Seeing as it's been over 20 years......

Had an idea this morning

I watched the 1994 Royal Rumble last night on the Network, where Bret Hart
and Lex Luger both went over the top at the same time and were co-winners.
They both got a shot at Wrestlemania X. One guy got a match with the
Champion first, while the other guy had to wrestle suitable competition
(Crush for Luger or Owen for Bret) before he got his title shot

Bret ended up facing Owen, while Luger got the shot at Yokozuna first

They could do that with Bryan and Reigns this year and have them both get a
shot at Wrestlemania, but bring back the "suitable competition" rule. It's
been over 20 years now, so I guess it's been long enough to re-hash it. It
might placate the Philly crowd somewhat and avoid their expected (Though
I'm thinking the worries of this may be overblown) freak out at Reigns
winning.

Have Reigns get the first shot at the champ and Bryan can face Brock Lesnar
as "suitable competition", with the idea that The Authority are
deliberately stacking the deck against him by giving him the toughest
opponent imaginable

Meanwhile, have Rollins win the title at Rumble and then have him retain at
Elimination Chamber over Cena, thanks to interference from Rusev to set
that program up

That leaves us with a Wrestlemania card of

Brock Lesnar Vs Daniel Bryan

WWE Title
(C) Seth Rollins Vs Roman Reigns

Daniel Bryan Vs Rollins/Reigns

Triple H Vs Sting for control of WWE

Rusev Vs John Cena

Undercard

Then you can either screw Reigns in the Rollins match somehow and have
Bryan win the Title, thus leading to a bitter Reigns turning heel and
siding with Paul Heymen down the line. Or, you could have Reigns get two
big wins over two of the companies best workers, thus giving him the
strongest possible start to his title run. You could then run rematches
with both Bryan and Rollins before building to the big showdown with Cena

Thoughts? Feel free to share with the Doomers

Ach, no.  They already ripped off Rumble 94 in  2005 because they couldn't make up their minds and it sucked then too.   If Daniel Bryan isn't winning it he shouldn't be in it.

Comments

  1. Isn't it common knowledge that 2005 was a legit botch?

    ReplyDelete
  2. It was. I re watched it, and I'm surprised they both managed to hit the ground at the same time. I remember watching live and I thought they'd both be declared winners because they were on opposite brands. I think they should have called the audible to do that because they both were in title matches at Wrestlemania anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Botch or not, it still ended up as the same type of finish as Rumble 94. And now there's more of a precedent to restart the match if there's a draw (not that WWE cares about any precedents they've set).

    ReplyDelete
  4. We already had the modern equivalent to WM X last year and it was perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I don't think the prospect of two Roman Reigns matches would make those who dislike him any more inclined to cheer him.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The 2005 Rumble was a botch, Scott.

I dont think Reigns is going to be helped by the booking becoming that non-committal

    ReplyDelete
  11. I never even considered that, I like it

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yep, that's whose path we want Reigns to follow.

    Lex Luger.

    Should be great.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I thought there is no Elimination Chamber this year. Pretty sure Reigns isnt taking the Fast Lane to WM...

    ReplyDelete
  14. What happened in the 2005 Rumble was actually a shoot

    ReplyDelete
  15. Details please.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Watching it right now. Last week's episode is on right after Impact ended.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The finish was planned, the double quad tear was not.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The finish was a work. McMahon blowing his top was acting.

Just because he pulled a Sting trying to get into the ring doesn't mean that everything else was unintended.

  23. Yup. And Shawn Michaels had no idea about Montreal!

    ReplyDelete
  24. ...and there's no reason for this version of this show to exist.

They've done no editing to the show that I can tell. They've merely added a Tenay intro to the top of the show...they had a couple of "pop-up videos" style info blurbs called "TNAFCTS" (but not nearly enough to make it enough of a change from the original run of the show)...and...that's it.

(Not that you have to care on a little watched cable channel...but they haven't cleaned up some of the questionable language (someone is "pissed off" and someone else is a "jackass") that might annoy the parents of young wrestling fans that a Saturday morning show might care about.)

