I apologize for the quality of this one. October in 2002 brought some awesome goodness on the Smackdown side. I want to focus on that timeframe with the next several videos. Let's kick it off with this match between Edge and Kurt Angle. Earlier in 2002, they had a feud which led to Angle losing his hair. Edge and Rey Mysterio formed a team as they were entered into the WWE Tag Team Championship tournament. Angle had formed an alliance with Chris Benoit. Here is a singles match between Edge and Angle in the middle of all this.

I'm still SuperCard-ing most days, almost done maxing out my Pro Epic Jericho. I imagine I'll be at it quite a bit this weekend with a new People's Champion match going on
ReplyDeleteEnough with Kurt Angle already!!! I'm starting to develop a contact pain pill addiction.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteThe only place women's wrestling has ever been huge was Japan for a while in the late 80's/early 90's. And that was just because of 2 or 3 big stars on top catching fire and 2 or 3 more carrying a second wave of popularity. That will doubtfully ever happen here.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that the Knockouts have headlined a few Impacts over the years (most recently a few weeks ago) and even get their own PPV's
ReplyDelete...well, it's true :\
I am not sure if the her fights being really wasn't even a bigger obstacle initially.
ReplyDeletemany men like eye candy and cat fights but don't think it's "feminine" to really hit each other in the face (for the same weird reason there also people who specifically don't like when "women use curse words").
I think from a kayfabe perspective (which is what counts) it was absolutely believable.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, this is what pops into my mind when I think of GLOW. That's an eternity you won't get back...
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiXafKF9XCU
that's a LOT of assumption and seems at least debatable.
ReplyDeleteYeah I cant imagine that 99 womens roster filling a two hour show, especially when not one of them was known for promos or acting.
ReplyDeleteWell, the McMahons are Republican...
ReplyDeleteThose hell in a cell cards are sick.
ReplyDeleteWhat annoys me about this game is waiting for your guys to heal up. This 20 minute wait stuff is nonsense.
ReplyDeleteI like woman's wrestling because it (at it's best) is cruiser/junior heavyweight wrestling but the wrestlers actually have gimmicks.
ReplyDeleteAnd KANA is a beast.
I don't know if it has to do with my personal sex life or my attitude towards sex in general (does me being european play into this?), but I really don't think she seems that "far out" regarding sex. hmm...
ReplyDeleteYeah, according to Bruce Mitchell, women's wrestling was a much bigger draw until Moolah pretty much ruined it w/ her political maneuvering
ReplyDeleteThe whole basis of selling wrestling shows is creating the perception that wrestlers are legitimate badasses. There's no reason they couldn't sign a tough, compelling female wrestler from the indie scene (Havok or Kana, for instance), having her destroy a bunch of people, and then build up some interesting or sympathetic challengers so people want to see who can take her down.
ReplyDeletewhat did she exactly do? how was women's wrestling ruined? and why is she held in such high regard? and where does Mae Young fit into all this?
ReplyDeleteWell what do you mean by 'far out'? We don't actually know what she enjoys but she certainly talks about cock with a passion rarely seen outside girls who are paid to talk like that. Well, I guess technically she's getting paid to talk like that too but I believe she's like that IRL. I'm European too btw
ReplyDeleteShe controlled the booking of all the talent. And she used them to put her over.
ReplyDeleteShe also controlled many other aspects of their lives, many of which were not PG...
How did she rise up like that? I mean this is the territory days, right? I can understand if she had this power in, say, just the Carolinas. Why would it be national?
ReplyDeleteI know very little about Moolah's seedy underbelly, and only know her as beloved WWE legend. I always assumed her and Mae were lesbian lovers though
watch Broad City on Comedy Central. Those 2 talk about how much they love cock constantly
ReplyDeleteAnd you're white. I fail to see your point.
ReplyDelete"Don't treat me like a Woman
ReplyDeleteDon't treat me like a man
Don't treat me like you know me
Treat me for just who I am."
Upvote for Kana. I also dig Syuri a lot
ReplyDeleteAt one times the KO segment were the one with the highest audience. Too bad TNA never really capitalise on it
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone denies she was bigger than HHH. Adding her as his bodyguard saved his entire act.
ReplyDeleteYouTube the Leilani Kai shoot. Even the clips are pretty damning for Moolah.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little late to the party on MPQ, but I love the hell out of it. I'm pretty damn good, too! Look me up: mcgrathbrianj
ReplyDelete(Clever, I know)
I don't know if things were just as botchtastic then as they are now, but the pre-Divas style had WAY more impact than what we see now. It's not even close. The women's matches now look like a gymnastics routine compared to the 80's. Women like Sherri, Judy Martin, Richter, Moolah, Leilani Kai, etc. came off as if they could legit fuck each other up. The other way the current women could fuck each other up is they scratched each other's corneas.
