How much do you think Rogers paid them for the exclusivity deal? I need to look up how much the FX deal was for because I bet it'll be a similar number.
That said... if anyone ever needed any proof it's different up here, the fact that the network actually is a network should do it.
The wording of the press release makes it sound like it's exclusively a cable system deal like 24/7 was, in which case I can't see it doing any better. If it's not the current OVER THE TOP Roku setup, then fuck that and I'll just continue being a citizen of Fayetteville, LA. The likelihood of non-Rogers cable systems picking this up after the failure of 24/7 seems low, too. Plus it's a dollar more. Unimpressed.
It says it will include on demand content.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm not Canadian, so I don't know who Rodgers is. Sounds like Conmcast's equally dickish little brother.
It'll include it via Rogers' app, which you have to subscribe to Rogers to use and is on very limited devices. Rogers itself is not an option west of Ontario.
ReplyDeleteWhere does it say that? It says current programming aka Raw,Smackdown & Main Event (Now back on TV) will be available to watch online but not the WWE Network type stuff which isn't even official until it gets the CRTC stamp of approval.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah and what's the FX Deal?
ReplyDeleteSo Fred Rogers strikes again.........................
ReplyDeleteWe gotta work on your southern drawwwwwwl.
ReplyDeleteI love how most of today's news hasn't even been about 700k. It's mostly been about angry Canadians.
ReplyDeleteEqually dickish? Oh, you have no idea. Imagine Comcast taking over ESPN and its competitors and forcing those networks to have a bullshit homogenized format that strips any soul remaining in its programming. And then they combine that with shitty cell phone service that somehow justifies its existence by being a different kind of shitty than its competitors, and an even worse cable/internet service.
ReplyDeleteIn short, obviosuly WWE would sign a deal with them. Who the fuck else would they do it with?
I hope when the FCC gives the Comcast-Time Warner merger the go ahead that it leads to a significant consumer backlash. But it probably won't.
ReplyDeleteBret Hart gave today's news a 4/10.
ReplyDeleteI don't have Comcast right now (Time Warner Cable). TWC isn't too much better on customer service, but we don't have any bandwidth caps or anything. I'm praying that the proposed merger between the two is killed off.
ReplyDeleterogers is even on his list of the 1000 best cable companies
ReplyDeleteI can't give the Network my business anyways. Rogers just made it a permanent death zone.
ReplyDelete~CANADIAN VIOLENCE
ReplyDeleteI would take Al the Homeless Man's Dial-Up Internet Service over fucking Rogers.
ReplyDeletei'd like to think they're all like ike from south park
ReplyDeleteand lots of "buddy/friend/guy" jabs being thrown around
The ironic thing is that Rogers is such a piece of shit I literally chose a provincial government owned internet service over it. A friend of mine works there and a lot of the ex-employees consist of people from Rogers and similar companies that are so thrilled to be working in an actual, non-dysfunctional workplace.
ReplyDeleteOF course, he could be lying to keep my money going, but I pay $50 for something that never goes kaput even in gale raining sideways conditions and has no bandwidth. something tells me thats the best deal I can get in Canadian Arkansas.
We destroyed the vile music industry, hopefully the cable companies are next, c'mon internet don't fail me now.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't necessarily call myself a champion of big government, but I do like the idea of municipal services establishing their own broadband networks. Unfortunately, some states (like Tennessee) are being lobbied by Comcast and other media conglomerates to outright prohibit cities from doing so. So ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteDefine not an option? I'm pretty sure a few of my friend use it for cell phone service. Do you mean cable only or somesuch?
ReplyDeleteDidn't iTunes kinda revive some aspects of it? I know that cna be worked around, or so I was told every time I considered getting an iPod, but surely that helped stop the bleeding somewhat?
ReplyDelete(Not that piracy caused the money well to dry up, that being more the fault of music execs pushing an increasingly stale product on the airwaves but still)
Well sure obviously the industry still exists but it had to go through a decade long learning process as to how to function without going full bore in attempting to fuck your customers. Hopefully the same will happen to cable at some point.
ReplyDeletesomething something...Tim Hortons
ReplyDeleteI hope that AJ Is going to jump out if the TV and give me a blowjob. That actually seems more likely.
ReplyDeleteSadly they are one step ahead of us by controlling the broadband we need to destroy them.
