From the organization that's gaining television contracts, not losing them!
Southern States Wrestling Power Half Hour
July 27th, 2014
After the Jerry Lawler intro we get yet another tweak on the opening montage, with some fairly recent action mixed in including Ricky Morton in tag action and the Triple Jump Elbow of Doom. Putting on their best face for the execs at Heritage TV!
Week 2 of freedom for Joe Wheeler, so Beau James is here to run his mouth off at 170 miles an hour in front of SSW Sign That's Too Big For This Shot Event Center.
Beau harkens back to the SSW Mission Statement that I referenced on my debut write-up: Bastardize The Past, Lie About The Present, and Rape The Future. Or something like that. To that end, Beau is happy to announce that this week's show is the first to air in Northern Virginia on Heritage TV. Oh wait, that's NORTON, Virginia. Well, close enough. He also gives a shout out to the remainder of his television empire, as well as the unlikely viewer in New Zealand watching the show on YouTube.
Sorry, Crikey. Maybe if you pound the refresh key a few times you'll get the shout out next time.
But back to business. Last week, DeAndre Jackson was robbed of the Southern States Wrestling Heavyweight Championship by an inept referee, likely on the receiving end of another bad check by the reigning champion Kyle Kool. How much money on the plastic surgery, brother!?
Beau uses this as a platform to spend the next five minutes reviewing the Jackson/Kool feud that has ranged on for month. Go ahead and check it out for yourself. I don't do re-rants.
Bottom line, Equalizer Krunch wants revenge for his bad check, DeAndre Jackson is getting a rematch just as soon as they can find a bingo hall that a ring can fit inside, and Ray Idol is gunning for that SSW title as well. How much longer can Kyle Kool hold on?
But speaking of champions, there's a NEW champion in Southern States Wrestling, and Beau's gonna tell us about it soon. Plus, Misty James gets a shot at regaining the SSW Ladies Title against current champion Rebecca Lynn. For realz this time!
Same commercials as last week. I've half a mind to ask Beau how much he wants for 30 seconds of air time, and create a Blog of Doom commercial for his show.
There were only three minutes of commercials being shown, so let's have Beau spend another minute talking about them.
Rebecca Lynn is the ladies champion, but she won that title by nefarious means. Let's see them yet again, and then let's go to highlights of the rematch at the Gray Block Party!
Yep. She cheated. Sucks to be you, Misty.
Southern States Wrestling Ladies Championship: Rebecca Lynn (c) vs Misty James
Beau tells us that the match is being joined in progress. Apparently Misty James hit a shitty armdrag before this footage began, so she hits another shitty armdrag so that guy in New Zealand can appreciate it as well. Misty James is all about fan service!
Misty grabs the hair and slams Rebecca Lynn into the turnbuckle before throwing her into the middle of the ring with a shitty hiptoss. Sorry, but I just can't find an appropriate synonym for "shitty" that adequately describes Misty's offense.
After a quick two count Misty hits a shi...er, a a lazy-ass vertical suplex that requires Rebecca Lynn to do all of the work for another 2.0001 count. Grrrr....
Will the nerd in the overalls please sit down!??
Rebecca takes over with about 30 seconds of SSW Ladies Offense before Misty reverses. I will say that Misty gives a much better chop than Rebecca...but she throws away any good will by hitting a....a...damn it, it was a SHITTY biel! There is no other word of any kind to accurately convey the nuances of a Misty James throw!
Rebecca James takes over somehow; there's no psychology, it was just time for her to do so. Cinching in on the Two Minute Mark Resthold, I imagine Rebecca and Misty are racking their brains trying to come up with a screwjob finish that they haven't done before.
Misty takes over and hits the worst Macho Man clothesline I have ever seen, but it was still strong enough to keep Rebecca down for a whopping 2.2 count.
They do an entertaining strong style punch off that begs for a dueling BOO!/YEAH! chant that never happens, but that's too good for television, so let's skip ahead to a rest hold.
Actually, Beau, let us just skip ahead to the finish. Rebecca throws Misty into the ropes and attempts a clothesline, but they're both so loopy that they just clang heads and collapse instead. That's good enough to keep both competitors down for a ten count, presenting us with yet another novel screw job to keep this eternal feud continuing.
Double countout in unknown time due to An Insult To Our Collective Intelligence. Rebecca Lynn retains her title.
