I was looking for he Batista-John Cena match from SummerSlam '08, but could not find a good quality vid. So we'll run with this one instead. No complaints from this side. It's a solid ****+ Hell in a Cell match.
This has been a thing the past few days now. It's for the posters who are watching the marathon on FXX. It was requested, and will be a thing until it's evident no one is using it.
It also makes the "obstructed view" regular matches that have at HIAC every year look even more like shit. It proved that Cell matches don't necessarily need blood to be sort intense.
I was there live and the whole thing was just too predictable. Like no shit HHH is gonna come in, save the day, boom, the end. I also hated new DX and just could not get into it.
Agreed. That was one I actually saw for the first time a couple weekends ago, when I was trying to watch as many Summerslam matches I'd never seen before as possible (wasn't it you I was talking about this with? You were rightly making fun of me for never having seen Bret/Perfect, right?) and I couldn't believe what I was watching at the end. I remember Scott saying something in his rant about this silliness, and he actually way undersold just how inane that shit was. Great match, though.
I love their WM match, but none of the other Taker-Edge matches do all that much for me. It's not that they're bad, just in the case of this match, and the TLC at ONS, overbooked and ultimately just silly.
Edge mentions this on, um....god there's so many podcasts now maybe Jericho...that they told him and Taker like only two days before the show that they couldn't get any color.
That seems pretty nuts to only have 48 hours to develop a match that doesn't include one of the main features of the stipulation.
Seconded. I'll always prefer Christian for whatever reason (I guess I think he's more well-rounded, I dunno) but I was amazed even a month after Edge retired what a gaping hole he'd be leaving in the main event scene.
This is the match where 'Taker chokeslammed Edge through the ring "to Hell" with the fire and all, right?
Yeah, that pissed me off. I loved this match until that crap. It's like having the best steak of your life, and then when the desert comes the waiter unexpectedly pees on your ice cream.
I don't invest into wrestlers without some sort of peril. It's the same reason I never liked the Streak gimmick. I will give the Edge - UT WrestleMania build some credit in that Edge saw through the surrealistic, gimmicky bullshit and wasn't afraid. It was at least new.
Well this was an assbeating a year in the making. Edge first cashed in MITB and stole Taker's title in May of 2007 so this was a long time coming. It needed to be an epic ass kicking.
I loved the booking of the match with Undertaker using everything Edge had done to him over the previous year against him. The Spear he used to steal the title, the camera a returning Edge used to cost Taker the title at SS, the conchairto, tables, ladders, and chairs, before finally putting him away with the Undertaker specialty. Good old fashioned tombstone.
Ah, I understand now. I'm the same way. Most of my favorite faces were always underdogs. Undertaker was actually the only exception for me because he didn't hog up the main event scene all the time.
The death of Maude is the tipping point, yeah? I was never a regular watcher back in the day, but everyone I've talked to says that the episode is the beginning of the downward spiral of the show quality.
that's from the beloved Jericho/Heyman/Edge ep of Jericho's podcast. Edge also shares that he wanted to be tombstoned on the roof of the cell, but Taker wasn't into it.
Great in-match storytelling. They recite the whole feud back to you with the moves they use in-match. Even Edge calling back to what he learned from beating Foley off WWE tv
my only gripe with this match is that they already some of those callbacks at WrestleMania as well. that obviously made that match more interesting, but it lessened the impact of the similar stuff being used at SummerSlam.
that's not meant as insult or anything like that. I am just surprised that there are obviously people on this blog that haven't seen every SummerSlam show.
This was the first season that I really didn't make much effort to see. From here on out I've missed more eps than I've seen. Some of the later years I've probably seen zero.
I think it was Taker post 2004 that really annoyed me. The writers seemed to forget what made the Deadman Taker interesting, and basically went back to making him this invincible monster who never talked (which he WAS in the early 1990s). If they had just brought back the 1997 - 1998 Undertaker, I would have been more happy, but all the stupid parlor tricks really got boring after a while.
Oh, and Taker no selling five Frog Splashes from Eddie Guerrero REALLY pissed me off.
The thing I liked about Edge was how he was such a old-school weasel. It didn't hurt his credibility, either, because he was always so shameless about it and came up with all sorts of creative and humorous ways to sneak away with victories.
Shameless--that's it. That's why Edge and Jericho can lose a lot of matches but not lose heat, b/c they weren't beat down bad enough--had to see it happen again!
UT vs HBK in the original Cell match was an extended squash almost on the level of Brock/Cena, difference being....nobody got their ass kicked better than Shawn
This season it kinda goes from great episodes to some great jokes in mediocre episodes. This was also the season where they really start to go overboard with cramming in celebrity guests in and not worrying about actually being funny or telling a good story. This season makes me sad.
Stuck in a hospital bed on the eve of my birthday watching the marathon. I'm on Simpsons Bible Stories now. I have all the episodes I care to keep on DVR at home or getting ready to record.