ReplyDeleteI'm a nervous cordcutter. I'm a huge football fan and I even though my antenna can pull in fox, NBC and CBS some of those are pretty spotty.
Ummm... yeah the NFL tried to have their streaming content exclusive to Bell... and the CRTC shut it down. Exclusivity is not legal in Canada.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah WWE, this won't work.
Pretty sure it doesn't matter if it's over-the-top, regular network, or what, CRTC has ruled before that it doesn't actually matter... of course they sometimes randomly change their minds too, so we'll see.
ReplyDeletehe's too busy with the bullet club
ReplyDeleteFUN FACT : According to the CRTC, wrestling is a sport. Except when they decide that it isn't.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm guessing and reading from other sources the uk deal will be similar to this and not be over the top...sky sports is already to expensive here...I'm gutted if this is the case...
ReplyDeleteAll of this sounds overly complicated.
ReplyDeletePeople don't like WWE.
ReplyDeleteWWE bad.
Very Canadian.
ReplyDelete"Plus it's a dollar more."
ReplyDeleteI was expected 5 or 6 bucks more myself... then again it could come free with a Rogers subscription, and I still wouldn't be getting it...
I still have my old flip phone from 2008. Let's just say that technology intimidates me.
ReplyDeleteDid you type this after logging on to Prodigy?
ReplyDeleteNailed it.
ReplyDeleteWait....ESPN doesn't already "have a bullshit homogenized format that strips any soul remaining in its programming"? Because I think it does.
ReplyDeleteRogers has their Rogers Anytime app for online content, much like Shaw. And you have to be a subscriber to access it.
ReplyDeleteFX Canada is majority owned by Rogers. People *think* it's exclusive to Rogers, because all the commericals for it say "NOT AVAILABLE ON BELL" but actually, Bell just doesn't want to pay what Rogers is asking for it.
ReplyDeleteHe'll be watching the WWE Network on Rogers with tears in his eyes.
ReplyDeleteWho's Rogers?
ReplyDeleteEvil Canadian cable company.
ReplyDeleteNor to the east (well, maybe New Brunswick). But not to the rest of us here in Atlantic Canada.
ReplyDeleteAny other spots available in Fayetteville?
So...does all this means that WWE probably shouldn't count on the majority of the 700,000 subscribers coming from Canada? (Or the UK, for that matter, if I'm read this right?)
ReplyDeleteI'm about to go back to my flip phone. I have no use for this bulky smartphone I have.
ReplyDeleteIt ensures that they still won't break 1,000,000 by the end of Q3.
ReplyDeleteTJ: for those who havent watched the bret timeline yet... not out of January and bret pulls the stories back to him three times!
ReplyDeleteTalk abt hulk/steroids... bret talks abt himself
Talk abt hogan/flair house shows... bret talks abt himself
Talk abt the rockers breakup.... you guessed it...
Get some popcorn...
You know, at first I was thinking there'd be a big drop off post Summerslam, but the more I think about it, I wonder if ~700k is a decent look at the hardest of hard core fans. Break even or even a million is a while away but I'm actually changing course and think they stay fairly close to this number come 9/30
ReplyDeleteI was wondering why Canada wasn't included in the initial launch. Didn't realize the hurdles they likely had to jump through to even get this seemingly unsatisfactory deal. This can't be what WWE actually wanted, right?
ReplyDeleteSomething like WWE Network actually requires regulatory approval.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's far from a rubber-stamp...
ReplyDeleteBret's gotta be Bret!
ReplyDeleteCome on man, it's a network for GUYS, they do GUY stuff and talk about GUY issues and when the people that don't even watch it get offended they fire GUYS.
ReplyDeleteNow I want every Raw to start like that.
ReplyDeleteWith a tear, in his eye.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait. There are tears in my eyes already.
ReplyDeleteThat was AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteHere in Newfoundland you can't get Rogers to work anywhere but St. John's.
ReplyDeleteDean Amrbose flying over the couch is so perfect for what they were going for.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if he's not just working the gimmick at this point.
ReplyDeleteHe was getting killed on Twitter for that, and of course only provided smart ass responses instead of noticing that a lot of people had the same criticism.
ReplyDeleteEvidently there is news on Figure Four Wrestling that the Canadian Network will not have the full on-demand library. There will be on-demand content, but not the full library until at least the end of 2015.
ReplyDeleteBut please, pay extra for a lower quality service!