Seriously, there's no significant difference between "Unlocked" and "Impact"...no reason for "Unlocked" to exist...at least as far as I can tell.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 20 years now? FUCK... I'm old.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The finish was not a work. It was a botch. Watch it again and watch the reaction of the referees if you want proof. They all panic and agree that Batista won, then clearly get a message though their earpiece and their body language changes, and only at that point do they start raising both the hand of Cena and the hand Batista.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Makes you feel sick doesn't it :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. Does anyone read the comments on WWE.com? While everyone here thinks Bryan or Reigns will win, everyone over there seems to think Randy Orton, or maybe Dean Ambrose. It's amazing how being a 'smart' fan changes your perception of things

On a side note, I'd love to be surprised by the winner. Although I have no desire to see Randy Orton in the main event of anything.

    ReplyDelete
  29. yeah friends feud big deal

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have always heard that 2005 was a botch

    ReplyDelete
  31. How often to TNA legitimately build a contender? Aries winning it the first time may have been one of the few occasions that they did.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So...were these taped before Josh Matthews was hired?

    ReplyDelete
  33. but in 2005 they continued the rumble andit wasn't the 94 finish...

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree. Watching the referees closely tells you it was a botch.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Bret Hart was robbed!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love that Cena and Batista screwed up that Rumble finish so perfectly that many people today still believe it was planned. Both guys and all the referees involved have thoroughly stated in various interviews that it was a botch and Batista was supposed to win cleanly. If it was planned, one of them would have just admitted it. That's why Vince stormed out angry and they just re-started the match with the planned finish instead of going with the co-winners.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Every time a Disney movie that came out when I was old enough to think the heroine was hot hits is 25th anniversary now is going to make me feel even older. Little Mermaid just hit that, and Beauty & The Beast will follow in another year. After that, Aladdin.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 2005 was 100% a botch (and an amazingly perfect one too). Maybe SK is thinking of 2000. It always seems to get glossed over in official histories, which name Rock sole winner, but Big Show has just as much of a claim to that mantle as Johnson. It then kicked off a feud between them which basically ruined Rock's title chase, and helped give us the incredibly stinky four corner main event we got eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jericho talks about this in one of his podcasts. VKM, the control freak to end all control freaks, had an anal haemmorhage over the finish being fluffed and stormed out from Gorilla instantaneously. He was so amped up he tore both fucking quads. Nothing was gonna stop him restarting that match. If it was planned, it wouldn't have needed a reset, as both men went into title feuds afterwards and exited WM as champions.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Suffering suckatash, you'll give WWE ideas!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Often the case with timelines. Not much happens towards the end of the year, and down periods just get glossed over. Especially the case with ECW, as they pretty much shut down in December.

    ReplyDelete
  42. As I mention further up, I think it was just VKM's control freakery. Any rational human being would've called an audible for the reason you mention.

    ReplyDelete
  43. What a mess. Not only do they botch such a huge finish, but then Vince blows out both his legs trying to fix it. Just crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Just rewatching the end of 2005 now, and Finkel announces that the match be "restarted". I'd have larfed if Vince was so pissed at the botch he literally just made Benoit and Eddy come back out and everyone had to do the entire thing again.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Like everyone admitted Montreal after the fact?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Cena apparently admitted it was botched in a Sports Illustrated podcast hyping up Mania a few years back. I cannot now find this podcast so you simply must take this on faith.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 7 matches. 27 minutes. Avg match length: 3:51. Didn't take them long to give up on the better wrestling/longer matches philosophy! I guess they're saving the good long matches for the PPVs. Oh wait.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I've never seen it so who won or was supposed to win?

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm pumped for the Rumble regardless of everything else going on. I have football fatigue from all the non-stop talking heads and internet posts about nonsense. I need an escape.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Just watched it on Youtube myself... Apparently Batista was supposed to win but both he and Cena went over the ropes. It doesn't look botched at all to me...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Batista, and... Batista. But Batista tries to dump Cena over the top backwards over his head and gets carried out with him, or tries to batista bomb him and literally just falls out while dropping Cena out too, can't quite tell.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The ref who raises Cena's hand in the ring for the first time clearly says on camera "Cena hit first" once they first fall out. I think they were definitely changing things on the fly.

    ReplyDelete
  53. They both went on to win a title at WM. That's why I couldn't see the big deal about who won. It turned out to not actually mean anything

    ReplyDelete
  54. Former ref Jimmy Korderas said it was botched. He was one of the referees out there when it happened.

