The SmarK Rant for WWE Hell In A Cell 2014

The SmarK Rant for WWE Hell in a Cell 2014

Live from Dallas, TX

Your hosts are Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler & JBL

Intercontinental title: Dolph Ziggler v. Cesaro

Roku immediately pisses me off by repeatedly picking up the show halfway in, even though I asked for “from the beginning”. Thankfully switching to the Xbox One fixed the problem, although the show just picks up from Ziggler’s entrance without any fancy graphics or intro. Turns out that was another problem with the stream, as it crashed back to the WWE Network interface after this match and when I restarted, I got the full intro. On the bright side, I unlocked an achievement (“Time Traveller”) for fast-forwarding through the match the second time! Cesaro has now given up the dream of having hair and is rocking the bald look. Now if he shaves the beard into a goatee he might have something there. Cesaro works the headlock to start, but Ziggler gets a backslide for two and they do a pinfall exchange sequence before Cesaro tries a Giant Swing. Ziggler reverses into a small package for two, but a second Swing succeeds and gets two, before Ziggler reverses for the first fall at 3:38. Cesaro immediately double-stomps him and hits a running forearm in the corner for two. Middle rope elbow misses, but he slugs Ziggler down and goes to a chinlock. Dolph fights out with an armbreaker, but Cesaro double-stomps him for two and follows with a nice powerbomb for two. Ziggler bails and comes back in with a weird wristlock submission out of a suplex attempt, but Cesaro breaks in the corner. And then he deadlifts Ziggler into a superplex for two. That was a very cool sequence of stuff, very different from what you see typically. Cesaro charges and hits the corner, and Ziggler hits the fameasser for two. Zig Zag is reversed into the Swiss Death forearm for two, but Ziggler cradles for two. Another Zig Zag is reversed into a backbreaker, but Ziggler goes to the arm and superkicks him into the Zig Zag for two straight falls at 12:20. So yeah, the lesson here is “don’t do an interview where you bitch about the main eventers having 500 straight matches” because this is what happens. Good and different type of match, but only 12 minutes for a 2/3 falls match? Why even bother? ***1/4

Meanwhile, I get a commercial for the WWE Network…on the WWE Network. And again the announcers call everyone watching on PPV idiots for doing so.

Meanwhile, the Authority wants Orton to channel his anger into John Cena rather than worrying about Seth Rollins.

Nikki Bella v. Brie Bella

Brie gets a rollup for two and a backslide for two as Lawler calls it the “ultimate sibling rivalry in WWE”. COME ON. Nikki gets a knee to the head for two as the crowd decides to turn on the match now and starts chanting for JBL. Brie with a carpet muncher for two. Brie with a running knee and Nikki bails to escape, but Brie follows with a suicide dive where Brie literally misses so badly that she lands headfirst on Nikki’s knee instead. Back in, Brie with a missile dropkick, but Nikki hits the torture rack drop for two. Brie then wraps her up in the Yes-Lock, but Nikki makes the ropes. And another Rack Attack finishes at 6:20. Oh no, now Brie has to be her assistant for 30 days or get fired. You know, like she was already fired earlier this year. They tried, I guess, but it was like watching a couple of backyard wrestlers imitate what they see on TV thanks to Brie still being awful. *1/2

Meanwhile, Booker T declares the previous match the “shucky ducky quack quack moment” of the show thus far, and indeed after only two matches I can’t think of a match presented on this show that better fits the description of shucky ducky quack quack. As Dusty Rhodes used to say, sometimes you just say “wubba”, ya know?

WWE tag titles: Goldust & Stardust v. The Usos

The Usos double-team Stardust and Jey throws chops on Goldust, but Jimmy gets caught in the Dust corner and they work on his knee. Goldust with a chinlock and Jimmy fights out of that, but Goldust gets a powerslam for two. Stardust chokes him out for two while JBL reverts back to stories about 1982 World Class again. You what would be legitimately awesome? If Michael Cole then said “By the way, if you want to see what JBL is rambling about, World Class is available on demand RIGHT HERE ON THE NETWORK!” They could even do like YouTube and have a little annotation box where you can just click on the Missing Link and watch his match from WCCW. But no one ever thinks to do that. Jimmy finally dumps Goldust and makes the hot tag to Jey, who follows with a dive onto Goldust. And one for Stardust as well. Back in, cross body gets two. Corner splash gets two. Goldust comes back with a spinebuster for two as Jimmy has seemingly disappeared. Jey with a superkick for two and they head up as Jimmy finally emerges from the hyperspace where Optimus Prime’s trailer goes, and we get a stereo superplex. Flying splash on Goldust gets two and it’s now breaking loose in Tulsa, but Stardust clips an Uso behind the ref’s back and Goldust finishes with the Curtain Call at 10:18. Never really got into a groove and the whole weird sequence with Goldust and Jey near the end kind of killed the momentum. **1/2

Meanwhile, breast cancer is, like, bad, you know? I feel so much more aware now.

Hell In A Cell Match For A Future WWE World Heavyweight Title Opportunity: John Cena v. Randy Orton