Wasn't enough of the match shown to rate, but I'm sure it was something between -* and -***. It might be raised another half star if I'm allowed to count the spirited post-match brawl though. If they'd forget trying to do wrestling holds that they both suck at and just go balls-to-the-walls fighting like that for two or three minutes, you'd hear no complaints from me.
Back to Beau, who tells us about another recent show where Rebecca successfully defended her title against Misty, and also namedrops Miss Rachel and her sidekick Whasshername. Didn't expect to hear Miss Rachael's name on television again...maybe he's trying to patch things up with LT Falk? Beau had better hurry up before he's locked in to NXT.
Next week, we go around the country with Misty James, seeing the sights, facing the top competitors, and killing time that was supposed to be filled by the TV tapings last week!
Oh, there's a new TV champion, and his name is Jake Booth! Of course, you can't see the television title change hands on television, so you'll just have to check out the fancam footage of that epic two star match.
After the commercials, we get:
Southern States Wrestling Tennessee Champion, Southern States Wrestling TV Champion, and 1/2 of the Southern States Wrestling Tag Team Champions Jake Booth vs Equalizer Krunch
No, they're not shoving this red-headed stepchild down your throats, why do you ask?
I'm not sure why this match was happening on the same show where the six-man tag was supposed to take place, but it's a sad state of affairs when your talent pool is so depleted that you're forced to use Jake Fucking Booth twice to fill out a show.
I guess Krunch is a tweener now, or he just goes where the money is? It might be an interesting role if it weren't being filled by a sexagenarian.
As you can tell, I'm doing everything that I possibly can to get out of talking about the match. You really want to know about it? Well, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here's my quota filled:
The end comes when Jake Booth applies an Australia Sleeper hold taught to him by Bill Dundee, because Bill Dundee is fucking broke, and Joe Briggs and Scott Sterling run in for the DQ.
Winner in who knows how long via Fuck You Fans, Jake Booth. -******************
There is absolutely no mention of Frank Parker, leading me to believe that he has jumped ship to the greener pastures of TNA.
Beau James and that badass Dakota Booth run off the bad guys with chairs. Good for them.
Beau James and his septuple XL turquoise blue pancho are back to wrap up the show, talking about how Scott Sterling is so embarrassed at having been defeated in singles competition not once, not twice, but three times by Jake Booth. Then why the hell would anyone want to see them fight again? And that's gotta be a lie anyway, because any sane man would kill himself if he got the point in life where he had to lose to Jake Booth even twice.
Next week: a closer look at the SIX MAN WAR! Also, Equalizer Krunch in singles competition, as Chic White is apparently still in jail.
Oh, and Jesus Saves! Everything but this horrible, horrible show.
I will be out for a few weeks on a well-deserved summer holiday. Scott Keith will be filling in during my absence, assuming he's man enough to do so.

You mean Dixie overestimates the value of someone who used to have a bit of success in WWE a long long time ago? I AM SHOCKED!!
ReplyDeleteWhile I think TNA as a company had this coming for a long time, I am saddened to see a lot of its talent unable to really go anywhere else (aside from Japan, perhaps). If they went to WWE - ESPECIALLY if they'd never been there before - I could see Vince being spiteful about and have them job out to Kofi and Dolph every week.
ReplyDeleteI know 2 girls who married guys with the same name as their Dad. I always thought that was a bit weird.
ReplyDeleteOne of the couple went through a rough patch last year and broke up for a while, and that girl then DATED a guy with the same name as her Dad and Husband as well.
Was the name something normal like "Dave"? Because then it is almost possible to write it off but if the name was Alouisis or something like that then it becomes very bizarre.
ReplyDelete"Or Vince could buy TNA and let them run as kind of NXT with separate PPVs and everything."
ReplyDeleteIt worked well when he tried that with WCW.
It IS jaw-dropping in its stupidity. I mean, Spike might not have brought them back anyway because the ratings were stagnant, but when the person in charge doesn't listen to the network's most important guideline (don't hire that fuck-up failure Vince Russo), that pretty much sealed the deal.
ReplyDeleteJust imagine if your boss says to you "I'm willing to go in with you on this project as long as you don't bring XXXXX in on the project" and you go right ahead and bring XXXXX in on the project. What an idiot.
Is the link safe? I'm at work.
ReplyDeleteIt's just a wrestling news site. It's safe.
ReplyDeletePo Tay To
ReplyDeletePo Tot To
Yeah, this is like the 3rd person I've seen brought this up. WWE completely failed running WCW and ECW as separate brands, and both of those had FAR more name value than TNA.
