WWF Superstars of Wrestling October 4th,1986

October 4, 1986

Your hosts are Bruno Sammartino, Jesse Ventura, and Vince McMahon

Hulk Hogan will be here tonight as he gets interviewed by Jesse Ventura. In action tonight will be Paul Orndorff, Honkytonk Man, Koko B. Ware, and Randy Savage. Plus, an update on Roddy Piper and our featured bout, the Killer Bees vs. The Moondogs.

Randy Barber vs. Koko B. Ware

Vince is in his glory when Koko and Frankie come out. Koko is shown in an insert promo with Frankie as Jesse tells us that the "B" in his name stands for Buckwheat. Koko starts with an armdrag then a flying headscissors. Barber drops down for a monkey flip but Koko crouches over him and flaps his arms. Koko catches him with a powerslam then shortly after that finishes him off with the Ghostbuster (2:17).

Thoughts: Koko is getting over with the crowds, which is a good sign. Unfortunately for him, its a gimmick with a low ceiling.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week's topic is Hillbilly Jim and how he as endeared himself to fans all over the world as they show a clip of him singing and playing the guitar from "Tuesday Night Titans." The clips were older as Vince and Hayes stopped being the hosts about a year after this aired. I guess this is another attempt at a Hillbilly Jim push.

Mario Mancini vs. Sika w/ The Wizard

We are treated to another screaming insert promo from the Wizard before the match. Sika snapmares Manicni then chokes him out on the mat. He now gauges his face before tossing him to the floor. Sika rams Mancini against the guardrail as Jesse imagines how much damage a team consisting of Kamala & Sika could cause. Sika dominates Mancini inside of the ring until he gets the win with a Samoan Drop (1:40).

Thoughts: Nothing new here but Jesse did some foreshadowing on commentary by bringing up Kamala & Sika as a possible tag team.

Ken Resnick is with Tito Santana who will be facing Harley Race in Boston. Tito stumbled over his words a bit here and cut a rather uninspired promo overall. Tito was stuck in the midcard with no direction at this point.

Ron Shaw vs. Honkytonk Man

Vince actually calls him Wayne Ferris a few times as Jesse calls him a greaseball. We get an insert promo from Mr. Fuji who does not want Honky to put his "greasy hands on his tuxedo." Honky works the arm then rams Shaw's head off of the turnbuckle. Shaw ducks outside then Honky elbows him off of the apron. Back inside, Shaw catches Honky with a knee smash then hammers away. Shaw then misses an elbow smash as Honky slams him then hits a fist drop off of the top rope (2:56). The fans boo after the match.

Thoughts: Its been clear that Honky as a babyface is not working. No one wants to cheer for the guy. Interesting to see Honky work as a face though. The fist drop from the top is a lame finisher though.

Resnick is with Randy Savage, who will be facing George Steele in a No-DQ match in Boston. Savage quotes Rod Stewart then goes off on a tangent about the match, which is nothing new from him.

Dan Hastings vs. "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff w/ Bobby Heenan

Before the match, Orndorff is shown in an insert promo yelling about how "Real American" was a song meant for him, not Hulk Hogan. Orndorff starts the match cleanly then destroys him. He roughs him up outside of the ring then takes him back inside and rips his head off with a clothesline before getting the win with the piledriver (3:26).

Thoughts: Orndorff squash matches were fun. He looked like he worked stiff but I never heard anyone complain that he hurt them in the ring.

We are shown a promo from Roddy Piper last week after he was destroyed by Adonis, Orton, and Muraco. He comes out limping on a crutch with his leg bandaged up and holding a bat in his other hand as he destroys the Flower Shop set as the fans go crazy. Good segment to further promote their feud.

Dan McGuire vs. Randy "Macho Man" Savage w/ Elizabeth

Before the match, Savage runs outside and orders Elizabeth where to stand as we get an insert promo from Superstar Billy Graham calling out Savage, who tosses McGuire to the floor then roughs him up before bringing him back in and getting the win with the flying elbow smash (1:51).

Thoughts: Savage needs to get himself a feud for the IC title as he is getting called out by all of the wash-ups in the company.

We are now shown Ventura interviewing Hulk Hogan. They insult each other before Hogan calls out Orndorff for not being a real American. Not that much happened.