This is MUST WIN for Cena, guys! He might never get another shot at becoming a sixteen-time champion without it! Those first fifteen were NOTHING. This time it’s really, really, really, really, REALLY personal. Also, I got the “Locked On” achievement after sitting through the promo video for this. I have to say, if I get achievements for watching the Network on the XBone, I might just switch to that for a while and see what I can unlock. They brawl for a bit to start and Orton gets two, but he goes for a chair and Cena suplexes him. Orton gets it now and uses it for two. Cena tries the FU but Orton reverses into a neckbreaker for two. Orton presses Cena’s face into the fence for a bit and Cole is like “He’s TORTURING him!” And they wonder why people hate the announcing. In the ring, now it’s apparently the defining moment of their career, unlike the other 30 or so times they’ve met on PPV. This year. Orton stops to pose and Cena takes him down for two. Well now Orton’s special attack will take forever to build up again! My wife’s perspective on all this: “I know you say Orton is a douchebag who shits in people’s bags, but he’s pretty damn hot. Also, if John Cena threw me his t-shirt, I’d squee.” So there you have it. Orton with the chinlock to really emphasize the hatred and torture in the cell, but Cena comes back with backdrop suplex before walking into a powerslam for two. So as Lawler notes, Orton apparently COULD see him. Shit, he stole my joke. Cena backdrops out of the draping DDT, but Orton runs him into the post to take over again. They run each other into the cage a few times and Cena brings a table in, but Orton thwarts that plan and puts the table in the corner instead. NO ONE PUTS TABLE IN A CORNER! RKO Outta Nowhere gets two. Orton kind of gently runs Cena through the table and gets two. I don’t know if it’s just me, but the amount of replays tonight is really annoying, as anything with the least bit of impact is immediately double-featured. So Orton grabs the stairs, but Cena suplexes him onto the stairs and does a ridiculous five knuckle shuffle on the stairs, which is apparently more devastating than the usual version because…reasons. Orton goes low for two, however. And then they SLOWLY set up for the next spot, but Orton misses the punt and Cena gets the STF, but Orton bails to the floor. Cena is so ENRAGED by this that he tosses the stairs at him, which seems a tad extreme, but then he missed by six feet anyway. Back in, FU gets two. RKO gets two. FU gets two. Cena gets another table and goes up, but Orton follows with an RKO attempt that is blocked, and Cena finishes with an FU through the table at 26:00. Say it with me:

CENA

WINS,

LOL.

This was literally every other Cena v. Orton match you’ve ever seen in your lifetime with nothing to distinguish it. Except 8 million replays. Thanks, Kevin Dunn! *** So yeah, it’s Cena v. Lesnar at the Rumble. Again. Just accept it. Also, a note to the announcers: If it’s the middle of the show, you’re not really “stealing the show.”

US title: Sheamus v. The Miz

Sheamus quickly beats on Miz while Mizdow sells it on the floor, and it’s actually so funny that it’s completely distracting. Like, it’s a really funny opening match gag, but for a serious US title program it’s a total mess because you want to like the guy but he’s supposed to be an obnoxious heel. Miz gets a cheapshot on the floor to take over and JBL goes back to the Sportatorium well for material. Miz with a chinlock but Sheamus makes the comeback and the crowd is just deathly silent for all of this, with Mizdow as the only one getting any reaction. Sheamus goes up with the shoulderblock for two. Backbreaker gets two. Miz comes back with a neckbreaker for two and the short DDT for two, but Sheamus escapes the figure-four. Mizdow distracts him and the Skull Crushing Finale gets two. Miz goes up, however, and lands on the Brogue Kick to finish at 8:17. This was a trainwreck, with Mizdow getting the only reaction out of the crowd. *1/4 And then it turns into a comedy routine, with Sheamus using Miz’s unconscious body to force Mizdow into dancing. They need to just have Rusev squash the shit out of Sheamus and get that US title tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the comedy continues unabated, as Nikki is already torturing Brie. JBL notes that she shouldn’t have lost.

Big Show v. Rusev

Rusev goes for the knee and works on that for a bit, including an impressive suplex, but Show pulls on Rusev’s leg to escape. Rusev ducks the knockout punch, but Show comes back with shoulderblocks before Mark Henry wanders out to no doubt support his friend and America in general. I have literally no doubt in Henry’s patriotism or friendship. Show gets the chokeslam for two and Rusev bails, but Show throws him back in and superkicks Henry off the apron. And RUSEV CRUSH at 7:50. This was fine. **

Divas title: AJ Lee v. Paige

AJ kicks her down and Paige bails, so AJ goes after Alicia Fox who is now with Paige for some reason. Paige swings AJ into the railing to take over and the crowd is just dead silent. AJ with a tornado DDT as I’m really kind of bored and over this show and ready for it to be done with. To the floor and they try…something…on the railing, but Paige falls and hits her head. Back in, AJ quickly finishes with the Black Widow at 6:50. Can we finally end this feud now? *

Hell in a Cell: Seth Rollins v. Dean Ambrose

Ambrose, who would naturally do whatever Terry Funk suggests, starts on top of the Cell and entices Rollins to follow him up there. So instead, Seth sends Noble & Mercury up there and you just know that’s not going to end well. So yeah, Dean beats on them with the kendo stick and Rollins sneaks in for the ambush. The Stooges are unable to throw Ambrose off the Cell and Rollins runs away, but Dean follows him down and both guys go through the tables. EMTs try to haul them off on stretchers, but Ambrose is too crazy for that and tosses Rollins into the cage to finally start the match for real. You know it’s on because the Twitter hashtag finally appears! Luckily, Dean has a bag of torture implements and a ring full of chairs, and he uses those chairs for the purpose that the lord intended. Both for sitting and beating on people. He tries to lobotomize Seth with a screwdriver, but luckily he escapes and they fight to the floor, where Rollins goes into the cage again. Back in, Rollins comes back with a suplex onto a pile of chairs and tries a suplex onto a table outside, but that backfires and Ambrose drops an elbow on him and through the table. Kane pops in with a fire extinguisher to throw off Ambrose, however, and Rollins powerbombs him on the floor to take over again. Curb Stomp gets two, but Ambrose makes the crazy idiot comeback with a lariat and BRIEFCASE TO THE HEAD for two. And now it’s time for the cinderblocks, but just before Ambrose can finish the feud, the lights go out and someone’s speaking in tongues. Just like in the Mankind-UT match! Oh wait, no, because it’s stupid. So Bray Wyatt’s lantern magically teleports into the ring and casts a hologram, and Michael Cole notes “It’s Bray Wyatt!” Really? DO YOU THINK? Bray also manages to magically teleport into the ring, lays out Ambrose, and Rollins gets the cheap win at 13:56. Funny how they spend weeks burying WCW on their Monday Night Wars show for doing stupid shit like this and then they go and do the EXACT SAME STUPID SHIT. Like really, Ambrose survives falling off a cell and taking chairs to the head and stuff, and then gets pinned because midcarder Bray Wyatt gives him a magic slam? Fuck that noise. There goes the thumbs up for this show, as the ending out of left field totally ruined all the good will that the entertaining brawl had built up. Since WWE is all about comparing themselves to other, better, pop culture, this was like if you were watching a dramatic cop movie like Heat and just as the movie is building to the climactic fight between Deniro and Pacino, suddenly the smoke monster from Lost appears and magically knocks out Pacino so that Deniro can shoot him in the head and get away. ***

The Pulse

Nothing was really bad on the show, except for the finish of the show itself, but that was all-time terrible stuff. Thumbs in the middle.

