BoD Daily Update

Daniel Bryan Update

Last night at the Smackdown taping in Houston, WWE filmed a segment where the Big Show addressed the crowd and informed them that Daniel Bryan will need to undergo surgery on his arm. Bryan hasn't wrestled since April, and has been rehabbing since June but has not regained strength in his arm.

RAW Viewership for this Week

The 10/27 episode of Raw did 3,745,000 viewers, which is up 50,000 from last week’s number. That number was the second lowest of 2014. The company had hoped for better the day after the Hell In A Cell PPV. The show lost audience as the night went on, dropping from 3,868,000 viewers in hour one to 3,529,000 in hour three.

Clearing Up CM Punk Rumors

The return of CM Punk merchandise (most of which has already sold out) to the WWE website was more a case of loose ends being tied up, according to one source we've spoken with. When Punk's WWE deal expired this past July, with it went the rights to his name and likeness, since he had them since well before his WWE run began in 2006. WWE and Punk are believed to have worked out a settlement that allowed WWE to sell off remaining stock and use Punk in the new WWE videogame. The Punk character will also be seen in the forthcoming WWE/Flintstones film, since animation had been completed well before Punk walked out on the company in January 2014. Sources close to Punk state he is retired as a pro wrestler and a WWE return is not happening.

Undertaker's Developmental Role

Undertaker will not be a full time trainer, and will pick and choose the dates he works. He will come in, give NXT talent advice and also share the “WWE etiquette” with the developmental talents. WWE wants the developmental talents to know what is expected of them when they reach the main roster, and they feel that the Undertaker is the perfect man to educate them.

How I started my work day: Made a cup of coffee and brought it to my desk. Before I could put in the Sweet n Low, a suicidal bee landed on the spoon in the mug and took a dive into the hot java below.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Undertaker advice..."get a great gimmick so you can dog it in the ring for the first 13 or 14 years of your career and then just hand pick the top guys to career you to great matches at the end of your career and boom..a legacy."

    ReplyDelete
  3. So what I got out of the UT statement was that he'll pay surprise visits to developmental and slap the shit out of anyone who doesn't introduce themselves to him.

    ReplyDelete
  4. So let me get this straight....

    1. Bryan needs arm surgery.
    2. Raw ratings are down.
    3. Punk is not returning.
    4. Taker is training guys on handshakes.

    What a depressing sounding day.

    ReplyDelete
  5. TJ: So I just watched PWG for the first time. The main event was Kyle O'Reilly vs. Adam Cole (I think the show was called Matt Rushmore) and I thought the show was good, but it reminded me a little of watching lucha. Everyone working together to do super cool moves...I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'm not well versed in how they're training the NXT guys at the performance center these days, but if I were in charge I'd hire a slew of veteran wrestlers to come in and teach the intangibles that a lot of people coming up seem to lack. Get Jake down for a week to teach ring psychology, bring Flair or Austin in for promo work, have a Ricky Morton or Stan Lane explain the nuances of tag wrestling.

It's not only a way to help tap into a wealth of knowledge accrued from the territory days, but it's be a boon to a lot of legends who may not have much going on.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ratings have been slowly trending downward for the past year, which is telling because they'd remained relatively static over the last three or four years. And I forget where, but I recall recently reading that merchandise sales are also declining at a steady rate.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think that is the rough plan: that's why they have ex-wrestlers as trainers

    ReplyDelete
  9. Maybe try one of the BOLA's? Because tournaments are awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Could've been worse; we were in the mountains years ago, and somehow a hornet ended up inside my brother's shirt. Hilarity ensued.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm pretty sure this is exactly what HHH is doing.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah, I know they have guys like Bill DeMott there. I've always thought they were missing the boat by localizing in one area for ALL their developmental talent. Keeping NXT as your Teiple A level is fine, but I think it would do a service to the young guys to have places like Ohio Valley and Heartland to go work to broaden their exposure to the nuances they can't experience at Full Sail.

    ReplyDelete
  13. They do invite talent to come help out with training. Jericho, Sean Waltman, and Mickie James have all been there in the past year or so.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Bill DeMott. FFS.

Perhaps it should have been a header.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I could be wrong, but I really don't see the traditional big boost in the new year this time. I don't think the returns of Rock, Brock and whomever else are gonna bump the ratings as much as they have done in past years.

    ReplyDelete
  20. To be fair, look at who he had to work with. King Kong Bundy? Giant Gonzales? Kamala?

    ReplyDelete
  21. You know something that doesn't get enough play in my estimation, regarding Cena? We all argue ad nauseam how stale the guy is and how desperately he needs a change, but the consensus argument against it is that he's the face of the company and brings in the children.