The Moondogs vs. Killer Bees

Jesse says that Hogan is jealous of him as he is filming movies and does not have to wrestle anymore. Blair gets the best of Rex to start. He slams both Moondogs then Rex tags out. Brunzell tags and works the arm for a bit. He gets two with a small package. Rex knees Brunzell from the apron and tags himself into the match but gets dropkicked and Blair tags but the referee did not see the tag and orders him back to the apron then Brunzell tags again as the ref saw it this time. Blair cleans house as Vince says that the Moondogs look off tonight. Blair hits the Bee Sting then moves out of the way as Rex accidentally elbows Spot then Brunzell dropkicks Rex ans Blair covers Spot for the win (2:57). After the match, Spot argues with Rex and shoves him as the almost come to blows.

Thoughts: The Moondogs were basically TV jobbers anyway at this point so them losing was not a surprise and I don't get the point of them teasing tension since they were most likely not going to get pushes as solo wrestlers.

Resnick is with Super & Big Machine as they talk up Piper Machine and how the "Machine Factory" is turning out even more Machines. The Machine gimmick would be finished by the end of the month as it bombed.

Next week in action are Don Muraco & Bob Orton, Junkyard Dog & George Steele, Jake Roberts, and the British Bulldogs vs. The Dream Team in a non-title match.

Final Thoughts: The Piper segment was cool and watching Honky die as a babyface was interesting but other than that this show was entirely skippable. They need to build up more feuds in the midcard as there really isn't any at this point.

Comments

  1. The fist drop from the top was one of the signature moves of HTM's cousin. ..Jerry Lawler,

    ReplyDelete
  2. IIRC the Piper flower shop segment was one of the favorite segments of a young Scott Keith.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Honky should've been a Bo Dallas-esq condescending babyface and trolled the crowd.

Hillbilly Jim was never the same after they paired him up with Uncle Elmer and Cousin Junior. having hillbillies be faces in the northeast, at the time, was a wrong move. The north has always looked down on the south. Hillbilly Jim missed his calling as a redneck heel who hated the pretty boys, wanting to make 'em squeal like a pig. The rape being implied, of course.

  5. The ghostbuster was an awesome finisher. The wizard... was not an awesome manager

    ReplyDelete
  6. It was a badass finisher, especially for the 1980's

    ReplyDelete
  7. And my god was the Wizard awful.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The hillbillies were over when they taped from Poughkeepsie.
The problem was they were bad workers and the gimmick itself had a short shelf-life

    ReplyDelete
  9. He would go on to become Kevin Sullivan's "father" in the Dungeon of Doom.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Savage = the original Legend Killer

    ReplyDelete
  11. No Tony Garea? How were you able to cope with the huge hole left in the lower card?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mister_E_BarrettsLastPrivateerAugust 29, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Coulier is from Michigan once more.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I used to scream at the top of my lungs I was Koko B. Ware when I was in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sullivan!!!!!
    Sullivan!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. If Wayne Ferris is the black sheep of the family - what does that make Lawler?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I used to think Garea was Italian or Greek. He was from New Zealand.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Nope. Savage was awesome. Yeah!!! But no legend killer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Can't imagine that helped a lot with the ladies

    ReplyDelete
  19. That Phony Canadian prick?

    ReplyDelete
  20. keep in mind this was suppose to be Jones vs

Gustafsson and Demetrious Johnson was suppose to be on the card but both matches got dropped for injuries and such.

There are also 3 other fights originally scheduled for this that injuries cancelled or bumped...one of them earlier today.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Is it too late to switch the dimitrius Johnson fight back to this show lol?

    ReplyDelete
  22. They have to cut back on shows so they have stronger cards. If this doesn't prove it to dana then...they are destined to implode. You follow your cancelled PPV with a UFC debut getting a title shot on 1 days notice...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think you're missing the undercurrent of offensiveness to that, its probably pretty insulting for a little person to be called a kid. I imagine its akin to making nigger jokes to black people in the little person's eyes.

But yeah, as far as locker room politics, good luck with all that heat Horny. I'm sure when you're doing a bitter shoot interview in a few years you'll really let him have it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. And yet they used him to introduce the world to Outback Jack.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Virgil's Gimmick TableAugust 29, 2014 at 4:26 PM

I've never even heard of any of these people. Last time I watched UFC, there were no fighters with any personality. It was like watching a bunch of legitimately tough Curtis Axls fight each other.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Tomorrow's PPV isn't even a good Fight Night.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Is Dana White going to be extremely angry if Soto wins the belt tomorrow night? Me think yes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. UFC's cards are so boring today. We need more beasts like Brock Lesnar.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, that was horse shit.

    ReplyDelete
  30. They need to do an ultimate tournament in Japan or somewhere that would sanction it and have ALL of the weight classes champions including women compete in a winner take all tournament. Imagine the bouts we would see....Champions entering it would be: Jon Jones, Cain Velasquez, Chris Weidman, Johnny Hendricks, Anthony Pettis, Jose Aldo, TJ Dillashaw, Demetrious Johnson, and Ronda Rousey.