  1. My ratings are right about in line with yours here. I'd probably drop Orton/Cena a star and add a little to Dean/Rollins because I appreciated their effort to set their match apart from the HIAC fare we've seen lately. Bums me out that we couldn't see these two go at it in 2000 in HIAC because they really could have done something special.

Still don't get Ziggler/Cesaro only going 12 minutes. I liked the 2-0 but 12 was still way short but they still had a good match.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I would've dropped Cena-Orton a star as well because I was so bored by the match, but I was aware that technically they were working an OK match and I couldn't really justify it. I mean I COULD, but there was much worse stuff to bitch about anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The guy who writes for Bleacher Report I think (Snowden) is trolling prowrestlingonly and yelling at everyone claiming it was a good show.

Why couldn't Ambrose kill Rollins dead and as he's celebrating...Wyatt attacks?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Love the Optimus Prime reference.

Confused about something from your recap. ..did Show superkick Henry or did Rusev?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Basically how I've felt about every match they've had since the Iron Man Match. Technically proficient but it just seems like the two guys are about as enthused to work together as the fans are to see it. There's nothing to it besides "well that was a correctly executed Suplex, Orton correctly executed that DDT, the finish went off without a botch"

    ReplyDelete
  6. I really don't understand it either. Ambrose wins, Wyatt attacks, next big feud, no problem.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Actually now I do know why...speculation is that betting odds were swinging too dramatically for Ambrose, so they messed with the finish to spite Reddit Guy.

  9. I marked out for the ending personally (or more accurately, what it could have been) and I actually marked out harder when Orton's music hit and I realized where the match was on the card. More could have been done with the ending but its at least moving things in worthwhile direction. Although I think a Wyatt Family beat-down would have been a better visual. Then they could have had Ambrose out crazy the Wyats in order to split them apart and take them down.

The way the show was handled, from beginning to end, left me mildly frustrated.

  11. Glad you get it now, chef.

    ReplyDelete
  12. If this company never tries comedy again I'll be a happy camper.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ooh, Ambrose and Wyatt feud. It's been a few months since we've seen that!

    ReplyDelete
  14. They're so worried about someone getting over stronger than someone else that we get this ridiculous cop out finishes that help no one get over. The fans want to get behind Ambrose, so give him the win let the fans support be rewarded.

The Ambrose/Wyatt match will inevitably have a similar finish because they'll want to keep Bray looking strong. It's just a continuous circle of washy washy booking that helps no one and kills any heat because the fans will realise there's no point getting behind anyone anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It kind of leads one to believe that this will be a 3 - way feud, with the way they are trying to portray each of these guys you end up with the way over babyface, the backstabbing and hated heel, and now the morally questionable spiritual leader with a cult following. He got some great heel heat for interrupting the Ambrose victory but he will still have his face characteristics and following.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lost in this is that Rollins has less direction now after a "win" than he would've by losing. At least after a loss he could go apeshit, call the loss a fluke, kick some ass, then circle back to Ambrose for revenge.

    But holograms are cool, too.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think the real problem I'm noticing with these shows since they have become "network specials", they are only what they have to be, no more - no less. Everything here was just so by the numbers, even the biggest spot of the night was so contrived and predictable by all accounts.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm pretty sure Marty Jannety was the holographic man floating in the lantern smoke.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I was just doing some quick math and unless I missed something there was only about an hour and a half of actual wrestling on this three-hour show. Maybe that's common these days but a lot of the matches felt really short tonight, even as Orton/Cena dragged on for what felt like ages. I really haven't minded (overall) the direction of the Fed lately, but damn it's a PPV let the other competitors get some shine.

Also, I really didn't mind the ending so much because they kept talking about the first Cell and the appearance of Kane so I knew something like that was going to happen. Not that doing that finish makes much sense when there is nothing on the line but, well, details details

    ReplyDelete
  20. Another thing, with Cena and the AA. He uses that move or attempts that move at least 8-12 times a match, its no longer a finisher and other than the STF, he hasnt added a signature move in 12 years. A match like tonight seemed to be calling for the debut of a new move as Cena realized he current arsenal was too weak, even Maggle Cole seemed to hint at Cena trying a top rope leg drop through a table to finish off Orton. That turned out to be just a tease, and the fucking payoff was a lame firemans carry off the 2nd rope.

Reading this makes me feel glad I spent the day at IKEA with my best friend, who bought a chair before realizing that we couldn't fit it in her car, and since the store was going to close in 30 minutes, she ended up having to return it and come back for it another day when she would borrow a bigger car. And that still was a thousand times better than the results I just read.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'd be all for an Ambrose/Wyatt feud. All for it. But Scott drove the final coffin nail in...that finish was EXACTLY like the stupid ass shit WCW did before they went under. There's no reason to ever get invested in anything anymore because Vince's senile old fuck clown shoe brain will step in at some point and inject the godawful bullshit his dumb ass likes and ruins it.

  27. So the Main event They gave us was basically a rip off of Taker/Mankind and the ending of Taker/Michaels....but then again the target audience wasnt alive to see those matches so they were like "OMG". Have we reached the point now where everything has been done?? Why not have a spot where Rollins curb stomps Ambrose through a table using the cell wall as an assist? Why not have Ambrose hit his (mick foley) double arm ddt on top of the cell?? Why not have Wyatt attack when the match is over? Why am i not booking this??