What's interesting is that the early generations of Cena fans are in their late teens and early twenties (!) now. The same process that happened with Hogan may be replaying now: as Cena's older fans start growing out of the base, he's pulling in less new fans to replace them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bryan being out longer (probably) really bums me out. Whenever he was on I knew it was guaranteed entertainment. Ambrose is getting to that point but he wasn't on the level DBry was.

    ReplyDelete
  23. DBry was Guaranteed Tremendous Wrestling. Ambrose is just Guaranteed Tremendous.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Good thing they faked the Roman Reigns injury to get him off tv so Taker can train him on the art of the handshake. When he feels like it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Those poor kids are going from Funtime Full Sail TV tapings in sunny Orlando to Chicago and Philadelphia. Hoo boy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree; there's been a reliance on the part time guys to handle the big moments along with Cena, which keeps young talents from progressing. Now the luster of those part timers is wearing off, and they have very little to offer otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Man there is a lot of bad news for smarks in this STR8 gangster update.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Oh yeah, you might as well call that Hogan Syndrome, because every time they try to reinvent him it either fails miserably from the start (Diesel) or this happens. That's why Austin and then Rock were so successful for wrestling, they were a brand new phenomena to latch on to, not a re-tread of Hogan, who had to turn heel to stop the slow, steady decline he was causing in the late 90's. Yeah yeah we all want Cena to be heel, but going back further look at how the whole backlash started...after he won the title in '05 he STOPPED acting like the fresh face we were all getting into, and became a smiling happy Hoganite.

  73. AJ? Oh right that is his wife... they probably don't talk much.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The only thing that makes me consider he might not be back is he was against the part time guys so it would be hypocritical to then become one. That being said I would still put money on him coming back and maybe now that he is out he sees the ..oh hey...getting to a point where you get to call the shots instead of having Vince grind you into a nub..is a pretty great way to be a wrestler.

I know it's fun to make jokes about "learning to shake hands" and that silly shit, but there's etiquette specific to any line of work, and employees having to take training on it is pretty common. I work in banking and just finished a multi-part business etiquette training thing two days ago that all bank employees had to take.

"But starting some bullshit band and recording a podcast aren't gonna pay for that palace in Wicker Park forever."

    Doesn't he own real estate?

I don't think we can apply the old rules anymore. Guys used to come back because they had to, not because of some imaginary "itch" to wrestle. They needed the money, someone was willing to pay, and there you are. But guys are making far more money now and investing wisely, thus breaking the old cycles of "making a big payday, blowing through it in a year and having to come crawling back" from the territory days. Not to say every retired wrestler will stay retired, but I think far more will than in the old days.

I think the real question is: if he does decide to return at some point, will WWE actually take him back? Especially if HHH and Steph have taken over by then?

    ReplyDelete
  105. I was largely being facetious with the "won't pay for that Wicker Park palace" crack, but you could be right. I have no idea if he owns real estate or what other kind of business ventures he's in.
I don't think it's true that guys today are making more money than in the past; you hear stories about even run-of-the-mill undercard guys making 10-15K a week on Hogan's house show circuits, and it's hard to imagine that even with inflation all but a handful of guys are making that today.
But Punk sold a fuckton of merchandise and drew well when he was on top of the house circuit, so he's definitely in that handful who have made millions in recent years. He might not need the money, but I still have a hard time imagining him not coming back.

    ReplyDelete
  106. 2015 should be fine. People are going to want to see Avengers: Age of Ultron.

2016 is probably the first possible cracks, between Marvel, DC, Sony, and Fox throwing all of these movies out as if they can't ever fail. I think Marvel's only real big issue is they are linking all of these movies to each other, like a giant crossover, so people can't really skip them. X-Men Apocalypse is well timed for a May release, and Cap: Civil War in May is great. Suicide Squad. in August could be DOA. Sinister Six by Sony in November is a hard call.

2017 will hurt it some more. Apparently JLA has been banished to November, which once again makes me want to rant about how JLA has been completely overtaken by Guardians and Cap.

  114. Its almost 100% impossible that he won't come back. Maybe he'll be gone for multiple years like Shawn and maybe his comeback will be super part time like Rock but there is big money in a punk comeback and he must enjoy the actual wrestling to some extent so it would be crazy for him not to do it. Why not make one last run for a lot of money, on your own terms? Punk won't pass that up, but who knows when it will be.

    ReplyDelete
  115. They're friends of friends though. I think he's doomed to have to be really nice here or his whole circle might fall apart.

