Ew, so crazy
ReplyDeleteTommy Dreamer FINALLY winning the ECW title. Too bad that a few minutes later it was followed by my least favorite title change ever.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Khali showing his undeniable athletic ability, July 17, 2007!
ReplyDeleteI was in the dorms and my friends only watched WWF. I always wanted to watch some of Nitro so I would watch in my room and if it was a good show I would stay there, if not I would join the Raw party. When the announcement was made on Nitro I went to the Raw party and not only enjoyed a great moment, but was able to watch my friends have a natural reaction to the win since they didn't get it spoiled.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned Hulk/Goldberg I mean had Hulk jobbed like that since WM VI?
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, if the headline says "Your favorite title change", that is probably going to mislead a few people. I stopped reading QOTD posts in full months ago.
ReplyDeleteI prefer his 5th.
ReplyDeleteI have two, mankind beating the Rock on Raw for his first title was one of my favorite wrestling moments ever. The crowd was hot for it and it was a feel good moment.
ReplyDeleteThe other is Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania XXX. Yeah, it ultimately ended in disappointment, but it's a moment that can never be taken away.
But....an arena full of bowler hats. Where there's a negative, sometimes there's a positive.
ReplyDeletehttp://gifsoup.com/view3/1377156/mickie-james-v-lick-o.gif
ReplyDeleteBest commentary of all time, the entire PPV of RR '92. It was a 3 hour story.
ReplyDeleteAustin at WrestleMania 14. The crowd pop, JR's commentary, and Austin finally winning it after years of adversity. Completely changed the WWF
ReplyDelete#LOLGOTCHWINS
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite little things ever occurs in that match, and I don't even know if Flair intended to do it or not.
ReplyDeleteAfter Flair wins the title, there's no over-the-top celebration, he takes his title and walks back stage. It's like beating Vader that night was pure business, something that he had to accomplish purely to prove to HIMSELF that he was the best.
I was totally jumping up and down for that one
ReplyDeleteBryan defeating Cena because it's my only world title change I saw live
ReplyDelete7th or GTFO
ReplyDeleteYou going again this year?
ReplyDeleteNo because didn't get tix fast enough for cheap seats and I was too pissed at wwe's direction over the last year starting 2 minutes after Bryan's victory
ReplyDelete"I'm soaking wet. I need a drink. Hey you, stupid! Get me something with a kick"
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is when Cena overcame the odds and won the title for the 7th time or was that the 8th time
ReplyDeleteSo you left the arena within 4 minutes of his title win then? #LOLPEDIGREE
ReplyDeleteoops; you are coorect; saw 2 of them then
ReplyDeleteBryan winning the triple threat this year might actually be mine. I was just totally sucked in to everything that was going on with the fans not letting Batista's inevitable win take place. A bunch of us ordered the Rumble and were so so happy with what that Pittsburgh crowd did, just like we were happy for that awesome hot crowd the night of the cage double-cross, and just like we were proud of that basketball crowd that did the Yes chants.
ReplyDeleteThen, at Elimination Chamber, I remember feeling upset that Bryan lost yet again, but the way Cole reacted to the loss (as was picked up on by several commenters here), let me know that this might not be the end of things. Then, we go to the awesome HHH / Bryan Raw segments, which set up the winner gets the shot match.
The icing on the cake was how much drama took place into that triple threat main event. The table spot, the stretcher job, the hot near falls. It was perfect. It was like one last time for me to feel like a mark (albeit, in this new internet age where tweeting about how Bryan should have been in the Rumble is akin to cheering for Austin 15 years ago).
I said this before on the blog but when Bryan won that main event and won the title, it was the first time since Backlash 2000 where I was genuinely excited and celebrating because "my guy" had won the belt. And like I've also said, I don't foresee that happening again anytime soon, if ever.
Maybe its because of Scott's Raw rants, but I'll never stop loving Backlund winning the title from Bret in one of the most awesome, incomprehensibly effective heel turns ever. Of course they pissed it away.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I saw this somehwere else, but Eddie beating Brock is probably my favorite title change of the post 1998-era. I literally jumped of my couch to high five my buddies.
Shawn beating Bulldog for the Euro title at One Night...oh wait you said North American history.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, it was Benoit, but...you know. Now it's Bryan at Wrestlemania XXX. Summerslam was just as sweet--a completely clean victory over Cena, are you kidding me?!?!--but the aftermath kind of stole the prize from that Cracker Jack box.
ReplyDeletePunk at Money in the Bank 2011 is a very close second. Yeah, they had to give Cena a visual win, but Punk getting the pinfall and then eluding their obvious loophole (kicking Del Rio's head off) was tremendous.