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why, it's that kind of trying to swerve and shock the audience that made them change the finish from Christian turning on Jeff Hardy to Matt, which gave us...a bunch of lackluster Hardy matches around Wrestlemania XXV nobody wanted to see or cared about. Sounds about right.

    ReplyDelete
  29. And that was the first time I've posted here i think.....YAAAAY no more Lurking....anyways....it was a Meh show.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Maybe Bray's gimmick should just be to have interference in matches designed to prevent interference: he debuted in an Inferno Match (Family). The cage/cell match with Cena (Family, Cam Netwon kid). This.

But at least Bray is coming off of a strong decisive win against his last opponent, right (yeah, Jericho, but still)? Instead of having the "set Harper/Rowan free" videos, why not have Bray be cutting strange promos hinting that he has chosen his next target but is waiting for the right time to mark him as his own? Have the Wyatt sounder go off a few times during matches/segments over the last few weeks to tease Bray coming down.

Repeated cheap finishes and a feud with Wyatt in the fall certainly worked for D-Bry.

Why would Ambrose choose a screwdriver over tongs or mustard?

    ReplyDelete
  31. "So yeah, the lesson here is “don’t do an interview where you bitch about the main eventers having 500 straight matches” because this is what happens."

Crazy it's been that long since those HIACs. I remember when they announced the new Killer Instinct during the XBOX One pressers, and I was like, "Why isn't Killer Instinct 3?" and my friend had to remind me the last one came out in 1996.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hadn't heard about this until Scott mentioned it. Where is this interview?

  35. Have we gone this long without anyone making a Rob Van Dam joke? Because it's right there!

    ReplyDelete
  36. It amazes me in2014 that we still have to put up with this shit. NOBODY comes out looking good. Cesaro lost two falls in a row, Ziggler is part of a match that didn't deliver what the fans were expecting and the fans themselves were robbed of what had potential to be a great match. They could still have Cesaro lose two falls but they could have done it without slapping the fans in the face.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Its exactly what they did with Tomb Raider (to continue your Gaming Theme). Lara Croft now has more origin stories than Spiderman

    ReplyDelete
  38. "Funny how they spend weeks burying WCW on their Monday Night Wars show for doing stupid shit like this and then they go and do the EXACT SAME STUPID SHIT."

    This x1000.

    ReplyDelete
  39. You have a blood feud that the fans have been wanting to see the blow off for for months and it ends with a hologram in the ring.

Kinda sums up what's wrong with this company at the minute.

    ReplyDelete
  40. "Also, a note to the announcers: If it’s the middle of the show, you’re not really “stealing the show.”"

Do these clowns even know what that term means? "Stealing the show" implies that guys on the undercard that nobody really knows have a great match and end up being what everyone remembers about that show, instead of the main events that were expected to deliver. Hence, these undercard guys "stole" the show from these established acts. John Cena and Randy Orton cannot STEAL a show, because they've literally been at the top of the card for about ten years. So what the hell are they even talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  41. My feelings exactly on this being WCW booking. Wrestling-wise I though everything was perfectly acceptable, ranging from average (**-ish) to good (***+). But the booking overall was a mess.

My big takeaway from the night is WWE is rapidly losing the ability to simply tell a satisfying story. As others have noted it would have been effortless to have had Ambrose actually win the match, then get attacked by Wyatt. Do they really think having Rollins win "keeps him strong"? If he's going on to feud with Orton is the kickoff going to be that Rollins won his Cell match while Orton lost? The fans know that's bullshit because Rollins only won due to Wyatt's interference. So why fuck over the fans just to sell an insignificant detail? Was it to get heat on Wyatt, for causing Ambrose to lose? It was a completely random attack--costing Ambrose the win barely earns more heat than had it been an equally as random post-match attack. And should I just ignore the fact that they used the same finish for two PPVs in a row: Heel runs in to cost the Babyface the match.

Maybe WWE thinks none of this matters because Cena/Orton was the *real* main event and that had a happy ending with Cena winning. God, what if WWE thinks by fucking Ambrose over so spectacularly they can recreate the fan support that built for Daniel Bryan?!

The last great happy mark ending this company had was at WrestleMania, six months ago. I suppose they feel Cena winning the belt at Money in the Bank counts, but it really didn't change anything, what with the Authority still being the top heels bedeviling the good guys every week. Even Cena's win here really means nothing because there is no reason the Authority couldn't just grant Orton a title shot down the road as well. There are no stakes, nothing to get emotionally invested in, except for seeing Ambrose get his revenge on Rollins, and for the THIRD TIME the fans have been denied that.

Maybe I'm wrong, and the slowly dipping TV ratings mean nothing, and the quarterly report this Friday will show a massive surge in Network subscribers. We shall see, but with each passing week I see a company getting closer and closer to the mindset that helped kill off WCW.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Commentary was god awful. When Rollins and Ambrose fell off the cage, Cole screams "THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE!"

A better announcer would probably say it once, followed by a few minutes of silence so we can digest what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Was about to say that....

    ReplyDelete
  44. I didn't think any finish would surpass Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena's Extreme Rules finish in horribleness this year. Alas, I was wrong. Tonight's finish was one of the most cheesiest finishes I have ever seen. Off the top of my head, Vampiro in WCW is the only thing that comes to mind.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Isn't the Rollins/Ambrose finish pretty much the same as Bad Blood 97?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Not really. The Bad Blood 97 finished was foreshadowed for weeks with Paul Bearer teasing Kane for a long time prior.

This was just "Here's Bray Wyatt for some reason!" with a silly Scooby Doo bullshit ending attached.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I figured someone was going to make this connection. I think they were different for a few reasons:

    1. Kane had been hyped as coming for Undertaker by Paul Bearer for months. So Kane interfereing in the match furthered a months long feud.

    2. Undertaker and Shawn were both long established main event stars and multi-time WWF Champions. Ambrose and Rollins are two relatively fresh solo stars main eventing one of their first PPV's in a long built feud between the two that had already seen match cancellations and fuck finishes.