ReplyDeleteVinnie Ru and Ferrera would have tried to make it work. They made ivory, terri, jacky, luna, tori, sable, damn, even ryan shamrock into stars with storylines in 99.
ReplyDeleteEverything is debatable. Richter was a heel up until a month or two before the Lauper angle. She was the best looking female they had for the MTV/media (there wasn't a lot to choose from) so they did a quickie face turn. No one cared about women's wrestling before the angle and it quickly died off after the angle (with periodic attempts with Sherri Martel, Rockin' Robin, and the Jumping Bomb Angels). I'm not a huge subscriber to the easily replaceable theory in most cases but this one is as about as cut and dried as any I've seen in wrestling. And the matches Richter had on the big stage were awful (can't speak on house shows).
ReplyDeleteAs far as facts as opposed to my opinion above, ratings consistently dropped for diva matches for years. Now non-wrestling segments with tits and ass? Those often got above average ratings in the attitude era (specifically Sable) but once Russo left and they toned that down a bit, straight ladies wrestling matches, even with Lita and Trish tended to see drops in quarterlies.
That's true. But the matches were still awful back then in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteDamn.
ReplyDeleteJust...Damn.
Holy Shit.. I remember that now too!!
ReplyDeleteMoolah trafficked young girls as hookers and got them on drugs. She was one of the biggest pieces of shit in the business ever.
ReplyDeleteTrue, unless the Jumping Bomb Angels were included. I remember being blown away by them as a 9 year old when I rented Survivor Series '87.
ReplyDeleteThey are going to have to stop letting the crowd come to the HOF by the time they start inducting some of the people from the PG years.
ReplyDeleteIt would've been interesting if they had run Austin-Chyna as the SummerSlam '99 main event. I know why they didn't, but looking back that would've been very, very interesting.
ReplyDeleteShe should be in the HOF, but political reasons (as well as personal ones with Steph) will keep her out.
They are not included in that. They ruled
ReplyDeleteRepublicans are not a fan of planned parenthood or birth control. So, in some way, Kharma's pregnancy was their fault based upon the policies they endorse.
ReplyDeleteSimilar to how a child not knowing how to read is related to a person voting against increased spending on literacy programs or schooling.
And yes, I'm over explaining the joke in an effort to mock you.
I'm not a guy who says that Poru>All Other Wrestling because there are MASSIVE issues with Japanese Wrestling, but I think Joshi is right in the sweet spot of good wrestling, it gets enough time and love to actually be good, but it's not self-indulgent and excessive either.
ReplyDeleteA Bella HOF induction would make the 2014 Rumble revolt look like the pro-Bryan crowd at the end of Mania XXX.
ReplyDeleteReaaallllly doubt Vinnie Mac is a social conservative. Hot Lesbian Action and family values don't really go together. He's a keep the government off my back Republican.
ReplyDeleteI preferred angle before head shaving. He was super awesome badass from 2001 - mid 2002
ReplyDeleteWell of course Lauper was the draw, you could say the same about Tyson being the draw for WM 14. But Richter was pretty over back then. Just a case of being in the right place at the right time....
ReplyDeleteIt was mostly a joke. But I doubt Vince is in favor of free condoms or prenatal care or any sort of social family services.
ReplyDeleteI am aware that his politics are basically that of a roaring 20s evil tycoon. He's a coke snorting, hooker banging rich bastard.
Because his hair was already so relatively short (even if thinning), I thought at the time that the best payoff for the head shaving angle would be for Kurt to barely escape with the headgear and wig for at least a month or two, only to get de-wigged and... hey, his hair has grown back! Then Edge goes nuts on him and shaves his head again for good or something, I dunno.
ReplyDeleteI mean, are we to believe that during the time Angle (or CM Punk, for that matter) were hiding their hideous hairless scalps for however long it took for them to be revealed, they were shaving their heads and then putting the wig/headgear (or lucha mask, for that matter) just because?
Wait until you get to higher levels and you wind up waiting an hour or two. Wolverine and Daken heal faster (esp. Patch Wolverine), and heal during battle. If I were starting from scratch, I'd make two-star Daken a mainstay until I could build Classic Daken.
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome idea.
ReplyDeleteOut of the entire roster, Edge was the only guy who was elevated by the brand extension.
ReplyDeleteThe gameplay with the puzzles and power ups is awesome. It's everything else that is broken.
ReplyDeleteI finished the first story stage no problem. Started the Juggernaut story and got up to the point where you face a level 25 Jugg. I lost in 20 seconds. I have a level 9 Iron Man, level 9 Widow, and a level 8 Storm and I can't beat him. Can't beat the fake Wolverine in that stage either.
The game is too hard for free to play people.
I'm a free to play person, and I've been at it for almost a year. Replay the missions you've already won, get more rewards, level up your guys, and you should be able to win. SHIELD simulator matches are also a good way to get covers and Iso8, and see if you can join an alliance.