ReplyDeleteWWE already has a minor league brand: NXT. Why would WWE want another full of guys that the company has little or no interest in?
I legit LOL'ed at this. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThen you shouldn't be in the internet! :: Is telling your boss ::
ReplyDeleteI am not going to write them off yet... I have thought they were dead for sure several times in the past... not that I really care.
ReplyDelete"Sting opted not to sign a new deal, instead testing the waters with WWE
ReplyDeletedespite reportedly getting lowballed with a Legends deal instead of a
full wrestling contract."
Let's be honest. Sting will probably make more money from the video game, Sting DVD, Sting t-shirt, action figures, and any other WWE projects on that "lowball" deal than he ever made in TNA. And he doesn't have to embarrass himself on a weekly basis on national TV.
Who are guys that you think WWE will bring in?
ReplyDeleteMy guess is Angle, Jeff, and the Dudleyz eventually are brought in. After that, I'm not so sure that they will bring in any talent that wasn't WWE first.
I will be calling your company immediately and noting them the same!
ReplyDeleteThose are literally the only names I can think of. Maybe... hopefully... Brooke.
ReplyDeleteYOU GOT ME THIS TIME GADGET!
ReplyDeleteIt's a little sad that some people will be out of work but I have trouble building up to much sympathy, in our current economic times with millions and millions out of work, for people who are lucky their employer some how managed to not go under for the past 7 years.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if there are fans but TNA really deserves to go under. If this was a cooperation not involved in your fanboy interest you would agree. There is no way a company can survive making as bad of decisions and waste money and continue to shoot themselves in the foot reaching for the brass ring.
I can't for the life of me understand Dixie's love of Russo. Bringing him in once..ok I can comprehend that. She figures "well..he did a lot of WWE with Vince over him....then he went to WCW and had no supervisors and things didn't work out....so If I bring him in but I'm the boss..maybe it will work:" Fine I can accept that line of thinking as far as giving it a try. What in the world did Russo ever do for the company to build that kind of loyalty from her? It's not like Russo made her millions in the late 90's and she has some puppy dog devotion. What is the deal?
:: Pets his cat with his metal gloved hand ::
ReplyDeleteOooh, good call. I think the Knockouts might have a better shot. Brooke was in WWE at one point. And if Velvet is still banging Bubba Ray there's always a shot they bring her in.
ReplyDeleteYou don't think they will off a number of these guys NXT jobs?
ReplyDeleteWill they take them or just go work in Japan or the Indys?
ReplyDeleteThey'd be stupid not to bring in Beer Money.
Welcome to the 6 K club!
ReplyDeleteYea. I would think some guys would get offers like Storm and Rhodes. Lashely interests me if there will be any interest. Not that I want to see him in WWE but just curious if Vince will want him.
ReplyDeleteThe guys that are SCREWED are Anderson and MVP
Anderson definitely. There's no way they're going to bring him back while Randall is around; Why do you think the same fate will be for MVP?
ReplyDeleteProbably not. WWE is looking to make cuts, not add talent unless it sees money in them.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the TNA guys are already in their 30s (hell, Bobby Roode and James Storm are both 37!). NXT has been generally moving in a younger direction so WWE can get more time out of them.
What about an Ares, which is who I was kind of thinking of.
ReplyDeleteIf wwe wanted him he'd be in WWE.
ReplyDeleteToo small and too big of a dick.
ReplyDeleteWould be nice to see Angle on a Jericho-type schedule. Easy for him, yet as fans we still get to see him in atleast one 3 month fued a year or something like that
ReplyDeleteHey, I'm not WWE so I couldn't tell you. But I honestly think anyone who is over 32ish (Aries is 36) who isn't a name is going to have a tough time getting a job with WWE.
ReplyDeleteThere's a big reason why WWE is looking at guys with little or no wrestling experience in their early 20s to hire for NXT. They want to work with clean slates.
fair enough. I think I started this argument before looking at the roster and going oh yea.....TNA isn't the company with a lot of high flying young talented guys anymore.
ReplyDeleteHere is the funny thing. I was over on 411 (yeah, yea, I know..) and they said TNA has all of it's foreign TV deals in place, just not one in the US. Has there ever been a company that did not show its product from its company of origin?