    ReplyDelete
  55. There is a kinda "whoops, I fucked up" vibe about Batista as soon as he hits the floor, but I dunno, it looks like he's put the effort in to completely back flip over the ropes. It's a weird one

    ReplyDelete
  56. He wrote a book didn't he? Was it in there?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree. Football is over for me this season and the Rumble is exciting as a wrestling fan. Two realistic winners of the Rumble and I can buy any of the 3 leaving with the title.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm studying this clip like the Zapruder footage. I say botch!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I didn't read his book. I heard it in his podcast with Arda Ocal.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Alright, I just watched the finish.
-This show looks dated as hell
-Look at how young Cena looks. He looks like Beiber
-It certainly looks like Batista just kept going so he wouldn't kill himself or Cena

    ReplyDelete
  61. Well with the story they were telling with Batista and his split from Hunter I think him winning the Rumble was more essential to his story than Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Aye, a controversial Rumble finish didn't really play into any storylines going on

    ReplyDelete
  63. Now that I went back and watched it, I think the story is Batista is the main event. Guess the WWE was saying Batista is more important than Cena which seems completely weird for obvious reasons

    ReplyDelete
  64. Also Cena could also go out on SmackDown and demand a #1 contender's match and accomplish getting him in the match.

The Batista storyline was more subtle. He enters the Rumble and doesn't demand a title shot, he just bulrushes through it and then Evolution realizes they're in trouble because Batista's got a title shot and Trips is champ. So the angle of HHH and Flair manipulating him to get him to smackdown comes from that and Spurs on his decision to break from Evolution.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Look below I lay out why I think Batista needed the win more than Cena.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Agreed. Really interested to see if they really are all-in on Roman Reigns. Sometimes I think we make him seem more important to the WWE than he really is. As much talk as there has been about him being the guy with no if, ands, or buts, it really has not seemed that way on tv.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Cena meanwhile could get his title shot anyways through the standard tactic of the losing brand needing a challenger too so Cena finally beating Angle works.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think many of us are guilty of it. It comes with the territory when you analyze and then over analyze ad naseum. It's a side effect of talking wrestling here every day.

There are quite a different number of potential title matches that can come from the Rumble event. Brock/Bryan for the title or without the title and if they are serious about Reigns I can see him taking the title off Brock or Cena. It's pretty interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  69. It's definitely a botch but it's remarkable how well it happened to where people think it was a planned finish. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction and Chance supersedes planning.

    ReplyDelete
  70. It's good they botched this one rather than the Del Rio/Santino one.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Know what will make you feel better, pal? Pushing those damn millennials into a pool.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Not buying it, even if Cena did say something later (how many interviews did Shawn swear he had nothibg to do with the Montreal Screwjob?)

This was probably something known only to Cena, Batista, and Vince himself to work everybody. That kind of overacting is only done by someone who planned on doing it from the start.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Wouldn't Bryan not being in the Rumble just cause everyone to shit on #30 and the last few minutes of the rumble like they did last year?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Theory: If the Rumble goes before the title match then Bryan wins so the crowd isn't dead for the main. If the title match goes first, Reign wins with a quick finish to the show so there's no time for too much bad reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  75. This conspiracy is bigger than you, me, or the FBI, zanatude!

    ReplyDelete
  76. If only Hall could have mentioned that shoehorning Jeff Hardy in a dangerous gimmick match without any buildup was a recipe for Jeff getting injured and Hall would look like a prophet.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Rumble should always go on last because that's the match fans are most invested in.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Best idea I have heard in years actually. Outside of Hogan making one last comeback at 65 and winning it.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hogan winning the title would actually be a fresh idea because it's been 13 years since he last won it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. This is such a weird crusade. There's nothing to hide here, if anything they would do the opposite and claim it was their plan all along, not a botch. There's nothing in it for them to lie about this like their was with Montreal. It's not the same no matter how many times you say it

    ReplyDelete
  81. The finish was not planned

    ReplyDelete
  82. Well, everyone involved looks mortified in the clip, everyone involved has attested to it being a botch. Vince running out makes it for me. If it was deliberate, why restart?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Kind of the same for me. Football fatigue actually set in early for me since as a Jets fan, this season was such a chore to sit through that it kinda impacted everything else.