I'd pay a good $79.99 on PPV to see this. Have them do a show on ESPN on the Friday before the tournament where each fighter goes to a big spinner and spins it and that sets up the first round matchups.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ronda would finally have a challenge.

    ReplyDelete
  32. She wouldn't last 20 seconds in the cage with ANY of those guys.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Or she would make them tap to hold #2, armbar. If one day this happens I want she winning.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Virgil's Gimmick TableAugust 29, 2014 at 4:47 PM

It makes me sad that they ate so strict with the weight classes. Because this would be an amazing idea if they did it once ever couple of years or something.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Imagine a couple years ago with Anderson Silva, GSP, Lesnar as champs....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Adam "Colorado" CurryAugust 29, 2014 at 4:52 PM

For what? He's fucked up so many times I've lost track.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Brock Lesnar the Ultimate Ultimate fighting champion.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Gotta pretend your tough on discipline when you fuck up

    ReplyDelete
  39. The fans writing in are the best parts sometimes

    ReplyDelete
  40. Working my way through season 4 of Walking Dead on blu-ray...reached an episode with some red-headed military or ex-military guy.

Um...did Shamus miss this casting call? Due is about 3 inches of spiked hair and an Irish accent away from being a dead ringer.

    ReplyDelete
  41. IF Dillinshaw and Soto get into a fight at the weigh in...i think they may have been coached.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I can't hate this one. Aldon Smith is a horrible person. Plus it helps the Saints

    ReplyDelete
  43. HAHAHAHA! Just saw the news! This shit is hilarious.

A promotional newcomer/no name is getting a PPV main event title shot. Keep up the good work Dana!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I hate Goodell more than anyone, but this one I didn't blink at, so that's good.

Everyone knew the first guy post-Rice was getting hammered. I agree with Whitlock said on PTI. Instead of playing Wheel of Justice, why not talk about ways you are helping the player?

    ReplyDelete
  45. ...personal experience coloring that opinion for you?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Jesus Christ don't say that... one of the 2,000 idiot writers will think you are serious

    ReplyDelete
  47. Off-field stuff aside, the new rule changes are terrible for the game. And they wonder why receivers get lit up all the time. If you can even touch them at any point, defensive players are going to play off of you and run full-speed and knock the shit out of them.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I can sympathize with Hornswoggle...but could Rock have made an honest mistake?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Reigns has AWESOME hair.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Chaning Tatum pales in comparison to Miz

    ReplyDelete
  51. I watched it and I thought it was pretty damn funny and had some nice little "tug at the heart strings" moments... it obviously isn't Citizen Kane... but Rock dragged it kicking and screaming to being entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I had a pretty awful day/week... but BoD is the opposite of where I come to meltdown.

    ReplyDelete
  53. That is really unfair! He has been going on for close to SIX months about it!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Have you noticed that you have been gradually getting more and more "face pops" around here?

    ReplyDelete
  55. He needs to either wipe his ass or blow his nose with the towel

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sadly he is now back to being from America

    ReplyDelete
  57. Virgil's Gimmick TableAugust 29, 2014 at 5:36 PM

That's true. But does good hair win titles?... Apparently, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Virgil's Gimmick TableAugust 29, 2014 at 5:37 PM

That probably would have broken every pay per view record ever set.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Absolutely. This has nothing to do with any self imagined regional bias. Bad workers. They didn't entertain.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The show was more entertaining than any other WWE show in the last season, if only for the segments with Stone Cold chewing the booted contestants a new asshole at the end of each episode. The results don't matter to me.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Supposedly, Tiger Jackson (aka Dink the Clown) had to deal with tons of bullying from the Kliq back in the day. Apparently him and the Bushwackers were HBK and Kevin Nash's favorite bullying targets.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I've watched a few Moondogs matches from Memphis on YouTube, and the difference between then and WWF is almost as great as the Sheepherders. They were pretty vicious heels, and they and the Fabulous Ones seemed to bleed all over on each other on a pretty regular basis.

There's also a pretty good six-man with the Moondogs and Jimmy Hart against the surreal team of Rock & Roll Express and Bobby Eaton.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Does it count as a threadjack if it's your own article?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Spot could still go but Rex was pretty bad

    ReplyDelete
  65. I can't wait until you recap Outback Jack's introduction. Talk about a gimmick bombing.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ohhhhh yeah. I'm Koko B. Ware Hare. Sadly I can't sing it like I did in High School.