Hackenschmidt was getting.....BURIED!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDon't know it it's my favorite title change but I have to give some love to Bret beating Perfect at SS 91. It was one of those matches where you honestly had no idea who would win, every near fall was exciting and Bret winning with the Sharpshooter came out of nowhere, (remember there were not nearly as many submissions back then)
ReplyDeleteAlways loved Rock at Backlash 2000, against the McMahon grouping with Shane as ref, he and HHH going at it hard and fast, the McMahons ganging up on him...and then the glass shatters, Stone Cold comes out to destroy everyone with a chair and Rock gets a pin to a mega pop. That's how you nicely overbook and great highlight of a great year for WWF.
ReplyDeleteMick Foley winning the belt for the first time, and nothing else is really all that close. I still tear up when I see that moment. Daniel Bryan beating Cena clean at SummerSlam is probably second, mainly because I truly did not see it coming and marked out in my living room.
ReplyDeleteFor sure Mankind winning the world title from the Rock on Raw. lovable loser finally wins the big one etc etc etc, sacrificed his body his entire career and so on and on.
ReplyDeleteAlso Ziggler on the Raw after Mania a coupla years ago was great too.
Meh. Fuck both those guys.
ReplyDeleteNot Starscream taking the title from Megatron?
ReplyDeleteNothing about that isn't awesome.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to go to LA; I was thinking about flying out this year but I'm gonna hold back.
ReplyDeleteGood job with this one!
ReplyDeleteTrue. But that night was a fucking incredible moment. The Summer of 1998 was a great time to be a wrestling fan.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite matches ever. Great pick!
ReplyDeleteI suppose. I was mainly a WWF fan, so anything on Nitro was largely an afterthought for me, with some exceptions. I liked a lot of the light heavyweight stuff and just about anything Jericho or Guerrero did, but as far as the whole nWo thing, I didn't care much. I was over Goldberg early; my favorite moment was when Regal pretty much stiffed him and got fired for it. Goldberg beating Hogan at the GA Dome was ok. While I didn't despise Hogan then the way I do now, I wasn't overly fond of him on my screen.
ReplyDeleteObviously, Foley's first win was so awesome and it's so hard to top that. I loved Bret finally getting the win over Yokozuna at WM X. And Austin beating HBK at WM 14 was obviously huge for a lot of reasons.
ReplyDeleteThey could have been less dressed.
ReplyDeleteCalm down there, Monsoon.
ReplyDeleteI think Megatron won the rematch fairly decisively.
ReplyDeleteThey gotta get more up there.
ReplyDeleteI was watching for several years pre-Bret as champ, but that's still a pretty accurate window for me too.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing Nitro starts when Raw catches up to it. Only 4 or 5 raws at a time is ok with me however they need to start getting the ECW and WCCWs up. I'm curious if that will pick up once the SNMEs go up which I'm guessing is in the next couple of weeks.
ReplyDeleteWhat made the Bryan win cool was that its was the first time he used the running knee, (still say it should have been called sweet beard music) so when he got the pin it was a "holy crap he just won" kind of moment. Though I have to admit I did like Triple H finally becoming a heel again a few moments later.
ReplyDeleteI'd really like to see that Rock N' Wrestling cartoon (or whatever it was called) from the 1980's on there.
ReplyDeleteI understand but as Mikey said it was a huge moment, drew a huge rating and there were still plenty of people who were like....yeah but Hulk isn't going to job.
ReplyDeleteThat was like a 1 week switch in Japan, never acknowledged in the official title history.
ReplyDeleteIt just dawned on me, Storyline wise, Kane is responsible for BOTH CM Punk and Daniel Bryan being out of the company.
ReplyDeleteMan, this "Uso Crazy" nonsense.....is Vince just getting around to watching reruns of "Martin"?
ReplyDeleteUltimate Warrior beating Hogan, no question.
ReplyDeleteWarrior over Hogan because it was just such a mega event and Warrior had been on such an unstoppable ride. To finally win the big one, FROM the big one no less, was huge.
ReplyDeleteBret over Yoko because that was just settling everything right with the universe after what happened at IX.
Bret over Taker just because the title was coming home where it belonged again, and especially because storyline wise Michaels made it happen.
Austin over Michaels because Austin, and because it was over Michaels and at the time retired Michaels made it all the sweeter.
Benoit.
That's the last one that I really felt invested in.
Thanks for doing these updates. Nice to see what's gone up.
ReplyDeleteI will always have a personal soft spot for Bret Hart's first two title wins, over Flair and Yokozuna.