Granted, I haven't watched more than 5 minutes of Raw since September, so I'm a little out of the loop, but I'm sure I haven't missed too much.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Not to mention that they never showed replays of the double elimination spot because obviously they didn't hit the floor at the exact same time, most likely Batista hit first.

    ReplyDelete

  89. He is 5'9 and might even be shorter.

    ReplyDelete
  90. But the double quad tear was.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I'm with you, no way on Earth a spot like that was planned in advanced. Batista friggin' backflipped out of the ring and landed on his face.

Think about all of the times they've done spots like that to have matches end in a draw - it usually involves both guys standing on the apron and then carefully jumping down at the same time. Not backflipping onto their face.

    ReplyDelete
  92. The other two occasions this has happened in a Rumble have been very clean indeed, too. They look like the kind of thing that could (and certainly were) practiced to death beforehand, to get right. Even Michaels' defiance of gravity in 95 could've easily been subject to rigorous trialling beforehand. The 05 flub might deposit the pair almost perfectly at the same time but there's no way you could practice that. It's one of those spots that could only happen by chance.

    ReplyDelete
  93. But what would be the point of keeping it secret? In Montreal, you had potential criminal activity to cover up, reputations at stake, all sorts. I just don't see the value of covering up a finish like that at all.

    ReplyDelete

I'm afraid Reigns is winning, no matter how little sense it makes. And the next three months will be predictably shit while NXT continue to overshadow the main product.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hehe - make Puder take another beating :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Roman Ride-a-long Tour?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Are you trolling? Why would they keep that secret? What's the point?

    ReplyDelete
  99. The WM mag on new stands has Reigns front and center. Things could change but that should give a hint as to who they think is really important.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I love Wrestlemania X so much I could get behind this.

It would have to be something like this

    Lesnar retains after pinning Rollins.

Reigns & Bryan last two in the match, Reigns goes to spear Bryan, Bryan jumps it, turns around bullrushes him, both go spilling over the top rope.

Next night on RAW, they promise an update on the WWE Title situation. Reigns & Bryan come out. Triple H comes out and says since neither won, neither get the title shot. He's awarding the title shot to the most deserving individual on the roster: Seth Rollins

"No chance..." Bah gawd, King, it's Vince McMahon! Vince relieves Triple H and Stephanie of their duties, but not before booking Triple H in a match at Wrestlemania with his newest signing, THE VIGILANTE Sting!

Heyman comes out interrupts Vince, cuts a promo on how Lesnar has conquered everything in his path, no one in WWE can stop him. Vince agrees with Heyman and says since no one has been able to dethrone Brock Lesnar, perhaps we need to make this a little more challenging, at Wrestlemania the title will be defended twice. Reigns will get a title match and Bryan will get a title match. A coin flip will determine who goes first. Reigns wins the flip. In the interest of competitive fairness, Bryan has to wrestle a 2nd match and face an opponent he's never beaten one on one - Bray Wyatt

    So

Bray beats Bryan cleanly keeping his clean sheet against Bryan intact.
    Lesnar beats Reigns
Bryan beats Lesnar for the belt.

Bryan vs. Bray immediately becomes the top post Wrestlemania feud.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I'm a Reigns fan and think he can be a really big star, but that time hasn't come yet. I don't know what would be wrong with having him squash dudes for the next seven months then challenge for the title at SummerSlam.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Because of WWE's fear of anyone over 60 keeling over in the ring, it would never happen. Not to mention that Hogan seems content just making a paycheck, promoting his beach shop and being the William Shatner of wrestling. It's not like old egomania wouldn't want one last sunset ride, since his last match was jobbing against Sting -- but the guy barely can move -- and no Rock/Hogan miracle or a overselling Shawn Michaels could pull Grandpa Hogan through a match in 2015. He ain't Bruno or Lou. Old man can still cut self parody promos that are filled with gold, brother.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I missed Sting's debut - but at least 55 year old active wrestlers are still cool.