  51. I think the finish to Brock/Cena at NOC was worse than tonight.

  52. An announcer who didn't have Vince telling him what to say, you mean. Screaming about it over and over was just like what Vince did on commentary.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Repetition is a tactic in announcing that can work but Cole's voice just doesn't lend itself to the repetition tactic.

JR had a style and voice built for repetition because he just gave off an aura of genuine excitement and investment in what was happening in the match.

  58. Yeah, but only superficially. The whole match was pretty much cribbed from the first two Cell matches. Hell, this match had actual interference from Kane as well. I'm actually surprised they didn't have Kane rip off the door, and as we fans are going "oh yeah, Kane did that in the very first Cell match," Michael Cole would be saying "we've never seen anything like this!"

    ReplyDelete
  59. WWE has become TNA circa 2007/08-ish: a company with a great roster that is being overwhelmed and overshadowed due to the mess that is the creative staff.

    ReplyDelete
  60. You know it's gotten bad when Michael Cole has regressed to the point where Kris Kloss is now a better announcer.

    ReplyDelete
  61. And much like TNA circa 2007/08, the creative mess and subsequent slump could have easily been avoided by doing a couple of things right.

    ReplyDelete
  62. WWE 2002-2003 is my go to comp.

    ReplyDelete
  63. It would have been better if the announcers kept selling that they couldn't see Bray in the ring like Warrior in the mirror.

"What's Ambrose looking at?!!? Why did he just fall over?!?"

    ReplyDelete
  64. Raw, I'd agree. SmackDown was actually somewhat competently booked then.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Also, Taker/Shawn was a match where it didn't make sense for either guy to lose clean. Shawn was drawing nuclear DX heat and needed to be kept threatening for Bret (and later Austin), Taker was being set up for the Kane feud and had to look invincible…

But Rollins' current character is supposed to be a chickenshit who can't fight his own battles (whereas DX Shawn was a badass who was such a dick he CHOSE not to fight his own battles; big difference), and a loss to Ambrose really only helps him as he's still this entitled prick with the briefcase and Authority backing despite taking a decisive ass-kicking from Ambrose… which is easy fuel for his next feud against literally any baby face.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Did… did you just call Tupac a Sith? I don't even necessarily disagree it's just… you know, Hit 'Em Up, and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  67. They have to save their ignorance of what goes on in the ring for Diva matches.

    ReplyDelete
  68. That sounds like an action packed day compared to this show. Smart move.

    ReplyDelete
  69. HHHH was awful then, but the rest of Evolution was great, and HBK/Benoit/Jericho/Edge were all doing the lord's work week in, week out. Also, Eddie and Angle were probably doing something awesome, if I can't remember specifically what.

    ReplyDelete
  70. A show like this makes me wonder how the writing aspect in the WWE work? Do they all sit around and discuss what they going to make the talent do? or do they sit with the performers and they have input or do they assign writers to the talent for a feud or do the just toss a whole lot of Envelopes at Vince and say to him "you choose...no not that one....no not that one....ok that one."

    ReplyDelete
  71. Holograms and Shockmaster's grandson...Bray really has some tricks up his sleeve

    ReplyDelete
  72. I believe that envelope theory was actually a plot point on an episode of The Larry Sanders Show and that's probably close to what really happens in the writing room.

    ReplyDelete
  73. ...wait, whats the difference?

    ReplyDelete
  74. As somebody who doesn't think the product is even that bad today, I tend to agree with some of these sentiments

    ReplyDelete
  75. In terms of being the wrong finish for the match. Brock/Cena was bigger and came when the renewal period was up right?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yeah, the constant vignettes for Wyatt was totally not foreshadowing him showing up soon.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Was in the Simpsons movie

    ReplyDelete
  78. Uh huh. Tell me more about this aura. Is it visible and quantifiable? Or is it just stupid shit you can say about anything just to make a critique?

    ReplyDelete
  79. His point was that Kane specifically had a well established reason for attacking Undertaker that had been mentioned several times. "Kane is coming and he's gonna beat you up Undertaker". Wyatt may have a great reason for attacking Ambrose and it may lead to a wonderful feud but Kane debuting and attacking Undertaker to cost him the match worked because everyone knew Kane had beef with Taker so the minute he walked down the aisle it made sense and also Shawn winning dirty helped set up his match with Bret and Taker's match with Kane down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I can just envision how the finish became an idea. Some idiot in a creative meeting pitched the entire idea aloud. Everyone in the entire meeting tried holding back their laughter Then all of a sudden Vince McMahon shouted, "THAT'S IT. I LOVE IT, EXCEPT WHY DON'T WE ALSO HAVE A HOLOGRAM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING TO BOOT."

    ReplyDelete
  81. Critique? I didn't say "goddamn Cole sucks" I just said his voice doesn't really lend itself to bombastically repeating phrases.

Aura of genuine excitement and investment in the match? Did you really not get that sense ever listening to JR on commentary? He constantly sounded like he'd gambled his house on Rock/Austin/baby face during the match. He would scream at the top of his lungs and it just sounded like the guy was really invested in it.

Cole's voice and style seems to lend itself to the more methodical and even keeled emotionally style because whenever his voice gets higher pitched and excited it sounds like a whine.

    ReplyDelete
  82. One is supposed to be a (lazy and dastardly) threat (mostly because Shawn refused to ever do anything that made him look weak), the other is supposed to be a puppet.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Outside of the Smackdown Six, it was nothing to write home about.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Why does Ambrose-Rollins need a satisfactory blow off ending now?
If the writing on the wall is correct and these two are going to be main-event-level for years to come, they are going to cross paths several more times and there will be bigger, better opportunities for that epic finale. The Ambrose-Rollins narrative has long-term legs and doesn't need a neat and tidy finish 4-5 months into their initial feud.
Look at Cena-Orton. Their rivalry doesn't just feel old because they've had a bunch of matches. It feels old because Cena and Orton have had so many definitive "blow off" matches that when they reconnect it's like, "Again? I thought they settled this?" Why send Ambrose-Rollins down the same path if we know it'll just lead to the crowd turning on what should be high-quality stuff simply because "it's just like every other Ambrose-Rollins match you've ever seen"?
I love the TV show "Justified." Going into the 5th season now, Raylen Givens and Boyd Crowder still haven't settled their feud. They've had several run-ins -- they'll focus on each other for awhile, split off into separate feuds, then come back to each other eventually -- but nobody has scored that definitive victory. And you know what? It's been awesome. Nobody I know who watches the show is complaining that there hasn't been a Raylen-Boyd blow off finale.
Do I expect WWE to be on the level of Elmore Leonard? No. But I'm Ok with some long-lasting feuds that aren't always settled so cleanly.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Another thing I just thought about: it's really frustrating that the company likes to pick and choose what and when we remember.

