1996 Raw & Nitro observations

Long time reader, second time e-mailer. I've been watching early Raw & Nitros from March 1996 on the Network. One thing I've noticed during the Raw intro is a shot of President Piper slapping Goldust... yet this is in the opening credits weeks before he even showed up. Any guess as to why such an odd edit? It looks like (according to Youtube) that it replaced a shot of someone (Jarrett?) hitting Ahmed Johnson with something (a gold record?) from behind while he was talking to Lawler at ringside.

Also... this is (obviously) from Raw in March of 1996.

Isn't that Lex Luger's WCW theme playing? How'd they get away with that?!?

PS: Is it white and gold, or blue and black?

​IT'S FUCKING BLUE AND BLACK!  How can anyone possibly see it the other way?  FUCK!

Anyway, as to the question, they would do those kinds of weird edits a lot.  During the Bill Watts era, they would show a clip of next week's main event in the "next week" portion of the taped show in order to attempt to pop a rating for it.  ​I guess they figured that everyone knew it wasn't live anyway.

    The best song of 1996 was of course, Spaceman by Babylon Zoo. I don't believe it even appeared in the PTBN's Best Song of the 1990's thing.

    So, on the most recent Live Nerdist podcast, someone asked if they'd interview more wrestlers. Hardwick said they'd like to, but who would be interesting to interview.

    Iron Sheik was mentioned, to which the guys immediately turned down. They said they'd love to have the Rock on.

    Anyone else you guys think they should get on?

    TNA are doing that "next week" thing now, showing clips of next week's show at the end of Impact. I'm not a fan.

    That said, I'm finding Impact unwatchable anyway due to the camera work, so no great loss.

    But, yeah, 1996. X-Files is getting a bit shit.

    Really, by 96? Is that Season 3? I thought X Files was smashing it then. Think it probably should have ended in 98 maybe.

    Lex Luger's WCW theme (like Goldberg's) is a stock theme. Think "freelance music", where it's written, and wrestling companies can pick it up for themes, or the History network can pick it up for WWII dramas.

    On this note, Lex's 1996-1998 theme and Goldberg's WCW theme are fucking badass and suit the characters to a tee.

    I was just going to post this. Another common example of this is Marvelous Marc Mero and either Joe Gomez or The Renegade having the same production song for a theme. Also - Benoits first WCW theme was often used by Fox in commercials for their prime time shows.

    Season 4 started in 96 and I personally thought it was on the downward curve at this point (working from memory). I loved the show for the first 2-3 seasons but hate stuff that gets stale (like a big chunk of the current WWE roster)

    A lot of WCW music was stock music. Jericho said his first theme was used for sports highlights, I've heard Lugers in random commercials. I think even the Hollywood Blondes theme I heard somewhere else.

    Some gimp with a shitty cameraphone took a photo with terrible exposure and white balance and it seems to have hit some sort of bizarre sweet spot in people's perception where - to many - it looks white and gold, because they're insane...

    It was a mixed bag for me by season 5. I still liked the stand-alone episodes, but I felt the aliens/government conspiracy stuff was all getting a bit too confusing and not really all that interesting.

    Tangent - on NXT, what was the name of the guy who seemed like a bit of a "Next Kurt Angle" type?

    I only remember seeing him once (I think he lost, but looked very impressive) but I can't remember his name.

    If it's someone really obvious, I'll hold my hands up to being an idiot. :)