    ReplyDelete
  104. And trust me - I'd come out of my non-wrestling retirement to see John Cena vs. Hulk Hogan in a PG-13 bloody cage match at Wrestlemania brother.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Bringing Bryan back before the Rumble if he's not winning it was a mistake and it would be an even bigger one to pit Reigns against Bryan for the audience's approval if the endgame is to make Reigns the new "guy."

Playing the hand they've got, they need to keep Bryan and Reigns world's apart. Put Bryan in at #2-5, bounce him with some shenanigans and then bring Reigns in.

No one who's still homering for Bryan the way they were before WM30 is gonna be placated by Bryan almost sort of kinda winning.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Two questions:

Yeah sure, everyone knows the show is not live, but jeez, why would TNA spoil their next week's show before the current show is over? The match is just announced, but we already see in the preview that Jeff Hardy is going to slam Abyss into the tacks. Don't have to watch the match now.

And what happened to Angelina Love? I haven't watched TNA in 3-4 years and she went from looking nice to looking like she's on the Mob Wives' Plastic Surgery plan.

    ReplyDelete
  107. The baseball player

    ReplyDelete
  108. The hernia was a blessing and a curse. I'm not sure anyone could have dealt with a little boy named Roman Reigns suffering his succotash non-stop since Summerslam.

At the same time, a month is probably not enough time to legitimize a guy from powerhouse backgrounder in a 3 man stable to Royal Rumble winner.

That said, if we're going that way and they commit HHH-style where they just relentlessly push the shit out of him and brute force his legitimacy, it could work, even if it won't be pretty to watch.

I mean, honestly, was Batista any more ready in 2005? I'm pretty sure he turned out OK in the end AND he never learned how to cut a promo outside of his Hollywood Dave Batista character.

    ReplyDelete
  109. If Bryan gets bounced early, the rest of the Rumble will be shat upon. The way the crowds have been reacting to him on Raw, its not going to be pretty if Bryan doesn't win the thing.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I'm not sure they'll shit all over it, but if we assume the desired endgame is Reigns celebrating in a chorus of cheers, having Reigns in there after Bryan gets tossed gives them a far better shot at it than Bryan going to the very end and getting tossed as part of the final four (with Reigns present as well).

Toss him early, the crowd has a chance to recover and get over it. Toss him third to last and the crowd's gonna deflate with a sad balloon farting sound during Reigns' celebration.

    ReplyDelete
  111. But Hulk Hogan is not kneeling over, brother! Not when he's having 20,000 screaming Hulkamaniacs chanting his name.

    ReplyDelete
  112. I haven't seen anyone suggest removing him...?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Not sure why but I always thought Ludvig Borga was Luger's hypothetical opponent if the coin toss went the other way.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I think they'll need a *really* hot angle for it to work, and transfer the heat away from WWE creative onto whoever they want it to be on, but it probably can be done.

    ReplyDelete
  115. The Borga deal was weird because WWF were still promoting him for shows in early 94 despite not being seen since the end of 93.

    ReplyDelete
  116. He was meant to face Tatanka at the Rumble wasn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  117. He was. Crush was already slated to face Savage and they had an ongoing feud.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I'm pretty sure Luger was going to face Crush if Bret won the coin toss.

    ReplyDelete
  119. That would have made no sense as, again, Crush was already booked for the show for the blowoff to his feud with Savage.

    ReplyDelete
  120. From Raw, January 31st 94:
    "Somehow we segue into
Jack Tunney with The Decision That Saved WrestleMania. Tonight, there
will be a coin toss. The winner will take on the current WWF Champion,
and the loser will face suitable competition. Then there will be a second
title match, between the WWF Champion and the coin toss loser. "Suitable
competition" is defined as Crush (for Luger) and Owen Hart (for Bret
Hart). I mean, really. Crush? Where'd THAT come from? Couldn't we have
said Ludvig Borga? Oh, and there will be some special guest referees. I
guess this would be a good chance for Hogan to finally pass the baton.
    But that won't happen."

    ReplyDelete
  121. I know it didn't make sense but that's what the announcers said and I can't remember but I'm guessing the Savage/Crush match was made official after the coin toss deal.

    ReplyDelete
  122. That's from KJP's Raw report. No it didn't make sense, but it did happen.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Huh. I stand corrected!

