Network

How much do you think Rogers paid them for the exclusivity deal? I need to look up how much the FX deal was for because I bet it'll be a similar number.

That said... if anyone ever needed any proof it's different up here, the fact that the network actually is a network should do it.

The wording of the press release makes it sound like it's exclusively a cable system deal like 24/7 was, in which case I can't see it doing any better.  If it's not the current OVER THE TOP Roku setup, then fuck that and I'll just continue being a citizen of Fayetteville, LA.   The likelihood of non-Rogers cable systems picking this up after the failure of 24/7 seems low, too.  Plus it's a dollar more.  Unimpressed.

Comments

  1. It says it will include on demand content.

But I'm not Canadian, so I don't know who Rodgers is. Sounds like Conmcast's equally dickish little brother.

    ReplyDelete
  2. It'll include it via Rogers' app, which you have to subscribe to Rogers to use and is on very limited devices. Rogers itself is not an option west of Ontario.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Where does it say that? It says current programming aka Raw,Smackdown & Main Event (Now back on TV) will be available to watch online but not the WWE Network type stuff which isn't even official until it gets the CRTC stamp of approval.

  4. Oh yeah and what's the FX Deal?

  5. So Fred Rogers strikes again.........................

Equally dickish? Oh, you have no idea. Imagine Comcast taking over ESPN and its competitors and forcing those networks to have a bullshit homogenized format that strips any soul remaining in its programming. And then they combine that with shitty cell phone service that somehow justifies its existence by being a different kind of shitty than its competitors, and an even worse cable/internet service.

In short, obviosuly WWE would sign a deal with them. Who the fuck else would they do it with?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I hope when the FCC gives the Comcast-Time Warner merger the go ahead that it leads to a significant consumer backlash. But it probably won't.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Bret Hart gave today's news a 4/10.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't have Comcast right now (Time Warner Cable). TWC isn't too much better on customer service, but we don't have any bandwidth caps or anything. I'm praying that the proposed merger between the two is killed off.

The ironic thing is that Rogers is such a piece of shit I literally chose a provincial government owned internet service over it. A friend of mine works there and a lot of the ex-employees consist of people from Rogers and similar companies that are so thrilled to be working in an actual, non-dysfunctional workplace.

OF course, he could be lying to keep my money going, but I pay $50 for something that never goes kaput even in gale raining sideways conditions and has no bandwidth. something tells me thats the best deal I can get in Canadian Arkansas.

  18. We destroyed the vile music industry, hopefully the cable companies are next, c'mon internet don't fail me now.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wouldn't necessarily call myself a champion of big government, but I do like the idea of municipal services establishing their own broadband networks. Unfortunately, some states (like Tennessee) are being lobbied by Comcast and other media conglomerates to outright prohibit cities from doing so. So ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  20. TM CooltrainerBretJuly 31, 2014 at 1:20 PM

Didn't iTunes kinda revive some aspects of it? I know that cna be worked around, or so I was told every time I considered getting an iPod, but surely that helped stop the bleeding somewhat?

(Not that piracy caused the money well to dry up, that being more the fault of music execs pushing an increasingly stale product on the airwaves but still)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well sure obviously the industry still exists but it had to go through a decade long learning process as to how to function without going full bore in attempting to fuck your customers. Hopefully the same will happen to cable at some point.

So yeah WWE, this won't work.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

A lot of people in music/TV/gaming/etc like to blame economical problems on cheapasses that download stuff for free instead of paying. Well jesus, if our option is low-quality shit like this, how can we not pirate?

Not to mention, based on some of the stuff here, I'd have second thoughts about the network in general even with the IP exploit. Apparently its hard to back out, and they appear to be holding stuff hostage til late August to hook back the people in September. Not to mention the PPV stream issues.

Honestly, I thought WWE could make a killing off this. Lets say there are 3 million reliable WWE fans in NA. WWE should've been more than capable of hooking 33% of that. And they couldn't.

  68. While I'm a huge Bret fan that thinks your act is played-out (I'm talking Hulkamania in late 1995 played-out), it's actually good to have someone around here to troll Bret and his fans because he kinda deserves it. I listened to his interview with Meltzer the other day and Jesus Christ. While talking about working heel vs working babyface, Bret somehow got into talking Royal Rumble '95 and how easily he could have turned the crowd against Diesel but he didn't because he's such a great guy and true professional. But two months later was Wrestlemania 11 and YOU'LL NEVER GUESS who DID turn the crowd against Diesel. I mean come on, Bret. He mentions this in his book and he mentions it on the greatest rivalry DVD (which is fine and kinda warranted to prove his point that Shawn was a dick who only cared about himself), but STILL talking about it? On Meltzer's show? Nash seems over it. Bret has (for the most part) buried the hatchet with Shawn. Why still bury him in interviews over such petty bullshit?

    ReplyDelete

  118. Here's a thought I had today: Would the WWE Network have been better off debuting with the entire DVD back catalog online on Day 1 instead of the ppv back catalog? People were interested in the "Attitude era" content and there would have been tons of documentaries available on Austin, Rock, Foley, HHH, DX, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, the nWo, the Monday Night Wars, Bests of Raw, Nitro, and Smackdown, Hogan, Flair, Savage, Big Shows, the Best of the 90s, the Rise and Fall of ECW, the Divas... I mean as a huge wrestling geek, being able to watch Capital Combat 90, I love (and let's face it, I'm buying the Network anyway), but maybe to a broader swath of wrestling fans (who were watching religously and in droves during the Monday Night Wars), maybe the DVD catalog would have been more enticing.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Nash mentions that match in a shoot, and he said he knew going into it Shawn would try to outwork him because it was Shawn's opportunity to show what he could do in the main event. He laughs about it, doesn't seem at all bothered by it. I don't really get Bret's complaint - you think if Bret was in Shawn's shoes he wouldn't work his ass off to prove himself? He mentions in his book a couple of times him going out determined to steal the show and prove Vince, Shawn, Hogan or whoever he was pissed off at at the time wrong, how is that different? And if he was so concerned about Diesel's fate, why not just put him over himself? I don't see why feels he should be praised for giving him a draw and not sabotaging him.

  145. I kinda agree and disagree. Surly Shawn (or anybody) has to show what they can do at Wrestlemania when given the opportunity to main-event (it may never come again). On the other hand, his job here is to make Diesel a stronger babyface while remaining a heel himself.

Either way, that's not the real problem with the match. It's that spot where Shawn hits the kick for the pin while Hebner is tied up in the ropes. Much like Savage having the pin on Steamboat at WM3, I'll never understand the logic of having your babyface champion look like such a loser. Steamboat and Diesel both looked like losers after those matches.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I think Shawn/Diesel were scheduled to have a rematch at the 1st In Your House pay per view, so I'm guessing that spot was to create some controversy to give Shawn a reason to want another match. In Shawn's book he mentions him and Nash arguing with Vince that the crowd would shit on Nash for kicking out strong there but that's how Vince wanted it. Shawn was actually pissed off about the whole situation because they suddenly turned him face and sent him home for 6 weeks while they figured out what do to with him, according to his book at least.