ReplyDeleteI really hope, for the business' sake, that this isn't The End, but I'm really intrigued to see if another network takes a shot with them. A channel like Fox Sports 1, for example, needs original programming in the worst way. Maybe they'd take a flyer on them. But I guess that's just an optimistic reach.
ReplyDeleteSo if this is the end I think I know what the talent could do... maybe they could go to New Japan Pro Wrestling... maybe they could go back to Ring Of Honor...
ReplyDeleteThat pop he would get when "Medal" hits would be fucking incredible.
ReplyDeleteThey never tried WCW. You can't air WWE Smackdown or RAW and hanging up WCW logos and pretend, that this is now a WCW show... and ECW failed, because it was just another WWE Show, just with different branding.
ReplyDeleteTNA could be different if they really keep it separate and not making a 30 minute TNA segment during RAW or so and because TNA actually WAS like WWE just with different branding. ;-)
They could air TNA Impact just as if it was TNA impact only with some guys coming and going between the TNA show and WWE shows. Maybe a little Invasion Story, but nothing else.
Just keep them alive to give the new wrestlers more room to develop and to gain more experience.
You know, it's totally possible that they bring in some of the 35+ guys, but this isn't 2001 WWE with enough money lying around that even bringing in Buff Bagwell seems like a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm just basing my thoughts on what WWE's recent hiring processes have been and trying to factor in the millions of dollars the company lost/is losing this year.
If they don't get a TV deal right away I like the idea of them doing their show on Youtube and maybe even creating a Roku channel like OVW did recently.
ReplyDeleteThat would be absolutely ridiculous, lol. And no, I can't recall that ever occurring.
ReplyDeleteThis is what I'm saying. They have networks in place for the foreign market and the US market would just watch on youtube.
ReplyDeleteBut that would definitely require MAJOR MAJOR cutbacks.
ReplyDeleteIn fact isn't OVW like their minor league promotion? I am sure they could use the same people that created their channel to create their own.
ReplyDeleteUm, didn't you just get done saying that losing tv was NOT a death blow for them?
ReplyDeleteWhy? It's not as if they couldn't advertise on youtube with banners and such.
ReplyDeleteAries has a big dick?
ReplyDeleteRandy Orton or not, WWE sees nothing in Kennedy. He's one of the few guys that they didn't keep around even to job out -- WWE just cut him loose, get the hell out of here. That's after giving him the MITB briefcase and putting him in one of their shitty movies.
ReplyDeleteWWE isn't going to bring a 38 year-old never was after he blew his chances 10 years ago.
Isn't much of their income from their TV deal?
ReplyDeleteNot sure.
ReplyDeleteMost of their income comes directly via Spike. Without that, they can't even cover arena costs for a TV taping.
ReplyDelete:: Pats you both on the head ::
ReplyDeleteI'd bring the Duddleys back in some way (probably not full time but get them back under the banner....sigh...I guess Jeff... There is a lot of talk about Angle around here and a serious split in option on if Angle is worth the potential media disaster of a gold medalist dying on your watch that I'll leave for others to argue over.
ReplyDeleteBeyond them I'd bring in Joe, Davey Richards, the wolves and maybe see if Beer Inc could beef up the tag divison. People who actually watch TNA help me out would Magnus be worth a try? Beyond that I'd see if Tazz was willing to do NXT or work for the network
Maybe that is why cancelled. As long as they stayed in the Impact Zone costs were probably manageable.
ReplyDeletehahahahahahah. I'm going to edit that to make it PG.
ReplyDeleteIt is funny how TNA's foreign ratings are so much stronger than in the US.
ReplyDeleteManageable, but they were still losing money even doing shows there. It's just a bad situation all the way around. They're going to have to find a network who's not only willing to air their show, but to financially back it as well. That will not be easy.
ReplyDeletebut ya see the thing about that is....money.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that is why Hemme took issue.
ReplyDeleteI know there are web shows that make some coin these days this way but there is no way that makes what Spike does or else everyone would be doing it. Keep in mind that even if they could make the same money on youtube as they did on spike...they were still losing money.
ReplyDeleteTrue. It's a similar situation to WCW. They weren't financially solvent enough to survive on their own.
ReplyDeleteYep. No way they weren't going to lose money.
ReplyDeleteA web show would just not work. That was my first thought, too, but itt barely worked for them in 2004 when they lost the FSN deal and they weren't in as bad shape financially as they are now.
ReplyDeleteMVP left on good terms and he didn't badmouth the company.