    ReplyDelete
  124. But you are right, it didn't make sense. If WWF didn't want to advertise Borga's name, they should have used Bam Bam instead as a suitable competition as he was a fairly strong heel with no program at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  125. A thought: Rollins loses to cena/Brock; Rollins cashes in immediately and loses. Hhh comes up with plan d; reigns and Bryan are the last 2 guys in rumble. Reigns throws out Bryan and becomes the new authority guy. Goes to wm and wins the title.

  133. Only way they can salvage it is if Mountie can come out so fans will have someone new to get behind.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I'm not sure about that, but if Reigns is winning either way, you're going to mitigate the damage done by not getting anyone's hopes up.

If you make it clear early on that nobody's getting the happy ending they want, they may be more receptive to whatever they DO get. If you work the shaft, tease the head and play with the sack for the entire match and then suddenly punch them in the balls and flee the room in the final four, they're not going to be happy no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  135. If they did co-winners then I'd go with Reigns and Ambrose--that way you could do the Shield Triple Threat for the title at Mania. But Bryan winning by himself is still the best and most logical option.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Ditto. Except for the friends part.

The Mountie to be eliminated by Roman Reigns, Quebec to declare war on Samoa.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Yeah that's what I figured too but Dawkins is probably right about the Savage match being booked after the coin toss....which is dumb. The winner of the toss wanting the first title match is also dumb. Of course you'd want the second one

"But how will I jack off tomorrow night then?"

    - Vince

    ReplyDelete
  140. I did that last year. Social media blackout, but it was worth it in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  141. For the first time since I was a child, I've actually stumbled upon some real life wrestling fans this past year. AND we all support United. We're like the greatest guys in the whole world.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I could do without Rumble appearances from Jericho and RVD. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  143. IIRC 2005 was an accident. Vince was legit pissed when he came out...so pissed that his quads exploded!

    ReplyDelete
  144. It made sense kind of, since Yoko cheated Bret to win his first championship and then Luger failed to win the title from Yoko due to a technicality so in the context of kayfabe, it'd make sense that both Bret and Luger wanted to get their hands on Yoko first.

    I like both of em!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Plus you could win the title while you're all fresh, then run away and get counted out during the second one.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Wow I thought you were from Liverpool.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Booo! I did grow up in West Kirby for a bit, but my scouse accent is long gone.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I stayed up late with friends until 4am watching the Rumble live every year from 2001 to 2011... but everyone's got kids and stuff now so times change

    ReplyDelete
  150. Aye. I can't handle being up till 4, work or no work, these days, at the grand old age of 32. God knows how I ever did. Gonna have to for Mania though, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I still like them, but they're kind of played out as surprise returns at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I can still stay up for PPVs but WM puts me to sleep these days because it's soooo long.

    ReplyDelete
  153. It is tough. I probably would actually enjoy it more watching it taped. I did watch 30 on tape after 29 was such a brutal chore to get through. But I think this year i'll try live. Either way, the day after's getting booked off work.

    Specials you mean.....

    ReplyDelete
  155. Don't take time off work, just go in and do things half arsed.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Half arse the half of the arse I bring in anyway? They'd notice. It wouldn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I'm in the US, but I'll have to wait for Mon morning. Sadly, I agreed to plans on Sun night.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Jericho's in Philly all weekend. He's hosting a debate with Bischoff and Bruce Pritchard

    ReplyDelete
  159. Oooh, now there's a guy in Bischoff I'd pop for as a surprise entrant.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Going a day/night without the BoD is the worst part :'(

    ReplyDelete
  161. I haven't watched much either. Just following along here. Guess that's why I'm not as down on it as others

    ReplyDelete
  162. Theberzerker Von HUSSingtonJanuary 24, 2015 at 9:29 AM

Nah, they hit the ground at the exact same time. It's kinda crazy to watch actually, how they managed to bounce a little on the way down and hit the ground, horizontally, at the exact same time. No way it wasn't a work.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Theberzerker Von HUSSingtonJanuary 24, 2015 at 9:29 AM

I would be OK with this actually.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Which is the most likely explanation?

    1) It was a work
    2) Batista is a big clutz

    ReplyDelete
  165. It's actually be reported as being a botched ending, I think Batista commented on it? But I agree with you, I can't see them landing and the exact same time by accident.