    ReplyDelete
  116. also, it seems that this year the movies have started to become more "diverse" in terms of what genres they belong to.

while I think the makers of "The Winter Soldier" seem to overestimate the "spy thriller" aspect of that movie, I feel that one can't deny it had several parts in which the movie seemed to try to be less of a "standard comic book movie".

if they can keep this up (and for example, put out one film that fits more in the "horror" category while another is "classic scifi") it can see it work fine for a lot of years to come.

I guess my take would be "come back for what, exactly?" if a return is on the table. A feud with Fandango or something similar? Because I doubt he'd come back for anything less than a Wrestlemania main event, and I don't know if WWE is going to be willing to give that to a guy who walked out so publicly. I just see it as a never-ending battle of wills where both sides will only do business on their own terms, and thus no business gets done.

    But stranger things have happened.

I will agree that you don't go through all the shit that Punk (and others) went through just to get to a certain level with an intense love of the wrestling business. But it seems like WWE is a really tough environment to work in day-to-day, and more than one person who had lifelong ambitions to become a wrestler has gone through that system, flamed out and then walked away completely over the last fifteen years or so.

  131. I think this really might be the signing that turns the company around.

    ReplyDelete
  132. No, more like Joker took down Superman with Joker gas or other nonsense.

Maybe Joke will be a computer hacker, and then Batman EMPed his equipment, and then some random acid in Joker's apartment reacts badly with the EMP and blows up. Vola, Joker!

  133. Working in NYC there is literally know way that goes bad for him.

  134. Oh it's real! It's damn real!!

Well, obviously. We just saw a prime example this year with Warrior.

However, that type of stuff happens because Vince McMahon, above all else, is still a businessman. So grudges will be put aside if there's money to be made. Will HHH and Steph have the same philosophy when they take over? We'll see, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I'm sure you're right, but its the "Curb your Enthusiasm" kinda funny. It's funny, but it's too painfully akward and uncomfortable to look at for long.

It's the Elmer Fudd hat worn indoors that pushes it over the edge for me. At some point he must have thought that was a good idea.

That makes me feel like crying

    ReplyDelete
  137. #KurtAngleTNA is now trending on Myspace and in the the AOL Wrestling chat rooms.. this just got real!!

    ReplyDelete
  138. "I still wet the bed but that's ok."

  139. Hopefully. I know Strucker was hinted in Winter Soldier, so I want him to show up and lead HYDRA proper, along with the Satan's Claw. Hopefully a hot Madame Hydra as well.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I mean...one of them is Vince's daughter and the other has been learning this business (I mean, "THIS BUSINESS") from him for 20 years. Plenty will change when Vince isn't around, but I think a willingness to do business with anyone who will make them money is a tenet I'd guess will stick around.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Money left on the table in that youtube clip.

  142. The Love-Matic Grampa!October 29, 2014 at 8:58 AM

I wonder if "Angle and WWE are in talks" was a bluff by Kurt to get a better contract.

Dixie: Kurt, you might have to take a pay cut...
Kurt: Hey, I have a great conversation with Vince McMahon yesterday...
Dixie: Uh, well, we'll find the money somewhere!

    ReplyDelete
  143. Damn that's meh.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Was this seriously her "major announcement"? This can't be, can it? If so, that's terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  145. The Love-Matic Grampa!October 29, 2014 at 9:01 AM

I wonder if Seth and Dean actually booked their own feud? Because they're about the right age to have been fans of early 90s Nickelodeon shows.

    Could explain a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Oh yeah. Hopefully we'll get a comedy skit with the Guardians just running into Korvac the middle of space or a bar, playing his space organ. I don't think too many people will be upset that Korvac was booked incorrectly.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I Double Dare you to prove that. They know You Can't Do That On Television.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Yes it’s embarrassing and terrible, but there’s so many “Youtube Stars”
these days, and everything THEY do is embarrassing and terrible, so who knows?
Maybe he could be the next big thing.

  149. You guys know what hyperbole is right? In terms of conversation.

    ReplyDelete
  150. "Well now that you're a little bit older I can tell you the truth. No matter how good you are at something, there's always gonna be a million people better than you".

    ReplyDelete
  151. He should've! There were too many Undertakers that year.

    ReplyDelete
  152. Just read the Smackdown spoilers and I won't give anything away for the 5 people who actually watch that show, but 1) WWE maintains it's streak of putting together a pointless Friday show, and 2) Dean "The Lunatic Foodie" Ambrose strikes again with more food-based hijinks! Yup, the pro wrestling revolution is here and it'll be led by an adult Dennis the Menace.
    YUCK.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Perhaps Seth or Dean could Explain It All?