ReplyDeleteAnd to be honest, with the new stable of evil Negro wrestlers he'd be a good mouthpiece.
Oh absolutely. He'd be a home run.
ReplyDeleteLT Falk will come sulking back to SSW, but they should lowball him and give him a Legends Contract. He's undeniably tainted by the stink of TNA.
ReplyDeleteSo the question is, is that it? Is Vince all that is and all that ever will be on US tv? or does this open the door for someone like ROH? With all the NBC sports, Foxs sports 1 and fox sports 2 and all of those channels Plus Spike it seems like someone would want to try wrestling at some point. I don't watch ROH, haven't for years and years but I would think a company that (unlike TNA) has proven themselves to be self sustained and competent on a smallish scale for over a decade would be enticing.
ReplyDeleteI see what you did there, and you sir are SKINNY FAT!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone offered any concrete proof of that or is this just the party line parroted by TNA fans? I know the UK tapings did really well attendance-wise, TNA has a Bootcamp show exclusively in the UK, and Ring Ka King was obviously a thing for a while. But I've never seen anything that indicated that TNA did really well ratings-wise overseas except for its UK success.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually just really curious about this because I hear "TNA is HUGE overseas!" all the time, but I really haven't seen much evidence of that outside of the UK.
the pop we hear when he snaps his neck in his 2nd match will not be as incredible.
ReplyDeleteI see what you did there, and you sir are SKINNY FAT!!!!
ReplyDeleteWCW1987 hasn't posted in a while. I hope that he's okay.
ReplyDeleteHe's as dead as TNA.
ReplyDeleteI don't really know why he'd be that upset. It's just a wrestling company. It's not like his Grandma died.
ReplyDeleteHis grandma made her way by blowing a lot of the TNA talent. Jeff Hardy, Willow... I could name 'em all.
ReplyDeleteYou said this: "ECW failed, because it was just another WWE Show, just with different branding" and then later added: "TNA actually WAS like WWE just with different branding."
ReplyDeleteSo, TNA would succeed as WWE-lite when ECW failed because it was WWE-lite? That's doesn't make sense. Furthermore, TNA has far less name value than WCW or ECW ever had, so it's not like too many people have an emotional connection to the product to the degree that WWE can exploit that fanbase.
"Just keep them alive to give the new wrestlers more room to develop and to gain more experience."
Again, that's what NXT is for, and by all accounts NXT is doing a great job of it.
The only sustainable, profitable company of the last 30 years has been owned by Vince McMahon. If you don't have Vince's company on your channel, you are taking a risk. This is what we have learned. If you want to take a risk, good for you. If you don't, no one would blame you.
ReplyDeleteThe argument I used to hear is TNA did better ratings wise than the WWE in Europe because they were on a free network while the WWE was on a network that had to be paid for.
ReplyDelete"I will be out for a few weeks on a well-deserved summer holiday. Scott
ReplyDeleteKeith will be filling in during my absence, assuming he's man enough to
do so."
It sounds like you've run this by Scott through official channels and he's eager to fill in, no doubt. The cheap charm of SS f'n W will most certainly rub off on him like a stripper's glitter and perfume.
Hopefully, the avant garde action of the undisputed #2 promotion doesn't overwhelm Scott. He may need a holiday by the time you return.
Most overrated wrestler in the past 20 years in my opinion (barely edging out Jarrett).
ReplyDeleteYeah, pretty much most non-wrestling fans already thinks wrestling = WWE. With each company that fails that perception gets increasingly stronger.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Bryan foiling that robbery is all over the TV news. I saw D Bry on the big screen at the airport. WWE would be nuts not to hop on it on Raw tonight. It's a story that makes their wrestlers look legit tough.
ReplyDeleteHe's TNA's number 1 fan here.
ReplyDeleteDon't ruin the moment I created.
ReplyDeleteI've heard that too, but I've yet to see the numbers to back that up.
ReplyDeleteI think WCW1987 was here a few days ago saying that TNA was MORE popular than WWE was in England, but looking at the live attendance figures shows that while TNA does get GREAT attendance numbers in the UK, it's still less than half WWE's.
1. It makes sense, because ECW was a Hardcore company while the WWE version was just a WWE lite version. TNA was never hardcore anything (besides Hardcore Justice) and always WWE lite, so it wouldn't make a difference.
ReplyDelete2. But NXT has that "development show" stigmata and will never be seen as a "different" "company/brand", while TNA is/was a different company/brand.