For example, we're all supposed to remember Foley as the hardcore legend as well as the first two HiaC matches as existing, but we're not supposed to remember that tonight's ME took its two biggest spots from those matches.

Then, we're supposed to believe that the audience WWE is targeting is the younger kids who root for Cena while JBL makes WCCW references on commentary that only longtime or hardcore fans will understand.

    I'm so lost.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Nah, I checked. No house-arrest anklet.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Between thd 6 of them, isn't that most of the show?

    ReplyDelete
  88. With a killer finisher in the Curb Stomp? Or won the Money in the Bank?

Wait...do we like or dislike Rollins this week?

    ReplyDelete
  89. They had a bigger roster than that actually. The seperate Smackdown and RAW house shows at around that time usually around 30 people per show.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Why have a distraction finish in a cell match...if they wanted to do a ambrose vs wyatt fued why not wait till the end of the match....the story shudve been ambrose winning, the cell raises, light out, wyatt comes out destroys ambrose, next fued started and have people talkin bout the match in the right way

    ReplyDelete
  91. It's not a like/dislike thing, it's just the booking. Rollins is a chickenshit heel who hides behind other people; Shawn was a boisterous heel who'd pick fights with everybody, cheat, then rise to the occasion when he didn't have his backup.

Look at his booking against Austin at Mania: does Shawn go down like a coward finally getting his comeuppance, or does he take everything Austin's got, kick the shit out of him, and then go down to the better man? Look at his booking against Taker in the Cell; gets his ass kicked at first, rallies, nearly kills Taker by fighting like a wounded animal, then finally succumbs to an unstoppable killing machine that (to that point) never lost clean.

Rollins? Steals MITB, ambushes Cena/Ambrose, hides behind Noble/Mercury/Trips/Kane, and comes off perpetually overmatched whenever Cena/Ambrose/whoever actually gets their hands on him.

    ReplyDelete
  92. If that was the case, they failed. Reddit guy not only predicted Rollins over Ambrose, but got every match correct.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hey, who was the guy that said they're not headed into 1999 WCW-territory?

WWE: Payoff at WrestleMania, blech everywhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  94. When the hologram happened, I thought, 'the booking team has been playing Mega Man X.'

    ReplyDelete
  95. What was the most disappointing HiaCmatch of all time?

I will go with Mankind vs Kane.

    ReplyDelete
  96. And there was no need for it. It's not like that match needed any added extras or any sort of screwy finish.

    ReplyDelete
  97. tbh, Smackdown six and the terrible MCMahon feuds cancel each out.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Doesn't count. Besides, it's not like anyone was expecting a Shawn/Taker-level epic between those two on a Raw episode.

    I gotta go with HBK/HHH.

    ReplyDelete
  99. It counts. And even if not all fans were expecting a hellacious bump, I'm sure that they were all expecting a finish.

    ReplyDelete
  100. When I saw the hologram I was expecting Darth Sidious to leave a message that Darth Reigns is coming then Spear!

    ReplyDelete
  101. I said it doesn't, so it fucking doesn't. You got that?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Are we sure Vince has even SEEN the original trilogy? At best, he saw a teaser when he finished American Graffiti...and subsequently came up with Deuce and Domino all those years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I guess. To me, watching some of the greatest workers ever going out in 15 - 20 minute matches trumps just about any McMahon feuds. Though I did really like the one with Zack Gowan.

    ReplyDelete
  104. claely underaker vs bossman is the worse hell in the cell ever

    ReplyDelete
  105. This one was up there, if not Top 5. No blood, no urgency, no....pulse, for lack of a better word. The "CENAWINSLULZ" ending was the runny turd on top of the shit sundae. This company is completely out of fucks to give.

    ReplyDelete
  106. That's not how i remember HIAC...I remember Shawn doing everything he could do to escape the cage and run away.

    ReplyDelete
  107. You've clearly given it more thought than the five seconds Hunter/Vince/Steph COMBINED threw at it in the booking meetings. After all, if it doesn't involve one of them, then it doesn't mean shit, right?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Is that like being Gary Dell' Abate's assistant, where you have to feed him carrots and brush his gigantic, horse-sized grin every day?

    ReplyDelete
  109. And they have a marvelous third show in NXT. The 6 competed in 20 minute matches every week which was the lions share of the show not to mention one of the greatest tag matches ever at No Mercy.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Clearly, the announce team has a senile old man feeding them lines, and if they want to keep their jobs, they better recite them, word for senile, nonsensical word.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I just wish there were stakes and developments on some level. Bray/Ambrose is apparently happening and now Brie is Nikki's assistant. For a month. But then what? Cena gets a title shot. Then what? Maybe he wins, so he's champ. Then what? Say what you want about how horrible the Invasion was, but there was something going on at least. Yes, they botched the single most anticipated storyline in wrestling, but I'd just about take another one of those over nothing, which is pretty much what we've got now. The entire promotion feels like its in a holding pattern, but not for anything in particular. Everything's just waiting around like Samuel Beckett took over booking. Build toward something! Please!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Makes me wish to God?Satan/Joe Pesci/Your deity of choice that WCW was still around to poach talent. Can you imagine if they were? And, of course the caveat that they don't have Russo....it'd be better for the talent, it would be better for us fans, and hey, it would be better for the McMahons, because they would have a REASON to give a fraction of a shit.

