This is actually quite tame for a speedrun, really. The speedrunning community in general has gotten extremely polished since the advent of tool-assisted speedrunning, and nowadays you see some sick, sick platforming skills in games like Super Mario World and Mega Man that don't even seem human.
TASVideos has the WR at 4:57.31, but thats with using an emulator and doing frame-by-frame advancing and usage of savestates, basically meaning perfect robot-esque play(at least until the next time-saving bug appears). This appears to be pretty damn close. I suspect he lost the .38 with his approach at the end of 8-3 but I'm not certain.
Part of the reason this is so fast is that theres certain tricks involved that save small amounts of time that add up. Note the way he interacts with the flag at the end of each level.
1. He seems to enjoy waving his dick in death's face at times, especially with the underwater fire-spinners in World 8.
2. I like how he triggers things like Starmen and leaves them behind LIKE A BOSS. "Oh, yeah, invincibility. Right. No, you can have it if you want. I don't need it."
I'm almost certain a Hammer Bro would've ended several of this guy's practise runs leading up to this. I think randomness determines their position in 8-3, meaning sometimes you just cannot pass them without either slowing and losing time or dying and losing even more time.
Occasionally death would bite the dick though. This isn't something that can be busted out with high accuracy. I suspect sometimes there'd be a slowdown or a hammer brother spawns in an inconvenient place and then he resets. Looking at the TASVideos run, whoever did this is literally .38 of a second away from a robot-esque, perfect reflexes run of this game, barring anymore glitches that haven't been discovered yet.
To put this run in perspective: The warpless run on TASVideos (Completing all 32 levels using emulator tools like frame by frame advancing and savestates to simulate perfect reflexes) is a robust 18:38.22. A run beating all 32 levels under the same conditions but without using the B button to run once gets a 25:30.05
Bless those boys.
ReplyDeleteOh Scott, you ain't seen nothing yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you've heard of that game
ReplyDelete*rents game*
ReplyDelete*Beats game in 5 minutes
*returns game to Blockbuster 5 minutes later*
"What's a Blockbuster?" - some kid
ReplyDeleteSo sad.
ReplyDeleteI miss renting VHS tapes,so much stuff I watched from that.
ReplyDeleteYeah I guess VHS held out just a little longer, uhh, "down there".
ReplyDeleteI got the end of the VHS generation around 2000-2002,then it became all DVD.
ReplyDeleteDo you guys have Blu-Ray yet? Or HD DVD?
ReplyDeleteOF course there is Blu-Ray.I'm just saying that around 2000 there was still people having VHS tapes.
ReplyDeleteThere were still people selling VHS here until 2002 or so. VHS hung on for a LONG time.
ReplyDeleteThey havin' a World Cup, I know that.
ReplyDelete*Facepalm*
ReplyDeleteBig deal. I do that every morning before I go to work. One-handed.
ReplyDeleteHey man, *my* country (Canada) is the only one seriously looking at bidding for the 2026 one.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, eventually I may very well myself see the "wrath of FIFA".
Two things:
ReplyDelete1) He could have beaten World 4-1 faster if he had used one of the pipes, I just can't remember which one cuts the level in half.
2) I had NO IDEA that the pipe in World 4-2 led to the same place as the beanstalk. Fucking crazy.
Too bad I have to wait for the YouTube uploaders to go to work on that. Twitch hates me for some reason.
ReplyDeleteThat guy gave zero fucks. Ran right past Bowser like he wasn't there.
ReplyDeleteOK, watching the speed run now. Holy crap. I would lose my shit trying to do this in under 5 minutes.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there's any room for improvement there at all, or how much room there is.

ReplyDeleteInteresting. I'll have to do some YouTubing.
ReplyDeleteThey still have saloons with a black and white silent projection, and there's a guy in the corner playin' the ol' pianee.
ReplyDeleteThe piranha plants cannot be treated so lightly!
ReplyDeleteAnd the real question is did the dude actually do that, or is there some mod or something now that can just do it for you? I know nothing.

Down where??
ReplyDeleteYeah, but at the end of the day, he doesn't have enough Mario coins to pay for all the stuff Princess Toadstool is going to be demanding.
ReplyDeleteMario's got 99 Problems, and she's about 92 of them.
Holy shit I thought the previous record was like 6 minutes.
ReplyDeleteI recently went back and had a blast replaying Mega Man 2 and 3. No speed run though.
ReplyDeleteWhen I would try to beat this as a kid, that Hammer Brother right before the final Bowser used to terrify me if I didn't have flower power.

ReplyDeleteIncredible.
ReplyDeleteDown where?
ReplyDeleteAnd the whores all have VD

ReplyDeleteBrazil.
ReplyDeleteBrazil. And not Bobo.

ReplyDeleteso many near brushes with death...
ReplyDeleteHeres the run without using the B button, featuring Mario moonwalking like a smooth criminal. You might think I'm kidding. I'm not.