"He's TNA's one fan".
ReplyDeleteFixed that for you.
I don't think anything will compete with WWE numbers. TNA should have never tried to do so to begin with.
ReplyDeleteHow can Dixie justify bringing back Russo?
ReplyDeleteAgreed. All Kennedy brought to the table was a cool entrance and a catchphrase. And that catchphrase was just him saying his name twice.
ReplyDeleteShe's an idiot?
ReplyDeleteYou spelled cunt wrong.
ReplyDeleteWell, two of TNA's biggest mistakes were 1) Switching Impact to Monday nights and 2) Taking Impact on the road, both of which were attempts to "compete" with WWE.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, you're 100% right.
....You know what? I'd take Kennedy over Orton. Why the hell not? He had his own microphone and everything.
ReplyDeleteSo with TNA folding in a few months, SSW is #2 now?
ReplyDeleteI wonder that myself. This will be two companies that Russo's ineptitude helped to put six feet under, if TNA does indeed fold. It seems more and more likely that, during his tenure in the WWF(E), he was helped not only by Vince's stern, omnipresent hand on the back of his neck, but by the sheer capabilities and talent of the wrestlers he was writing for. I mean, of COURSE guys like Rock, Foley, Austin, and DX are going to make shit into sunshine sundaes...they have the inherent knowledge (and the leeway, in most of those cases) to call audibles and change shit that Russo wrote that simply didn't work or was massively stupid. Put him in TNA, unchecked and with a roster of lesser talent, and all of a sudden, the emperor has no clothes. Fucker got exposed for what he truly was all along: a bad to mediocre writer who had MASSIVELY talented people to write for, and a boss who would shitcan his terrible ideas (most of the time, anyway).
ReplyDeletethat cost cutting measure might interest Vince
ReplyDelete"He's TNA's only fan"
ReplyDeleteFTFY
Velvet Sky is his grandma?
ReplyDeleteNot so sure about Jeff...a known drug user and "problem talent" isn't going to have a gilded invitation extended to him. But Angle I could see (putting him into Swagger's corner as a mentor after say, Rusev takes out Dutch would be FANTASTIC), and I think you're right on the money about the Dudleyz. I can't figure out why they wouldn't bring in Shark Boy....I mean, the mask is merchandise GOLD, and he can easily fill the plucky underdog role that Mysterio left behind. Hell, he could fill the comedy role that Santino is leaving behind as well. And he's not likely to cost much at ALL.
ReplyDeleteNow my post looks stupid. YOU ARE PURE EVIL!!!
ReplyDeleteWhich was 100% ripped off from a boxing announcer who had done it for the previous 30 years.
ReplyDeleteHeh. He could be a sort of Kareem Said type character for the stable. Super smart, shit-stirring leader of a potentially explosive faction of guys? I think MVP could nail that.
ReplyDelete"Well, two of TNA's biggest mistakes were 1) Listening to Hogan and 2) Dealing with Russo.
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, you're 100% right."
FTFY
He doesn't have to...but he seems to WANT to, which is odd.
ReplyDeleteThey are both fairly common names, so it could be worse.
ReplyDeleteI still like to bug them though.
As I said last night, things could go from bad to worse for the wrestling industry as a whole on Thursday based on those Network numbers. I don't think they'll be awful, but they won't be over 1 million. IF the Network subscriber number happens to fall, though, watch out!
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, there are plenty of examples of creative types who have a few years/works of genius and then go downhill. The music industry is littered by one-hit wonders. Harper Lee never published another novel after To Kill a Mockingbird because she didn't think she could write anything of that quality ever again. 30 years ago Eddie Murphy was the funniest man on the planet and he hasn't made a good movie in 20 years. The point is, a spark of creativity doesn't always mean the person who created it has a lifetime of talent to tap into.
ReplyDeleteSo let's say Russo was the super-genius that wrote all the great WWE TV from 1997-1999 (and there is plenty of evidence that he wasn't the only voice on the writing team) in which the writing was about 70% awesome and 30% crap. In the 15+ years since then he's had about a 95% "crap" rating, if not higher.
At what point was Dixie going to write the guy off and realize whatever ideas he had were long gone?