ReplyDeleteHard pass
that's straight out of the 80's!
ReplyDeletethat's what i told my calculus teacher in high school
ReplyDeleteA lot of people in music/TV/gaming/etc like to blame economical problems on cheapasses that download stuff for free instead of paying. Well jesus, if our option is low-quality shit like this, how can we not pirate?
ReplyDeleteNot to mention, based on some of the stuff here, I'd have second thoughts about the network in general even with the IP exploit. Apparently its hard to back out, and they appear to be holding stuff hostage til late August to hook back the people in September. Not to mention the PPV stream issues.
Honestly, I thought WWE could make a killing off this. Lets say there are 3 million reliable WWE fans in NA. WWE should've been more than capable of hooking 33% of that. And they couldn't.

ReplyDeleteWatching it now and Bret just gave Arnold Schwarzenegger's mistress a 2 out of 10. That's even lower than Triple H. She must be bad.
ReplyDeleteSince I started: down to 280 from around 300 (or so)
ReplyDeleteEspecially 1997.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm a huge Bret fan that thinks your act is played-out (I'm talking Hulkamania in late 1995 played-out), it's actually good to have someone around here to troll Bret and his fans because he kinda deserves it. I listened to his interview with Meltzer the other day and Jesus Christ. While talking about working heel vs working babyface, Bret somehow got into talking Royal Rumble '95 and how easily he could have turned the crowd against Diesel but he didn't because he's such a great guy and true professional. But two months later was Wrestlemania 11 and YOU'LL NEVER GUESS who DID turn the crowd against Diesel. I mean come on, Bret. He mentions this in his book and he mentions it on the greatest rivalry DVD (which is fine and kinda warranted to prove his point that Shawn was a dick who only cared about himself), but STILL talking about it? On Meltzer's show? Nash seems over it. Bret has (for the most part) buried the hatchet with Shawn. Why still bury him in interviews over such petty bullshit?
ReplyDeleteMeh you're just mad because you don't live in a real country where you can easily get all of this stuff at a reasonable price.
ReplyDelete#WeThePeople
I'm so tired of these Canadians complaining about everything. Jesus we get it, you're country sucks. Man up and start a war with Russia or something, then maybe you'd have cooler internet!
ReplyDeleteLulz
ReplyDeleteOne more thing has been passing my mind since I wrote my earlier answer, the fact that they would give Scott Steiner a live Mic so often. There was a time period the main draw of TNA was seeing what Steiner would do and day that week. The percentages promos is still one of the unintentionally funniest things in the world.
ReplyDeleteNot quite WCW 98 level but spot on all the same.
ReplyDeleteUpvote for the hashtag.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see Michael Cole sell that on RAW, although that will probably not be able to be seen by U.S. viewers.
ReplyDeleteThey are such barbarians! I hear that some of them drink water that comes from a tap!
ReplyDeleteCanada: They're not even a real country anyway!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Bret masterbates to his own matches with a tear in his eye.
ReplyDeleteThis! This! A million times this! They were never going to catch on with kids, families or any major players in TV as Tits and Ass Wrestling. How hard would it have been to change the name considering the NWA and WWF both did it? Impact Wrestling would have been FINE.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair Russia would kill Canada then Canada would come begging to the US for help.
ReplyDeleteCage moment not again equaled until the Showtime Kick from Anthony Pettis at WEC 53.
ReplyDeleteAll of those feuds are from many years ago.
ReplyDeleteI saw one eat an apple at the grocery store... didn't even go home to rinse it off!
ReplyDeleteSeconded. It's what got me to watch them in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that this post lasted 7 hours without it being removed.
ReplyDeleteAh, the American solution to everything - start a war with somebody!
ReplyDeleteSavages!
ReplyDeleteI thought he got talked down from quitting. Did he actually?
ReplyDeleteEwwwww
ReplyDeleteTNA became a stink on guys where WWE didn't even want their obviously valuable top players. TNA damages your brand.
ReplyDeleteEven just do a civil war vs Quebec or something. It will probably make your internet run faster.
ReplyDeleteMan, Napoleon and Hitler couldn't beat Russia neither!
ReplyDeleteOK, so I just read through all the comments. I can't believe no one else has said this yet, I thought it would be obvious.
ReplyDeleteBrooke Tessmacher's ass.
Remember how they tried to get over Undertaker as "The conscience of the WWE" ... Styles really was that for TNA and the bottom fell out hard without him.
