in to have a main event program with Austin from Dr.Death to Lord Steven Regal to yes even Ric Flair as the WWF realized there was only so many times they could run Austin with Taker,Kane & Mick Foley.
ReplyDeleteIf HHH never got hurt at Summerslam i felt he'd be a natural corporate champ and the De-Generate sell out angle would have drawn big against Stone Cold. Maybe team Trips up with Ric Flair? Ric And Austin feud while HHH and Rock go at it again but this time over the Big Belt?
Just watched some of the 06 Raw, shocking to see getting those reactions 8 years prior, and man, was Angle gold in that tag match.
ReplyDeleteI highly doubt this story.
ReplyDeleteAs others have said, the internet pay-per-views were actually pay-per-listens, as they were audio only. At one of them, though, a fan was able to sneak a camera in and that recording is floating around (I want to say it's Boston Brawl, but I could be wrong).
ReplyDeleteThe big deal was less about spoilers and more about WCW being forced into plans that wouldn't/couldn't come to fruition, like taking the titles off the Blonds and then Pillman gets hurt. They got better at hiding that stuff after a few months of upheaval.
ReplyDeleteDid you have to pay for these audio only ppvs? Because that sounds awful.
ReplyDeleteI think it's L.A. melee that has video. Iv seen the caps of it (Sting/Hogan cage match). Idk I gotta check
ReplyDeleteAlso, beginning next week, the Network thread is being bumped to the
ReplyDeleteevening in an effort to give the BoDers a thread to go to when most of
us are at home. It just doesn't have to be Saturday night that gets the
thread. EVERY night can have one.
Good choice. I've long since been a proponent of having a general hangout thread.
" It just doesn't have to be Saturday night that gets the thread. EVERY night can have one."
ReplyDeleteit's network thread night...
every night!
don't be a pantless troll...
be an otter!
"just watched some of the 06 Raw, shocking to see getting those reactions 8 years prior"
ReplyDeleteWHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO??!!
"Nydia pulled off the white trash whore character quite"
ReplyDeleteyeah, "character"
we need some space devoted to it.. not sure why we haven't dissected it ad nauseum
ReplyDeletethe storytelling is fantastic, even with obvious continuity errors
"Some of us have lives!"
ReplyDeletesaid no one on the BoD ever
Said me, actually. Frequently. Am I not a Blog of Doomer? Hast thou forsaken me, Nasty?
ReplyDeletelook bud, you either have self-respect and have something to offer society
ReplyDeleteor you're a BoD'er
can't be both
Goldberg vs. Curt Hennig from LA Melee is on YouTube, a fancam.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree the storytelling and the characters are what shone in this movie. You don't realize it at the time but there is some damn good acting going on. Can I ask what continuity errors? I highly doubt your talking about what I think you're talking about. I thought they stayed close to the continuity fairly well.
ReplyDeleteThere are pantless trolls around? I don't think this place is family friendly anymore.
ReplyDeletewhen there are no pants provided, yes

I dunno...the Dungeon was just a watered down version of the stuff he did in Florida.
ReplyDeleteAlto of those I took on faith from what we saw in past movies, Magneto using his powers at the end of X3, Proffesor X being "alive" at the end of X3 but yeah, a few things could have used a quicky one line explanation. As for Wolvies claws, I actually just assumed when I saw The Wolverine that they just fixed Wolverines claws with the adiantum they had lying around from the giant sword or they found his claws and did it that way. But again, yes, a quicky explanation would have been good. I want to get into more of it but I don't want to spoil the movie for anybody.
ReplyDeleteEither way it didn't lessen my enjoyment of the movie at all.
They probably kept cages locally to use at each arena.
ReplyDeleteit didn't lessen my enjoyment, either... it was just stuff i came across (a few of which had crossed my mind) when i was digging around after i saw the movie
ReplyDeleteWatching Clash II. Steve Williams *may* have been a monosyllabic meathead. Mike Rotunda was also approximately eleventy billion times better in the ring as Captain Mike than IRS.
ReplyDelete