Austin Aries and Davey Richards are both totally screwed. Both burned their bridges with ROH, Davey screwed over a Japanese company (and good luck getting the Japanese to trust you ever again), and both of them screwed up shots with the WWE. I guess their only hope is GFW? I dunno...but EVOLVE alone isn't going to pay the bills.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't think it's fair to lay this one at Russo's feet. He certainly didn't help anything, but Dixie is the idiot who thought she could hire him again and lie to everyone about it. Whenever you feel the need to lie about employing someone, you've made a bad decision. On the other hand, John Garubick ( or however you spell it) wasn't going to get the job done, either.
Starting to look like dark days for the business. I hope SOMETHING rises up organically from the ashes as an alternative to the E though. But I have feeling everything - including the WWE's product - is gonna get worse before it gets better.
ReplyDeleteJust turned on the WWE Network live stream to see Razor Ramon and British Bulldog listed as facing each other at the 1995 KOTR PPV. That didn't happen...
ReplyDeleteDavey and Austin could go to Wrestle-1, I think Aries can return to ROH, Davey is fucked, but who did he pissed off in Japan?
ReplyDeleteIn this age where if the guy is too over they cut everything good of him (Cesaro), It's gonna be tough.
ReplyDeleteThat would have been a main event in any arena (Sadly, in 1995, it probably would have. )
ReplyDeleteWell, there was that Vegas-based promotion with health insurance and pension plans that Shane Douglas was talking about starting earlier this year. But since it's Shane Douglas, don't count on it.
ReplyDeleteBecause TNA?
ReplyDeleteSummerslam is shaping up to be a pretty badass card.
ReplyDeleteTNA.
ReplyDeleteI may be laughing off TNA now but they delivered some good stuff over the years. Who remembers the X-division in 2005, the rise of Samoa Joe, AMW v XXX, Abyss before shitty angles.
ReplyDeleteSouthern States is one or two more sexy divas away from a minimum 90 minute Spike show. Meltzer was asked about this and replied "I dunno! It sure seems like it, though. I haven't head anything confirmed but it sure looks that way."
ReplyDeleteI'd mark out for sure
ReplyDelete1. The TNA news still bums me out. I just hate seeing wrestling promotions go out of business, even ones that stink. It's a place to draw a paycheck.
ReplyDelete2. Fatal four-ways and triple threat matches need to suffer the same fate of TNA. I hate them. Hate hate hate them. ECW did three way dance matches correctly.
3. Bayless, get on those Daniels and Kazarian interviews, my man!
I just think that the organic possibilities are getting pretty low.
ReplyDeleteThe "wrestling" business is all but dead, replaced with the "WWE entertainment" business. The number of people with any relevant experience in wrestling, who are not already proven failures through TNA, is pretty slim.
1. So why would WWE want to present WWE-lite? What possible benefit could WWE get from propping up a failed promotion as a different brand instead of just getting another TV deal for The Main Event or Saturday Morning Slam instead? As I keep pointing out, it didn't work twice in the past with two brands that were much more famous. WWE did the different "brands" thing for years and it ran its course. TNA has hardly any name value to exploit.
ReplyDelete2. The whole point of NXT is that it's a development show, hence the stigma.
"Jeff Hardy could still be huge in WWE, especially with Punk gone and Bryan out indefinitely. Matt Hardy, I doubt it."
ReplyDeleteMatt's gut could be pretty huge though.
This could be a good thing for Jeff Jarrett's promotion if they could get a TV deal but is there anyone that is going to give them a deal?
ReplyDeleteI cringed reading about the Fatal Four-way for the tag titles. The Usos are having a great reign and I fear it will end cheaply to someone who will have a forgettable run. That sucked when Miz & Morrison were tag champs for about 8 months and extremely entertaining and over, only to lose the belts to Hawkins & Ryder in a worthless fatal four-way where the other two teams were Jesse & Festus and Finlay & Hornswoggle.
ReplyDeleteThe only catch is you hafta ring up customers Monday-Friday, maybe stock shelves on Sunday evenings. Everyone's ring attire must be only red with a dash of white.
ReplyDeleteSpruce this up a bit and save it as an official The Fall of TNA Rant, to go along with the others (For Want of a Nail, The Fall of the AWA, King Lear, etc.)
ReplyDeleteYep, not a fan of title reigns ending in multi man matches. (Which is one of the main reasons why I had zero problems with having Goldberg wait a month and beating HHH 1 on 1 back in 2003.) And, here's the can opener, and here's the can of worms!!!