    ReplyDelete
  113. NXT continues it's streak of being the best wrestling show on TV. If I were the McMahon Centipede, I would be ashamed of my company, in that the guys that I'm paying big bucks to, cannot compete with the "training facility" in terms of wrestling content, or story-telling.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Cena/Orton was middle of the card.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Billy and Chuck melted my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Suck on my chocolate salty balls...oh wait wrong chef lol

    ReplyDelete
  117. I love how everyone says the Invasion sucked and they botched it, yet the weekly shows regularly kicked ass and what followed it for a year or two was far worse. Really, for as long as Cena's been the centrepiece of WWE, there has virtually been no air of excitement permeating throughout the shows.

    ReplyDelete
  118. You can do screwy finishes, but they had one at Night of Champions already and they did it again in a Hell in a Cell main event where it didn't even last fifteen minutes.

I think the point is, a dull show is a dull show is a dull show. They do the "someone's music distracts someone who gets rolled up" finish for every second match on Raw, so how the fuck is a screwjob surprising?

...But hey, once the Royal Rumble's up everyone will reset their level of disappointment in the company back to zero. Huzzah.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Does Snow v Mankind Kennel in a Cell count?

    ReplyDelete
  120. I dont blame the WWE for not trusting Roman Reigns's lackeys Ambrose and Rollins with a real main event match..Orton and Cena tore the house down with the MOTN that was pure wrestling. Ambrose and Rollins worked a horrible main event ANGLE, it wasnt event a real match. The good part is that guy who benefits most from what happened in the main event is Bray Wyatt and he wasnt even involved in the angle that built up the match....I cant wait for Roman Reigns to come back so Ambrose and Rollins can go back to working opening matches like those 2 other losers, Cesaro and Ziggler, who also failed to deliver the great performance all the smarks swore they would..

    ReplyDelete
  121. Thus my use of the word "necessary"

Screwy ends have a place in wrestling--but clearly the stars had aligned to demand an Ambrose win here.

He can get it and still feud with Rollins at Mania

    ReplyDelete
  122. Ex-fucking-actly. As bad as the Invasion was, and I will never say the Invasion was a good story, it at least drove the story and made things fresh. It may not have been "I Saw the Devil," but at least it was "Versus."

    ReplyDelete
  123. Nikki and Brie is going to be great. I also think Ambrose putting over Bray Wyatt is a great idea and hopefully Roman Reigns can come back so Rollins can put Reigns over..Fans should be happy that the WWE are building up 2 future WM maineventers, Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns.

    ReplyDelete
  124. And the funny thing is, that in a pure wrestling match, Rollins vs Ambrose should be much better than Cena vs Orton.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Keep dreaming.....Rollins and Ambrose could never have a PURE wrestling match...They always rely on hardcore and/or gymnastics spots....Cena and Orton can put on 5 star matches night in and night out with NO gimmicks needed..

    ReplyDelete
  126. Troll post....moderate. 6/10. Expected more effort, honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  127. It won't be long before the Bellas are fueding for the Divas Title because Nikki and Brie out worked and out performed Aj and Paige...Aj and Paiges match was very dull and the crowd didnt care about the match at all. But when Brie Bella got the Yes Lock on, the crowd EXPLODED!!! I know that for the next month the best tv segments on WWE tv are going to be the interactions between Nikki and Brie because both of them are great actresses and more importantly, they are emotionally invested in the storyline, just like the fans are...

    ReplyDelete
  128. Props to the guy that got his "Enjoy Cena vs Orton 121" sign so prominently featured.

    ReplyDelete
  129. You can't force people into your senility like Vince McMahon unless you've got his kind of money.

    ReplyDelete
  130. I watched the entire show and pretty much enjoyed all of it.

And I don't get the seemingly unanimous dread for another Cena/Brock match. They could fight 100 times, and I'd enjoy it every single time.

    ReplyDelete
  131. This I'll agree with. There's nothing I love more than seeing Brock pummel that stupid cunt.

    ReplyDelete
  132. WeAreWrestling.net is run by a gigantic faggot.

Just telling it like it is.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Hmmmm...it looked like Rollins fell off the cage...but Ambrose just jumped off for no reason...

"THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE! THEY BOTH FELL OFF THE CAGE!"

Ohhhh...I guess they BOTH fell off the cage. OK...

    ReplyDelete
  134. I'm worth a billion dollars and I only use this site to quell my boredom between fucking models. #RichSatan

    ReplyDelete
  135. Yep, and I seriously doubt that they're having Brock lose the title to Cena before Wrestlemania. So we will very likely get another clean win from Lesnar. What's there to hate again? I don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  136. So does this mean that Rollins and Orton start feuding? That may be okay.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Really? Who is the faggot?? And why is he a faggot?

    ReplyDelete
  138. Note about stealing the show: of you are the Main Event you're SUPPOSED to be the best match on the show.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Do you really trust WWE to properly go back to this feud somewhere down the line as opposed to just keeping it in their back pocket for when they need a video package to get people excited about an Elimination Chamber qualifying match on Raw?

    ReplyDelete
  140. Clearly sounds like I didn't miss much tonight. Good deal.

    *walks away*

    ReplyDelete
  141. That would be me. And it was a good show. So other than "They are not booking it precisely the way I would, therefore it sucks", I have no clue what you're talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Show gets the chokeslam for two and Rusev bails, but Show throws him

    This sentence is confusing.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I didn't get it either, but I don't care.

  146. Vince Jordan.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Ah, look, another anti-smark troll from the doldrums of 411.

    ReplyDelete
  148. It's pretty simple, Vince: show after show after show of "WHOA MUSIC PLAYS AND GUY GETS DISTRACTED ENDING!!" and "WHOA SPOOKY INTERRUPTION AND HEEL GAINS VICTORY!!" means that I'm not angry about the product or anything, but I don't care and I'm not intrigued and Cena wrestled Orton again.