ReplyDeleteThey should have been handled the way the WWE treats Cena, Undertaker and HHH.
ReplyDeletePffttt the best Quebec have ever pulled off in that regard is blowing up some mailboxes and kidnapping some government employees. They just don't have a civil war in 'em, guy.
ReplyDeleteSo, question for someone just reading about this. Does this mean that you can only get the Network if you're subscribed with Rogers? I'm will Bell, I think, so that means I can't get it?
ReplyDeleteAlways good to start with a weak target. Just invade Quebec, round up some frenchies, shoot em, declare martial law and Boom you got a nice W for yourselves
ReplyDeleteYou're fucked dude, just do what Scott does
ReplyDeleteThis TNA died a long time ago, but I think of the weekly PPVs as my local fed, my dad would sometimes get free tickets to go to the show and my dad and I would go, it wasn't WWE, but the environment was so much better as a fan and we had a pretty good time at the shows we went to.
ReplyDeleteWe did that in the 70s. We didn't shoot any of 'em though, but we sent the army in and rounded up the "usual suspects" while the real bad guys fled to Cuba. People didn't really consider it a W.
ReplyDeleteREALLY fat.
ReplyDeleteSo what happened with the nfl
ReplyDeleteI went to a TNA house show in NH about 7 years ago. My memory is the Daniels/Styles vs Team 3D match. Styles did a headlock take down, I yelled "good take down AJ!" Daniels responded with "we don't need your support!"
ReplyDeleteNo, they'll eventually have to allow Bell to have it *if* they want it. But that does not guarantee Bell picks it up.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if Canadian fans behaved themselves better at wwe live events you wouldn't have gotten some watered down shit version of the Network.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the WWE really needs to make more business contacts. They should work on their networking skills.
ReplyDeleteFinished it earlier, very good addition. I think id put in the Top 5 best Timelines
ReplyDeleteGlad he atleast gave an opinion on stuff he might not have known about instead of the "I dont know I wasent there" answer a bunch of other guys spout
Even Michael J. Fox shakes his head at the amount of whining Canada does.
ReplyDelete#TheySaidTheydHurtMyDaughterIfIDidntMakeThatJoke
Yea I got a kick out of that. As bitter and egotistical as he comes off, he's still a phenomenal story teller and can make you laugh
ReplyDeleteHa no kidding
ReplyDeleteToday was a work day, and so I'm very drunk.
ReplyDeleteWhat I've read about the network in Canada is bullshit, and seeing as I'm a cord cutter, I won't be buying it any time, pbably ever.
He goes into it on the Timeline. Saying he talked to Pillman and said Pillman was making more than he was, but his WWF contract didnt expire til September so it was nothing more than just talks
ReplyDeleteAnd can't believe that nobody has answered "Tits aNd Ass".
ReplyDeleteWasn't that the whole point of naming it TNA?
What? I said it below and provided a GIF!
ReplyDeletehttp://i.imgur.com/HmBpPB8.gif
Bret can't masturbate. He'd poke his eye out.
ReplyDeleteFunny that for all the complaints about Canada being bizarro world, Philly and Chicago do the same shit
ReplyDeleteI went to a TNA house show around 6 years ago, and a PPV the same year. They were both pretty fun.
ReplyDeleteWell to be fair, if you agree to something for six months -- and you know that is the deal going in ahead of time -- then it *SHOULD* be hard to cancel.
ReplyDeleteThey did make very vague promises of what would be available and people beleived what they wanted -- that lead to disappointment. That doesn't necessarily mean those disappointed people should be let out of their committment.
Canada has worse Internet than the US, or just an inability to to access cool shit without pretneding that Saskatoon is in Louisiana.
ReplyDeleteI thought Canada's logo was "Even WE don't like Quebec."
ReplyDeleteIf they don't close down, I would like to go to one of those.
ReplyDeleteHere's a thought I had today: Would the WWE Network have been better off debuting with the entire DVD back catalog online on Day 1 instead of the ppv back catalog? People were interested in the "Attitude era" content and there would have been tons of documentaries available on Austin, Rock, Foley, HHH, DX, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, the nWo, the Monday Night Wars, Bests of Raw, Nitro, and Smackdown, Hogan, Flair, Savage, Big Shows, the Best of the 90s, the Rise and Fall of ECW, the Divas... I mean as a huge wrestling geek, being able to watch Capital Combat 90, I love (and let's face it, I'm buying the Network anyway), but maybe to a broader swath of wrestling fans (who were watching religously and in droves during the Monday Night Wars), maybe the DVD catalog would have been more enticing.