ReplyDeleteI went to KOTR 95! Instead of Razor/Bulldog (why would they show that graphic? Their shit was taped weeks in advance) I was treated to Yoko/Savio (and a Savio IRS appetizer). Savio as the "modern day Rocky Balboa" in Philly was not the hero we needed.
ReplyDeletemaybe TNA can start a kick starter to keep themselves alive.
ReplyDeleteBoy, you love that subject.
ReplyDeleteI love Triple H, and even I'm annoyed by your constant defending of that feud.
Such a weird show. They were selling how huge of an upset the semi finals was, when Savio beat a guy who was essentially a manager. I don't care if Savio had wrestled 9 matches that night, he was still the overwhelming favorite to beat the Roadie!
ReplyDeleteGoldberg and HHH were both dreadful wrestlers in 2003 so neither can really be defended.
ReplyDeleteThis, and the main even of WM 22 are 2 things I will defend for the rest of my existance. DEAL WITH IT. :)
ReplyDeleteTNA isn't going out of business. They cut the payroll big-time over the past year for this moment, specifically... finding a new TV deal (even for just a year) that can sustain their original TV business model (taping 4 shows in advance, lesser major name deals). I think they'll be okay.
ReplyDeleteI hate Triple Threat matches, too. They should only be used to mask guys who can't wrestle (Roman Reigns) but are over and do kewl spots.
ReplyDeleteWell since everyone and their distant cousin know your thoughts on it, the least you could do is stop mentioning it when it's not even the goddamn subject.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but to be fair, Eddie Murphy is part of the Shrek franchise which has grossed hundreds of millions.
ReplyDeleteAs for Russo, even when he was the "genius" behind the Attitude Era, the vast majority of his efforts were the equivalent of monkeys flinging poo against the wall and seeing what sticks, and very little of it holds up today. As pointed out previously, he had the fortune of having massively talented performers to get his ideas over, something he doesn't have in TNA.
This is making you incredibly angry.
ReplyDeleteEh, in that Grantland interview he specifically says he wants "One more match. That’s what I’m hoping to do, and I’d like it to be Taker, and then I’ll hang it up." He didn't come off as a guy who wanted a last run.
ReplyDeleteI say if Taker's up for it throw him and Sting in a ring at Mania 31 for 15 minutes now that the Streak is over, and the two can do all their old spots and then both call it a day. Why not? We've seen bigger trainwrecks at Mania and I'd like to see Sting wrestle one match in WWE -- and it might as well be in California at WrestleMania.
Excited for SummerSlam, should be a great show.
ReplyDeleteGoldberg has always been terrible. His look is all that's good about him, so I'm not arguing against the story from 2003. I'm just saying I'm sick of hearing about how it was the right move. Who gives a fuck, honestly?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's just.....who gives a fuck, really?
ReplyDeleteWell I was using it as an example of the original poster saying that it sucks when a long title reign ends in a multi man match....
ReplyDeleteIt's not like someone said "Montreal was a work", and I replied with "LULZ HHH WON". Maybe you need a 2nd cup of coffee to relax.
Can you bring up another mult-man match, or is that always on your mind? To me, it seems like you have a hard-on for it.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind fatal four-ways, so long as they're elimation matches. You get prolonged storytelling and the champs HAVE to get beat.
ReplyDeleteSomebody really should start a gimmick account that enters deathfeud and answers with " lOLz HHH Won."
ReplyDeleteI think I'll drop it for now, mostly because i'm worried about your mental well being at the moment.
ReplyDeleteIf they HAVE to have fat slug Mabel go over, I feel like 1-2-3 Kid should have been the underdog that year to get to the finals. Kid over Razor 1st Round (friend) and Jarrett 2nd Round (arch-enemy) and then falling to Mabel in the finals. None of those guys were even in it due to injuries etc.
ReplyDelete"I've half a mind to ask Beau how much he wants for 30 seconds of air time, and create a Blog of Doom commercial for his show."
ReplyDeletePLEASE
"Yeah, but did anyone NOTICE him in the airport?" -Kevin Nash
ReplyDeletewoooo! Half a mention! I'll take it! *only refreshes a calm 37 times*
ReplyDeleteI'm keen for a SSW vs ROH invasion program
ReplyDeleteI imagine someone as distinctive looking as Bryan gets mobbed in public.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I just want to say again - these reviews are absolutely fantastic. I'm glad you are doing them.
ReplyDeleteAnd because he goes on holiday some wrestler dies. It's cycle of life as old as time, beautiful in a way.
ReplyDelete