And?
ReplyDeleteThe post-match stuff basically ruins the match altogether. So stupid.
ReplyDeleteLast great non-WM HIAC?
ReplyDeleteWow, has anyone been MORE beat than Edge was that night? Talk about overkill.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff, though.
Is Taker/Edge the only match to headline both Wrestlemania and Summerslam?
ReplyDeleteCena vs Batista did to, albeit in different years.
ReplyDeleteThis has been a thing the past few days now. It's for the posters who are watching the marathon on FXX. It was requested, and will be a thing until it's evident no one is using it.
ReplyDeleteI think this was around the time I quit watching. O remember almost none of these episodes.
ReplyDeleteHomer to the max is the best one of this group, I believe. We are definitely at the point that I cam barely tell the plot my the title
ReplyDeleteI think this was the first non-blood HIAC as well.
ReplyDeleteMain event yeah.
ReplyDeleteBrock and Angle had a return match at Summerslam after 19.
Hogan and Savage were on opposite sides of a tag main event at Summerslam 89.
But for main events yeah this is the only pair to close both a wrestlemania and Summerslam against one another.
DX VS legacy was pretty good
ReplyDeleteIt also makes the "obstructed view" regular matches that have at HIAC every year look even more like shit. It proved that Cell matches don't necessarily need blood to be sort intense.
ReplyDeleteSeth and Dean should absolutely get the HiaC slot this year.
ReplyDeleteI wish the Undertaker weren't always booked to be Jesus all the time.
ReplyDeleteI hate that match
ReplyDeleteYeah? How come? Can only recall watching it once. Only one that came to mind
ReplyDeleteWhen You Dish Upon a Star bring us the first appearance of animated Ron Howard.
ReplyDeleteWhy? It's what made him stand out.
ReplyDeleteNope. It's gonna be KENNEL FROM HELL 2: THE BARKENING.
ReplyDeleteI was there live and the whole thing was just too predictable. Like no shit HHH is gonna come in, save the day, boom, the end. I also hated new DX and just could not get into it.
ReplyDeleteJEEEEEEEZUS
ReplyDeleteCena/Batista didn't headline either a Mania or a Summerslam.
ReplyDeleteYeah didn't see the other nine. Thought you were just looking for attention or something. Sorry n shit
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
ReplyDeleteGreat match, though.
If Undertaker was Jesus, wouldn't he be a more benevolent guy who would put dudes over?
ReplyDeleteEdge is definitely one of those guys that I didn't realize I liked so much until he was gone.
ReplyDeleteI love their WM match, but none of the other Taker-Edge matches do all that much for me. It's not that they're bad, just in the case of this match, and the TLC at ONS, overbooked and ultimately just silly.
ReplyDeleteEdge mentions this on, um....god there's so many podcasts now maybe Jericho...that they told him and Taker like only two days before the show that they couldn't get any color.
ReplyDeleteThat seems pretty nuts to only have 48 hours to develop a match that doesn't include one of the main features of the stipulation.
What season was "Behind the Laughter?" If I had to guess, I'd say that's when people will drop out.
ReplyDeleteSeconded. I'll always prefer Christian for whatever reason (I guess I think he's more well-rounded, I dunno) but I was amazed even a month after Edge retired what a gaping hole he'd be leaving in the main event scene.
ReplyDeleteAAAAUUUGGGHHH!!! OOOHHH MYYYY.... YOU'RE GONNA REST IN PEACE. YOU'RE GONNA REST IN PEACE.
ReplyDeleteFeaturing the reanimated corpse of Ray Traylor!
ReplyDeleteNow I see that he meant closed out the show. I thought he just meant a match advertised as one of the main attractions.
ReplyDeleteThis is the match where 'Taker chokeslammed Edge through the ring "to Hell" with the fire and all, right?
ReplyDeleteYeah, that pissed me off. I loved this match until that crap. It's like having the best steak of your life, and then when the desert comes the waiter unexpectedly pees on your ice cream.
They were too PG lite.
ReplyDeleteWell, it at least made Edge's return in November all the more shocking.
ReplyDeleteLast episode of season 11.
ReplyDeleteYeah, perfect for Dean's return.
ReplyDeleteThe goofy post-match nonsense ruins it for me, sadly.
ReplyDeleteWith a beard, and zero burn marks.
ReplyDelete"Every dog has his day... TODAY IS NOT THAT DAY".
ReplyDeleteI don't invest into wrestlers without some sort of peril. It's the same reason I never liked the Streak gimmick. I will give the Edge - UT WrestleMania build some credit in that Edge saw through the surrealistic, gimmicky bullshit and wasn't afraid. It was at least new.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.hysteria-lives.co.uk/the_burning/images/burningcropsy.jpg
ReplyDeleteI was hoping he would come back looking like this.