ReplyDeleteWow, congrats Paul.
ReplyDeleteForget it. I shouldn't HAVE to do a work-around. I SHOULD be able to do it the same, easy way everyone else can down in the states. If they're not willing to provide the same Netflix-like service, then fuck them.
ReplyDeleteBut it still doesn't work like Netflix like it does in the states. So forget it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he was WWF1987 in early June, then he got in a fight with Cult so he quit and left the blog for a day.
ReplyDeleteI know that, Abey. I'm not a newbie. I thought you meant this week after the TNA news.
ReplyDeleteAnd the post WM crowds.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies for missing it.
ReplyDeleteJust one big glorified state.
ReplyDeleteAs was the goofy shot of the Authority.
ReplyDeleteSo, Bret screwed Bret?
ReplyDeleteNo, he was going to, but then he went to his happy place of saying TNA is going to be ok.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought happened.
ReplyDeleteFuck Rogers.
ReplyDeleteFuck Bell, too.
So both him and Gagne got it?
ReplyDeleteWell, Bret did lose the IC title just after Shango cursed him.
ReplyDeleteNash mentions that match in a shoot, and he said he knew going into it Shawn would try to outwork him because it was Shawn's opportunity to show what he could do in the main event. He laughs about it, doesn't seem at all bothered by it. I don't really get Bret's complaint - you think if Bret was in Shawn's shoes he wouldn't work his ass off to prove himself? He mentions in his book a couple of times him going out determined to steal the show and prove Vince, Shawn, Hogan or whoever he was pissed off at at the time wrong, how is that different? And if he was so concerned about Diesel's fate, why not just put him over himself? I don't see why feels he should be praised for giving him a draw and not sabotaging him.
ReplyDeleteThey fucked that up the last couple of years also...
ReplyDeleteI think Verne is just a case of senile dementia and Nick has Alzheimer's proper.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't think they finished the first match, Heenan just came out and told them to wrap it up...probably did a DQ or something and "WWF officials have ordered a rematch" later in the show.
ReplyDeleteHas the entire match ever been shown? I only remember the highlights on Superstars.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Keep at it man!
ReplyDeleteWell.. Guess What?? I should have free healthcare, but I don't.. so as a workaround, I don't fucking get sick!! Fuck you and your Canadian sense of entitlement.
ReplyDelete#WeThePeople
Trudeau did declare the war measures act and roll the tanks into Quebec just over 30 years ago.
ReplyDeleteTrudeau id one of my favourite prime ministers to study, mostly for moments like this
"When CBC reporter Tim Ralfe asked how far he was willing to go to stop the FLQ, Trudeau replied: "Just watch me".
Yeah, I'd take a shitty version of the Network in exchange for free healthcare (checks how many miles it is to the Canadian border).
ReplyDeleteIvory is the GOAT
ReplyDeleteWell that must be why they are going to screw UK fans too.
ReplyDeleteAHHHH Prodigy and Where in the World is Carmen San Diego game racking up huge phone bills for my parents.
ReplyDeleteI kinda agree and disagree. Surly Shawn (or anybody) has to show what they can do at Wrestlemania when given the opportunity to main-event (it may never come again). On the other hand, his job here is to make Diesel a stronger babyface while remaining a heel himself.
ReplyDeleteEither way, that's not the real problem with the match. It's that spot where Shawn hits the kick for the pin while Hebner is tied up in the ropes. Much like Savage having the pin on Steamboat at WM3, I'll never understand the logic of having your babyface champion look like such a loser. Steamboat and Diesel both looked like losers after those matches.
I think Shawn/Diesel were scheduled to have a rematch at the 1st In Your House pay per view, so I'm guessing that spot was to create some controversy to give Shawn a reason to want another match. In Shawn's book he mentions him and Nash arguing with Vince that the crowd would shit on Nash for kicking out strong there but that's how Vince wanted it. Shawn was actually pissed off about the whole situation because they suddenly turned him face and sent him home for 6 weeks while they figured out what do to with him, according to his book at least.
ReplyDelete"Who are you to doubt El-izabeth?"
ReplyDelete