ReplyDeleteI attended a Nassau Coliseum house show four days after Bret beat Flair in Saskatoon, and got the awesome surprise of hearing about the match in the arena before it had been on TV, and learning that Bret's scheduled match with Nailz had been upgraded to a title match and made the main event (the scheduled main, Warrior-Flair no longer for the title, went on just before intermission). The Coliseum video that featured the title change (along with the Bret-Shawn ladder match that Vince wanted as a demonstration) was a great find, both when I rented it as a kid and bought it used in college. I was disappointed to think that Flair didn't like the match from a technical standpoint, but of course, he's entitled to his opinion.
As for Bret-Yoko, Wrestlemania X was the first PPV I saw semi-live (my friend ordered it, and I saw the evening replay at his house because of something I had to do earlier in the day), and of course, the ending was fantastic with Bret being lifted up on the faces' shoulders while Owen looked on, stunned, from the aisle. It was a great combination of blowing off the feud and making things right from the year before and also setting up the next chapter of Bret-Owen.
Monreal. I was very pro-Shawn, so I enjoyed him getting the last laugh.
ReplyDeleteAUSTIN! AUSTIN! AUSTIN!
ReplyDeleteRude over Sting for the U.S. Title. Flair over Garvin at Starrcade 87.
ReplyDeleteEddie over Brock at NWO '04.
ReplyDeletePunk winning at MITB '11 because I really didn't know where the hell they were going to go with it. Bryan winning at WMXXX just a close second, as Bryan ranks higher on my all time list over Punk, but I just couldn't see Bryan walking out of Mania without the belt. Both fantastic moments in their own way.
ReplyDeleteMankind wins the title on Raw in January 1999, it was great to see the lovable loser finally win the title, the DX/Corporation ringside brawl made for great atmosphere, and Austin's run in made the crowd BANANA.
ReplyDeleteBatista at WM? Me too! High five!
ReplyDeleteA lot of picks for Foley, but from my personal view, I don't see how you don't go with Punk winning it at MitB 2011. This was more than just a feel good moment. You had an emergent superstar who seemed to talk directly to the fans with Punk. You had the #1 heel in the smarks' eyes in a stale Cena. You had the complete uncertainty of what the hell was going to happen (Is this Punk's last match? CenaWinsLOL? What are they going to do if Punk wins?).
ReplyDeleteSo, the biggest face beats the most genuinely hated heel in an unpredictable moment with promises of more unpredictable moments to come. Yes, I was marking out, bro (TM Striker). Shit, sometimes it seems like half the people here skipped watching WWE most of the years between 2007 and 2011 only to come back immediately prior or right after this title change.
Bret over Yoko at WM10 and there's no close second for me. I do however wish the finish was a little different. Looked like a fluky win for Bret. I'd go with nearly the same finish but have Bret reach up and start shaking the 2nd rope to make Yoko lose his balance instead of having him just lose his balance because he's a moron.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching the 1/30/95 Raw. Starts out with Mabel vs. Bundy in a "mini" battle royal. DiBiase lays out the rules before the match and Vince talks over the WHOLE FUCKING THING.
ReplyDeleteAs if Vince and Shawn standing in front of a green screen and the illogical graphics "upgrade" were not bad enough.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching the Fink/bushwackers episode. I feel bad for Finkle but at the same time I think he should have pointed this out on legends house and told Piper to fuck off that he wasn't one of the boys.
ReplyDeleteI would say the Eddie and Benoit wins I was really into at the time. Bret beating Taker at Summer slam, as I have always been a huge Bret fan and that ending was put together perfectly.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap Vince didn't know what Narced meant. HBK called said Fink Narced on well dunn and he literally had no idea the words come out of HBKs mouth.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely that end part, I sporadically watched post-WCW and gave up for years post Benoit. Punk brought me back so big points for that win. Sad thing is outside of Punk and Bryan, most of the title changes are paint by numbers reactionary things trying to take hold of trends already past.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to say Macho's first but that was overbooked and had the specter of Hogan lurking from the get go. For as many times as Flair's been in it, outside of the Rumble and Race, they never really had a big feel to it.
If push came to shove and Punk/Bryan were out of the picture, I'd lean Warrior/Hogan. For those involved, wasn't a horrible match, was the first big face/face style match from when I was a kid. Enough uncertainty on who would actually win.
and he did it with a new gimmick, to boot
ReplyDeleteDon't have time to scroll down. Did anyone say Booker T winning at BATB 2000? You already know why it's my favorite.
ReplyDeleteYou must be referring to the 8th time. His 7th time he only overcame an odd. His 8th time he overcame multiple odds
ReplyDeleteMy uncle told me about it. Says it's a night he'll never forget. The night with Patterson that is.
ReplyDelete