    ReplyDelete
  154. Nah that's unfair man, Undertaker is a legend in the truest sense and as we all know in-ring ability isn't the only thing that's important for these guys to learn

    ReplyDelete
  155. It was the "No undertakerS club". They were allowed to have one.

    ReplyDelete
  156. At least he took some time off. Green smoke coming out of anything is never a good sign.

    ReplyDelete
  157. They obviously see big things for him with the how they go out of their way to make him look like a star. Most guys will never get that sort of prop comedy push. They save it for their biggest names.

    ReplyDelete
  158. And look who's on the receiving end of said food-based hijinks *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  159. And remember, tomorrow's disaster of a Network number is exactly what they planned on!

    ReplyDelete
  160. At least he can make that shit work. Both he and Cody are quite adept at turning shit into gold.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Well you see the audience would revolt if John cena wasn't always on top.

    ReplyDelete
  162. At this point the WWE dream match isn't Punk vs Austin, it's Ambrose vs Carrot Top.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Has anyone else seen the banner ad for WWF Concussion Lawsuit? I'd be more inclined to see what they're doing if they weren't apparently suing the World Wildlife Fund.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Dean 'Titty Master' Ambrose's Credibility: 2013 - 2014.

    He was Crushed by Condiments.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Only way this ends up making sense is if it turns out Cena was working with the Authority all along, and goes on an epic rant about how stupid we all were to not see he was always getting the title shots, always on all the posters etc. That would be brilliant, but it won't happen

    ReplyDelete
  166. He couldn't pull off that mannequin segment. That was just death.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Mini TJ: Since it's is well known that I barely every watch Raw, last Sunday was my 1st time actually hearing Ambrose's theme music. And it is quite awesome, especially with the super long entrance, and him going up the Cell. The engine revving up over and over, awesomeness.

I have no doubt he'll be a top guy for the next several years. No need to worry or panic.

    ReplyDelete
  168. We know that Dean is now Afraid of the Dark.

    ReplyDelete
  169. tbk will be crushed.
If they have Santa in Brazil.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Though to be fair there wasn't any food involved, so he wasn't really in his element.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Um no, no he doesn't always win.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Ghosts. [/Jobber]

    ReplyDelete
  173. Based on one song?! I thought Babylon Zoo would rule the world based on one song, didn't happen.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I love that Caliber obviously thinks that his song is indeed str8 gangster, yo. Three chords and the truth, dog! Whiskey-flavoured licks and tough bad luck chords 'cos of mah woman, mah man!

Except that it sounds to me to be damn near identical to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcN5Vaqd9sg, a lovely 90s indie song. By the most crap-in-a-fight, is-there-a-vegan-alternative band of wimps ever.

Oh, Caliber. When will you and Meekin start your own weekly video blog together and become champions of the internet?

    ReplyDelete
  175. He's the prop-based comedy job guy to the heels who are about to face the real stars: Cena, Orton, and Reigns.

    ReplyDelete
  176. It just fit well with the moment. I think he's being "buried" the same way that Daniel Bryan was "buried" last year. In other words, not at all.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Don't Just Sit There! The WWE Universe is Out Of Control.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Fucking exhausted I can't believe I stayed up until almost 2am for that shit.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Yeah but in this case, even when he lost, he still won. He got a title match AND got to face Rollins anyway. Even you have to admit that is shoddy booking

    ReplyDelete
  180. We should start a long conversation about Babylon Zoo, just so help compensate for all the months I have to wonder "Who the fuck is this TeBow guy?" whilst browsing through thread-jacked topics here.

To be fair though, everyone thought that Babylon Zoo were going to hear the world based on one song, until they heard the song.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Pretty sure he'll lose the next match against Brock. The one that everyone here is dreading for some reason. And there's this guy named Daniel Bryan that kind of beat him 100% clean too.

    ReplyDelete
  182. I can't explain it, but I have a sudden urge to wear a ludicrous hunting cap with shorts, and indoors.

    ReplyDelete
  183. they sort of do - except there they call him "Tranny Claus"

    ReplyDelete
  184. Yeah I know, that's why I said "in this case". You agree that the booking in this case makes no sense, right?

    ReplyDelete
  185. That's not even close to the most interesting video on that channel.

    ReplyDelete
  186. His theme sounds like what you'd get if you mixed Sparkplugg Holly, Razor Ramon and Mick Foley's 'car crash' theme together whilst watching a video of Puff Daddy performing his song from the Godzilla soundtrack.

I like that WWE are now seemingly in the 'rip off other successful rock songs' era of WCW.
