Just read an article with Mick Foley talking about his famous hell in the cell match with Undertaker. In it he talks about the legendary conversation with Terry Funk telling him to start on the top of the cage. Wouldn't the match have been better if they started in the cage, had a war inside the cage, somehow they get out of the cell, climb to the top then throw foley off the cage and/or do the chokeslam thru the cage and the match with that?
Yeah, but they already did that in the Shawn-UT original. Perhaps if we're building time machines and rebooking classic matches, we could lay off poor Mick and avoid him going through the table and suffering kidney damage in the first place?
The story was better told with them starting on top of the cage, simply because Mankind was nuts.
ReplyDeleteStop trying to ruin beautiful things!
Starting in the cell and building to the climatic finish on top would have been the logical way to book it, but part of the reason why it was so effective the way they did it is that absolutely no one was expecting it. There was no foreshadowing whatsoever and that made it all the more shocking.
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if the current WWE could find ways to surprise us like that again. The only times I can remember in the past five years or so where I was genuinely taken by surprise were Punk's pipebomb promo and the Nexus debut.
(Deletes E-mail about throwing Foley off the cage into a wood chipper)
ReplyDeleteDidn't Foley work the Raw the next night?
ReplyDeleteCrazy match. I have no idea how Foley survived all that and somehow managed to wrestle an entire match after that. I was so happy for him when he won that WWF title from The Rock. You talk about blood, sweat and tears I don't know if anyone ever did more to deserve that belt than Mick Foley.
ReplyDeleteOn the subject of HITC I was considering a Hell in the Cell marathon this weekened so I will put it out to the blog...which 4 Hell in the Cell Matches should I go with, (not counting Shawn/Undertaker, Undertaker/Foley or Triple H/Foley)
ReplyDeleteI always enjoyed the six pack one.
ReplyDeleteHHH-Batista is pretty good, too.
ReplyDeleteI think Foley climbing to start the match was a logical character choice for him to make.
ReplyDeleteOh, good call. I think I'll do the same
ReplyDeleteI...feel like he took the night off, but he was integral to the Kane/Austin match just abut 25 minutes after they drug his corpse out of the cell.