    ReplyDelete
  166. So then why not let STING win the Rumble and then the title at Wrestlemania? And he can actually wrestle compared to hogan. I mean, if he is fit enough for a match with HHH, he can also be the champion.

    ReplyDelete
  167. The "It's a work" theory has been thoroughly debunked by Messrs Rani, Vanderlay, Liquid Disc, LSisco and others down below, Berzerker sir!

    ReplyDelete
  168. A part-timer returning to win the Rumble? What could possibly go wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  169. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogJanuary 24, 2015 at 9:43 AM

In kayfabe terms, why does the champion have to defend twice? Why wouldnt there just be a Bret vs Luger match to decide the #1 contender. C'mon, Fuji, you are better than that!

    ReplyDelete
  170. They didn't land at the same time otherwise they would have shown replays of it.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Today, they would fight at fast lane to decide who gets the shot

    ReplyDelete
  172. The two biggest things that indicate it was legit are:

1.) One of the Smackdown refs goes to raise Batista's hand at first, then presumably someone gets in his earpiece and he changes his mind to go with Cena.

2.) They didn't have Vince's entrance music cued up for when he came out.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Because the championship match would be the challengers second, so to be fair the champ has to have an earlier match as well.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Fuji has a Wrestlemania track record of blithering idiocy.

    ReplyDelete
  175. It absolutely was Crush. Whether it made sense or not.

    ReplyDelete
  176. AND they advertised Borga's name anyway--he was originally supposed to face Earthquake.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Back in the PG era, wrestlers dealt their issues with coin tosses!

    ReplyDelete
  178. Theberzerker Von HUSSingtonJanuary 24, 2015 at 9:56 AM

They sure did, watch it again, they hit the ground in a ball simultaneously...but yeah it seems I'm wrong and it wasn't planned. I guess Dave wanted to add a little drama to the end by going over a little bit along with Cena and then lost his balance and botched it.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogJanuary 24, 2015 at 9:57 AM

I mean before WM. Im talking kayfabe, not the real reason for the booking

    ReplyDelete
  180. Theberzerker Von HUSSingtonJanuary 24, 2015 at 9:58 AM

    HUSS!

    ReplyDelete
  181. I was in the crowd at the 2005 Rumble and everyone was pissed when it looked like they were going to have two winners. I say this is a bad idea.

    ReplyDelete
  182. I think there's a bit of a family feud brewing in the ol' Night clan. I texted my cousin about his pick to win the Rumble and he chose his favourite right now, which is Roman Reigns. I replied that mine is Daniel Bryan, which set him off. He says Bryan sucks and he hates the Yes chant.

I think I may have to punch him.

    ReplyDelete
  183. If everything is a d except for one match that is literally one point away from a d how is the show a c minus? Your ratings seem to be irrelevant and pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Because of a contract stipulation years earlier. In order to be able to team with the Powers of Pain and still receive a title shot, he had to agree that should he ever manage a World Champion at a future WrestleMania, the champion would have to defend the title twice. Since the prospect of ever managing a World Champion was a long shot, Fuji decided to the roll the dice.

Like when a team trades a top 10 pick five years from now.

    ReplyDelete
  185. I think showing a small preview of next week helps keep more viewers than it loses. If you just heard Hardy vs. Abyss - Monster's Ball, you'd probably just shrug your shoulders and watch it or not watch it, it wouldn't make a difference. But now you see tacks, crazy spots, etc. you want to see more of it and would tune in next week. That's how normal people think.

    ReplyDelete
  186. Do you know how hard that is to pull off?

    ReplyDelete
  187. He obviously doesn't like anything that isn't NXT.

    ReplyDelete
  188. That's interesting though, that some people are actively turned off by the Bryan stuff. Maybe we'll get some totally split crowds soon

    ReplyDelete
  189. Extant1979 - Mr. Cable AccessJanuary 24, 2015 at 10:07 AM

I don't care what Scott says about the Undertaker-Yokozuna Casket match, the 1994 Rumble is one of my favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  190. I don't think people hate Roman Reigns as much as dudes on the internet believe they do.

    ReplyDelete
  191. It legit scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. The message from the coffin and rising up was creepy as fuck.