In the same year I think so; Bret and Shawn have mained both
ReplyDeleteWell you must hate Brock Lesnar right now then.
ReplyDeleteEdge is probably my favorite guy outside of the all-purpose wrestling god tier that is HBK/Flair/Savage.
ReplyDeleteOff topic, but did Bobby Heenan play Helen Hart in Reo's Roundup when Reo Rodgers and Shawn Michaels visited the Hart Family Home.
ReplyDeleteThat was unclear on my part. I don't like faces who don't show any vulnerability. A vicious, unstoppable killer is a great heel.
ReplyDeleteWell this was an assbeating a year in the making. Edge first cashed in MITB and stole Taker's title in May of 2007 so this was a long time coming. It needed to be an epic ass kicking.

ReplyDeleteHe just "got it" on every level. Everything he did--every match, promo, mannerism, etc--he WAS The Rated R Superstar Edge.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I can see that we're dropping this thread. Just threadjack if you have a comment to make.
ReplyDeletethat's from the beloved Jericho/Heyman/Edge ep of Jericho's podcast. Edge also shares that he wanted to be tombstoned on the roof of the cell, but Taker wasn't into it.
ReplyDeleteIt's also Monday of a new week. I'm leaving Simpsons on when nothing else is on.
ReplyDeleteThis Lisa cheated episode is okay.
Great in-match storytelling. They recite the whole feud back to you with the moves they use in-match. Even Edge calling back to what he learned from beating Foley off WWE tv
ReplyDeleteGil! Trying to see Colecos! lol
ReplyDeleteNew DX was everything wrong with Cena x2!
ReplyDeletemy only gripe with this match is that they already some of those callbacks at WrestleMania as well. that obviously made that match more interesting, but it lessened the impact of the similar stuff being used at SummerSlam.

ReplyDeleteu another one of those smug "i cut the cord months ago guys?"
ReplyDeleteSeason 10 is when it goes to shit. I did enjoy the POOCHIE cameo in "The Terror of Tiny Toon" in the Halloween ep.
ReplyDeleteFIRST. heh.
ReplyDeleteI can NOT wait for the Hall of Fame Forum! I hope it takes a long time.
ReplyDelete:: clearing throat ::
ReplyDeleteFuck that "forum." I don't really need Hogan, ever, Flair should just be in rehab somewhere, and I'm sure HBK would rather be hunting.
Sorry, folks -- everyone to the Princess thread!
ReplyDeleteaw, MAN. And i was first here! BOOOOO!!!!!
ReplyDelete:: shakes you upsidedown for food and wallet ::

ReplyDeleteKeep it clean!
ReplyDeleteI'm torn between two threads. I don't ---
ReplyDeleteFuck it, the other one.
Where is everyone?
ReplyDeleteUT vs HBK in the original Cell match was an extended squash almost on the level of Brock/Cena, difference being....nobody got their ass kicked better than Shawn
ReplyDeleteWhaaaaatttt is that from?? Always heard it and wondered.
ReplyDeleteNo. He's just a fucking waste of bytes.
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm one of those ignore most of the shittiness on this blog type of guys. Didn't notice the prior posts like I said.
ReplyDeleteOh that's cute. Fedora Freddie mocking me. Go back to your ponies dear, he wasn't asking for your opinion.
ReplyDeleteThis is so bad
ReplyDeleteHello, hello, hello. Is there anybody out there, there, there?
ReplyDeleteThis season it kinda goes from great episodes to some great jokes in mediocre episodes. This was also the season where they really start to go overboard with cramming in celebrity guests in and not worrying about actually being funny or telling a good story. This season makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteMarge looks better with her hair down.
ReplyDeleteStuck in a hospital bed on the eve of my birthday watching the marathon. I'm on Simpsons Bible Stories now. I have all the episodes I care to keep on DVR at home or getting ready to record.
ReplyDeleteAlex (Lisa Kudrow's guest voice): "Your name's Lisa? Shut up, I love that name!"
ReplyDeleteSad confession, I just now got that joke after all these years.
"In your freckled face Howard!"
ReplyDeleteLou: "Chief he splashed me."
ReplyDeleteWiggum: "Look no one likes a crybaby, now you splash him back."
I agree with the Simpsons Commentary that Wiggum should get his own show.
Like I said before, Wiggum quickly grew to one of my favorite characters.
ReplyDeleteTHREAD FAIL.
ReplyDelete:)
I paraphrase this quote from Homer EVERY TIME someone gives me Bart's setup line.
ReplyDelete"Bart: This isn't bad.
Homer: Isn't bad? Tell me one thing mankind's ever done that's any better?
Lisa: The Renaissance?
Homer: This is better."
This isn't QUITE the jumping-off point for the Simpsons, since most of these are still really good episodes. Wait just one more season...
ReplyDelete"And there's that awful script from The Cable Guy"
ReplyDeleteFuck you Simpsons! Fuck you!