Basically, they're not far off from that period booking-wise, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Glad I ended up missing this one

    ReplyDelete
  150. I bet Orton does that thing where he writhes and bangs on the mat... like a snake, mind you... and tries to set up his finisher, the RKO... which probably stands for "Randy Knock Out"...

    ...Gay.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I'm not even going to bother downloading this illegally.

Oh well, back to The Big Bang Theory reruns.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I actually liked Cena and Orton, just two pros who know how put on a show. What annoyed me more than anything was they let Cena and Orton just go, but they insisted on fluffing up Rollins and Ambrose. That ruined it for me.

Any chance they bump Brock's pay and get this Cena/Lesnar thing done by Survivor Series?

    ReplyDelete
  153. I might, just for something to laugh about.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Wait, who insisted of fluffing up Rollins and Ambrose?

...Are the initials P and P?

    ReplyDelete
  155. RKO! RKO! RKO!

THE APEX PREDATOR OF THE WWE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  156. The man known as the Apex Predator, with the tard-brow of a Cro-Magnon neanderthal...

    ReplyDelete
  157. The build up to their next match, perhaps? It would have been nice to have a fresh matchup for Lesnar. Their match will be good, but so would other matches with another half dozen viable contenders.

    ReplyDelete
  158. ANOTHER RKO! OUTTA NOWHERE!!!

Yes, out of nowhere. I totally didn't see him writhing on the grind and slamming the mat before he sets up the RKO to get all the fat girls in the crowd hot and bothered. I didn't see that at all. IT WAS OUTTA NOWHERE! This is what the WWE Universe loves!!!

    ReplyDelete
  159. I keep hearing complaints that HHH/Taker didn't use the Cell at WM 28, then in the live thread, again, tons of complaints that Cena and Orton didn't use the Cell... But when Rollins/Ambrose use it SEVERAL times, that's considered "fluffing it up" and it ruined the match?

To quote one Ron Simmons: DAMN...

    ReplyDelete
  160. I thought it was good, too. There was a distinct lack of chinlocks that helped the flow of this match. The RKO Vine trend has also added some strange sense of excitement to the finisher as well. I was hoping Orton would win, but I had the match in the 3.5-4.0 star range.

    ReplyDelete
  161. The true moment of the night was the unintentional comedy of the show going off the air with just a black screen followed by R-Truth dancing around to his entrance song on a WWE Network commercial.

    ReplyDelete
  162. It was a good show, but the power of negativity twisted it into an apparent bad show. I am speechless. Oh well. I enjoyed it, and that should be all I care about.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Beating Cena clean twice > beating some other scrub like Orton or Sheamus.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Well then I know you're not talking about Big Bang.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I actually enjoyed the big bumps off the cage and appreciated their effort to incorporate the cage. That however, is not what ruined their match.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Yes, it should be. And yet, you'll keep on posting and baiting people into arguments for the next six hours or so.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Extant1979 Most Must-See BoDerOctober 27, 2014 at 5:25 AM

With all the shenanigans going on with the Ambrose-Rollins match, Cena-Orton should have gone on last. Either way, I enjoyed the show, even though I was disappointed by the time Cesaro-Ziggler got. Even Miz-Sheamus got a chuckle out of me at the end of the match.

Don't know if I would bother to watch it again, but I got my money's worth.

On to the rewatching of the Survivor Series!

    ReplyDelete
  168. I felt like Dean Ambrose really, really tried to put together a good Cell match. He was handicapped by PG, and God awful booking, not to mention a horrible ending straight out of the Warrior - Papa Shango feud. If you add some blood and a clean finish you actually end up with a damn fine Cell match.

    ReplyDelete
  169. They are doing their very best to bury AMBROSE. Just like they did with Bryan. Let's hope he can overcome in the same manner.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Just thinking about how many Bella segments they can shoehorn into a 3 hour show is reason enough for me to not tune in for a second tonight. Things continue to get darker and darker with no light at the end of the tunnel.

    ReplyDelete
  171. I believe the hologram chanting was Aramaic for "Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope."

    ReplyDelete
  172. I wouldn't say he is being actively buried but he certainly isn't getting the rocket strapped to him.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Why would he steal your gimmick?

    ReplyDelete
  174. One last comment, win or loss, Ambrose looked like a FUCKING STAR yesterday. PPV main event, and he just has the "IT" factor 100x over. The guy could seriously be a WM main eventer in the near future.

I may have just imagined that. But it makes as much sense as anything else he could have been saying. I don't think it was gibberish.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Extant1979 Most Must-See BoDerOctober 27, 2014 at 5:49 AM

It can. It gives Rollins the win to continue his budding feud with Orton ("I won last night, you lost. I'm the future, you're not") and it allows the Ambrose-Rollins feud to continue at some point later.

Ambrose-Wyatt keeps Ambrose occupied while Rollins deals with Orton and gives what should be some fun brawls in the next couple of months.

And as cheesy as the hologram was, it was a pretty cool visual and the interference protects Ambrose in the loss.

  190. Why the hell not? I found it to be fine. Ambrose got a measure of revenge by beating the hell out of Rollins, and the finish starts a new feud. Very similar to Kane interfering in the HBK/Taker cell match, or Edge dressing up as a camera man and interfering in the Taker/Batista Cell match in 2007.

I don't get all the anger. This is a perfectly fine and common booking method.

  191. They honestly thought that Kurt Angle vs Mark Henry would be the best match at Royal Rumble 2006?

  193. He has the IT factor, sure, but stars win matches and feuds. There's a reason why Reigns gets to beat Orton cleanly on PPV and Ambrose gets what happened last night. Pro-Tip: It's not because they're going to headline the next few months of Raw and PPVs with Wyatt/Ambrose.

  194. Also, anyone remember the first Shawn/Flair match around early 1992? Where Shawn got knocked out, and Marty rolled his carcass back in the ring for an easy Flair pin?

    AJ = Flair
    Paige = Shawn
    Alicia Fox = Marty

The Royal Rumble is always the main event of the Royal Rumble.
