September Classics: Six Pack Challenge - Unforgiven '99

The British Bulldog. Mankind. Triple H. Kane. The Big Show. The Rock. The referees were all on strike. Steve Austin was the special enforcer. The WWF Championship was around Abeyance's waist and it was up for grabs due to Vince McMahon beating Triple H for the title on an episode of Smackdown and relinquishing it. The Undertaker was supposed to be in this match, but was kayfabe fired by Vince for refusing to face Triple H. This was also at the end of Russo's time with the WWF. However, the resulting match was a near masterpiece, considering all the people involved. The video is in two parts, so make sure you watch both.

  1. Quite the underrated match here. There were many MOTY candidates from the WWF in 1999 (even though it's one of my favorite years ever in wrestling), but this was one of them.

  2. I believe our beloved leader gave this ****1/2. WWF MOTY for '99 is a toss-up between this one and Edge/Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz ladder match at No Mercy.

  3. They were finally getting better in terms of workrate in the Fall of 1999. Outside of the dud that was Armageddon 1999 the end of the year was very good.
I personally was getting less interested up until WrestleMania 2000 because of my lack of interest in HHH.

Meltzer only gave it like ***1/2. Not enough chest slapping and head dropping I guess.

  5. Wasn't this the only match Bulldog wore his regular tights for before going completely in jeans?

  6. I love how folks slam Vince's WWE title reign but as HHH put it on the McMahon DVD, "it's his belt, why shouldn't he hold it?" And at least Vince immediately dropped it, unlike, say, Verne Gagne who had a stranglehold on the AWA title for literally years and, more recently, Jeff Jarrett's domination of the NWA belt in TNA. Par for the course for the business.
But do love the bit on that DVD where everyone mocks Vince as one of the absolute worst people to get in the ring with. HHH: "He thinks he's Lou Thesz but he has no idea what the hell he's doing out there."

  7. I think he returned on Sunday night heat in jeans.

  8. The British Bulldog. Mankind. Triple H. Kane. The Big Show. The Rock.

Bulldog really sticks out like a sore thumb in that list. Did anyone realistically think he would win it?

  9. This was a weird period, where Bulldog had just come back and they had absolutely no idea what to do with him. One week he was headining, the next jobbing in curtain jerkers. JR was right - there´s only so many times you can repackage BB.

  10. He was never a serious threat for the world title outside of mayyyyyybe late 95.

  11. You aren't kidding, remember that Smackdown where Val Venis randomly challenged Austin to a match?

  12. Great point about Jarrett. That moment where JJ won the belt and the fans pelted the ring with garbage is one of my favourite wrestling clips. Jeff is, by most accounts, a really good person - but he is fucking deluded about his standing in wrestling. I think X-Pac heat needs to be renamed Jeff Jarrett Heat - reactions to him as champ in WCW were literally channel changing levels of ambivalent unimpressedness.

At least Vince´s victory worked into a storyline and he relinquished it almost immediately.

  13. HHH vs Austin at No Mercy was over **** as well. It was one of the best 1999 ppvs

    ReplyDelete
  14. he did this ppv in the classic tights and then it was jeans. Which sucked cause his tights are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Then they finally brainstormed and had him lead the Mean Street Posse around.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I do! The use of Val around this time was really odd too - it´s like they had a push planned for him, but promptly forgot about him.

Of course, they did plan to elevate him to main event status around this time, but that obviously never materialised.

  17. I rate the 6 pack challenge match the same and I agree with the No Mercy match being the WWF's MOTY for 99.

... Come on buddy. Don't be this guy.

  19. I miss watching my Nitro vhs rips because the network doesn't have dinner and a movie or valvoline commercials.

  20. Sunny confirmed the Davey affair not too long ago, which is surprising since the Harts are so morally superior to everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Davey seemed like a dick by association, you don't hear stories of him being so bad on his own. Well, he was a drug abuser who abused his wife and had affairs but that's still a pretty good guy in wrestling.

  22. Yet more evidence of just how scummy most wrestlers are

DOES THIS LOOK LIKE SOMETHING A SPONGE WOULD DO?!

    ReplyDelete
  24. If he can do it, he can do it - I mean I can!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I still get annoyed when thinking of how Monty Brown, one of the hottest acts they ever had, jobbed to Jarrett on PPV. They didn't have to put it on Monty right away as Jarrett could have screwjobbed his way out and let Monty chase him but nope, Jeff had to pin the guy.

  26. Reigns: "I've lost many things over the last few months.. most of all I've lost my smirk."

    ReplyDelete
  27. That was shocking - a proper full retard moment from TNA. Ah well, this is wrestling - we shouldn´t have expected anything less!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Probably because his gimmick was a death knell to anyone taking him seriously. Plus his so so mic work and nondescript ring skills.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I dont see anything wrong with vince mcmahon winning it. But wwe slams russo winning the wcw title and they never stop to explain the difference in him and mcmahon winning it (because there is no difference.) Neither one bothered me. It was just storyline and they both stripped themselves of the belt just a few days later. The hypocrisy of wwe is just too much for me sometimes

  30. Read a lot of interviews and shoot stuff on Jarrett and consensus is he's a good mid-card guy who honestly thinks he's on the level of stardom as Flair, Hogan or Austin. And when a guy like that is in charge of a company, that's not a good thing, TNA really had more faces they could have run as champs but Jeff demanded the belt so much, including cutting Raven's reign short just so he could be champ for the Spike debut.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No response to Neidhart denying Sunny Days?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Owen's shenanigans are cheeky and fun. The Bulldogs' shenanigans are cruel and tragic. Which wouldn't make them shenanigans at all, really... EVIL shenanigans!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thst came off like a backhanded way of making himself out to he the good guy, by just apologizing abd admitting fault for everything while Bret still looked like a petty asshoke.

    ReplyDelete
  34. If you ignore the sodomy, he's a stand up guy!

    ReplyDelete
  35. If you're looking for road stories, Nasty Boyz volume 2 is nothing but.

Anvil sounds like an unapologetic shitter, which makes for a good shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Man, he sounded like he was completely full of it.
